Lake Tinaroo Waterfront Retreat
All about Tinaroo Falls Dam
Located in Far North Queensland, Tinaroo Falls Dam was built in 1958 to provide a consistent water supply to the tobacco crops of the Atherton Tableland. The adjacent Lake Tinaroo is a popular spot for anglers due to being stocked with fish.
Nearby, you can also visit the tiny settlement of Tinaroo that is home to just over 200 people and was originally built to house the dam’s workers. Although the town is small, there are many amenities to help visitors during your stay here. If you’re looking for something specific, you can also head to the bigger towns of Yungaburra and Atherton, which are within a 20-minute drive away.
The Danbulla National Park is located close to the dam. In the park, it is possible to explore the beautiful crater lakes as you make your way through the park’s rainforests featuring strangler figs as well as eucalyptus and acacia forests.
What are the top things to do in Tinaroo Falls Dam?
Lake Tinaroo & TInaroo Falls Dam
A popular spot for swimming, sailing, and walking, Lake Tinaroo was created by the damming of the Barron River. The dam wall is a gravity concrete structure that stands 43 metres high and 533 metres long. While it’s interesting to look at, the main highlight here is Lake Tinaroo. Since it was built, it has also become a popular spot for fishing, thanks to the large stock of barramundi, sooty grunter, sleep cod, archerfish, and fork-tailed catfish.
Cathedral Fig
This gorgeous strangler fig tree is an impressive 500 years old and it is large enough that people can walk inside of it and see its root system. The tree is located in the Danbulla State Forest and it is a lovely drive to get there, passing through rain forests and pine forests.
Crater Lakes National Park
This gorgeous national park is home to two sparkling crater lakes surrounded by lush rainforest. Lake Barrine features a lovely walking track surrounded by giant bull kauri pine trees and boat cruises that allow you to explore more of the lake. Lake Eacham is the perfect place to go for a refreshing swim while an array of birds flit through the trees overhead.
