Popular amenities for South West holiday rentals

All about South West

In a country known for its incredible natural scenery, earning the accolade of most scenic route is no small feat, but ask around and you’ll find that many people give this honour to the South Coast. Within easy road trip distance of both cosmopolitan Sydney and the country’s capital Canberra, this coastal region of New South Wales is a flurry of white sand beaches, dense rainforest, rushing waterfalls, and historic lighthouses. Its abundance of orchards, dairy farms, and vineyards also makes this one of the biggest foodie destinations in Australia.

As you cruise along the Sea Cliff Bridge, with crashing waves of the Tasman Sea below and limestone cliffs above, keep a lookout for migrating whales and dolphins playing just off the shoreline. You can surf on world-renowned beaches in Shoalhaven and Killalea, snorkel tropical reefs in Jarvis Bay, indulge in fresh seafood on the aptly-named Oyster Coast, and watch the Milky Way light up unobstructed skies.

What are the top things to do in South West?

Kiama Blowhole

Kiama Blowhole is a geological wonder. As waves crash against the centuries-old volcanic rocks of this sea cavern, water spouts into the air like a giant whale’s blowhole, raining salty mist. There’s no telling when the fountain will erupt, so be sure to leave plenty of time to wait on nature’s whims. While you’re here, see a heritage-protected 19th century lighthouse, take in wetlands and beaches on the Kiama Coastal Walk, or swim in the Blowhole Point Ocean Pool, carved into the rocks.

Oysters and wine

Along the Oyster Coast, 13 environmentally-friendly estuaries harvest some of the world’s best oysters. Shuck rock oysters, rare Angasi “flat” oysters, and Pacific oysters, and taste the freshness of the sea and the difference of the terroir in each one. Complete the experience with a visit to one of Shoalhaven’s many wineries to sip on crisp Chardonnay in a picturesque vineyard setting.

Surfing at Killalea

Killalea is not only a beloved spot for local and visiting surfers, it’s also an officially recognised National Surfing Reserve, with eight miles of coastline peppered with volcanic rocks. The two best surfing beaches here are The Farm — a popular spot for surfers of all levels with breathtaking views of the national park forests — and The Mystic, a more challenging spot with rough waves crashing one after another.
