Places to stay in Dornoch
A pleasant room and a help-yourself breakfast in our family home in a lovely setting next to a working water mill in the coastal village of Golspie.
We have a room available on a hostel-style basis in our friendly Scottish / Kiwi home. The Mill House is right on the edge of the village of Golspie in the Highlands of Scotland, only 150 metres from the main road (A9), but in a very tranquil and beautiful spot. The room has a comfortable double bed and plenty of storage. There's a shared bathroom and a comfortable family sitting room with a log burner. It's a family home, pleasant but not fancy, indeed a bit scruffy in places. We have two very small children who are generally pretty well-behaved but they do scatter toys round the place and might break into song over breakfast. There's plenty of space for storing bikes and drying boots and waterproofs. The house is in a lovely setting, next to a working water mill, built in the 1860's, which we run (find Golspie Mill online to find out more ). We invite you to help yourself to breakfast - we offer Golspie Mill porridge, cereal, homemade bread when time permits, fruit, yogurt, tea, coffee etc or if you prefer you're welcome to use the kitchen to cook your own breakfast. We're also happy to point you in the direction of nice places to eat out locally.
Golspie is a small coastal village, between the sea and the hills. It's an hours drive from Inverness and an hours drive from the spectacular north coast. The area is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, with great cycling on quiet roads, an excellent mountain bike track, lovely walks along the shore and through the woods. The popular Lands End - John o Groats cycle route passes the top of the road (150 metres from the house). The Loch Fleet National Nature Reserve is a couple miles down the road and is a lovely place to watch wading birds on the mudflats or look for seals at low tide. Nearby are nice beaches, good places to surf and kayak and we're only 30 minutes from some great hills. Royal Dornoch, Golspie and Brora golf courses are all within very easy reach and welcome visitors. In Golspie, there is a handful of shops, including a small supermarket, a chemist and an excellent hardware/gift store. Bigger shops are in Tain, a 25 minute drive away, where you can also visit the Glemorangie Distillery.
  • Staying at Becky's place is really comforting. It is a nice and warm family home and she is great host. We have slept very well in the bed and the room was also very comfortable. Becky has some great reccomendations for places to see or to grab a bite. We have experienced the real highlands here, it was a great weekend.

  • Wow, this is an amazing stay. Large room, free breakfast, super friendly family, and the aforementioned tour of the mill. Great location too for walks (sea and castle) and a strong sense of the highlands topography. One of the most hospitality stays I've ever had on air b and b😊

  • This is indeed the home of a family of superhosts. The hosts are lovely and friendly and I would recommend their home to anyone with a particular love of historic sites too. The room is large and the bed comfortable. The wifi was great. Lots of local knowledge happily shared and guests are truly welcomed in to the family. I look forward to going back!

  • After arriving in Edinburgh, Golspie was our first destination of a 5-day-roundtrip through Scotland. In this Airbnb, you will get a very friendly family, a hot cup of tea, hopefully a tour through the unique watermill, a tidy and comfy bedroom and, most importantly, a very good talk. Take your time, sit at their table and learn some thing about life in Scotland, you will "be" in their life for a short time - which we liked very much. We didn't plan all our stops and they were very helpful. Thank you for this wonderful start of our breathtaking tour. We even got the flour through customs, but not without questions... ;-)

    Philipp2019-10-11T00:00:00Z
  • A super spot nearby to Inverness and lovely people.

    Michele2019-10-07T00:00:00Z
  • What a beautiful place to stay. We saw a badger running along the road and I was buzzing because an owl flew right across the road in front of our car!! A great family home where we were made very welcome by Becky and Bob. Comfortable bed in a big room and we loved the fairy lights around the ceiling, might even copy the idea! 😊 We were delighted when Bob offered to show us around the mill on the day of our departure and I got some super photo's.

    Shirley2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • Becky and Bob were amazing hosts and incredibly generous when hosting us in Golspie.

  • Absolutely perfect!

  • Don's place is a beautiful sanctuary to unwind and relax in. Perfect location, clean, reliable, modern and extra touchs! Thanks for being such a good host!

    Emily2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • An amazing place in a great location. We were well looked after from the moment we arrived. Already looking at options for staying again later in the year.

    Chris2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • The place was clean, stylish and had everything we needed, including items that many places forget (like an ice tray and a bottle opener). The towels were nice and soft, the bed was comfortable and the apartment was warm despite the chilly weather outside. Don was readily available and happily supplied more wood and firelighters when we started running low. He was very friendly and a great host - he even included a little 'christmas gift' for us because we were there over the 25th, and the fridge had some milk, jams and butter already in it. Really lovely extra touches! The only two suggestions I could make would be to perhaps have a tray in the shower for soap, shampoo, etc as it's quite a small space and bending down to retrieve items from the floor is a bit of a squeeze; and to perhaps look at some footstools or a more comfortable single seater chair to accompany the sofa as it was quite a snug fit. We spent a few nights reading in front of the fire and it got a little uncomfortable after a while. Those are honestly the only two critiques I could give though. Everything else was fantastic and I couldn't reccomend the place more. The surrounding area is also beautiful (the beach is amazing) and everyone we came into contact with was very friendly. A truly lovely holiday all round!

    Jessica2019-12-28T00:00:00Z
  • Don is a fantastic host. The apartment is immaculate, spotlessly clean and super comfortable. Highly recommend!

    Bella2019-12-17T00:00:00Z
  • Apartment is high spec amenities. Everything was spotless, and Don went out of his way to accommodate all our requests. We would highly recommend staying here.

    Jennifer2019-12-03T00:00:00Z
  • Highly recommend staying here. It's warm and cosy, has a lovely interior, great kitchen facilities and is only a 10 minute walk into Dornoch town centre. All the small touches - tea, biscuits, slippers etc made the stay that much more comfortable, and Don was really friendly and responsive. Will definitely book again next time we're in the Highlands!

  • Jim and Gill are fantastic hosts - caring, knowledgeable, helpful, and make delicious breakfasts. The thoughtfulness that has went in to the space and its comforts is noticeable and very touching. Also, if I wasn't already vegan, I'd now be a convert as the food was so good and very generous with portions! I'd recommend this to anyone, especially if you're after the best night sleep. Thanks Gill and Jim!

Our vision was to create self-catering accommodation in the centre of the charming town of Dornoch. Our self-contained 2 berth Glamping Pod (King Size bed or Twin) is modern and quirky with a high spec finish. Its within short walking distance to restaurants, pubs, cafes, the world renowned Royal Dornoch Golf Course and Dornoch beach, one of the most wonderful beaches in the Highlands. Accommodation includes off road parking and an outdoor decked BBQ area to relax when the sun shines!
This is a bespoke glamping pod that we have designed and finished to a luxury standard. Its a small space but its quirky, unique and fun! :-)
The pod is located in the secluded corner of a residential area in the centre of Dornoch. There is no mountain view but that definitely has its advantages with many local attractions just a very short walk from Foxy's Den. Within 5 minutes walk to the world famous Royal Dornoch Golf Course, Dornoch's beautiful beach and many local amenities, restaurants and pubs also close by.
  • Great little place that is close to the center of town.

  • James's accommodation is clean and very comfortable. It is very well connected, has a Lidl 2 minutes walk and the main road 1 minute by car. James is very kind and detailed, I leave several food and drink items in the fridge.

  • Fabulous house right in the centre of Dornoch - 5 mins stroll from the town centre. The photos don’t really do the house justice... It’s been completely renovated from top to bottom, with lovely fixtures and fittings, heated floor tiles in the bathrooms, fantastic storage heaters, and every amenity you could possibly want. There’s loads of parking space and a lovely walled garden at the back which is ideal for young children. Communication was great before our stay and because we were there over Christmas, the owners were kind enough to put up a tree and decorations before we arrived and leave a couple of (hand wrapped) gifts - wine for adults and a toy for the kids. This is a great base for anyone looking to enjoy Dornoch, Tain and the surrounding area. We will definitely come back (if it’s not booked up!)

The Steading ground floor comprises of a spacious kitchen and a bath room with a shower. Up the stairs you find a double bedroom. Quite compact but very cosy.
Wi-fi is up and running. We have a eclectic collection of art in the Steading . Many of our friends are artists.
Very rural up a bumpy track.
  • Sue's place is literally heaven on earth. It is a magical place, full of art, little trinkets and nature. The accomodation itself was very spacious, extremely well-equipped and really clean. Sue was a very warm-hearted host and always helpful. The directions to accomodation were flawless. The surroundings are very calm and peaceful, perfect for a quiet getaway. There's almost nothing better than opening your over-bed window in a cozy bunk-bed and looking at the freshly-fallen snow whilst the wood-stove is warming up the house. This accomodation was the best we had during our 2-week-holiday in Scotland and we would love to come back one day. Highly recommended.

    Sebastian2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • Quirky wee place, idyllic spot in the countryside with a wood stove and a comfy bed. Thanks for having us!

  • We are very happy to have met Susan and John. A super nice couple, welcoming and generous. We thank them very much for this stay. We absolutely recommend.

    Mathilde2019-09-12T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful location, really fun accommodation, and the friendliest hosts. This place is quirky and just right for someone looking for a rustic, quiet, atypical airbnb.

    Natasha2019-09-05T00:00:00Z
  • We booked this place due to its quirkiness, we fancied something a bit different. Sue was there to great us on our arrival, make us feel at home and show us around the Strathy. She’d already got the log fire going for us! It doesn’t matter that it’s off the beaten track as the Strathy is fully equipped for self catering. We cooked both nights we were there with a plethora of cooking pots, pans and utensils. We wanted for nothing. The bed took some getting used to up in the eves but it all added to the quirkiness of the place. The shower was nice and hot and if you get a bit chilly there’s a red hot heater in there as well as a heater in the bedroom. There’s lots of interesting artwork about the Strathy and grounds so go and explore. I particularly liked the big drift wood throne and the robot frogs. Sue was conscientious, attentive, friendly and helpful along with Bob her little helper. N.B. The listing does state that Sue may want access to the shower and fridge in the Strathy but we never actually saw her using either during our 2 night stay. We would definitely stay here again if in the area (I would dearly like to spend time with Bob again).

    Alex2019-08-21T00:00:00Z
  • The accommodation is just as pretty and individual as in the pictures. The kitchen has everything you need, and the bedroom is extremely comfortable. The description and the pictures are perfect! Sue and John were very friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay there.

  • Housing roots and atypical but in line with the announcement. Very well equipped, the wood stove is very nice after having barroudé for several hours and that the weather is wet

  • We stayed here for 2 nights late January. The hut was cosy and warm and everything we needed for a relaxing break. The wood burner was perfect for a winter's night. James offered lots of ideas for things to see and places to visit and places to eat. Him and Sarah are the perfect hosts. Lots of extra touches including a lift to the local pub and back so we could have a glass of wine. Would thoroughly recommend staying here and we will definitely return and recommend to friends.

  • A beautiful cozy cottage, everything you need for a relaxing stay. There are beautiful views and it’s a lovely quiet location. We took our dogs and it was great to be able to let them out into the secure space at the back of the cottage. There is a fully equipped kitchen, and a cozy lounge area with plenty of seating and log burner. There is a bedroom downstairs with two single beds and mezzanine bedroom with a double bed. The bathroom has a shower over bath (good water pressure) and underfloor heating which keeps it nice and cosy. Everywhere is freshly decorated, light and bright. Charlotte and Richard are great hosts, very helpful and friendly, they are available if you need them during your stay whilst respecting your privacy. I thoroughly recommend this lovely cottage to anyone thinking of visiting the area.

    Tanya2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed here when Storm Ciara was causing havoc, we were up visiting family so know the area. We decided to try to stay in an Airbnb rather than put out elderly parents. Springfield was perfect. Check-in was easy and we were in communication all journey as the weather was delaying us. The accommodation was very spacious and we loved the double-height open-plan kitchen/lounge with a much needed log-burner. Parking was never an issue due to 2 allocated spaces directly outside of the cottage. We would highly recommend the cottage and look forward to returning ourselves in the future.

  • Perfect location, secluded yet still really close to Dornoch and Tain by car. Excellent communication and easy to find using the Google maps coordinates. Private garden area available ar rear which was great for the dog. A lovely relaxing 2 days.

  • This is a clean, cosy and comfortable place in a rural setting off the A9 north of Dornoch. Charlotte & Richard are good communicators providing lots of information. Recommended

    Nadia2019-11-06T00:00:00Z
  • We had an absolutely amazing weekend staying at Charlotte and Richard's cottage. The cottage was absolutely perfect and had everything we needed - Charlotte was really thoughtful and included a travel cot, highchair and nappy bags as she knew we had young children. The location is also perfect - close to the A9 so that it only takes minutes to get to the lovely beaches of Dornoch but also completely calm and secluded. Our 2 year old son absolutely loved the cows in the field opposite the house. The area also has some fantastic wood walks and Charlotte and Richard provided excellent leaflets about what was available. We highly recommend both the cottage and the area for a great weekend away.

    Isabelle2019-10-21T00:00:00Z
  • Look no further! This is a great place to stay when exploring Scotland. Charlotte and Richard were very helpful and I highly suggest staying here if you are looking for a nice stay!

Coorie: a Scottish word for a hug, a safe embrace - this self catering cottage gives you exactly that. After an extensive refurbishment, the cottage expresses its "home away from home" ethos where guests instantly connect with its charming and beautiful décor of the highest quality. Located in the centre of Dornoch with plenty parking at the front of the property.
Three comfortable bedrooms with private shower/bath. Warm "Snug" to relax after a day enjoying the fresh Highland air.
  • I wont tell anyone where we stayed in Dornoch this year, as I would prefer to keep Coorie a secret! A beautiful house, with everything that we needed, it was fab. We preferred to stay in at night in front of the fire, and eat in the snug. It was amazing.

  • Evies’s place is a gorgeous cottage, beautifully designed and so cosy and comfortable. It may seem expensive but it is worth every penny ...we immediately felt at home and really didn’t want to leave this morning!

  • Coorie Cottage has been beautifully renovated, is stylishly furbished and conveniently located in town. But it’s the small touches that Evie has thought of that makes the difference. Perfect for a weekend away, I would highly recommend it.

    Paula2019-07-21T00:00:00Z
  • This house is simply amazing, with recently (2019) completed renovations, there are two upstairs bedrooms, each with a king bed and each with their own bathroom/shower. The downstairs also has a slightly larger king bed and full bath. My husband, 8 yr old son, my sister, and my father all shared the house comfortably for 4 nights. The shared spaces are beautifully decorated and easy for a group to hang out in the kitchen, outside, living or dining areas (we used all!). It is a short 3 minute walk to restaurants and an easy walk to the beach. I almost don’t want to write all of this because I want to keep it a hidden gem! Evie was easy to get hold of and there were absolutely no concerns. Clean and gorgeous. I can’t wait to come back to Dornoch and stay here.

    Katie2019-07-01T00:00:00Z

  • Susan’s place is perfect for a break away in Scotland. It’s situated perfectly. It’s not far from Inverness airport, on the way to the cottage there are shops for you to grab a food shop ready for your stay. We went into both Dornoch and Tain which had a range of shops including the Harry Gow bakery- a must try. The cottage itself is amazing. It’s very cosy, was sparkling clean and has some lovely touches. The kitchen has many utensils and all you need for cooking during your stay. Our beds were very comfortable. I’d buy h

  • Three of us had a great stay at Susan’s place whilst on a business trip for two nights. Communication was great and the house is very quaint, clean and well finished with plenty of equipment. There are a few places in the surrounding area to eat but we found a good Indian restaurant in Brora about 20mins drive away. We would definitely stay again if we are ever up that way!

  • Beautifully located and accessible - the views of the beach and ease of walking around town make Bracoden House a perfect place to stay. Jacqui's hospitality is also amazing - lovely breakfast, very easy to check in and out, and the best dog to meet and greet with. We loved our stay!

    Colette2020-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • I arranged a one night stay for my parents there. She waited up late for them when their train into Inverness was delayed. Nice, comfortable decor, spotlessly clean and Jacqui was so kind to my Mum who was feeling unwell. Highly recommended.

    Galien2019-09-26T00:00:00Z
  • Jacqui's B&B is right on the road through Golspie directly overlooking the sea. The outside looked smart and inviting and we were not disappointed once we got to our room! Beautifully decorated, large, airy room with a full-size bathroom which was an added bonus. Lovely breakfast the next day too. We stayed in a number of B&Bs throughout our trip on the NC500 and I think this was my favourite. Jacqui was a lovely, friendly host and communication from start to finish was perfect!

    Julie2019-09-18T00:00:00Z
  • Jacqui’s place was wonderful and so close to the beach. Breakfast was served in the room with scotch eggs. The room was clean and bathroom was spacious. I recommend her b&b if you’re exploring Golspie area.

  • We saw in the new year by spending a few days at The Old School House. It's in a lovely remote spot near the Firth of Forth. You can see the beautiful sunrise over the Firth every morning from the kitchen and back bedroom. The space has literally everything you need. Sometimes you turn up at an Airbnb and the kitchen is equipped but you think of a few things that you wish you had. This is NOT the case in The Old School House! I had taken tin foil, salt and pepper etc all in preparation for my stay. But Judy has literally thought of everything. It's a home away from home. The space itself is very cosy. A great log burner and warm central heating to keep you warm. Judy and her husband were so helpful and accommodating in every sense. The pretty village of Dornoch was nearby for independent shops and beautiful beach walks. There's plenty supermarkets in Tain (an Asda and Tesco Superstore). We used this stay as our base for plenty of beautiful walks around the local area. A really lovely way to spend the new year.

  • Very nice, comfortable accommodation and the hosts are very welcoming. We highly recommend this address.

    Elisabeth2019-08-21T00:00:00Z
  • Judys cottage is wonderful! Spacious, historically charming, very Scottish with all the nice linen and Details and very comfortable. Our dog immediatly could sleep beside the oven after having troubles getting used to the surrounding in the previous cottages. Nice little dogwalk starts at the property. There are actually three big bathrooms with two bathtubs, one the longest I‘ve ever been in. We will be back!

  • A great place to stay - so pleased to have found it. My husband and I stayed for a week in the latter half of September. The site was blissfully peaceful and the weather was glorious. The caravan has a decent sized kitchen and lounge area and so was perfect for cooking and relaxing. There is also a nice deck area that catches the sun that we used a lot. It is a 5 minute drive or a 20 minute walk into Dornoch. Moira was a perfect host. She sent a few messages prior to our stay and was was also on hand to respond to queries during our stay. We will definitely book again next time we're in the Highlands.

    Hina2019-09-23T00:00:00Z
  • Pitgrudy is a really nice place to stay. The accommodation is very clean, tidy and the host was very quick at responding. The location is very good for exploring that part of Sutherland and also the Black Isle - and Inverness isn’t too far away if you don’t mind just under an hours drive. Near by, Dornoch has plenty to offer - although we only used the supermarket. This our third stay at the property and would certainly stay there again.

    Catriona2019-06-01T00:00:00Z
  • The caravan is spotlessly clean, very cosy and lovely and warm. It has everything you need and is located about a mile from Dornoch centre. My friend and I found it ideal for our golfing trip and would not hesitate to recommend it to any of our friends and family.

    Terry2019-04-13T00:00:00Z
  • Moira was a fantastic host. We booked this accommodation as we were working in the area. The home itself was immaculate. All the amenities you would need to feel like being at home. Everything was brand new. Really modern decor. Towels, cleaning products and toiletries all provided for. Communication was 1st Class and Moira was more than helpful with any questions I had. The Holiday Park was also really well set up with good laundry facilities. The site is a mixture of owners and holidaymakers. Would definitely come back with my family for a holiday and Dornoch is beautiful, the surrounding areas are some of the most beautiful surroundings in Scotland. Also perfectly located for Golfers with Royal Dornoch just down the road. I recommend staying here and hope you enjoy your time as much as I did.

  • We loved Margaret's place. A beautiful view, close enough to town to walk in for dinner, very comfortable and quiet. Also Margaret is a lovely host, knowing it was our honeymoon we were greeted with a card and gift, which we found so thoughtful.

  • A great place to spend a few days. Great views and a stylish space. Lovely walk along the coastline into town. Fantastic and very friendly hosts made this a very enjoyable stay. The house is well equipped and clean with some nice touches. The kitchen sink in the bathroom is a bit strange! The space is large enough in the kitchen area that a sink could have been incorporated and still kept the stylish appearance. It is the only compromise in an otherwise superb property.

    Carol2019-08-29T00:00:00Z
  • The studio is located in an amazing area with a wonderful view! The studio is located in a quiet area, but in the same time you are very close to restaurants or grocery stores, the train station. I would recommend it also for a writing retreat (I would like to do that myself). The hosts were very nice and helpful. They gave us a rode from and to the train station, although it was not far but since it was raining it was really helpful. Overall, we had a great stay!

  • Fantastic apartment, great location, beautifully decorated and finished to a high exacting standard. Lots of space as and extremely comfortable. I really can’t find any constructive criticism to add! Comfortable master bedroom, high quality linens, soft carpets, warm, underfloor heating, nice lighting solutions. Thoughtful touches throughout. I want to buy this house myself haha. Would definitely stay here again if in the area. Many thanks. Alex
