The Tower rooms are in a refurbished historic defensive tower (dating from 1574) providing a mini castle experience. Through a huge stone entrance, into an inner panelled entrance hall and through a private door up an ancient and narrow staircase to a tiny sitting area with shower room and kitchenette off. Finally up again with a spiral stone staircase leading to a romantic and secluded upper chamber. Medieval and bijoux - a micro experience of being a Laird or Lady of the House for the night.

Unforgettable stay at the Victorian Water Tower

This historical victorian gem in the deepest Herts countryside has been kept a secret for the last century. Few people have seen it, let alone been inside it! Incredibly it’s only 32 minutes from King’s Cross on the Stevenage rainline and a quick 10/15 mins taxi journey. Ideal for quick getaways! However please note, we are not a venue for parties or events that extend beyond the 8 paying guests. The Tower is not suitable for children under the age of 12 or anyone with mobility issues.

It has been converted into comfortable accommodation sleeping 4 in two bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms. Every attempt has been made to preserve the original components of the water tower . The Tower stands on the escarpment 400 feet above Chatsworth House, on the edge of Stand Wood. There are panoramic views over Capability Brown's magnificent Park. This unique and fascinating building was completed c.1582 for Bess of Hardwick, ancestress of the Dukes of Devonshire, to designs by the famous Elizabethan architect Robert Smythson. Please note that while this cottage is child friendly, we recommend older children only due to the spiral staircase.
