Birken Cottage - Holidays in the Herbsthausen sawmill

Our three one-room apartments — Ahorn, Linde, and Birke — combine the historic charm of Herbsthausen with contemporary design. Each apartment is completely unique and has been modernized by us. They offer space for two to three people each. The apartments are part of “Herbsthausen”, an cultural project in the town of Gartow. We are renovating a historic sawmill and transforming it into a future-oriented place for art, industrial heritage, living, working, international exchange, and relaxation.

You are booking a 2018 lovingly renovated and furnished approx. 80 square meter apartment in the beautiful Wendland. The apartment is fantastically located between a large organic orchard meadow and an 18-hole golf course. The garden and meadow offer you plenty of opportunities to relax and enjoy nature. A cozy apartment with a large living room, fully equipped kitchen, separate bedroom and small bathroom awaits you. The cozy location in the courtyard provides peace and relaxation, and you will find shopping and gastronomy in the immediate vicinity. Here you will find ideal conditions for extensive bike tours in nature along the Elbe.

Unfortunately, our farm is not suitable for excessive parties. Our house was built around 1850. The house & barn of the listed 3-sided courtyard are built in oak half-timbering. There are 10 wedding linden trees around the house. In November, when the lime trees are pruned, the house can be seen in all its splendor. From May onwards, it slowly disappears behind shady foliage, and so remains wonderfully cool throughout the summer... 

Stylish and bright apartment

The vacation rental is located on the upper floor of a beautiful listed half-timbered house from 1840 in a small village. It is spacious and bright and offers beautiful views of the large surrounding garden. We have lovingly furnished the apartment with partly antique furniture and contemporary art on the walls. In the garden, there is a private area for our guests on a meadow under apple trees to sit and relax.

Historical Gem with Character

As a professional violin maker, we have a sense of detail. In our guest apartment, stylish baroque elements from the origin of the house combine with the most modern equipment possible. This combination guarantees authenticity and coziness. During the renovation, we tried to get as much of the original substance as possible. Whole warning: A low ceiling beams dating back to 1775 crosses the space.
