In the winter one can enjoy cosy evenings besides the various fireplaces, long dinners in the kitchen or baths in one of the bathrooms.

Lyts Kastieltsje, a quiet cottage in an orchard

Lyts Kastieltsje is a short walk from the Waddenzee, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the largest tidal area on Earth. The cottage was once part of the cooling barn for the old fruit farm. It is surrounded by just over a hectare of gardens, orchards and meadow which provide a home for our three sheep, bees and many species of birds. The orchards contain plum, quince, medlar and different varieties of apple and pear trees. We also share the place our dog Jack, 10 ducks and some chickens.

You can visit the mill and buy groceries at the bakery around the corner. There is a small local history museum, refreshments and a flower shop. The cities of Dokkum and Leeuwarden are easily accessible, as are the Wadden Sea coast and the ferry ports to the islands of Ameland and Schiermonikoog.

Apart from the sounds of birds, the rustling of the wind and in the distance a tractor, you hear nothing at all here. The sunsets can be amazingly beautiful here.
