Places to stay in Parapara
The Cabin is a brand new unit. It has a self-contained kitchen, separate double bedroom with ensuite, and sea views from the deck. A short walk across the lawn and down the path will get you to beautiful Tukurua beach, with a grassy path down to clean, safe Tukurua beach.
The gardens were first laid out in 1978 with the planting of 1500 rhododendrons, later were added camellias and hostas. The present owners are committed to organic management and have added orchards of fruiting trees, vegetables and herbs with flowering shrubs, native, exotic & subtropical and restored the native bush areas.
The neighbourhood is a quiet private seaside subdivision. The view extends across the whole bay from Farewell Spit to Abel Tasman.
  • Simply amazing place, I found everything I needed, the beach is stunningly beautiful and I loved walking around barefoot. The manager and owners are super welcoming and kind and really took care of me in every possible way. I hope to be back in an easier time!

  • The cabin was great and the other units looked just as good. Well outfitted. The location was perfect - isolated and private yet only 20 km to groceries and 2 km from The Mussel Bay Inn. We will be back next year. DJ - Kelowna, Canada

  • I’ve been staying at Jane’s place for two nights. I should have booked more. The place was the most comfortable, relaxing and heavenish plce I’ve stayed at. The inner yard, just 5 meters to the beach, I had a blast. Even though it was grey, I’ve had the time of my life, having tea in the mornings by the beach. Jane has been the sweetest and kindest host. Communicative and very helpful. She made me feel home, not only the place with extra entrance, but also her very kind way. Very cheerful and contagious. I’d highly recommend that place to everybody. For peace of mind, travel to another dimension. Having jo WiFi was a great gift. The mussels inn is super close with amazing food, very connecting people and WiFi when needed. The location is optimal to get everywhere. Thank you a ton Jane and Brian! It’s been the greatest pleasure 😊🙃

  • Jane and her husband are a delightful couple. Very helpful with their local knowledge and super friendly. The studio is super comfy with everything you would ever need or want. The beach is right at your doorstop. A great place to stay when starting the Heaphy track walk from brown hut. Make sure you visit the Mussel Inn for a bite to eat. The mussels are fabulous. Would definitely stay at janes place again if out that way. Thank you Jane 💕

  • Very good little sleeping location, with all the simple things - toilet, shower, and a nice breakfast provided. Easy walk through the front gate directly onto the beach - good swimming high or low tide, we sat out on the beach late watching the stars (and Elon Musk space satellites) - it was all very magical. Easy access to Wharariki Beach, Farewell Spit, The Mussel Inn, Takaka township (for coffee, restaurants, and supermarkets). Its all about the location and this ticks all the boxes.

  • We had a lovely stay and enjoyed the space, it's a beautiful cabin in lovely bush, though relatively close to other properties it felt secluded and private the whole time. And the cat was a good time.

  • We loved our stay at this beautiful and secluded cottage. It's not fancy, so if you want plush living conditions it may not be the place for you. But if you enjoy simple rustic living as we do, you will love it. What a great escape from city living! The outdoor bath/shower was a real highlight.

The apartment is very well appointed.
In addition to the beaches and swimming spots described above, the little further afield but within 5-10 minute drive are: * Collingwood village with eel feeding ponds, cafes, art, museums etc; * Iconic Mussel Inn for great local beer and musical events; * Godwits' breeding ground for birdwatchers. * The Aorere Goldfields Cycling Track
  • Fantastic location, in the middle of nature, magnificent sunrises and super friendly hosts. Everything is there in terms of equipment.

  • Robins place was wonderful. It was quiet and the scenery was amazing. The place was clean and the hosts were really lovely. A perfect place to stay. We had a great time.

    Sabrina2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • We found a lovely welcome sign with my name at the begging of the driveway when we arrived at the address. The host is kind and informative. We had a chance to explore their veggie/fruits garden. The view from the bedrooms are outstanding. Recommend!!

    Akiko2020-02-27T00:00:00Z
  • What an amazing place to stay. Robin and her husband are such amazing hosts and I felt honoured to have been allowed to stay in their beautiful home. They were so helpful and obliging - lovely couple! The home had everything that I needed and was close to all sights, sounds and stunning scenery. I would highly recommend this Airbnb and the fabulous hosts.

    Lynn2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • If there’s one place you should stay on the magnificent South Island then it surely has to be Robin’s and Paul’s place. We’ve had the best of times. There’s the breathtaking view on the veranda – peeking through the lush forest to see Golden Bay ablaze in the morning sun is just stunning. There’s the sprawling garden with its countless varieties of delicious crops. There’s Wharariki Beach just a stone’s throw (or a half hour drive) away. But the best thing is: There’s Paul and Robin. They got out of their way to make our stay the bestest holiday ever. They took us and our children on a tour around their estate (not minding that our kids didn’t understand any English), provided excellent directions, and even made some play-doh on a rainy afternoon. Thank you so much for everything!

    Roland2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • If you're looking for a fancy place, look further, this is not it. BUT! You cannot imagine tranquility of this place. The house is settled in huge yard, surrounded by trees and cute garden, without any neighbors but the birds. Hosts are living upstairs, and the complete place below is at your disposal. There is a proper kitchen and we cooked our meals without any issue, there is a huge fridge with a freezer too. Hosts left many maps and advises about surrounding walks. Patio in front is perfectly decorated and inviting for a first morning coffee or a glass of wine in the evening. We didn't have chance to meet Robin, but Paul was very helpful. We only wished we could stay more than one night as the location seemed perfect for exploring the whole Golden Bay.

The Apartment is set on a 10 acre tranquil bush property with a running stream and plenty of birdlife. There are many beautiful beaches close by and only a five minute walk to Tukurua Beach. I am situated 1 km from the Mussell Inn, 13 ks from Collingwood and 16 ks from Takaka. Golden Bay offers magical places to explore such as Wharareki Beach, Pupu Springs , Heaphy Track and Abel Tasman.

A quiet and private flat just 3 metres from the beach. It is a downstairs flat with a private entrance. The owner and two elderly Jack Russell's quietly occupy the upstairs but you have the flat to yourselves. You have a full kitchen with dishwasher, small lounge with free view a king size bed with ensuite and a double bed with ensuite. A relaxed and comfortable way to enjoy the beach and the bay.
Sun poors into lounge, lie on the bed and enjoy the sound of the ocean its shabby sheek! homely and comfortable. cleaned and managed by professionals.
10 minutes to food either way!
  • Wonderful and unique location at the beach. However, the accommodation is stuffed with worn-out furniture; when you close the windows there is a very musty smell ; all kitchen crockery and utensils had it be cleaned before we could use them; we vacuumed for 45 min to get rid of the spiders, cobwebs, sand and dead bugs; we aired the sheets to get rid of the sand and fluff. TV is hardly working. Kyra is very friendly and she did ask if everything was in order but where to start? We clearly have different ideas of how clean and tidy a place should be. We decided to not enter into a discussion and enjoy our stay. Which we did.

    Gabrielle2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • A nice comfortable homely place with excellent access to the beach.

    Patric2019-02-21T00:00:00Z
  • Location! Location! Location ! Kyra’s place was perfect for a beach getaway, if you’re expecting 5 star hotel accomodation, then this is not the place for you. However if you’re looking for a cosy beachside holiday, with very friendly countryside hospitality, this is the place.

The house has 3 bedrooms, two of them with ocean views and direct access to the deck. The third bedroom is a bunk room with 4 full sized single beds. The house also features 2 modern bathrooms, a warm outdoor shower, a small TV room and a great kitchen. It is furnished to a high standard, fully insulated, double glazed and has a wood burner for colder days. Have breakfast on the deck, eat dinner on the big oak table, or just sit on the window seat and enjoy the view.
Parapara is a safe swimming beach. Go swimming, kayaking or go for a walk in nearby Milnthorpe park. It is also only a short drive to Collingwood and the Aorere Valley. Or head to the Mussel Inn for great food and music. Explore beautiful Golden Bay, with its great scenery, walks, cafes and artists and relax in the Beach house and at the beach right in front of you.
  • My wife and I visited NZ for the second time to celebrate our anniversary. I was thrilled when I stumbled onto this Golden Bay beach house, that looked gorgeous and in exactly the location I wanted to be... and over-the-top excited when I saw that Mascha owned this house. We had stayed in her Hop Kiln house (Upper Moutere) our first trip and loved it. The location in Golden Bay is wonderful and the house sits right on the amazing beach. We had so much fun exploring the tidal pools and mussel beds at low tide. The house is wonderfully appointed and we really didn’t come across anything we thought was missing. Just book it. You won’t be sorry.

    Todd2020-02-14T00:00:00Z
  • This is far and away the best place we've ever stayed in, anywhere in the world, and I am great at finding great places to stay. As an Airbnb Super Host myself for eight rentals in Moab Utah, I know when I find a gem, and this is our second stay at Masha's Beach House. Everything was perfect for our two couples and the two boys, the kayaks and a Golden Bay almost entirely to ourselves,.. we will be back again and again!

    Rob2019-12-08T00:00:00Z
  • An outstanding location and a well designed house perfect for friends or families. It was exceptionally well equipped for beach activities but also indoor games for kids and the kitchen had everything and more that you might need. The book selection was also good and has something for everyone.

    Taryn2019-11-05T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely stunning place to stay. Beautiful views of the sea and beach and kayaks on the doorstep. Very stylishly equipped house. So relaxing to stay with the sound of the sea sending us to sleep

    Tim2019-10-17T00:00:00Z
  • Everything about this Golden Bay beach house was perfect. It was as sparkling clean and nicely appointed as if it had just been built and opened for us alone. So many aspects of this house and furnishings were top shelf. There was everything we could hope for in a vacation rental. The architectural design and layout were inspired. The place is perfect for two young families to share. A bedroom and bathroom on either end of the great room for each couple, and a kids room with the best constructed set of bunk beds I have ever seen, to sleep four kids (of any age), right next to the cozy TV room behind the kitchen with a wonderful selection of DVDs,.. and a laundry room / mud room with the back door entrance to the house for everyone to come in from the beach. The great room with large windows to view the ocean and beach just 15 meters from the house, sunrises to rival any anywhere. That wonderful great room with sofa chairs in front of a cozy fireplace, and a huge table that seats everyone with a well appointed kitchen with all the amenities of a modern household, spotlessly maintained. A marvelous deck and front entrance from which to walk barefoot out to the beach. And if that wasn't enough,.. on the rainy day we spend much of the day indoors, we discovered the ping pong table and foosball game table in the garage/basement to while away the hours. I cannot say enough about the meticulous thought that went into this exceptional vacation rental property and home away from home. And of course, the location to rival any on the planet. I am an Airbnb Super Host ten times over in Moab, Utah for our own rental property and our friends, have used Airbnb as guests ourselves for many years, and have never stayed in a better Airbnb property. Thank you Mascha, for your hospitality, and for the extra attention I am certain you would have provided had there been anything at all we might have needed,.. though there was never a need to contact you. We will be coming back again and again in future, and can't thank you enough.

    Rob2019-08-04T00:00:00Z
  • This place is absolutely stunning! It is absolute beachfront on a very quiet sandy lane. The sunrises are to die for...we took so many photos. The Bach itself is very contemporary with lovely tasteful decor. It has everything you need to kick back and relax or go for a kayak on the bay which is very safe. Mascha’s place is everything and more, would highly recommend, we would love the opportunity to return in summer.

    Sharon2019-07-12T00:00:00Z
  • Mascha‘s place is probably the best we have ever stayed at. After our first day, we knew that we would have to come back and just booked the place for another 4 nights on our way back. It felt like coming home. The house is very tidy and very well equipped with everything you need. The view is stunning and sitting on the wooden deck just beside the beach was gorgeous. Mascha was a great, very attentive host and even brought some german books for our children. We can only recommend Mascha‘s place, it‘s wonderful.

    Stephan2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • Jocelyn's place was so beautiful and exactly what we were looking for in a retreat away from a big city. Would recommend if wanting to stay in nature surrounded by beautiful mountains, streams and native birds. We found it a great jump off spot for sea kayaking in Abel Tasman park.

    Kerri2020-03-12T00:00:00Z
  • This place is the best. Gorgeous inside and out. I loved having the private patio with BBQ grill, garage, tub with shower over, and a little window in the shower to bring that extra bit of refreshment. Press pot with good coffee supplied- heaven. Nice tea variety too. Oh and the fresh milk in the fridge- so nice. Huge bed, lots of pillows, lovely view on the patio, heater for the cool mornings, all made it so I did not want to leave. Fortunately had 2 nights here and highly recommend. Location is very good, between Collingwood and Takaka, with lots to do and see in the area. Hosts are fantastic.

    Margaret2020-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • One of the better places we got to stay during our trip. Jocelyn and her husband were so nice and even took us on a trip around their amazing property. Definitely recommended!

    Adi2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful laid back surroundings. Great central location to explore Golden Bay. Wildlife comes to visit you ( Resident Wekas)

    Robert2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • A great spot for exploring Golden Bay. Nice and close to the Mussel Inn and Pupu Springs. Easy to get to Farewell Spit or go in the opposite direction towards Wainui Falls. A comfortable space with lovely little touches - fresh flowers, strawberries, milk, muesli, bread and spreads. Mesmerising art work on the walls. Loved our short stay. We were warmly welcomed and felt at home straight away!!

Located on the grounds of the old Pakawau school which has been turned into the popular Old School Cafe, Restaurant and Bar. A 200m walk to the beautiful Pakawau beach and only 12kms from Collingwood. Farewell Spit is only another 12kms with the tour buses passing right by. Turn off to Whanganui inlet is just 2kms away. Tennis court available and the Pakawau shop across the road.
  • Lovely clean little cabin with a comfortable bed. Added bonus of a fridge and a TV. In a great location for exploring and the cafe had a great atmosphere on the Saturday evening I stayed with lots of locals chatting. Robbie was a great host and gave me some god tips.

    Michelle2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • A great place to stay at the end of New Zealand. A comfortable cabin with comfy bed, fridge to store food, coffee and tea and tv. All this at the doorstep to nature, beach and beautiful Farewell Spit. And at the end of the day a cold beer and meal at the only cafe around. Robbie is a great host and we would definitely go back.

    Annelies2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • Clean cabin with decent fridge, toaster, hot water jug and TV. Queen bed is good. WiFi of reasonable speed for a camping ground. Ammenities are not personal but shared with restaurant, but clean and water didn't change temperature if you shower late evening or early morning. Hospitality very good and the cafe food is fresh simple pub type food presented nicely. I know that every bed these days has sheets and a duvet. This looks good and stylish but a sheet is not warm enough but adding a duvet is way too hot. Fortunately I am wise to this issue and take a light microfibre blanket and this is a necessary intermediary for many people like me. Make such a blanket available and the cabin is perfect. Cheers and Thanks!

  • We had such a wonderful stay at the School House Cabin! It was really well set up and tidy. We loved the location because we could get to see so much around Golden Bay. We will definitely be back again one day soon!

  • I had the most amazing stay here. The room was perfect for a quiet getaway and a perfect location for all the sightseeing I wanted to do 😊

    Kiri2020-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • Great wee spot to holiday. Perfect location just across from the beach. The cafe itself had excellent with good value food (I recommend the chicken and cranberry pizza) and Robbie was a friendly and knowledgeable host.

    Donna2020-01-13T00:00:00Z
  • I really enjoyed my stay in the Old School Cafe Cabin and I felt very comfortable. Would have loved to stay longer. The Cabin is totally cute and very clean and Robbie is a great host. I would definitely recommend it!

  • Super nice little cabin in a beautiful location. The beach is only 100m away and it is only a short drive to farewell spit and some great hikes. The old school cafe also has a nice ambiance and good food.

The Chalet is fully self-contained with a large separate bedroom and a romantic log stove for chilly evenings. It has a sunny deck at the front and a short stroll across the lawn and down the path leads you to the safe and beautiful Tukurua beach.
The gardens were first laid out in 1978 with the planting of 1500 rhododendrons, later were added camellias and hostas. The present owners are committed to organic management and have added orchards of fruiting trees, vegetables and herbs with flowering shrubs, native exotic & subtropical and restored the native bush areas.
  • The Golden Bay Lodge and Garden is a great base to get to see all the unique natural features of the region. Stop at the "i" site at Takaka for all National Park and local attraction information to plan your daily activities. Takaka is 15km and Collingwood 10km away for all self catering supplies. We recommend the "Mussel Inn" for great food and live entertainment.

    Alan2020-03-12T00:00:00Z

    Matt2020-02-20T00:00:00Z

Our unique Flax Pod cabin is a repurposed shipping container with cool views of Golden Bay. It suits a couple, has a queen bed, sofa and basic kitchen facilities. Bifolding doors open onto a deck where you can totally relax, enjoy a cold beer and soak up the sea views. Its in a great location and a great base to explore Golden Bay from. Enjoy getting back to the basics, dozing in a hammock, a friendly weka or two and a spectacular night sky.
The Flax Pod cabin is a converted shipping container and although pretty basic and very diy, it is warm, comfortable and in a cool location. Its a bit like glamping with its basic kitchen facilities, hot outdoor shower and composting toilet. The kitchen has a fridge, toaster, jug, double stove top, pots and pans, crockery and cutlery - you should find everything you need. There is no microwave or oven. The views from the Flax Pod are pretty awesome. You can see over the ocean out towards Farewell Spit and into the western ranges. It is on a newly purchased property which we are regenerating back into native bush. We are still in the early stages of landscaping. It is usually quiet and peaceful, although we do have kids being kids. You are free to wonder down to the stream area where the native trees are restoring and where, along the stream edge, you can see glow worms at night. We also have a caravan to rent and space for 4 campervans to park down by the stream. Our family home is close by but you have your own space and we won't disturb you. If you fancy an evening sitting around our wee fire pit and gazing at the stars while toasting marshmallows, bring some small firewood or grab an armload of drift wood from the local beach. We supply wood to start you off. BBQ available on request.
Quiet neighbourhood shared with local people and local wildlife. It has stunning views in every direction and the valley is clad in trees. A very special place with lots of birds such as kereru, weka, kea, tui, bellbird.
  • Kim is a great host, her shipping container is a fantastic place from which to discover the delights of Golden Bay. The location is tranquil with a perfect view of the whole bay, sunsets and the night sky.

    Alice2020-03-17T00:00:00Z
  • it was the best airbnb we stayed in so far. :) Very tidy, cosy and such a nice view, especially the sunset.

    Jana2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • We loved the heart and soul of the flax pod! It was a comfy place to rest for a night and just a short drive after finishing the Abel Tasman Track. PERFECT views of Golden Bay at sunset.

    Hayley2020-03-06T00:00:00Z
  • We had an awesome time in this "container". I would totally recommend to stay there for a few days. We had the most beautiful sunsets and stunning views. The hosts are lovely and very helpful.

The simple and homely atmosphere made extra special by Kevin's expert local knowledge and advice. I so enjoyed spending time here and would love to return.

  • Very cozy home and amazing local tips from Kevin ans Elda. Would love to stay again

    Krunal2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • Kevin and Elda are great and knowledgeable hosts that know the ins and outs of the area. Kevin's energetic approach to welcoming us to the area really helped set the pace for our Golden Bay adventure. The space is comfortable, tidy and well maintained. All around great value and I highly recommend staying here if you ever get the chance.

    Nicolas2020-02-07T00:00:00Z
  • Kevin was very warm and welcoming. He took the trouble to show us around and was good to talk to. Kevin also showed us some lovely walks to do and gave us freshly picked fruit from his trees. They are generous and trusting hosts with excellent communications. The room was clean and charming. A big comfy bed and en suite shower / toilet. The room is off a shared space where you can cook and eat, and there are some more bunks in there where you might meet other travellers staying, or your extended party could sleep, plenty of space (by arrangement with Kevin of course). It is a big eccentric space with art and books and WiFi available. The location is great for easy reach to amazing walks. We really loved our two night there and made lasting friends.

Situated a short drive from Takaka, tucked away in a huge back garden, is a private, cosy, warm and self-contained yurt with lovely mountain and garden views. The yurt is surrounded by fruit trees and veggie beds, which guests are welcome to use. The Garden Yurt is an ideal place to use as a base to unwind, switch off and recharge while on your travels or on holiday. A quiet weekend get away to Golden Bay is complete with a quiet, central and private base. Who doesn't want to sleep in a yurt?!
The yurt has solid wooden floors, is light and warm, has a kitchenette with oven, gas hob, coffee and tea making facilities, and a good range of pots, pans, cutlery and plates etc. It has a fire, is insulated and ventilated. Yurt living is relatively simple but highly functional and convenient, helped along by solar power. The composting toilet and outdoor shower are basic, yet well functioning and easy to use, and are right next to the yurt for your convenience. Children are more than welcome for a small added cost. The yurt has a double bed and if children are coming, a single mattress and/or portacot available on request. All bedding provided. For those of you looking for a glamping luxury retreat - while this is clean, tidy, water tight, has power and is warm, it also has a rustic charm! Please be prepared for the 'nuances' of yurt life. You do need to read the instructions for the various 'functions' carefully, and just ask us if you need a hand! From time to time things will be temperamental, however we are here to help and happy to do so! Children do live on the property :) Small fridge available in the yurt, and a separate fridge and washing machine available at the house for you to utilise if needed. If you are looking for a private, spacious, clean, tidy, well looked after, dry, cosy and comfortable retreat after an adventure or two in the great outdoors of Mohua, Golden Bay, look no further.
Golden Bay/Mohua is renowned for it's beautiful beaches, rivers, mountains and national parks. We are a 2 minute drive from some of the best coffee and kai in NZ, and rivers are also 2 mins away.

Right on the beach (5m at high tide) and a long flat perfect stretch of golden sand on the doorsteps. We were so happy to have stumbled across this gem!! • Great location, a lovely spot and a wonderful host

    Kevin2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • Stunning place to stay !!! The cottage was clean and the heater did its job at night. No mosquitoes which was a surprise given the bush and beach environment. Steve is a lovely person to chat to and provided us with all the local information we needed. Amazing guy with his amazing place. Would definitely visit for a week atleast next time. 2 nights is not sufficient at all.

  • Fantastic location & pet friendly, would definitely stay again

    Karen2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Great place to stay. Everything is included in the stay and although it is not the most luxurious stay, it is just wonderful. Clean and Steve is a great guy. Pohara was also exactly on the right side of the abel tasman track for us. Nice and quiet.

    Arjen2020-02-27T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay at Steve’s place in Pohara. The accommodation was in a beautiful peaceful location, close to Pohara beach.

    Sarah2020-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • Steve’s place is great. Cottages spread out across a wide area, surrounded in trees and all beach facing. Birdsong in the mornings and evenings and a few dragonflies flitting around made this place very special. It is about a 5 minute walk to get down to Pohara beach. Great spots for jogging or cycling. We stayed with a baby who loved crawling around relaxing, and we loved the patio on our cottage for a few wines and dinner once she was asleep. Steve’s place is perfect for those wanting to stay close to the beach, yet not on it, and for those wanting a true kiwi-cabin experience. We loved it and only wished we had longer. Thanks Steve, we’ll be back!

    Nicky2020-01-10T00:00:00Z
  • The Sandcastle is a cracking little Bach style getaway, whether there for 1 night or 10. Tranquil bush like surroundings with plenty of wildlife. The gardens are peaceful with the communal area/pizza oven a great place to sit and meet the other guests, with a beer or wine and enjoy a pizza. This place really is a perfect little getaway. Steve the host is so easy going, a lovely guy to sit and have a yarn with. So passionate about his place and it’s surroundings, so helpful and always on hand to offer tips and advice on the local area. He seems to thrive from meeting new people and nothing is to much trouble. Respect the place, it’s surroundings and the other guests and I’m sure Steve would stop at nothing to add to the pleasure of your stay. I found our cottage to be clean, comfortable and had all of the amenities you would need whilst on a break. I did notice on reading the reviews, that some people were dis-satisfied with the condition of the cottages. I have to stress that this place is a “Bach” style accommodation, as such you will see the odd cobweb and a couple of dead flies, but it is clear that Steve makes a good effort to keep the place clean. The beds in our cottage were both comfortable and the bedding was clean, clean towels were provided and the small kitchen had everything that we needed. If your expecting a 5 star hotel with room service and pristine conditions don’t bother. If you love the outdoors, kiwi style Bach accommodation, peace, tranquility, enjoy meeting lovely people and love Golden Bay, this is the place for you. If you fancy the pizza oven fired up, I’d recommend you give Steve notice before you get there, bring along your toppings and Steve does the rest for you. I’m not a huge pizza fan, but this is an experience I would thoroughly recommend. I will definitely return here with my family The first opportunity we have. We have family in Golden Bay and always somewhere to stay, but this is a place not to be missed. We had a family member with us from the UK, who might I add is more of a city hotel type. He loved his time here, at one with nature, surrounded by lovely folk. Thank you Steve, our time with you was great, way better than expected. We look forward to returning. Kris, Nelson.

    Kris2020-01-07T00:00:00Z
  • Throughly enjoyed our stay at Sandcastle! Steve was very hospitable and along with the cute cottage being so close to Pohara beach he offered to cook us pizzas for dinner. Which was lovely! Highly recommend and will be back.

Romantic Getaway. Seeing it is loving it! The Caboose is a handcrafted replica of an old train carriage, with a private garden. Set on a property with a historic farmhouse, only 5 minutes drive from the beach and Takaka township. Great for both summer and winter with a pot belly making it cosy on the colder nights and an outside bath for a romantic soak under the stars. Your stay at the The Caboose in Golden Bay will hopefully be a special experience that you will remember! Close to Takaka and close to the beaches, so perfect as a base for your holiday or as your base to explore the natural wonders Golden Bay has to offer. Or just stay in The Caboose and ... relax! We do not offer Wifi or television, hoping you will be able to get away from it all, but there are plenty of books and magazines to keep you occupied and a few games. And just to let you know ... we have children, so you might hear or see the odd child in the garden, but they will respect your privacy and the fact that you are on holiday and want to relax. Some of the feedback we were given: - Made to feel very welcome. Easy to relax inside and outside the Caboose. Really enjoyed exploring Golden Bay. Nice combination of Art Trail, natural beauty and good food - Great location and excellent accommodation. The Caboose was beautifully presented and had everything we needed. The perfect place to relax - Great spot for a get away and top location to base ourselves from to explore golden bay and up to farewell spit! Really nice place to stay and the outside bath, shower, hammock and dining area was ideal and made it even more special for us! - Thanks so much for the relaxing refuge. Beautifully quiet, would recommend to anyone who needs some time out - The outside bath is awesome. We'll be back :) Truly one of the best accommodations my wife and I have ever spent time in - after 40 years of traveling. A small space but absolutely magical and meticulously detailed. A true labour of love created by someone with a genius level of originality and inspiration. This little wonder is dripping with soul. After leaving and checking into our next night's accommodation after leaving Takaka, we felt an overwhelming sense of loss - realizing our one night stay there hadn't been nearly long enough. - A very unique, relaxing and private get-away! We loved staying in the Caboose with our 2 year old daughter and will happily recommend it to others. The private backyard with outdoor bath and shower were a highlight, and the welcoming eggs and beer a lovely touch. Thank you, I'm sure we will be back!
Rural outlook over farmlands but close to beach and lots to explore. Golden Bay is New Zealand's most diverse and appealing holiday destination. Imagine a region with endless variety, where golden beaches, alpine valleys and tranquil fishing rivers share a close proximity with the sea. Breathtaking scenery, arts and crafts, sporting activities. There's something for everyone. Golden Bay is nestled into the South Island's north-west corner. A chain of steep and rugged mountains cuts its fertile river plains and valleys from the rest of the island.
  • Had a lovely getaway at the caboose. Great location and really nice place to stay. Has everything you need. Highly recommend

  • One of the best places we’ve ever stayed! Highly recommended for a relaxing quirky stay. The outdoor shower and bath are amazing and the cabin is clean, nice and cozy - it has everything you need. Also great location to explore Golden Bay Area.

    Stephanie2020-03-18T00:00:00Z
  • One of the nicest places I've ever stayed. Such a sweet space with everythingyou need and so cosy. The out door amenities were just great. How can you not love a night bath beneath the stars! Want to go back!

    Bryony2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • The Caboose was refreshingly different from anything we have experienced in NZ so far. Feeling of remoteness but close to local amenities and laces to visit. So much to see - we only touched the surface. Hosts were attentive but did not invade your privacy. Eggs and beer were a nice and thoughtful touch. Would highly recommend for a get away from it all experience.

    Lynn2020-03-06T00:00:00Z
  • The caboose was a lovely spot from which to explore Golden Bay! The listing was very accurate. It’s a peaceful, cozy place with very welcoming hosts.

    Lynnie2020-03-04T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely stay in the Caboose. It’s as cute and cozy as it looks in the photos, but also had all of the amenities we’ve found in much larger apartments/spaces (we cooked a full dinner and breakfast).

    Brittany2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • My husband and I had a wonderful stay at the caboose! It was such a unique, quirky spot but felt so cozy, secluded yet close to town. We would totally stay here again, cheers and thank you Peter & Lisa!

  • Fantastic place to stay with amazing beach access! The house was very clean and welcoming! Gabriele was very responsive to messages and a very helpful host! Highly recommend!

    Joana2020-03-22T00:00:00Z
  • We can only highly recommend staying at Gabrieles place. The beach is a stone throw away, all the other famous golden bay sights easy and quick reachable via car. Gabriele was very helpful with local insights and we wished to have stayed longer. Oh and use the nice wooden platform terrace on the grass - you' ll feel realy relaxed.

    Norbert Daniel2020-03-18T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed our stay here, the apartment was just the right size for the 4 of us (2 adults, 2 boys aged 2 & 5). It was clean and the amenities suited us. We loved being close to the beach for an after dinner stroll to. Gabriele is a lovely host as well, very helpful and friendly!

    Julia2020-01-10T00:00:00Z
  • Awesome place, super host! Perfect spot for discovering all Golden Bay. Super quiet, super well located, close to the beach. Gabriele is very friendly and welcoming. We definitely recommend this place !

    Anne-Sophie2019-12-09T00:00:00Z
  • Tidy accommodation close to a beautiful beach. Suitable for 2 people, or a small family. The second bedroom was a bit smaller than expected, but Gabriele gave us linen to use the sofa bed instead. The kitchen / kitchenette space is minimal with a little fridge and two burners only (no oven), we arrived with chicken hoping to cook a roast - luckily Gabriele gave us a slow cooker to use. Despite this I would still recommend this stay. 😊

    Bessie2019-10-04T00:00:00Z
  • Gabriele’S place was in a lovely location and great for exploring farewell spit and national parks in that area. The accomodation was very clean , comfortable and had everything we needed for our stay. Gabriele was very friendly and helpful with local knowledge of the area

  • What a treat! Gabriele is such a lovely person and a great host, the unit was perfect for what we needed, and so clean! Patons Rock was is the perfect location, great center point for seeing what the Bay has to offer. We really enjoyed our stay, only wished it was longer.

    Sam2019-04-24T00:00:00Z
  • The thoughtful personal touches fresh flowers, supplies were delightful. The rooms were spotless clean and well equipped. The location close to the beach was very romantic and well placed for Cape Farewell. Sad we couldn't stay longer than our two days.

Named after my Gypsy hearted grandmother, Alma May, is a glorious retro caravan (although she’s quite modest about it all). She’s cheap n cheerful and packed with quirks and charm. She’s a lover of nature and the outdoors which fortunately fits with her alfresco shower and earthy compost mushroom shaped toilet. Alma May loved having visitors to host and create stories and adventure with. Priced at half the cost of a camp site in Pohara, she’s a right bargain.

  • The view is magnificent; easily the best in all the homes that I’d stayed in while in NZ. On a clear night (which I had), the view of the stars in the night sky was amazing and I would certainly look up their place when I’m back in NZ again

    Ben2020-03-16T00:00:00Z
  • Gorgeous experience! Conny and Gert are like the early settlers! They own a wonderful hill and work very hard to transform this place into a nice place to live. The house lays higher then everyone else, so you can enjoy an Incredible panoramic view, right from your bed! Aside from the the view, which alone is absolutely worth it, the stay was very convenient with breakfast included, washing machine, lots if space and lots of Tipps what to do. The location is not far from a couple of restaurants, a supermarket and Golden Bay Kayaks, where you can have great kayak tours. Connie is a lovely host, who gave us a warm welcome, nice chats, she always had time for us, but respected our privacy. You can listen to very interesting stories while enjoying the sunset. We totally recommend this place!

The garden where we enjoyed late afternoon sun is delightful. We highly recommend this AirBNB to anyone travelling in the area. Stay as long as you can, we're only disappointed we had to leave after one night. Will definitely return for longer next time.

**Due to the Covid 19 situation we will not be take any further bookings until the levels & conditions become clearer. Thanks for understanding This is the place to stay if you want a true kiwi bach experience. The bach is in a perfect location to get to the best parts of Golden Bay. Sunny & warm, it is perfect for visits all year round. A perfect place to relax or as an adventure base- only a 2 min walk away from a beautiful tidal beach. Pātiki: Flounder or flat
This is a historical and cozy bach has a rural outlook and is just a short stroll (2 mins)to the beach. A character bach that started life as a Mill worker’s hut, it has since been a holiday park cabin and home. It is now enjoyed as a holiday house, and is well equipped for your stay. Sunny & warm the bach is perfect for visits all year round. There is a new log burner with plenty of wood making it very cosy in winter. There is lots of outdoor furniture, board games, books, TV and DVD player, BBQ, and the kitchen is very well equipped. Pets are welcome and encouraged! The section is fully fenced. We just ask that you clean up after them & not let them on the furniture. Currently the bach can sleep 4-5 people comfortably (1 x Queen bed, 1 x double bed/with single bunk on top). We ask guests to bring their own sheets & pillowcases when possible. Guests are expected to clean & tidy the space on leaving- leaving it as it was found. We do not charge a cleaning fee.
The bach is a perfect location to get to the best parts of Golden Bay: Wharariki, Farewell Spit, Whanganui Inlet & Kaihoka lakes. There are many great walks and beaches nearby, good swimming spots at Pakawau Beach, along with abundant birdlife. The bach is also in the heart of Kingfish country - an incredible flats fishing experience and now an international fly fishing destination. The closest township of Collingwood is 10 minutes drive away, there is a friendly shop nearby at Pakawau campground which has a reasonable selection of food & beverages. The closest eating establishments are at the Farewell spit cafe (amazing views) & The Old school cafe. The legendary Mussel inn is approximately a 20 minute drive away.
  • Great little spot, perfect for a weekend getaway.

  • Emma and Jacob's bach is awesome! 2 min walk down to the bach and the history within the bach and the surrounding area was really interesting to read up on! I also enjoyed bringing my doggo with me and having the security of knowing that one you could bring your dog and two the area was fully fenced. Bed was super comfy as well! 10/10 would recommend for the typical kiwi bach life experience : ) thanks again!

  • We enjoyed staying there. Arrived on a very rainy and cold evening and sitting by the fireplace was just perfect. The place is well equipped and quiet. Would definitely recommend!

The Bach is fully self-contained, modern, and comfortable, with a romantic log burner for those chilly evenings. A short stroll across the lawn brings you to a cliff top overlooking beautiful Golden Bay, with a grassy path down to clean, safe Tukurua beach.
  • Amazing find! Great location, beautiful gardens, comfortable accommodation! Highly recommend!!!

  • Beautiful accommodation in a lovely location with large gardens to walk through and only 2 minutes walk to a secluded beach (down a slope so may be an issue for anyone with mobility issues). 5 minute drive to the famous mussel in and although we didnt use it, a large hot tub is available for use in a private area with view over the sea. Would definitely recommend if staying in the golden bay area.

  • We stayed at Henry’s place over two nights for a friends wedding in Takaka. Such a beautiful spot! Henry made it easy for us to access and everything we needed for weekend was there. Many thanks, would stay again if Takaka was a destination of travel.

  • Really the best location for when you are visiting Golden Bay, central so you can travel to Wharariki Beach / Farewell Spit - all the way across to Totaranui / Wainui. Nice to have a normal kitchen so meal prep is easy. Make time to spend relaxing on and about the massive section too - there is plenty of fruit and vege available. The sea kayaks are fun to use - especially early in the morning when the sea is calm and flat.

  • Fabulous hideaway. Stunning views. Spotlessly tidy and very comfortable. We were surprised to find The Bach was part of the Golden Bay Lodge so there are other people around now and again, though we found it very peaceful and quite private.

  • Beautiful setting spotless loved the garden easy access to the beach

  • Perfect spot for a summer getaway. We had three wonderful and sunny days at the bach. It’s simple yet wonderful. The best part is the spacious garden and the easy access to a beach that feels very private. Definitely suggest staying here at least a couple of nights. The only downside was that we had some issues with the wifi.
