The principal deity is Benzaiten, Uga Happi Benzaiten, who came from Togakushi. As a water deity, it is worshipped by many people involved in agriculture, fishing and other activities related to "water". The next morning, before sunrise, the resident priest or a certified guide will take you to the morning service at Zenkoji Temple, which has been held continuously for over a thousand years. In the spacious main hall of Zenkoji Temple, candles are lit, the double gong sounds to signal the beginning of the morning service, and monks from each temple in the mountains quickly make their way to the main hall. The sounds of voices, scripture readings and drums spread through the silence. In the dim light, hands are clasped and everyone is immersed in prayer. There is a moment when the mind becomes empty. It is ancient, long-standing, and unchanging. When you return to Renka-in and enter the earthen floor, breakfast is being prepared in the kitchen at the back, and the aroma of dashi stock drifts gently through the air.
