Self contained, luxurious eco retreat in the beautiful East Devon countryside - just 6 miles from the sea! As seen on Grand Designs and Grand Designs Revisited 2018, our property is a zero carbon luxurious eco home, built from traditional cob, with a wildflower meadow roof and set in 3.5 acres of meadow and woodland. Ottery St Mary is a charming, bustling, little town, set on the River Otter, providing all the basic needs, independent shops and plenty of lovely eateries, and a few pubs!
As seen on Grand Designs and Grand Designs Revisited 2018, our property is a modern zero carbon eco luxurious home, built from traditional cob, with an amazing wildflower meadow roof and set in 3.5 acres of meadow and woodland. This is a luxury, zero carbon house - we produce all of our own electricity and all of our water is either filtered rainwater or from our borehole. Tea, coffee, sugar, milk and scones or biscuits are provided as a welcome pack for your arrival. Dingle Dell annexe is linked to our home by a large, very productive, (almost tropical!) greenhouse. Dingle Dell annexe has 3 bedrooms - a king and a twin on the ground floor, with a further king upstairs, all furnished with quality oak furniture, deep mattresses and quality bedding. The bathrooms are both beautifully fitted with travertine floor tiles, with a walk in rainfall shower and a very comfy slipper bath on the ground floor, and a luxury shower over the bath on the first floor. Both bathrooms are also fitted with luxurious "I Love Eco Essentials" toiletries. There is a gorgeous woodburner, with logs provided, in the ground floor living area, which is used to boost the hot water if the sun lets us down! This then opens onto a sunspace with a dining table and amazing views across our meadow and out onto East Devon. Stunning hand made oak stairs wind up to the first floor from the sunspace, into an open living / dining and bespoke hand made oak kitchen, plus the king bedroom and bathroom. The layout is great for grand parents, parents and children, or multiple couples holidaying together as it still achieves a level of privacy and space if required! We also have an amazing private gym / sauna/ games room suite which is available to book for your exclusive use for an additional charge. This is available to annexe guests over 18 years only. There is lots of space for easy parking on site and a covered charging bay for electric cars if required.
We are at the end of a long, unmetalled track, right on the edge of Ottery St Mary surrounded by beautiful East Devon countryside. Exeter is only 10 miles away, and the stunning East Devon (Jurassic) coast is just 6 miles away. Head to the coast for a beach walk or beach day, plus activities such as kayaking and fossil hunting, plus the famous South West coast path. A choice of bike trails are nearby and a footpath across the surrounding farmland is just outside the gate! A walk along the River Otter, which leads all the way to Budleigh Salterton from Ottery St Mary, is glorious and shouldn't be overloooked, a few miles south takes you to the village of Tipton St John, with a very lovely country pub... Keep a look out for amazing wildlife including otters and even beavers along the riverbanks!
  • A truly spectacular place to stay. Kevin and Karen were very welcoming and we enjoyed our stay very much.

  • Kevin and Karen made sure we were comfortable but at the same time were always available if we needed something. The house is even more amazing than it looks on Grand Designs. Everything is beautifully crafted, beautiful to look at and the walls seem to almost hug you. We're only sorry that we were too busy driving around sightseeing to take the time to go for a walk through the meadow and see if we could see any otters in the stream. Would recommend this to anyone!

  • We loved staying here as it was spacious for the 7 of us and we had 8 round the table with no trouble. The house was warm on a cold and stormy half term. The house is in an ideal location and is close to everything and the car parking spot was large and easy to access. The house is a perfect place to base yourself to explore all that the area has to offer. Michaela was quick to answer a couple of queries and check was so easy. We can't wait to come back!

Warm, well equipped family home-can accommodate up to 6 people. Private garden to the back and ample parking. 5 min walk to the River Sid and then onwards, through The Byes to the beach in a further 15 min (5 min drive). A lovely base for exploring numerous local beaches along the Jurassic Coast, the Donkey Sanctuary & the whole of the south west by car, bike or public transport. IMPORTANT Please note, straight line distance to the beach is 1.2 miles. Approx 20 min walk or a 5 minute drive
Private enclosed rear garden with private parking on the property in a residential area. Affordable and comfortable accommodation in a very beautiful coastal town. Please note two single beds in bedroom 3 are bunk beds. The property has one bathroom/toilet and it is on the ground floor. Smart TV is catch-up / NETFLIX etc only. We are legally licence free.
We are situated outside the hustle and bustle of the main town but only five mins from all local amenities such as a supermarket, newsagent, chemist, bakers, vet, butchers and recently renovated pub. Only 15-20 min walk to the beach via a stunning riverside park, or if driving the coast is only 5 mins away. If you don't fancy walking then local buses can take you into town in just a few minutes. Our home is situated in a seaside town but is not a beachside property. Please take time to make sure that the location is appropriate for you. Our home is situated on a firendly and busy housing development where Ross grew up. We have family members and close friends living nearby and we love the community feel. Please take time to check that our home is what and where you expect (use g maps). Sidmouth has many options for accomodation each with their pros and cons. If you want a 5 star setting right on the beach then a hotel may suit you better. If you want to feel at home, where you can come and go as you please, don't mind a pleasant walk or short drive / cycle to the beach and living amongst the locals, then our home on air bnb will be perfect for you. We have worked hard to attain superhost status so if there is anything we can do please don't hesitate to ask.
  • A lovely little cosy cottage with all the home comforts and some nice touches. Fresh flowers, milk, bread and essentials on arrival, easy and flexible check-in, Lisa and Ross were easy to get hold of if we needed anything! Highly recommended.

They also managed to provide a sumptuous continental breakfast of fresh fruit salad, cereal yogurt, toast, coffee from a proper coffee machine or tea - all cleverly presented in a micro kitchen set up. Ingenious .... we would definitely recommend this room for a visit to Sidmouth.

The Garden Studio is a Detached purpose built contemporary living space tucked away in our garden (we can't see you and you can't see us) within about 15 mins level riverside walk through a park to shops, esplanade and the sea. Private deck and lawn space which is a mass of bluebells and daffodils in the spring. LUXURY bed Linen and superb White Company towels. Lovely rural walks within 2/300 yards. Well insulated, double glazed and oak flooring. A convenient cabin and ideal 'reading' retreat.
You are quite private with your own pedestrian access through our garden ( and newly planted small orchard which is full of daffodils and bluebells in the spring) so can come and go as you like. The Studio was purpose built about 9 years ago and is well insulated, double glazed with a large sliding door and is cedar clad. It has oak flooring with a small decked area to the front. The Studio measures about 4 x 6 metres and is 2.10 m high inside (or 6ft 9ins) so please take this into account if you are very tall. We aim to make your stay a lovely experience with LUXURY, WHITE COMPANY hydro cotton towels including very large bath sheets as well as bed linen from The Secret Linen Company and a KING SIZE BED with a lovely comfortable mattress. Retro 'Eames' chairs and designer bedside tables. There are also two HANDMADE Gabbeh-Qashqai tribal rugs made by nomads from Persia. These touches of luxury complete the picture. There are games such as chess, Boggle, backgammon and playing cards and lots of books if it's a wet day. An ideal retreat for short escapes and those who love the idea of living in a 'cabin'. PS We also supply free slippers which you can take home when you leave. One less thing for you to pack for your visit. The Studio is in a PET FREE environment. For bird lovers, spring and early summer is a cacophony of bird song with our own Tawny Owl who lives in the trees nearby a Green Woodpecker and Nightjars on the common nearby.
It is a quiet residential area which is readily accessible by foot , (about 15 mins) to the shops, pubs, beach and sea via a lovely level riverside walk called The Byes by the River Sid where you might see the kingfishers or if you are REALLY lucky, an otter. There are many other walks right on hand including wild flower meadows and we will leave maps with routes marked. The Norman Lockyer Observatory is on the top of Salcombe Hill only about a mile or so from us and is a great place to explore the heavens. They often have open nights. Just check on the internet. The South West Coastal Path and the Jurassic Coast is right on hand with stunning walks that emanate virtually from the doorstep of The Garden Studio. There is a cycle path close by to the beach/town if you fancy exploring the area on your bikes and a lockable bike shed right next to the Studio to keep them in . The Donkey Sanctuary is only about 1.5 miles away and is a great half day out with many attractions not least being that its FREE.

  • We had a lovely time staying at The Garden Studio. It was immaculately clean, well designed and decorated, and has everything you need. Ian met us on arrival, and Carol and Ian’s communication prior to our visit was great. There are lots of nice touches, including a bookcase with a range of books. As it was February, we didn’t use the garden much, but the space was lovely with some spring flowers starting to bloom. The location is perfect, easy access to Sidmouth town centre, and lots to do in the area. We would highly recommend staying here!

  • Lovely cottage, great with the animals and lovely thoughtful welcome pack

    Jules2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • A wonderfully cosy but spacious cottage in a fantastic location. Comfy beds, great amenities nearby and some very friendly (four and two legged neighbours). The cottage was sparking clean and had everything we needed. Would definitely recommend for a family.

    Emma2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • We chose this cottage accommodation for practical purposes - we were in the area for a family wedding. That meant we only stayed two nights and were in and out for much of the time. What we appreciated was the genuine ‘cottage feel’ but with plenty of space for our needs. We arrived to find eggs, from Jill’s chickens, in the kitchen - happily consumed for breakfast. As our focus was on the events of the weekend we needed a place where we could be comfortable in the in between times. And, comfortable we were. They were four of us so we more than enough room. The only thing to note is that the cottage is set back along a main road. No problem for most but light sleepers might simply need to make some provision (my wife used ear plugs and it was not an issue). As I said our stay was focussed on other events, and also during the winter. We were four adults but could see that in the summer the grounds out back, with animals, could provide an excellent spot for families with younger children. In conclusion, a happy stay and recommended.

    Mark2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • We recently spent a thoroughly enjoyable weekend at Jill's lovely cottage. Excellent facilities throughout, with thoughtful touches from Jill & Steve. One of the many highlights was being able to help with the feeding of the resident animals - with the added bonus of collecting the freshly laid eggs (breakfast bliss!!) Ideally located for travelling into nearby Sidmouth, Beer, Seaton or Branscombe. A visit to the Donkey Sanctuary is a must as well. Would definitely recommend staying at Jill's place if you're in the area. Mike, Ann, Jayne & Paul

  • What a place! Great location, great property, fab place to stay!

    Northernshire2019-11-21T00:00:00Z
  • Check in smooth and efficient. There's a key box, but Jills husband was there as we arrived. The cottage is lovely. Its warm, spacious and has everything you need for a holiday or short break.

  • A cosy traditional cottage, with all the amenities that were needed, in a great location to explore the likes of Sidmouth, Beer, Lyme Regis and the Jurassic Coast.

  • The property is very cute and 'cottagy'. The main road is a bit noisey, but the double glazed windows keep most of the noise out. We were there in February, so we didn't use the garden, but I'd imagine in the summer it would be great to just chillax in the garden. You can't park outside, but there is a little space outside next door where you can quickly pull in to unload shopping etc. Overall it's great value for money and I would be more than happy to stay there again.

  • The house is just lovely and made extra special by the amazing hosts added touches. There was milk in the fridge and a cake on the table when we arrived, plenty of tea and coffee and all the essentials. The house was spotlessly clean, modern and so comfortable for 8 of us (6 adults, 2 children). Our dog was made to feel very welcome with treats, towels and poo bags free for us to use. There is plenty of space inside and out with a lovely garden at the back. Also plenty of parking spaces. The location is fab, far enough from the town to be quiet but only 10 mins drive in to Sidmouth or Budleigh Salterton. Pub in walking distance and a local shop not far. Short drive to supermarkets too. There is a field to the front of the house perfect for walking the dog or just to stretch your legs. We would definitely come back to stay here again!

This beautiful room is a part of our new house. Everything is brand new, stylish, comfortable and very clean. Cranbrook itself is a new town situated in the outskirts of Exeter city, with a very quick access to M5 and A30. Our place is close to Exeter Airport , but very quiet. Rugby stadium, Sowton , West Point and Crealy Park are not far from here. Parking on the street is always available. Taxi to the airport is about £10-12.

It is also very close to the airport and a bus service into the city is about 10 mins walk. As this is a new build, use google maps if your satnav isn't up to date.

  • Wonderful, cosy little nook in the Devon countryside and absolutely what we needed. Warm, homely and brilliantly equipped for us and our daughter - the only additional cost has been having to acquire our own panda after someone didn’t want to leave the cottage resident behind! Well placed for access to Sidmouth and Exeter. Thoroughly recommended.

The Annex is a beautifully compacted space which can be adapted for disabled guests. It is just off the A30 with great links to Exeter and only 8 miles from Exmouth. The Annex is at the back of a house called Upper Spilsby which has a private driveway for you to use. The Annex has its only private entrance and comes with a double bed, cooker, microwave, fridge, kettle, toaster and dishwasher. There is a TV and small table and chairs.
All the thresholds at the Annex are levelled and there is easy disabled access to the property. There is a shower stool and commode available upon request. There is a sofa bed which could be used if it was a family or party of three. I wouldn't recommend any more than three people staying although a booking of four would be considered. A travel cot can also be provided if needed.
The Annex is set in the quiet countryside with gorgeous views down to the sea on a clear day and open countryside. There is a little woodland you can walk through but there aren't many long walks without having to drive to. Ottery St. Mary is a short drive away which offers lots of lovely coffee shops, boutique shops and there is also a Sainsburys there.

  • Radka & Hayden have created a really nice space with thoughtful and practical touches. Spotlessly clean, very comfortable and a good touch of character. It's an annexe attached to their house but it felt totally private and had everything needed for a short stay. If I'm coming back to the Sidmouth area at any point I'd be keen to stay here again.

  • The accommodation is self contained, with a private entrance and en suite; you access it directly from the driveway on the ground floor. It was spotlessly clean, the bed was very large and comfortable and I loved the rainfall shower. It's not a huge space but was perfect for our needs. The town is a short drive away, but you can get the bus nearby (a three-minute walk) if you're planning to have a drink or don't want to bother with parking and I understand there's a pub within walking distance, although we didn't try it out. (We at at Dukes Inn and can recommend!) We requested the booking very last minute but Radka was unflappable and made it happen for us, despite some technical difficulties with AirBnB - thank you Radka! We definitely wouldn't hesitate to stay again if we are in the area.

  • What an exceptional property. Top class in every way. I would highly recommend whether it be for a holiday or for business.

  • We were impressed with the outstanding detail of what this accommodation has to offer. A nice balance of stylish detail this place has to offer and yet it still offers a comfortable and practical place to stay. Thank you for letting us stay in your beautiful barn conversion, it was perfect.

    Shaz2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • We had a brilliant few days at Sarah and Mark’s barn conversion. It was so nice to be able to get away from city life and be based so close to the coastline. The barn is beautifully decorated, comfortable and brilliantly equipped if you want to do some cooking there. They were on hand for anything we needed. We really enjoyed the fresh eggs from their hens, so much so we brought some home with us! It was a great base for us to be able to explore the surrounding area. Thank you for a great stay.

    Philip2020-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • Sarah and Mark are great hosts at this lovely property. The barn was immaculate and stylish and perfect for access to the East Devon and Dorset coast.

    Eleanor2020-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • What a wonderful barn conversion - superb design and lovely interior furnishings and fittings. An immaculate place to stay and perfect for exploring the scenic Jurassic Coast nearby. We will hopefully return soon and I would not hesitate to recommend to those seeking quality at a reasonable price.

    Stephen2020-01-25T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely weekend away at the Barn. It is beautifully presented, extremely cosy and relaxing located in the most idyllic village. There was everything we could have possibly needed, especially with opting to cook a few nights, with a lot of thoughtful added touches such as DVDs, games and speaker for us to have chilled out evenings. Perfect location as well for walks with the dog (who too had a bed provided for him at the barn!) and also for exploring Exeter as well. Perfect stay all round!

    Charlotte2020-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • We had the perfect stay at the Barn! It's beautifully presented with Sarah & Mark thinking of all the extra touches to make it feel like a home from home (albeit a luxury one!). There really was everything we needed from dog beds & bowls, a full DVD & games selection and a fully equipped kitchen to make our stay super easy and comfortables. The village is lovely with great walks nearby and the local pub was very friendly. We'd definitely come back!

    Becky2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • The Barn is so cosy, warm and welcoming. A lovely little place for the family to return to after being out all day. There are nice big sofas and a large dining table. The kitchen is really well equipped. Everything was spotlessly clean and thoughtfully put together. There is lots to do nearby and it is a beautiful village. The Barn is an easy two minute walk to the pub and local shop. The church bells on Sunday morning were so lovely. In all, a fantastic stay, and great hosts. Thank you.

TipToes is in a quiet residential area, 1.5 miles to Sidmouth town center. There are several lovely walks close by, as well as supermarkets, chemists, bakery and petrol station. Sidmouth is a Regency seaside town with plenty to offer the holidaymaker. There is a great selection of restaurants, cafes and shops, as well as The Radway Cinema for those rainy days. The Manor Pavillion Theatre for some wonderful entertainment opportunities. The Donkey Sanctuary (and restaurant) is only a few miles away with a free bus in the summer. Also the Norman Lockyer Observatory for the astronomy enthusiasts (limited opening). The beautiful Byes Walk along the river Sid from Sidford to Sidmouth, is about 10 minutes walk from our home. Not to mention the Sidmouth Folk Week (August); Donkey Week, usually in May, at the Donkey Sanctuary; Sidmouth Regatta, and the amazing Red Arrows fly-over (late August at the start of the regatta); and of course, the beach!!
  • Ali and J are the most friendly, welcoming and thoughtful hosts. The holiday I had staying in their home ticked all my boxes - comfortable, clean, up to date, lots of helpful information and a lovely dog to pet!!

  • By far the best Airbnb we’ve stayed in with regards to the hosts! We were made to feel so welcome, and I actually said to a friend it felt like staying with family!! We will be returning and also recommending Ali’s place to anyone that mentions travelling to Sidmouth or the surrounding areas 👍

    James2019-08-05T00:00:00Z
  • Really nice little self contained annex with two bedrooms and access to west facing sun-deck and garden with view across valley. Ali and her husband John ("J") are super hosts and we found them excellent company, though I am sure they would let you be if you wanted privacy. They property is up a hill about two miles out of Sidmouth so your own car is probably a necessity, especially as taxis can be hit and miss in the evenings. We really loved our stay.

  • Wendy was a great host who made us feel very welcome in her lovely home. The breakfast was a nice treat in the morning. Thank you again for a great stay. Would definitely recommend.

    Amy2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Wendy is a lovely host and has a super clean and warm home. Lovely private shower room, the comfy bed an quality linen ensured a well earned sleep after a long drive .Loved the location just 10 minutes walk from the beach front and facilities. Wendy makes a darn good fresh fruit salad with muesli for breakfast. I do think however that her rates are too low - possibly the best value accommodation in Devon and now our go-to place down there.

    Ian2020-01-17T00:00:00Z
  • I felt welcomed as soon as Wendy opened the door. The room was spacious and clean. It smelt amazing too and you can tell she takes pride in being the perfect host. She’s open to conversation and she respected my privacy. The bed was comfortable and I loved the shower facility. Loads of power and heat if required. I access to my own shower/toilet. Again I could tell she has invested in quality. The highlight was my breakfast. I had my own granola but preferred her fruit salad she prepared every morning. I appreciated the effort she put into preparation and also the quality of the fruit. It was like being at home. I was free to come and go and this was important for me. I would definitely recommend Wendy’s place. It’s literally 10minute walk to the coast.

  • My Xmas break was perfect and exactly what I was looking for. Easy to walk into town (about 10 minutes) The Donkey Sanctuary was easy to reach on the bus. Wendy was such a lovely person and I was very much at home with the two very friendly cats. TV in bedroom or the use of the lounge. Wendy lit the fire which was so cosy. The breakfast she provided was perfect and her garden lovely in warmer months. The whole house was very clean and sole use of shower/bathroom. Will return again. Jen

  • I booked this accommodation for 2 of my employees working in the area. Beautiful accommodation, spotlessly clean and has everything needed for a comfortable home from home stay. The host Heather is amazing, goes over and above to make sure you stay is perfect and hassle free. Nothing is to much trouble, even supplying a full breakfast for a small extra charge, which was lovely and communication spot on. Had to cut our visit short due to unforeseen circumstances, but would definitely recommend to others a be returning when back in the area

  • This place is a true haven. The accommodation is slightly apart from the main house, and the host shows just the right balance between being attentive and allowing plenty of space and freedom to enjoy the beautiful setting. My second visit.

  • Rosemary is a great host. Her place was immaculate, very clean and well organized, had everything I needed. Rosemary explained everything verbally although there was a folder with all information, instructions and rules in bedroom and lounge. Bedding smelling cleanliness, nice thick towels, bottled water in room, TV in room and in lounge, tea/coffee available at anytime, breakfast ordered from previous night. A great experience in total, would absolutely recommend it.
