We are the Benbow KOA RV Park and we have a variety of cabins to rent. Located in the Benbow Valley along the Eel River, we are just off of Highway 101 surrounded by mountains and trees. Amenities include a playground, sport court, seasonal pool, hot tub, dog park, river access, game room and convenient store.
You will be renting one of three private rooms with its own private bathroom. The unit is a small, simple room with heat & AC, a mini fridge, mini microwave and a full bathroom including a shower.
We are our own neighborhood. A historic hotel, the RV park and golf course. There are some residences tucked away in the hillsides but this is a rural setting. Up the highway a few miles is the city of Garberville which hasgas stations, coffee shops, a grocery store and restaurants.
  • I booked a trip last minute and this place was perfect for what I needed. It was small and cozy — one room with a bed, a bathroom, and a sink plus a refrigerator and TV. It’s located in an RV park and you can walk down to the river from the room. It was beautiful and quiet. There’s a short walk to the Benbow Historic Inn where you can grab a bite to eat or a drink. I came in after the office closed but luckily they called me ahead of time to let me know that I can check-in at the Historic Inn. Very communicative. I would definitely book again.

  • This cabin is perfect if you want the best out of southern Humboldt! It’s a quaint little cabin RIGHT next to the river, and you get to sleep surrounded by the sound of the Redwoods! It’s less than 2 minutes away from Garberville and a little more from Redway, and the folks in the office can recommend some nice pleaces for you to visit. They’re very passionate about where they live and it shows. The interior is small, but if you’re like me and like cozy places, it’s just perfect! It was VERY clean, almost like nobody had never stayed in my room at all. I loved my experience here and hope to come back for my next Humboldt adventure!

Year-round sunsets. Quiet. Hot tub. No crowds; isolate. Relax and unwind in this cozy and clean space; it's all yours. There's no one else to interrupt your stay. The cabin is small and intimate, but is stocked with everything you need for a comfortable stay; soak in the hot tub or enjoy mountain views. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need for cooking, along with coffee, tea, and cereals. Basic toiletries and bedding are provided.
This one bedroom cabin has a Cal-King bed and a Full futon for additional sleeping. We use fine cotton sheets and pillow cases, a down comforter in the winter; we are certain that you will sleep well. There's also an entertainment center with books, music, art supplies, and DVDs. In the fully stocked kitchen, you'll find everything you need to make your meals. If you're missing something, just ask. The bathroom is spacious and includes a washer and dryer. We offer fresh, soft towels for your bathing pleasure. There is plenty of space to pitch a tent outside, as well as a hammock to enjoy the sunsets from. There is a hot tub at the Cabin that is solely for the use of our guests. Because of the excellent view and our Mediterranean climate, the Cabin's location can be windy, as well as hot in the summer. But this also means that there is great star-gazing at night. Summers can be hot, up to 105° F, with nighttime temperatures dropping to the 50s to 60s which means that you can open the windows in the evening and cool off. There's usually a pleasant breeze to cool you off. Winters are beautiful, with the rainy season bringing the green lushness of the Pacific Northwest. At 1000 feet elevation, Woodwind Hill is just below the snow line but we occasionally get dusted. Our average annual rainfall is about 70". Cell phone coverage in Southern Humboldt can be spotty for some carriers. T-Mobile customers can have difficulty with reception. We do not have Wi-Fi. While we have a TV for DVD use, there is NO cable or satellite TV services.
Until the Covid debacle is over, Humboldt County is not allowing us to rent to anyone who lives outside of Humboldt. We're very sorry. We have hired the North Coast Clean Team (707-497-4215) to help us make sure that the Cabin is perfect for you. As a result, this has raised our overall price. Please know that the money spent on our Cabin goes to support 3 different families. The $50 cleaning fee is based on the average time it takes to clean our Airbnb. Thank you for your support and understanding. IN-HOUSE BODY WORK is now available! We are very happy to announce that Master Body Worker Flurina Niggli is available to do work at the Cabin, or at her place of business. Go to https://www.flurinaniggli.com/ to see all of the possibilities. It will be UP TO YOU to contact Flurina and set up the appointment to coincide with your stay at the Cabin. LOCATION: The historic Benbow Inn, KOA campground & golf course, and Benbow State Recreation Area are a short drive away, as well as walking trails and redwood groves. Garberville is about 10 minutes away. Shelter Cove and the Pacific Ocean is an hour drive. An hour to the north is the Victorian village of Ferndale, and bit further Eureka and Arcata. Arcata is home to Humboldt State University. There are many options for outdoor activities. Tell us what you want to do and we'll send you in the right direction. Please note that the Eel River can become unhealthy beginning in August. Low flows and high temperatures create algae blooms, which, while causing itchyness for people, can be fatal for dogs. Pay attention and swim only where the water runs clean. Check out our Airbnb Guidebook for local sites and activities. We love our community and would like to help you get to know the area. Tell us what you love to do, what sights you want to see, and we'll help as best we can.
  • The cabin was beautiful and Rob was super helpful!

    Shannon2020-03-17T00:00:00Z
  • Rob and Marie’s place is awesome. From the stunning views to the little touches, everything was perfect and the only thing that would have made our stay any better would have been staying for a few more days.

    Angad2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • This place was amazing. Beautiful views, easy to find, with lots of thoughtful touches. The fresh eggs were delicious and the little snacks were very much appreciated! I will be back for sure!

  • Rob & Marie’s place is amazing. They put so much thought into every element of the house, everything was personalized and it was amazing. My friends and I had a great time. Recommend it 100%.

  • First of all, the property & view is breath taking! The cabin its self is beautifully decorated. extremely cozy and very private. With farm fresh eggs and quality choice cearials and milks in the fridge, among lots of other things. This cabin TRULY felt like "my home away from home"... only WAY BETTER. The hot tub was so relaxing! I cant wait to visit Southern Humboldt again just so i can book this cabin again. Thank you Rob & Marie for the rejuvenating stay. Looking forward to staying again, soon :)

    Amanda2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • We had an AWESOME time staying at this cabin. This was a last minute trip and we didn't expect anything however everything turned out to be perfect. My partner and I watched the sunset on the hammock, food and live music at Cecil's were great, soaked in hot tub and we found the winter hexagon in the sky. We met Rob and Marie the next day (and the dogs and chickens!) and they are genuinely nice people! We thoroughly enjoyed this weekend getaway and it was great to learn more about this part of California and met with Rob and Marie. I would recommend staying at this cabin anytime!

    Jared2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • We loved staying at Rob and Marie's place. The house is comfortable and stylish, with thoughtful visual touches - very romantic and absolutely perfect for a couple. The mountain view is spectacular, the oak tree view from the bedroom is bucolic and intimate. We loved the hot tub. Honestly, if we weren't on a schedule, we would have stayed at least a couple more days.

Nestled in the Heart of the Redwoods this little Cottage is warm and inviting. It's Not fancy, but comfortable. Fresh Gourmet Coffee, Hot Chocolate and Hot Apple cider awaits you. Flat screen TV with DVDs. Wifi available. 5 minutes walking distance from town.
  • Great location. You can walk to town if you don’t mind a bit of an uphill walk on the way back. Very clean and tidy. Excellent communication. We had an extra late check in due to our traveling circumstances, and Rebecca had the extra sleeping area on the couch made up as a comfy bed for us. As well as had it nicely heated. It was so great to come into a warm place and be able to relax. She went above and beyond by having breakfast items in the refrigerator for us. We would stay here again.

One large bedroom with 2 queen size beds and a pull out sofa. TV in the living room and bedroom with Amazon Fire Stick TV. Walk to golf course, airstrip, restaurants & coffee. Almost oceanfront with whales and seals in your front yard. Possibly the best fishing in California with Salmon, Halibut (California & Pacific), Ling Cod, Abundant Rock Fish, Abalone, Dungeness Crab, etc... An artists inspiration. Fly in fly out with the runway walking distance to the building. Golf course across the street.
A stones throw from amazing cliffs along the edge of the Pacific. Walking distance to our local Venezuelan restaurants Mi Mochima and Gyppo Brewery as well as the Fish Tank coffee shop. Located at the north end of the local golf course and airstrip.
  • Wonderful place with a breathtaking view.

    Jessica2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • This house was worth every hour driving and every penny paid for the excellent view and chance to explore all the little ocean coves. It was cozy, clean, and spacious. The beds were comfy, the shower was hot, the kitchen was great and there was even a washing machine there if you need it. It’s best to bring your own food but there is a general store before you get into town and a tiny store in town, as well as a few restaurants that have various closed hours. The walk down to the cliffs and the ocean view is only a few minutes and then you can walk or drive along the coast and enjoy various entrances to see seals, black sand beach, rocks, giant waves, and even a lighthouse. During the spring it was extremely windy and cloudy but beautiful! It was the perfect impromptu getaway. I’d love to come back over the summer but for the price in the spring, it’s perfect!

    Maria2020-03-06T00:00:00Z
  • Great place close to the ocean and good food!

  • Amazing get-away you must see to appreciate. Brian has a jewel of a property located just off the Avenue of the Giants and truly under the Redwoods on his property. The home is as depicted in the picture and it is warm and comfortable with many thoughtful amenities including the comfortable bed, furniture, writing desk, covered deck and chocolates! He is a gracious host and quick to give your tips and hints depending on what you are looking for.

  • Brian is a really nice guy. Very thoughtful with the cabin laid out immaculately with everything u could need- hot drinks, tourist maps, cooking utensils, shampoos etc. It’s pretty much a treehouse amongst the pine trees. The bedroom and veranda view is amongst the trees. Very peaceful. Highly recommended. 👍🏻

    Jens2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • What you expect when you rent a tree house! Beautiful, secluded and very close to Avenue of the giants!! We had fruit from Brian’s trees with our dinner. The beauty was so relaxing!

    Arlisa2019-10-04T00:00:00Z
  • What an amazing place. The location the views are to die for. The house itself is fantastic and a really great place to hang out and relax. So many thoughtful touches make it really welcoming. Brian is a great host and we cannot recommend this highly enough. An absolute gem

    Simon2019-10-03T00:00:00Z
  • What a wonderfully remote location, yet reasonable close to many things! The location can be a bit challenging though, with narrow roads and an address that Google Maps can get wrong. Follow the link in AirBnB or use "345 Thomas Drive" and all will be fine, but enter "345 Thomas Road" as shown on your confirmation and Google will take you about 1/4-mile down the road past Brian's place. Once here, I didn't want to leave however! Brian is an excellent, very personable host. The fruit trees loaded and ripe for picking. And while there is no real kitchen, light cooking is easily accomplished with a microwave, hotplate, toaster oven, large refrigerator, coffee maker, etc. The stairs leading to the loft/bedroom are easily negotiated as they are carpeted and quite a gentle rise. The bathroom that is downstairs is large and full of light. The large couch and chair in the sitting area were quite comfortable. All in all, when it came time to check out, I really didn't want to! Thank you Brian for sharing such a delightful space...

We are an RV park with cabins along the Highway 101 corridor in the Benbow Valley on the Eel River. Other amenities include a playground, sport court, hot tub, game room, convenient store and a 9-hole golf course. Surrounded by mountains and trees.
We are very rural and it is mainly the KOA and the Benbow Historic Inn here in the valley. A few miles north is the town of Garberville who has a grocery store, gas stations, restaurants, etc. We are one-hour south of Eureka on Highway 101.
  • Quaint space with everything we needed. The cabin itself seemed pretty new; furniture looked quite used and some paint splatter on the floors. Our cabin wasn't right on the river - it was back a couple rows, which was different from what I expected. Amenities at the campground great - what you would typically expect from a KOA. Proximity to the Benbow is pretty special.

  • Comfortable and cozy private guest cottage in an accessible location with fast Wifi and the most thoughtful host! My partner and I stayed at Rebecca's Gold Finch cottage for one night during a brief trip stop in Garberville while exploring the redwoods. The location of the guest house is just up the street from the center of town in a quiet residential area, with convenient access to excellent local businesses and Hwy 101. The interior of the cottage is spacious, clean, and outfitted with all the basic amenities & much more for a comfortable extended stay. Last but not least: Rebecca is among the best of the very best hosts on Airbnb! Her care for guests is reflected in all aspects of her stay experience, from the well-stocked full kitchen to high-quality linens and the cute deco accents that provides a lived-in feel. This is our go-to place to stay in the redwoods, and we couldn't recommend it more to fellow guests who may be so lucky to have the opportunity to stay with Rebecca.

    Shiyi2020-03-16T00:00:00Z
  • I've long felt Airbnb to be one of the best things to happen to travelers since the invention of the airplane. Be it a business or pleasure trip, the ability to have your own space complete the freedoms and comfort of home, but all the while you're not at home, you're in someone else's home, can provide you with a level of joy not possible on many voyages. Rebecca is the best of Airbnb, a friendly but hands off local, who is happy to go the extra mile for your sake, while providing a warm, comfortable, clean, cute safe space to call home. The cottage itself is adorable, small but not tiny, cozy would be the word. She provides an awesome radiator heater, which works perfectly, so no stoking the wood fire all night!!! The queen bed is so comfortable, overlooking your own private garden- the kitchen stocked with breakfast fixings and fresh fruit- fluffy towels and a robust water heater make the morning showers a perfect wake up. It's a quick walk to town, but as quiet as the middle of the woods. I really can't find even one negative about Goldfinch Cottage or its lovely host....one thing, the cottage has slow internet, great phone reception, but her wifi is slow....- so if you're coming to Garberville for it's high speed connection....you'll be disappointed...but even the little I know Rebecca, I feel confident she'll have that sorted out before too long!!! I have fallen in love with the area and with now with a perfect landing pad, I hope to return.

    Gabby2020-03-04T00:00:00Z
  • Rebecca’s place is great! Me and my grandma had a wonderful night of stay! Although we had our own unit, Rebecca is live right next to us in her separate house, which make it perfect to get amazing hospitality from her should we had any needs. She greeted us in person when we checked in and thoughtfully give me an extra blanket during the night. We enjoyed the butter and bacon she left in the fridge for us as well! I would definitely recommend Rebeccas place!

Lea’s redway cottage is in the small town of redway. It is 2 blocks from the Mateel music venue and 20 minutes from the beautiful California redwoods. In addition the ocean is an hour drive away in Shelter Cove.
This location is great for hiking, swimming in the Eel river, fishing, and viewing huge original growth redwoods.
The neighborhood is a small quiet residential area so no large parties

  • Excellent private location right off the main road. Lea’s is clean and quaint. We were grateful for heat as it snowed a bit and was damp and cold as the coast generally is. We enjoyed the sun porch and many thoughtful amenities included. We hope to visit again.

  • Lea’s cottage is a great stay when visiting the Redwoods. It’s within short driving distance of both drive-thru trees, the Avenue of the Giants, and not too far of a drive to Eureka. There were plenty of towels and blankets to spare, and the kitchen as well-stocked with pans, etc. The area is cold at night (winter time) but the wall heater is more than enough to warm you up! I’d certainly stay again in the future. Thanks, Lea!

It was a little loud at points I think due to the fact that it’s next to a trailer park but it’s also within walking distance to multiple restaurants and other things one needs while travelling. Thanks for the stay

    Alice2019-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • The room was much nicer than I expected and we got two full sized beds instead of one King which was a lucky bonus. The TV was new and we made coffee in the little Keurig in the morning. This place had everything we needed and checking in was very easy.

    Rebekah2019-08-19T00:00:00Z
  • A great stay in what is essentially a boutique hotel right over the King Range from Shelter Cove. We stayed two nights and loved the area and great location.

    Andrew2019-08-14T00:00:00Z
  • Comfy and cozy little hotel.

  • Loved it! Molly was excellent host and the rooms are fabulous. Can tell a lot of work is going into this place. The rooms are modern and the soaps are great. You won't be disappointed here for sure!

Come enjoy our sweet 1940's rooms and cottages alongside the famous "Avenue of the Giants" in Humboldt County! This listing is for Room 6. It has has a private bathroom, TV, heating, and 2 beds: one queen and one twin. See you in Humboldt!
  • Graham and Dottie were amazing hosts! We enjoyed hearing their story about "discovering" Phillipsville 20 years ago & their recommendations for places to eat and things to do were right on. The Franklin K. Grove, a short drive or walk nearby, is a wonderful introduction to the peace and glory of the redwoods. The loop path only takes 15 minutes (or as long as you want). In the evening, Graham and Dottie joined us at the firepit in front of the hotel and brought us supplies to make yummy smores. Although our visit was short in time, it was long in enjoyment due to the hospitality of our hosts.

  • If absolutely stay agin! Comfortable space, and insanely nice people!

    Alex2020-01-24T00:00:00Z
  • The Madrona Motor Cottages were a great place to stay! It was easy to extend our stay a second night and the hosts were very responsive and checked in frequently. Also, a very convient location! A great little place to stay on the Avenue of the Giants!

  • Great location and value for money. Would recommend!

  • My stay was great. The fresh redwood scented air outside the room was a treat for my lungs. The unit was organized and clean. The heater worked fast and kept me warm all night. If your booking in the summer there is also a A/C

  • The room was very charming & clean, perfect location, great communication with host & an adorable friendly cat on site :) I would definitely stay here again.

    Aissa2019-12-08T00:00:00Z
  • They were very attentive hosts, even on Thanksgiving. They checked on us and brought us things that we needed. Everything in the room worked well. It was nice and toasty. There are two cute kitties on the property that our daughter loved. The location was great for exploring the Avenue of the Giants, there is a very well stocked store just down the street.

    Jason2019-11-30T00:00:00Z
  • Perfectly cozy rooms right on Avenue of the Giants. Short drive from the groves. Really enjoyed our stay. Particularly loved the cats around who loved being pet!

We offer visitors to Humboldt Redwoods a unique camping experience in a clean, cozy self-contained 23 foot trailer at the end of a road with a gate for privacy and security. Trailer has everything needed for couples, or small families. Our tiny town of Weott is beautifully situated surrounded by Humboldt Redwoods State Park, and on The Avenue of the Giants. Miles of hiking trails are within a short walk from us, as well as the beautiful Eel River. Perfect for kayaking, swimming, and fishing.
My partner, dog, cat, and I live in house next to trailer. We are glad to give advice on hiking, swimming, kayaking, restaurants and activities nearby.
We live on the end of a nice quiet little street right in the middle of tiny Weott. There are 2 churches, a post office, store and school in our little town. The main attraction is the redwoods and river. Our neighborhood is very quiet and we have a gate for privacy and security.
  • Great little trailer right in the middle of the redwoods. Highly recommended and I would definitely stay here again. Keep in mind that it is a small space. I’d recommend no more than two adults.

  • We couldn't have had a more magical time than staying at this deluxe trailer in the redwoods. Theresa and Chris went out of their way to make sure we were happy. The bed is comfortable and the shower and kitchen were roomy considering it is a trailer. Would definitely recommend this airbnb for a unique stay. I hope to return some day!

We are an RV park and golf course on Redwood Highway 101 with cabins. Full size stocked kitchen, full bath, living areas with linens. Playground, convenient store, game room and hot tub on site. On the Eel River with the Benbow Historic Inn within walking distance.
This cabin has a queen bedroom with a full size closet and tv; a sleeping loft with 2 twin beds and a couch that folds out into a double bed. Full kitchen with dining and living areas. The stairs up to the sleeping loft are steep and recommend this area for children over age 5.
We are in a rural area. Our little valley here is on the Eel River, surrounded by mountains and trees. One exit up on Highway 101 is Garberville with restaurants, a grocery store and hardware store. We are one hour south of Eureka on the 101 corridor.
  • Great tiny-house cabin in a RV park near the redwoods. I appreciated the friendliness and hospitality of the staff. Would stay here again. Perfect for our family weekend getaway.

  • The Fox's Den is an absolute treasure. The view alone sells this place but when you arrive you realize it's more than just a view. We were personally greeted by the host Marc as soon as we pulled up to the house. He offered local suggestions for us to check out. The place is extremely spacious and comfortable and has everything you need. It truly is sparkling clean and feels as if you're staying at a friend's house. Malcom the cat is basically like having an optional house cat for your stay. The host will make sure he stays out if you aren't a cat person, but is totally okay with the cat coming inside and snuggling up with you for the night! Overall we had an amazing stay and will most certainly be back!

The town is adorable and small, but the views...huge and beyond incredible! The home is exactly as described, the pictures don’t even do the views justice. • The hosts were very sweet and their market across the street had plenty of options for snacks during our stay. It was a perfect little quaint spot close to the Redwoods -just what we were looking for. My mom is used to staying in more commercial hotels and she enjoyed her stay.

  • Wonderful setting, fabulous facility, warm and inviting host. A perfect experience. I will go back!

    Aaron2019-08-15T00:00:00Z
  • We loved staying at Daryl’s house. After getting groceries I did not leave the property for two whole days. The kitchen had everything I needed to cook any meal. It’s the most updated room in the house. The private pool & hot tub made me feel like a rock star. Loved the tile! When not in the water we spent most of our time on the wonderful upstairs deck. The gardens are so lovely & well maintained. My kids ate strawberries right of the patch. If you have stayed at the Benbow Inn down the road you will have a good idea of what this house looks like, it’s like a mini Benbow. All the historic details are preserved. Glass door knobs, French doors, window shutters, etc. The bedrooms & bathrooms are well separated so everyone had privacy. There is a bathroom off the deck to use while you are in the pool. I really hope we can stay here again!

    Andrea2019-07-22T00:00:00Z
  • This house is amazing and perfect for families!! We had a great time and the host was very nice and responded quickly!! We are definitely coming back soon!!

    Lisa2019-06-30T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely fabulous. What an amazing vacation property with incredible and extensive immaculate gardens. It's like being in a book/movie/fairytale. Hosts are thoughtful, quick to respond and everything is immaculate.

    Chris2019-06-20T00:00:00Z
  • This home is truly a gem. We had a wonderful weekend in the pool, spa, and gardens. The pictures are incredible, but they don’t even do it justice.

    Jeremy2019-06-16T00:00:00Z
  • Daryl and Rob greeted us with warmth and a tour of their magical property. This house that was built the same year as Benbow Inn (1926), brings you back to that place in time (what an amazing house!), but also has all of the modern amenities. There is so much loving care put into all of the parts of the property. A hot day in July had our group spend a whole day in the pool and hot tub area, but you could take a break and wander off into one of the many gardens or a special nook. Tranquility in the perfect rose garden, or fun Game Night in the living room...this was a perfect vacation. Two days after we came back to reality, I told Daryl that we were all still basking in the joy we encountered there. We will return! Thank you! (p.s....ask ahead to have pool/hot tub heated)

    Ruth2019-06-10T00:00:00Z
  • Daryl was wonderful to work with and her home was perfect for friends visiting for my wedding!

    Connor2018-06-10T00:00:00Z
  • My husband and I were looking for a place to stay during the Avenue of the Giants marathon and this beautiful home exceeded all of our expectations! We were traveling with extended family (including kids) and the house easily accommodated our large crew with plenty of space for sleeping and downtime. We never felt cramped or uncomfortable. The home is very well taken care of and full of charming touches that make you feel like you are somewhere in the European countryside. The beds and bedding were high quality and extremely comfortable. Even the linens for the spare futons that the kids used in the office were soft and lovely. The pool and hot tub were clean and easy to heat. The home was wonderful in ever way but I would remiss not to mention the luxurious gardens. The home is surrounded by well manicured gardens which include a rose garden and beautiful landscaping. The added bonus is that the size of the lot affords you complete privacy. The hosts were wonderful and easy to work with and you can tell they take extreme pride in their home and take wonderful care of their guests. Spending time in the CA redwoods is a must do and staying here is a no-brainier!

Cute, well appointed, new Bungalows in the woods on our 200 acre campus.
Nestled at the Heart of the Emerald Triangle, in Wailaki country, in rugged and remote Northern California, Heartwood is a gem of peace and tranquility in a wonderful area of back to the landers and cattle ranchers.
  • Heartwood is a gorgeous place, full of kind people and interesting buildings around every corner. The journey up there is not for the faint of heart, but well worth the hours drive from Garberville. We will be coming back again!

Heartwood is a wilderness retreat destination, learning village and community hub at the heart of the Emerald Triangle in Humboldt County, California. We are open to the public for individual and group retreats, rooms, camping, romantic getaways, and day use at our world class sauna amenities. A seasonal saline pool, and breathtaking straw bale temple are the crown jewels of this lovely and unique property. Off the beaten path, we offer a disconnect from the trappings of 21st century society.
Heartwood has a rich history as a healing center and permaculture and sustainablility design space. There are many natural buildings on the campus showcasing a variety of building techniques. There is extensive edible, drought tolerant, native forward landscaping. The whole place, though newly renovated, oozes history and mystery, and our staff will be happy to tell you stories of Heartwood and the surrounding area.
The Palo Verde subdivision is a 40 acre per parcel rural residential neighborhood, famous for being the Heart of the Emerald Triangle (the place where Trinity, Humboldt, and Mendocino counties meet). It has a rich history of diverse native peoples sharing borders and languages. The Wailaki, Nonlaki, Pomo, Winnema Wintu, and other peoples were scattered around this region in very loose tribal groups. It was "settled" by white men in the 1850s and turned mostly to sheep and cattle ranches, many of which are still working in the surrounding area. An ill-fated plan to build a large dam, and reservoir in the 40s, brought about the building of our lodge, airstrip, and many of our out buildings. The plan was to have a hunting lodge with people flying in from the city for the weekend. In the 70s, the ranch was subdivided and sold to back-to-the-landers, many artists and engineers, who built their simple homesteads here. During that time Heartwood was bought by Bruce and Chela Burger, who founded a massage and energy work school that endured until 2008, teaching many thousands of quality practitioners in both physical manipulation of tissues, and energetic traditions such as Ayurveda, Chinese Medicine, Reiki, etc. The school was closed and extensive renovations done, and a Permaculture Master Plan, developed over the years, was formalized. Heartwood continues this tradition by still teaching permaculture design courses and natural building, but is open to the public for recreation, relaxation, retreat, and renewal. We are happy to host groups or individuals and assist them in disconnecting from the outside world.
  • It was great experience, really feels remote. I would recommend especially for those who wish to escape to a quiet place. We saw families of deer wondering between cabins, heard small animals in leaves, birds. Sometimes even heard the sound of leafs falling from the trees.

Welcome to the Boathouse. We are located in the remote and intimate area of Shelter Cove. Activities abound with fishing, hiking, biking, tidepools, sunsets and more.
The house has two bedrooms upstairs, each with their own full bath. The master bath has a jacuzzi tub. Both bedrooms open up to the upper deck where you can enjoy a nice cup of coffee or a tasty beer from the local brewery, all while enjoying the beautiful ocean views. Downstairs is spacious with plenty of room for relaxing or entertaining. There is a sofa bed as well as a queen-sized trifold mattress, for a total of 8 guests. The kitchen is well equipped, and there is a half bath and laundry off the kitchen. The large downstairs deck adds even more space to enjoy the ocean views. We are a tobacco free home, and would appreciate all other smoking take place outside. We are currently a dog friendly space (no other pets allowed, thanks!). We also only except dogs 50 pounds or less. Please keep dogs off furniture and beds, and please note, there is not an enclosed yard. There is a healthy amount of wildlife in the Cove (skunks, deer, etc.) so it is recommended that you keep your dog on a leash while outside. We also kindly ask that you do not leave your dog alone in the house. Please clean up after your fur baby as we would like to keep good relations with the neighbors. We would appreciate you notifying us at the time of booking if you are bringing a pet as there will be an additional deposit of $50.
The house is located in a quiet and friendly neighborhood, with a green belt in front of the house where there are often families of deer milling about. You can sit on the upper or lower deck and enjoy the ocean views, bird and whale watching, and fresh air of the California coast. We are minutes away from the coffeeshop, restaurants, beaches, walking trails, and most importantly, the Gyppo Ale Mill.

  • We so enjoyed our stay. Loved the personal touches. So great to be in such a relaxing and beautiful environment.

  • Mandi's place was WONDERFUL! The house was comfortable and cozy. The kitchen had all the supplies needed to prepare meals, make coffee and wash up and every bathroom was also well stocked with the needed supplies. Grand view from both bedrooms upstairs ...we saw the waves breaking onto the shore any time we were up there. The living room view was lovely too...so nice to see the ocean from almost all windows in the house as well as from the upstairs and downstairs decks. Speaking of the windows, they let in so much natural light, it was like being outside while inside the house. Mandi was extremely helpful and easy to reach. I would highly recommend this house...great stay! Thank you.

  • The Boathouse is absolutely gorgeous. On a clear day you can see to the horizon of the ocean from both the lower and the upper decks. I heard the seals and the call of the buoy at night. It's just minutes from the Fish Tank Coffee House, Gyppos Brewery, Dalgada's Pizza, and the General Store - which, by the way, is one of the best small grocery stores I've ever shopped in. Mandi is a terrific host and even gave me a pound of Black Thunder coffee to start off my stay. Everything was gorgeous, and having a kitchen full of nice cookware, plates, flatware, and spices was terrific. The beautiful washer and dryer meant I went home with clean clothes. Lots of trails and roads to hike. The beaches are rugged and beautiful. Thanks, Mandi!

Enjoy all the space of the large property as well as a fenced back yard for dogs (complete with a cozy dog house). There is abundant parking for both cars, boats and motorhomes which is a luxury here in Shelter Cove!
Privacy and Space! Over 1 acre of land in the lower Cove. There are no other vacation rentals in the area, with this much space. Parking for a dozen cars, boats and RV's. Looking for Pet friendly? How about a large and fully fenced yard with a doghouse.
  • Celeste's home is a gem. The views from the decks and yard are incredible. Inside, the house is very comfortable. The woodstove gives great heat and ambiance. The kitchen has everything you need to make a great meal. If the beds are too soft, there are harder beds too—Goldilocks would approve. Our pup loved having the fenced in yard to run in. Hikes and the beach are close by. Even the movie selection is spot on! In all, we had a marvelous stay.

  • Celeste’s place is everything we’d expected and more. The photos are just like the property, the home is very comfortable with a relaxing experience for a group of 6. We’ll definitely be staying here again for our next Shelter Cove journey.

  • Celeste's house was amazing. We took a trip here for 4 nights during thanksgiving. Her kitchen had all the tools we need. The house was well equipped with games and amenities. Our dog enjoyed the back yard. The location is great! We highly recommend Celeste's place for a family trip or with friends. P.S. Stop by Shelter Cove general store and get a humboldt sausage. It was the best I've ever tasted.

  • This place is outstanding, amazing area to stay (Avenue of the giants) and the campsite itself has everything you can ask and more, great outside kitchen, awesome outdoor shower, 2 very well kept cabins, though we all slept outside with natural. And great river, even though we can early in the season, for kids it was wonderful, shallow river and you can even get some fishing on. Will definitely want to come back

    Eldar2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • My family loved this camp site! The outdoor kitchen was great! You don't really need to pack much they have so much there for you to use. We will definitely be going again. The dog was sweet. My daughter named him fetch because he/she (not sure) loved playing fetch with her.

    Benedicto2019-08-26T00:00:00Z
  • Marc and Jeanette’s campgrounds are truly perfect if you need fresh air and beautiful surroundings ! The cabins are super cozy and they have games, suggestions for cool places to see and eat at and even provided lanterns in both cabins as well as S’mores for the kids! The play structure was a hit all weekend too. We loved the access to the river especially because it was shallow which was perfect for our little ones ! It rained one day but it didn’t bother us one bit and they even offered us to stay an extra day how cool is that !? We will definetly stay here again !!!

    Max2019-08-11T00:00:00Z
  • We've found our new family home away from home! I love to camp and this place has it all. LITERALLY! It was the perfect place to take the kids. Enjoy nature without waking up 20 times a night wishing I was in a bed. They've thought of everything! It was such a wonderful trip that our plan is to visit every year.

    Sara2019-07-29T00:00:00Z
  • We had our 6 grandkids age 2 to 7 with us plenty of space very private lots of play structures. Well stocked outdoor kitchen with gas stoves, gas barbecue, sink with fresh cold running water, tons of pots, pans utensils everything you need!garden hose, sprinkler for kids, we also had our 2 dogs they loved the freedom, very safe

    Barry2019-07-25T00:00:00Z
  • Ok, this meadow is parked RIGHT off the Avenue of the Giants, right in the heart of the redwoods. It is secluded, gorgeous and right by the Eel River. My dogs, kids and mother all had a wonderful stay here. The sleeping cabins are nice. I had to strive to find any complaint, and that was a tiny bit of dust and cobwebs if that tells you anything. They really took time into making our stay comfortable. They thought of everything! LED battery lanterns, books, games, multiple bug repellents and sunblocks. They even left us a welcome gift of S'mores! The meadow was beautiful and the only real complaint we had was that we made our plans last minute and therefore were unable to stay longer. Can't wait to come visit again! Thanks again!
