Your guide to Sandy Point

Welcome to Sandy Point

In Sandy Point, life revolves around the water, whether it’s swimming, surfing, snorkelling, stand-up paddleboarding, or just gazing at the ocean. Nestled amongst the sand dunes, Sandy Point is unhampered by new buildings or towering construction projects. Here, it’s all about the majestic scenery, with 11 kilometres of sweeping sand and imposing rock formations at your disposal. There are plenty of wildlife-spotting opportunities, whether you’re a fan of marine species or an avid birder.

Shops and restaurants don’t take up much of the main street, Beach Parade, but the town of Foster is a short drive away for more food options, and nearby Fish Creek’s creative spirit abounds in its colourful art galleries and craft shops. And in the event you don’t want to tear yourself from the shore even to eat, there are public barbecue pits dotted around town, offering you the option of DIY dinners on the beach.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Sandy Point

Sandy Point can get busy during holiday periods and the peak summer season, between December and March. Nevertheless, the sweeping coastline and miles of rugged beach mean that you can often walk for kilometres without meeting anyone, no matter the time of year. Once winter passes and spring rolls around, the changing weather brings stunning native wildflower blooms as well as higher daytime temperatures. September in particular is the best time for surfing, with clean waves and light winds, but bear in mind that the Surf Life Savers aren’t on patrol on weekdays.

Top things to do in Sandy Point

Shallow Inlet

The Roy Henderson Trail winds its way towards this family-friendly paradise for swimming, water sports, and wildlife spotting. Although most visitors come for the slower pace of life, you won’t be disappointed if you like things a little faster: The world speed record for sailing was set here in 2009. Whether you’re on dry land or out on the ocean, there are more than 150 bird species to spot.

Big Drift

Big Drift is a visually impressive network of sand dunes, ready and waiting to be climbed, descended, and admired from all angles. People in the know head here at sunrise or sunset for a spectacular sight. This natural wonder is well signposted, but also well hidden — and the going can be rather tough. Be prepared to clamber up some extremely steep slopes.

Wilsons Promontory National Park

Bush, beach, and beasts — this vast coastal park offers something for every visitor. The Prom, as the locals call it, extends over a whopping 50,000 hectares. Don some snorkeling gear to explore the largest marine reserve in the state or stay dry and make a tally of how many wild creatures you come across.
