Places to stay in Berkeley

Places to stay in Berkeley
Traditional Japanese architecture tucked away in a great Berkeley neighborhood. Peaceful and quiet but just a few blocks to UC Berkeley, all the restaurants of the "Gourmet Ghetto", and the North Berkeley Bart station. WE ARE AVAILABLE FOR HOSTING. DUE TO CORONAVIRUS, WE REQUIRE THAT NO MORE THAN 2 GUESTS STAY, WITH NO OHER VISITORS ALLOWED AND WE CAN NOT ACCOMODATE REQUESTS FOR EARLY CHECK IN OR LATE CHECKOUT. Berkeley Short Term Rental Registration # ZCSTR2017-0007
Traditional Japanese building with Tatami mats, organic queen size futon, and an "Ofuro"- a deep and luxurious soaking tub (similar feel to a hot tub). Entering the tub requires agility as it is high and you have to stand on a bench, sit on the edge of the tub, and swing your legs around. If you have any questions about that please ask (and see pictures). Lots of natural light with five skylights. Older wooden building with a somewhat rustic feel. The woven grass tatami mat floors have a noticeable smell of dry grass which we find to be lovely, but may not be for everyone. Comfortably sleeps 2 in new all natural foam mattress. Minimal kitchen with small fridge, tea kettle, and small toaster oven. We use fragrance free and non-toxic cleaning materials and provide Dr. Bronners hand soap. There is a fan available for use.
Peaceful neighborhood just minutes from downtown Berkeley and UC Berkeley. Close to amenities including restaurants, coffee (Philz!), grocery stores, Farmers' market (Thursday afternoons), ice cream parlors, beauty salons, and drugstores.
  • This place is very well designed for its theme. My wife and I only stayed one night and wanted to stay more. The bathtub is uniquely relaxing as well as the skylights through out the place. The moon was so bright that we didn’t use any electricity and let the moonlight shine in. So strongly recommend this place if you’re passing through San Francisco area.

  • Such a cool space! My sister was visiting from Japan so we picked this to give me a bit of a taste, and she really liked it compared to the accommodations like that she has seen in Japan. She said it was basically a bigger version with a more comfortable bed. Check in instructions were very clear and we had a breeze getting in and out.

  • Words don’t do justice to just how majestic and nice this listing is. The property is very beautiful, very private and you even can wake up to sound of the creek that’s right outside the window. The jacuzzi was nice and hot and let’s you seen the sunset. Also, the hosts were very accommodating and quick to respond. I will definitely be staying here again in the near future.

It's a min away from UC BERKELEY and 15 mins walk to downtown Berkeley Bart station. Great place for someone looking for quiet and cozy place. Complimentary tea provided from House Of Curries ( restaurant located downstairs)
The room has attached private bathroom.
Berkeley city is usually student friendly area. It is also one of the safest area I know.
  • Bishal responds extremely fast! The room is what it is! Simple and cheap. Probably best if you just need a place to sleep and head out since the rooms pretty bare!

    Yu2020-01-10T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent location for Berkeley, very vibrant safe area.Relaxed and friendly, you’re literally minutes and in many cases seconds away from things. The Belgian waffles down the street were awesome ! Bishal was a friendly helpful host. The room was exactly as advertised.Water pressure was great in the shower.A few things that did surprise me.The room was very cool even during those crazy few heatwave days we just had.Secondly It was very quiet in there, and also I had imagined being above a Indian restaurant to be constantly smelling food and spices but that was not the case at all.I would stay at Bishals again it was great value.

    David2019-06-30T00:00:00Z
  • Great location, so many food places nearby. The area is upbeat and safe. Bishal is a great host, he responded to every message in less than 30 mins. The room was clean and sufficient.

All are welcome at our beautiful peaceful garden studio. It is the back of our historic home, the oldest standing structure in Berkeley! We are close to BART with easy access to SF and UC Berkeley and two blocks from Berkeley’s famous Fourth Street shopping area with unique boutiques, great restaurants, and coffee houses. Entry is private and the garden is yours to enjoy. The mini fridge, microwave, fresh ground Peet's, tea, and Laurie's famous granola will help you feel right at home.
Important note: We have always been very serious about our cleaning, maintaining a 5.00 review score. However, in early March we attended a workshop on how to properly clean and disinfect touchable surfaces to prevent transmission of Corona Virus. We are now treating our touchable surfaces with 99% alcohol and bleach-based solutions between guests. On to happier details..... Our studio accommodates two adults comfortably. The main room is 23' x 12' and the bathroom is large. The entrance is private and windows look out onto our peaceful backyard garden. South-facing windows and high ceilings create an airy sunny vibe. There is business class high speed wifi and cable TV. Our guests love our Leesa memory foam mattress fitted with down comforter and plenty of extra pillows and blankets. (Note: This is a great supportive mattress for bad backs.) The kitchenette station is equipped with microwave, mini fridge, and dishes. It is appropriate for preparing breakfast, lunch or heating up leftovers for dinner. It includes an electric kettle, Chemex coffee pot, assorted coffees, teas, cocoa, soup, and some condiments. We provide some additional snacks, cold drinks, a yogurt, milk for coffee, and Laurie's famous homemade granola. The bathroom has a large immaculate claw foot bath tub/shower combo. Towels, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, a hair dryer, and iron are all available. This is an old house but not a drafty cold old house. The morning sun streams into the bank of south-facing windows. Heat is controlled by a Nest thermostat modulated by motion sensors that keep the place at a comfortable temperature when you are in. We hope you will enjoy the garden patio seating area during your stay. Smoking is fine in the backyard but not in the house. There is plenty of free street parking nearby. This is one of the few residential areas in Berkeley where extended free parking is available. This is also a safe neighborhood! You can relax and enjoy walking to BART, strolling to Fourth Street, or walking to or from your car in the evening. Note: We appreciate cleanliness when we travel so we go the extra mile to provide you with a very clean place in which you can truly feel comfortable. We are going all out and wiping down EVERY touchable surface with disinfectant solution between guests during the COVD-19 global outbreak. It takes a lot of time, but that's what we would want if we were your guests.
We are on a quiet residential street but two short blocks from Fourth Street, the premiere shopping and dining area in Berkeley. Outdoors: This is a terrific launch point for visiting some of the premiere non-touristy outdoor gems in our area. The Berkeley Marina is less than a mile away. Enjoy Bay vistas as you walk the short trails or opt to join the Bay Trail, a 500 mile trail along the edge of the Bay. Laurie, an avid sailor, would be happy to steer you towards a sailing or kayaking adventure. Just give us a heads up before you arrive. Just to our East, Tilden Park and the East Bay Regional Parks have great trails, from one mile easy walks to a Bay vista to some seriously challenging cross country hikes. We have books in your room on local hikes around the Bay as well as the Point Reyes area.
  • An absolutely beautiful, clean, comfortable, thoughtfully appointed space!! The patio was also wonderful to sit in. Ron and Laurie were easy to communicate with, and extended a warm hospitality during my stay. The studio is also in a great location near shops and food. Thank you!

All of the amenities provided by Ron and Laurie were so thoughtful and much appreciated! It was great to have some complimentary snacks on hand. • Ron & Laurie’s place exceeds all expectations! They are such friendly and thoughtful hosts, they have thought of every detail that a traveler may need and truly go above and beyond for their guests. Our newly remodeled 200 sq ft tiny house is a perfect Berkeley retreat. It is walking distance to BART into San Fran. (1 mile), Cal campus (1 mile), Gourmet Ghetto (world-class cuisine), Berkeley Rose Garden, and the Berkeley Marina (1.5 miles). You’ll love our place because of the light, the comfy bed, and the coziness (it's a tiny house!). It's perfect for couples, solo adventurers, business travelers, and small families. We have 2 queen size beds including one in a relaxing loft space
The tiny house is a separate small space, 200 total square feet, located in the back of the main residence. There is a shower, loft bed (please note the loft ceiling is low for those who don't like tight spaces) , Murphy bed and kitchenette in the house. We share a portion of the backyard. The tiny house has a private gated entrance and separate patio. The space was inspired by the tiny house movement. We hope to provide a lovely, relaxing space that fills all the needs of our guests.
The tiny house resides in the coveted NorthBrae district of Berkeley. It is centrally located in a quiet residential neighborhood. Plenty of street parking is available with no permit required. The neighborhood is quiet and peaceful. We are walking distance to amazing restaurants, coffee, grocery markets and BART. Cal campus is 2 miles away or one stop on BART.

Our newly built private cottage has its own bathroom, reading nook with comfy chair, new 27" Apple monitor for streaming videos, microwave, small fridge, and full-size bed. A REAL bed.
This sweet space is cozy but filled with southern light. You'll have access to a big yard with real grass (drought resistant!), lemon tree, lime tree, apple tree, rosemary bushes, jasmine, and a brick patio for al fresco dining or morning coffee. In addition to the fridge and microwave, you'll find a new coffee maker, fresh coffee, tea, hot chocolate and oatmeal. We'll make sure there's milk, and most importantly, a local craft brew to welcome you!
We're right on the Berkeley/Albany border, three houses from the corner of Solano. Solano Avenue is our main street, lined with restaurants, bars, salons, shops, grocery stores, a theatre, and cafes.
  • Beautiful, clean, private space, hosted by a lovely family in a beautiful, quaint neighborhood with everything you could want in walking distance! Definitely would stay here again!

  • This was our fist time staying at an Airbnb so we didn’t exactly know what to expect. Our stay was very pleasant. The cottage is located in the back yard of a charming house on a beautiful street. We arrived late after our hosts retired for the evening. We where able to get the key to the cottage from the lockbox hanging on the yard gate using the access code they provided. The way into the yard through the fence is a bit narrow due to a garden planter. This was no problem for us, but might be difficult to navigate with larger luggage. The cottage was spacious, charming and immaculately clean. We always found parking right in front of the house on all three days of our stay. We met our lovely host family as we left every morning at the same time they took there children to school. The house is walking distance from the charming shopping and restaurant village along Solano Ave. I would suggest eating at Zachary's Pizza, which is my favorite pizza parlor in the world. UC Berkeley is only a 15 minutes drive. I would definitely consider staying here again.

  • Stephen and Marin's place was really lovely for what I needed. I was in town for a week-long residency and was in meetings from 9 am to 9 pm daily. It was perfectly quiet, clean, plenty of parking, plenty of hot water for showers, and close to everything. Note that the entrance is a little tight if you have large bags as I did, but you can make do. Thank you again!

A small brown shingled creekside cottage is located in a sunny rear garden with lots of birds and a little dog. A bathroom extension was just added to the cottage. The cottage is located within walking distance to restaurants, coffee shops. 15 minute walk to North Berkeley BART.
My home and cottage stand on the last remaining parcels of Christiana tract, a former Berkeley farm which is along Cordornices Creek.. It is a place of restful beauty with a large cottonwood tree adjacent to the cottage and two great redwoods across the creek. For solitude, peace and quiet, and a bit of wilderness in a busy world, it is perfect. It is also only 13 houses from coffee shops, fine dining, Berkeley Natural Foods and transportation.
I love the variety of my neighborhood and also being able to walk to everything. It's an active multicultural neighborhood with bustling businesses and a variety of ages,. At the corner one can buy coffee, bagels, out-standing sweets, and even organic groceries. There is a beautiful nursery that is a treat to visit.. Curtis and Gilman is the crossroads of the Ohlone trail which is the name of the BART path and is filled daily with bicyclists, commuters, walkers, strollers, people exercising and dog walkers. There are several neighborhood restaurants - La Limes is a high- end excellent restaurant. There is a delicious Sushi Place.. Coming in late March is the Westbrae Bier Garden with the Brazilian Food Truck. They will serve beer and wine Tri tip. Also various food trucks will be there weekly.. The Berkeley Natural Grocery is across from La Limes. If my guests want to visit Berkeley, and the University, it is 20 minutes away. This is the perfect location. San Francisco is also very close, about 40 minutes by Bart. Once in San Francisco, One can explore the city neighborhoods or visit the Museums using public transportation. Po

Upscale North Berkeley locale, walking distance to UC Berkeley, art galleries, restaurants and cafes, public transportation to SF, parks, the Bay. Culture, music, theater, recreation. This suite has it's own bathroom and entrance for your privacy.
Our space is cozy and quiet. We live in a split-level house. The Airbnb space is located on the lower level, half a flight down from our kitchen, It has it's own entrance, from the outside, so you can have complete privacy. You will enter through the garage, which used to be my art studio and is now converted into a kitchenette. The bedroom is well-insulated so it stays warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Double-pane windows let in lots of fresh air. The bedroom is stocked with games, cards and books, as well as lots of outlets for your devices. There's a wifi booster in the room. All the bedding, the bed and mattress themselves are new and always freshly laundered when you arrive. You have your own private bathroom with roomy shower. The kitchenette is equipped with a mini fridge and microwave, plates, utensils, glassware, coffee, tea, half and half and guest treats. Please note: ceiling height in bedroom is 6'6", in bathroom is 6'9" and entry room is 8'. The space is street level in the entry room, and partially underground in the bath and bedroom. You are welcome to use the side patio for hanging out outside and enjoying our temperate climate, as well as our large backyard. Motion detector and solar lights will help you find your way to the Airbnb entrance at night. If your stay is five nights or longer, you may use our washing machine and dryer but please check with us first so we can show you how to use them.
Berkeley is a wonderful city - it's eclectic, full of culture: art, theater, music (including lots of street music), a great place to rent a bike and explore our huge regional park or the coastline along San Francisco Bay. There's hiking nearby, jogging trails as well. We love our coffee, fresh bread, cheeses, artisanal beer and farmers markets. Downtown San Francisco is about forty minutes away via our rapid transit system, BART. Our home is located in a quiet, tree-lined residential neighborhood near the UC Berkeley Campus. We walk everywhere - downtown, to different shopping districts. We also have plenty of street parking.
  • I would 100% recommended anyone visiting the Bay Area to stay at this Airbnb. It’s a really nice spot located in an amazing neighborhood. Definitely check out Indian Rock Park, which is only a couple of minutes to walk to from the location. The Airbnb is filled with everything you will need for your stay. Susan is an amazing host who is willing to work with you! Can’t wait to come back soon!

    Riyanna2020-03-20T00:00:00Z
  • Susan’s space is nicely located in North Berkeley. Susan was very easy to communicate with, and this was a great value (especially given the location).

    Phil2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Susan was very welcoming and great at communicating prior to and during the stay. My mom and her friend really liked her place and her amazing hospitality! They spent a great week visiting San Francisco and surroundings. Highly reccomended!

    Gabriele2020-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • Well located space, creatively burrowed into a house with interesting, tasteful decorations, a comfortable bed and all the amenities one could wish for. We enjoyed our stay and our hosts are clearly people who are willing to go the extra mile for their guests.

  • Super easy check-in and a great location.

    Nicolas2020-02-10T00:00:00Z
  • Susan was an excellent and caring host. The space was clean and well appointed. The personal touches made you feel welcome right from the start. The coffee, tea, wine and beer in the mini fridge and bowls of fruit and candy were much appreciated. Susan is on site for any help you may need while in Berkeley, but out of sight if you are familiar. The space is walkable to the Gourmet Ghetto and it’s fine restaurants. It is also walkable to Solano Avenue shops and markets. The space was warmly decorated and it had everything you will need to enjoy your time in Berkeley. Thank you for a great stay.

    Catherine2020-01-29T00:00:00Z
  • A cute place within walking distance to UC Berkeley, and local restaurants/shops. Susan was a warm, friendly and welcoming host, lots of nice personal touches. She also gave us some great recommendations and local area information.

Beautiful backyard cottage with modern interior and green roof. A posh tiny house experience! Comfortable, lofted double bed, with new, larger sofa and TV underneath. The kitchenette has a microwave, toaster, coffee machine, electric kettle and mini fridge. There is no stove. Restaurants and coffee shops in easy walking distance. About 1 mile from campus and main downtown area. Bart is also about a mile away, so it's a quick hop to San Francisco. zoning permit: ZCSTR2018-0135
The cottage is modern, clean, and also on the small side. While it could sleep three people, it's probably better suited for 1-2. Please note there is an extra person fee of $25 per night for a third guest, as well as a two night minimum for three guests. There is a one-time extra $30 charge for two guests sleeping separately due to the higher volume of laundry. The bed is lofted, only accessible by stairs.
Some nearby places to eat The Homemade Café is a popular breakfast spot (two blocks away on the corner of Dwight and Sacramento). Mo’Joe Café has great coffee and serves breakfast and lunch (one block away on Sacramento and Blake). Caffe Chiave is also a great coffee shop, about a 12 minute walk (at the corner of Dwight and San Pablo). I’ve really enjoyed the food and atmosphere at Longbranch Saloon (on the same block as Caffe Chiave). Closed Mondays Le Pho is a Vietnamese restaurant directly across the street from Caffe Chiave, and has come highly recommended by guests. Standard Fare is wonderful for casual, yet delectable breakfast and lunch. It’s owned by a former Chez Panisse chef (located on the corner of 8th and Carleton). La Marcha is a wonderful tapas bar on San Pablo, near University. La Capilla has great tacos and burritos. It’s on University close to San Pablo St. Eureka! has also come highly recommended from a guest and it’s in downtown Berkeley. Creekwood is a new restaurant serving Cal-Italian fare. The food is fresh and delicious. It’s located at 3121 Sacramento St, by 67th and is closed Mondays. Teni East Kitchen is my new favorite restaurant! The chef owner worked at Burma Superstar for several years and just opened her own place. It’s located at 4015 Broadway in Oakland and is open daily for lunch and dinner. Kirala and Kirala 2 are my favorite places for sushi in Berkeley. Kirala 2 is located in the Epicurious Garden in the “Gourmet Ghetto” on Shattuck in North Berkeley and is more of a take-out place, while Kirala is a restaurant on Ward and Shattuck in South Berkeley. Berkeley Bowl West is a great grocery store (on Heinz, near 9th Street, a 4 min. drive). Cheeseboard Pizza and Chez Panisse are two well known Berkeley eateries, both located on Shattuck. Expect long lines for the famous pizza! I love Summer Kitchen for excellent wood fired pizzas and little to no wait. It’s located on College Avenue, off of Ashby.
  • Nina’s space is beautiful! The home was comfortable and provided the escape we needed.

    Tiffany2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • We loved this cottage. Away from the hustle and bustle but just a few miles from downtown. The house was so clean and just as described. We will be back!

    Pascal2020-02-25T00:00:00Z
  • This place is excellent. It’s really well thought out with many lovely design elements. For a small space, there is plenty of room where it’s needed. The location is close to many great restaurants and things to do, yet it is SO QUIET for sleeping. Highly recommended.

    Mia2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely place and wonderful host. The place was very modern and clean. Nina made sure everything was okay and we gladly appreciate the attention. There were even snacks for us when we arrived. All and all great place.

    Patrick2020-02-14T00:00:00Z
  • My stay at Nina's backyard bungalow was excellent. The space was beautifully and thoughtfully laid out. My stay was restful and close to downtown Berkeley. This spot had everything I needed. Nina also added the sweet touches of fresh flowers and a stocked cabinet with snacks and toiletries. There were so many touches that made this stay enjoyable.

    Olivia2020-02-11T00:00:00Z
  • I loved staying in Nina's cottage. Everything is as described and pictured. It was perfect for one person but would be great for two as well. Highly recommend, would stay there again.

A private in-law studio with own entrance close to everything: Ashby Bart (0.6 miles), Bay Bridge on-ramp, Emeryville, Rockridge, Berkeley, Telegraph Ave, and UC Berkeley. It's a cozy, clean, and minimalist space with a queen bed, new modern bathroom, and kitchenette (fridge, kitchen sink, kettle, microwave, and counter space). The kitchenette is stocked with flatware, plates, mugs, glasses, bowls, coffee cone and filters, and dish soap. Plenty of parking on street directly outside of in-law.
  • This apartment had an easy check-in process and was sparkling clean! my boyfriend really loved the shower (he's weird and always needs to have good shower pressure LOL). we were right where we needed to be near my friends house. if you ever stay here, definitely check out the Wolfhound Bar for drinks and Lois the Pie Queen for breakfast/food!

  • This place was in a great location near BART, had easy access to Berkeley and Oakland. The space was nice and clean. Perfect for not needing to be in the room for long periods of time. The bathroom was very upscale and nice. A little cold in the evening and the small heater wasn’t working, but all in all a nice place.

The gorgeous spa bathroom includes: a large tub, 3-function shower with jets, towel warmer, a double sink and velvet couch. We provide shampoo, conditioner, body soap and lotion. Very nice and safe neighborhood with easy access to Downtown/ UC Berkeley & San Francisco. The house is located at the base of the Berkeley Hills, in a neighborhood called Thousand Oaks. The closest dining & shopping area is on Solano Avenue—approximately a 5-10 minute walk from the house; the street has an old-time feel straddled by a wide range of businesses including coffee shops, bookstores, restaurants, antique dealers, salons, etc.

Would definitely stay again

Emilie's tips and suggestions were incredibly helpful, and she responded promptly to every question we had. The space itself is beautiful- beautiful nature light, quiet, and very spacious. • Larry’s spot was great for a weekend stay. The airbnb is the downstairs portion to his house and is secluded from the rest of the house ensuring privacy. There’s DVDs and books if every genre so there’s plenty to keep you occupied during ur stay. Larry was accomodating of early checkin and had good communication. I’m from the Southbay and rarely come up to the north eastbay so it was a good change of scenery. Would recommend staying here no matter if youre local or a tourist.

Our tucked-away, quiet studio is a 5 minute walk to UC Berkeley and 20 minutes to the Gourmet Ghetto. The space has amazing natural light with 4 skylights and garden facing windows. There is a patio deck with table and chairs to enjoy meals outdoors. Previously an art studio, our space is detached building sharing no walls. A calm home base for visiting Berkeley or the UC. Newly remodeled in October 2019. The space features a kitchenette, closet space, fast WiFi, queen bed, and a writing desk.
Our favorite part of the studio is dining outside on the deck under the many tall trees! Birds and squirrels often come to visit making this place feel secluded and serene, yet it's a twenty minute walk downhill to the most central parts of Berkeley and the train station. The kitchenette is very simple - best for a meal or two but not every meal. There is a water filter, hot water kettle and a coffee maker (induction heater also available - just ask). Most exciting is the brand new bathroom with Heath tiles and a rain shower with a view of the garden. You will be staying in the Painting Studio 2.0 so to speak. We have just finished a major remodel (in October 2019) of the studio including new wood floors, insulation, new cabinetry, new closet, new lighting and electrical and new interior paint. We put in some nice touches such as a Subzero Fridge with freezer and built in custom solid maple floating nite stands. We hope you enjoy the studio and find it comfortable!
Right below our neighborhood is UC Berkeley Campus, Downtown Berkeley and the North Berkeley Gourmet Zone for incredible dining! Chez Panisse, Cheeseboard Collective & Pizza, Thursday Farmers Market, and so much more. Right above our street is Tilden Regional Park and the UC Berkeley Botanical Gardens. Downtown Berkeley is a 20 minute walk (all downhill).
  • Had a really lovely stay here. It's peaceful, private and quiet - feels like you're nestled away in the woods. I especially loved the backyard and neighborhood. The space is beautifully decorated and has everything you need. Noah was also a great host - communicative, attentive and easy-going. Would absolutely come stay again!

    Linda2020-04-04T00:00:00Z

  • The studio is a really great retreat: spacious, light filled, peaceful. The yard is a joy, and I spent a lovely hour in the afternoon reading and basking in the sunlight. The studio is a nice 10 minute walk to campus, or about 20 minutes down to shops and restaurants. Highly recommended!

    Nick2020-03-04T00:00:00Z
  • This place felt like a true retreat: quiet, clean, scenic. Great for meditation/prayer/writing/reflection. A word of warning: don’t try to haul a heavy suitcase up those steep hills unless you are in good shape!

    Krista2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • This is such a charming studio full of natural light. Noah has thought of everything to make for a very comfortable stay and provided great tips for places to eat around Berkeley.

    Lisa2020-02-17T00:00:00Z

  • This is a very good option when staying in the East Bay. I particularly liked walking around the surrounding neighborhood of older homes and small independent stores, which I would have loved to explore more if I had had the time.

Interaction with guests We respect your privacy, but are available to answer any questions or requests during your stay. We will do our best to make sure you have a comfortable stay! Other things to note Our rates are all-inclusive - all utilities (including Internet/wi-fi). Fully furnished and equipped. Minimum stay 14 days. The Building A bit of history: Eric Lindblom from Sweden came to the US in the late 1880s and was one of the “Three Lucky Swedes” who discovered gold in the Nome district of Alaska. He invested the proceeds in real estate (among other things), including the Claremont Hotel – and his former wife had this building built in 1911! See photo of the building as it was 100 years ago! The Neighborhood The apartment is in the Elmwood residential district, 2 blocks from Telegraph Avenue, 1 block from College Avenue, very close to public transport. The location has a walk score of 94 which classifies it as a “Walker’s Paradise”! Leave your car behind! You can rent a car on an as-needed basis from Zipcar or City Car Share locations close by. It’s 5-10 minutes’ walk from numerous ethnic and specialty restaurants (Italian, Indian, Thai, Ethiopian, French, Japanese, burgers, pizza, Swiss-style fondue, Chinese, Korean barbecue, a Subway), coffee houses, bookstores, vintage clothing stores, music stores, and student hangouts. A large CVS pharmacy is 2 blocks away, and Whole Foods is 5 minutes by car or a 15 minute walk (6-1/2 blocks). Access: There are buses on College Avenue (1 block away) to downtown Berkeley, the 3 nearby BART stations (Bay Area Rapid Transit system), Oakland and San Francisco. The Claremont Hotel & Conference Center is just over a mile away (20 min walk). There is freeway access either at Telegraph Avenue & 55th Street (about 2 miles) or Ashby Avenue (about 3 miles) where you can drive to San Francisco, Oakland, Marin County & the Golden Gate Bridge, Napa Valley, and Lake Tahoe. Twenty minutes driving (outside rush hours!) will take you to San Francisco across the Bay Bridge. If you take BART from any of the 3 nearby stations, it’s about a 20 minute ride to SF. Pricing •Our rates are all-inclusive. We pay the Berkeley business license tax, but it is not charged to you. •The accommodation charge includes cleaning and stocking with essential supplies before you move in. There is no separate cleaning fee. The fine print (otherwise known as house rules): • Minimum stay 14 days. • If you stay between 14 and 30 days, you will need to pay a 12% transient accommodation tax required by the City of Berkeley. Airbnb will collect that from you when you book. •No smoking of any kind in the apartment or anywhere else in the building - the hallways, stairways, and the grounds! It's against the law: the City of Berkeley prohibits smoking anywhere in multi-unit buildings. We also prohibit vaping (e-cigarettes) because it creates many of the same issues as second-hand cigarette smoke. •No parties or loud noise. This is a generally quiet residential neighborhood, and we want to keep it that way. Quiet time is after 10 PM and before 7:30 AM. •Sorry, no pets. •For residential purposes only (home office OK).
  • Excellent place in a beautiful and convenient location. This was our 4th time staying in property of this Super Host. We’ve always had a wonderful experience.

  • Margaret's airbnb is lovely, very close to UC campus and Elmwood district. Margaret was very accommodating, allowing us to extend our stay while we were in our airbnb and our new apartment we were moving into was not ready yet. Bruk & Binyam are excellent managers of the property, they respond quickly, are very friendly and can provide anything you need.

    Ebrahim2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • Margaret's place is is clean, quiet well decorate and perfectly located in a residential neighborhood close to UCB.

    Nicholas2020-01-06T00:00:00Z
  • This is the best airbnb stay we have had by far. We stayed there for a few weeks due to my visit to the university. The place is exactly as described, it is large, spacious, and very comfortable for party of two. The kitchen has everything we need, even two coffee makers (one is a regular drip machine, and one is a French press). Plenty of utensils, plates, pots, mugs, etc. Laundry room is conveniently located in the building, the dryer is free and the washer costs $1.5 a load. The location is also very good: it’s very close to many shops/restaurants/cafes near the university, and about 10 minutes walking distance from the Elmwood shopping area. There is also a whole food market about 15 minutes by walking. There are also quite a few bus stops nearby, and the downtown Berkeley Bart is about 20 minutes away by walking. The host and her two assistants are also very helpful, and answered our questions promptly. I would definitely stay here again if I come back to Berkeley for another visit.

  • Very comfortable and fully equipped apartment. Excellent for long stay. Excellent position.

    Niki2019-07-08T00:00:00Z
  • We were very pleased with the hospitality and the warmth of receiving us. There was not a single item missing. Everything we needed in a seasonal home we could find there. And even more. Well equipped kitchen, comfortable living room and bedroom. Pillows, sheets and towels available. We would certainly recommend!

    Marcia2019-05-26T00:00:00Z
  • Margaret's place was excellent. The location was very good, and the apartment itself was nice. The managing staff was cordial and quick to respond to any questions or concerns. The amenities such as coffee, tea and juice were a nice touch after a long flight. High recommended for anyone who wants access to campus, but also a little distance from the rowdier elements of Berkeley campus life. Elmwood is very accessible and the Rockridge BART can be reached within 10 minutes by bus. Also, everything Margaret explained in the description was accurate, and she was very responsive and informative with regard to any immediate inquiries. All in all, highly recommended.

~~UPDATE 3/13: Gigabit fiber coming soon! Note that our neighbor’s house is undergoing a full renovation. While it’s not always consistent, you may hear construction noises on weekday mornings.~~ Glamour + camping = glamping! - Centrally located to BART, UCB, & restaurants - BART (7 blocks) to SF in 25 minutes - Wifi, linens, towels, coffee, & tea provided - Big ol' yard with chickens - One of two Airbnb spots here, so you might meet some other travelers! It's like a hostel, but clean. ;)
Welcome! Enjoy all the comforts of home in this fabulously restored vintage caravan. Come say hi to the chickens, enjoy coffee and tea in the garden. You'll be close to pretty much everything and BART is 7 blocks away. We look forward to hosting you! The house is on the same property where we live with our 2 small children. We are very family friendly. Come glamp in our little slice of country life. This 1964 Kenskill camper has been fabulously restored and customized so you can play "pretend camp" while enjoying the comforts of home. This is a great spot especially if you've ever been tiny-home-curious. In a previous life, this caravan was the food truck for Katie Cupcake, serving up the delicious treats in Flagstaff, AZ. You're sure to enjoy sweet dreams. ;) We rearranged the interior so it feels much more spacious than the traditional layout. It's really quite nice inside. And yes, there's even a full bathroom with a proper flush toilet, sink, and small separate shower. The stall is short so taller folks need to get creative to shower. Towels and linens provided. Mini kitchen has a working gas range, double sink, microwave and fridge. Coffee and tea provided, plus feel free to gather some eggs for breakfast. Watching "chicken TV" is a relaxing way to enjoy the garden. You may encounter our two kitties, Cowboy and Beebop. Our place is one of those homes that's all front yard, and we positioned this trailer so you can sit at the dinette and enjoy a view of the garden and our silly flock of chickens. Some people ask about safety. We've lived in the East Bay for 20 years, sampling the whole socioeconomic spectrum of neighborhoods. We've felt more at home here in this slice of town that we've felt anywhere else in the Bay Area. Put on your city smarts and you should be A-OK. That being said, there are lots of great places to eat and drink nearby whether you want to walk, bike or drive. Three great new restaurants are nearby: Sideshow (excellent beer garden with delicious dinner options), Cassave Restaurant (delish El Salvadoran grub and a full bar) and Easy Creole (casual, tasty, and fast). Our favorite local spot is Sweet Adeline with delicious pastries and tasty coffee. There's another coffee and sandwich shop, Alchemy Cafe next to Easy Creole. It's straight out of Portlandia. On Tuesdays, there's a farmer's market from 3-7pm just a couple blocks away! Venture a little further and hit up the big Temescal Farmer's market on Sunday mornings. Your hosts are two UCB alums and former co-opers. Lewis is a programmer by day, musician by night. Ginger is a Jill of All Trades, ranging from glassblowing to finance. Jules (age 5) and Pasqual (age 3) are our little greeters. We'll leave you to your own devices, but don't hesitate to ask if you need anything. Thanks for looking and happy travels! ***FAQ*** Q. Is there heat? A. Yes, we provide a space heater that keeps it warm and cozy. Q. Is there hot water? A. Yes, there is a dedicated on-demand water heater for the caravan. Q. If we don't want to share the bed, is there room to put a mat on the ground? A. Kind of, but I wouldn't recommend it. You could fit a mat on the walkway to the bathroom, but then you'd have to step on each other to get around! Q. Do you have luggage storage? A. Sure, we can fit a few pieces of luggage in our supply room. Q. Where do I park? A. Parking is onstreet . If you don't get a spot just outside, you can usually find one on the block. Watch for street sweeping signs (a few hours out of the month). Q. Can I bring an animal? A. No. We need to keep the space allergen-free. Q. What about assistance animals? A. Due to past trauma, dogs of any size are not allowed to enter the property as they pose a health and safety risk with our particular circumstances.
For some reason Airbnb doesn't know how to place us on the map. We're on the same block as Lois the Pie Queen -- a neighborhood fixture and solid greasy spoon diner. Although our neighborhood is not the prettiest, we have a great community and are happy to be raising a family here.

  • Awesome space. I felt like I had stepped into a portal and hopped back to the 70s, then had my soul licked by a child who was born at a Grateful Dead concert or burning man! I loved it. It’s the Barbie doll caravan that I always wanted for my non existent hippie Barbie!

  • Definitely a out-of the-norm experience in Oakland. Chickens, gardens, funky/groovy camper that is both unique and functional. Enjoyed the fact that they accommodated a last minute booking, as well as, an additional day which I booked the following morning. Definitely not your run-of the-mill generic hotel room. This place has personality and both privacy and comfort for a memorable experience that is worthy of sharing.

Rockridge garden cottage. Charming and peaceful cottage with a queen sized pillow top mattress, wifi, full kitchen and a great outdoor space. Centrally located; walking distance to Market Hall, great restaurants, 1 block to BART, cafes and shops.
Nestled in the back of a beautiful garden. Quiet and peaceful retreat in the heart of Rockridge. This is a lovely little cottage where guests can have privacy in an incredibly central location. My cottage has not been remodeled, so keep that in mind when booking. It's not fancy and the bathroom is probably more dorm room than hotel room, but overall it's pretty great.
Great restaurants, cafes, bars, shopping and close to public transportation. Whatever you need is within walking distance!
  • such a wonderful host and very accommodating. thank you very much erin!

    Daryl2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • This a charming small house behind a larger house, with a pleasant garden separating the two. It's obviously been well planned for a comfortable stay for one person or a couple (including chocolate!) and is very conveniently located a short walk to the BART station, Bica Coffee and some lovely little shops (Pegasus Books!) and restaurants. An excellent place to explore the Rockridge neighborhood and beyond.

    Macy2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • Erin's cottage is lovely, it has a rustic charm as well as everything you'd need for a short stay. The location is fantastic for both walking and exploring Oakland as well as traveling in to SF.

  • This cottage is absolutely charming, intimate and in such an awesome central location. Just like the ad says, it is walking distances to pretty anything you need. Cosy, clean, sunny guest room in small downstairs flat with garden access. Spacious, sunny bedroom, large bed, fresh sheets. Simple organic breakfasts and fresh coffee. Historic house with rustic charm and lots of pets.
Stay comfortably in your simple, well-appointed bedroom in my quiet flat in a peaceful neighborhood. I live here, and you will stay as my guest. Very central, convenient location for Oakland/Berkeley/Emeryville; close to freeways I-580, I-880, I-80/Bay Bridge, Hwy 24, and Hwy 13, and BART (Ashby and MacArthur stations.) Local advice freely given. Loaner bicycle available.
The house is located on a Bicycle Boulevard in a quiet, tucked away, family-oriented neighborhood that is undergoing something of a renaissance. Houses are quickly being bought at high price and remodeled by bourgeois newcomers, but something of the old neighborhood remains-- cracked sidewalks, chain-link fencing, and litter are part of the local texture. Take a stroll down the block to see babies and families walking along with workers, families, loiterers, commuters, homeless people, kids at play, teens on bikes, and varied and interesting houses and gardens, all enjoying the sunshine (or fog.) Historic Oakland residential neighborhood with beautiful architecture. The Tuesday Berkeley Farmers' Market is a 3-minute walk down the street. Sweet Adeline is a superior neighborhood bakery. Guests love this delightful hidden neighborhood. NB This is a very typical Oakland neighborhood. Guests may or may not feel comfortable walking alone late at night. Also, the neighborhood is mainly residential and somewhat "off the beaten track" and may be better suited to car/cab/bicycle transportation than walking, although many guests have been very happy to get around by foot.
  • Great location and value with a comfortable bed and room; John was great at communicating beforehand, very flexible and welcoming and all in all was a great place to stay!

I was personally in town more for study and research rather than travel, but the desk was nice. It was a quiet and peaceful place to be. The animals were really cute too.

The house is cute and we loved taking morning runs in the surrounding neighborhoods. Definitely recommend for anyone looking for an affordable and comfortable place in the East Bay.

  • Erin and Esteban’s place was a safe, clean, and comfortable spot for us with our three children. We loved the location close to great shops and restaurants on Solano. Warm and cozy living room especially with the heater on (necessary at the time of year we were there) and lots of tv/movie options available. Comfortable bed (we brought a pack n play that we set up for our little one). The older kids enjoyed the loft and when they weren’t using it we put the ladder on the floor so our toddler wasn’t tempted to climb it. Great communication with hosts and easy to find and access the house. Thanks for a great stay!

  • This is a perfect place to stay in Berkeley-- great location, comfortable space with lots of privacy, and great, friendly host. Would definitely stay here again

    Will2020-02-21T00:00:00Z
  • This spot is a nice, small apartment behind the owner’s house. It’s located close to a lot of shopping and dining which was nice. We didn’t spend a lot of time in the space due to being in town for wedding festivities, but it suited us well as a relaxing space in the midst of our busy schedule, offering a cozy place to sleep, get ready, rest, and even some cooking in the kitchen. Stephen was very hospitable, as well, and communicated well with us.

    Kyle2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • Would definitely stay here again. Cordial hosts and clean, cheerful cottage.

My place is up the hill from award winning restaurants such as Chez Panisse and Cheese Board Pizza, near the original Peet's Coffee, close to UC Berkeley and Greek Theater, about a 10-minute walk from Downtown Berkeley BART station, and just down the hill from the Berkeley Rose Garden for a beautiful view of San Francisco. You’ll love it because of the lovely area and proximity to everything! My place is good for couples, concertgoers, business travelers, and UC Berkeley friends and family.
With a private entrance and bathroom, this studio is en suite to our house, on the ground level. This is important to note, because it is below our living space and next to our garage. We are respectful, but please know that you'll hear footsteps or voices periodically. Although there is no kitchen, it has a nice kitchenette equipped with a mini-refrigerator (for potential leftovers), microwave oven (for heating said leftovers), and Keurig machine (for coffee lovers/needers). If you're concerned about working, the table is adjustable height, and serves as your workstation or table. The bathroom is large, with a corner shower. The closet is gigantic, where you'll find a tower fan, iron and ironing board, luggage rack, and extra blankets. Whether you're here on business or pleasure, this studio has what you need!
We are in the hills of Berkeley, which is important to note. But those hills afford us amazing views of the Bay and the City. Our neighborhood is quiet; just far enough away from the buzz of the streets below to make them walkable, but high enough to enjoy the views. Plus, the neighborhood is filled with homes that take great care of their gardens. All of this makes it very beautiful, throughout the year. Honestly, we're in a great location - it's about a mile to the Downtown Berkeley and the BART station, a little more than a half-mile from the Greek Theater and the UC Berkeley campus, directly up the hill from the infamous Chez Panisse, original Peet's Coffee, and Cheese Board Pizza, and a half-mile down the hill from the Berkeley Rose Garden for an incredible view of the Bay. We're incredibly lucky to have such a beautiful home, and look forward to sharing it with you!
  • Great stay, host very responsive and great location!!

    Adan2020-03-23T00:00:00Z
  • Great little studio on the North side of campus. The hosts were very responsive to messages. Street parking was available, but be advised the sign posted says it's just 2 hr until 7PM. Clean room and bathroom with a large TV. Thoughtful touches like coffee, tea and oatmeal were provided. Will be staying here again!

An elegant remodeled apartment – quite spacious compared with many studio apartments. It will comfortably accommodate 1 or 2 people. Walk to campus in 12 minutes. Many amenities within 10-15 minutes’ walk on Telegraph and College Avenues.
    • This renovated studio apartment is on the second floor of a beautiful 1911 apartment building. • Tastefully furnished and artistically decorated. • Queen-size chest bed with storage drawers underneath. • Large and well-equipped eat-in kitchen, with a dishwasher • Desk/workspace in an alcove off the kitchen • Modern tiled bathroom with step-in shower and dramatic art tile floor. • Wi-fi & flat-screen TV are included • Washers & dryers a short distance away through the back door The Building A bit of history: Eric Lindblom from Sweden came to the US in the late 1880s and was one of the “Three Lucky Swedes” who discovered gold in the Nome district of Alaska. He invested the proceeds in real estate (among other things), including the Claremont Hotel – and his former wife had this building built in 1911! See photo of the building as it was 100 years ago! The Neighborhood The studio is in the Elmwood residential district, 2 blocks from Telegraph Avenue, 1 block from College Avenue, very close to public transport. The location has a walk score of 94 which classifies it as a “Walker’s Paradise”! Leave your car behind! You can rent a car on an as-needed basis from Zipcar or City Car Share locations very close by. •Monthly discounts (for stays of 28 days or more) •The accommodation charge includes cleaning and stocking with essential supplies before you move in. There is no separate cleaning fee. The fine print (otherwise known as house rules): • Minimum stay 14 days. • Strictly no smoking anywhere in the apartment or elsewhere on the property! A Berkeley City ordinance prohibits smoking in apartments and common areas of multi-unit dwellings. •No parties or loud noise. This is a generally quiet residential neighborhood, and we want to keep it that way. Quiet time is after 10 PM and before 7:30 AM. •Sorry, no pets. •Please remove your outdoor shoes and wear soft shoes or slippers inside the apartment. Since the apartment has wood floors, your downstairs neighbors will appreciate it. •For residential purposes only (home office OK).
  • There should be a select category for superhosts on Air BnB that remained compassionate and understanding during the COVID-19 crisis. Margaret is definitely on that list. I had to cut my intended 3-month stay short because of the COVID-19 outbreak, and Margaret did the upright thing by refunding the amount for the three weeks despite this being out of pocket. Her actions are truly outstanding, and it is because of such acts of kindness that I would highly recommend her apartment for anyone traveling to Berkeley. All of this was done in less than 48 hours as I had to re-schedule flights to head home within a moment's notice. You know you will be in safe hands at her home. I felt safe and comfortable throughout my entire stay there. Margaret and her manager Bruk clearly care for their guests and would go out of the way to ensure you feel at home and safe during your stay there. Every time I required something, Bruk would promptly respond and took care of it. Bruk is very pleasant, and you can always count on her if you end up in an emergency. Her husband also kindly ensured that flowers and chocolates that were delivered on the wrong side of the building by my husband reached my door fresh. Margaret's Air BnB is also fully furnished so if you are planning for a long-term stay, this might be an excellent place for you. The sheets were new and clean, flowers were placed in the apartment when I first came, and I could make fresh coffee in the morning with a lovely packet of Pete's coffee left for me. The location was ideal as well. I was able to get around Berkeley on foot easily. The grocery stores are nearby and my office on campus at Berkeley was just a 6-minute walk away, accurately mentioned to me by Margaret before me getting there. All in all, if I came back to Berkeley in the future, Margaret's Air BnB will always be my first choice. I highly recommend her place to anyone that might be traveling alone as you know that Margaret and Bruk will ensure you are always well looked after throughout your stay.

  • We've spent a great time in this studio! The studio is safe and close to the campus. Burk and Ben were welcoming and very responsive when we have problems requests. I will still book this studio if I will come here again.

  • Margaret was a lovely host and very thoughtful. She went out of her way to accommodate my needs, including being flexible with check time as I was flying in early in the morning. Communication with her was very pleasant, and the place is just what I wanted. A great find for short term stays in Berkeley.

  • I had an amazing stay at Margaret's! The studio is super clean and beautiful with plenty of space and a wonderful kitchen. The house is ideally located a few blocks away from Cal campus. Bruke and her husband are doing a great job and I felt like home since the very first minute. I will come back for sure!

  • This really is an amazing spot - the location is central, the house is beautiful both inside and out, and the amenities are perfect (kitchen, free laundry, bike storage area). Bruk and Binyam manage the house and are incredibly friendly, responsive and accommodating with any issues (including in my case needing to extend my stay for a night and have a late check-out). Pretty much everything was perfect, would highly recommend!

Small cottage in the heart of the Elmwood neighborhood. Walk score: 91. Tree-lined streets, great food, Berkeley-vibes abound. Eat-in kitchenette, sunny porch, cozy living space.
Well-loved, cozy space. The house was built in 1906 and much of the period detail has survived over the years.
The neighborhood is friendly, safe, and pretty; a long growing season makes for lovely gardens. Happily, you'll be able to walk to the post office, library, cafes, bakeries, and a wonderful grocery store.
  • This is a terrific place to stay. Quiet. Lovely street near good food, coffee, theatres and close enough to the BART.

Small, bright 1 bedroom apartment located on the first floor , at the back of the house .It has its own private entrance, on the side of the house.
This thoughtfully organized and quaint apartment is perfect for anyone who would like to have a place to retreat to from the busy downtown area of Berkeley. I, the Grandma in the listing name, rent it out when I am on the East Coast. The house is conveniently located 4 blocks from the North Berkeley BART station and 2 blocks from Trader Joe's. There is a park nearby to sit outside and relax . This is an old shingled house that was divided up into apartments, you may hear some muffled sounds and footsteps from neighboring apartments, and dogs barking from the nearby dog park. You'll have everything you need for your retreat. The kitchen is fully equipped, including your choice of coffee or tea in the morning. The bathroom supplies are constantly replenished, and you have access to books , a desk overlooking the back yard, an old school receiver, and a wall mounted TV.

  • Cozy apartment, nestled in the side of beautiful two story gem, located in the quant hills of North Berkeley. This is perfect for a single person and/or with a little compromise and teamwork can be accommodating for even a family of 5 (my case). Fully equipped with all the essentials, there’s no need for a toaster with the best bakeries in Berkeley right around the corner. The owner Jordan was very polite, answered questions promptly and never complained (even though we know the kids were loud at times). I’d definitely stay here again, thanks Jordan.

Worn but lovely and spacious craftsman home, with a fireplace and a large backyard deck, the house is within a couple blocks of a butcher, bakery (alas, no candlestick maker), ice cream shop, bar, supermarket, cafes, restaurants and boutiques. It's a 10 minute walk to BART, which takes 20 minutes into SF. UC Berkeley is less than a half hour walk away. I enjoy hosting and am eager to help. You have access to a bicycle and helmet, and you can exercise on the elliptical and the stationary bike.
There are nice features, befitting a Craftsman. There's a sizable back deck, working fireplace, in-laid cabinets and breakfast nook. It's a fairly large but older home, so it's not well insulated and there's no working furnace or air conditioning, so house temperatures can vary. Space heaters are provided for the bedroom and common areas. The sunny 2nd floor bedroom with a large window area is 8.5' x 12' (2.6m x 3.65m) and contains a queen-sized bed, area rug, dresser, space heater, desk and nightlamp on the bedside dresser. There is a heated mattress pad with controls .
Rockridge is a very walkable and leafy neighborhood filled with strollers and places to eat, drink and shop. There are spas and salons within blocks. Rockridge doesn't just have to serve as a base from which you can explore the Bay, it is a destination in and of itself. Any quick search will yield many things to do in the area and I'm happy to provide guidance in that regard. Immediately to the west you find the hipster haven Temescal and just to the north you find similarly comfortable Berkeley neighborhood Elmwood. UC Berkeley and hill hiking is also close by.
  • I was in town for just the night, but David's place was conveniently located to a lot of things (Safeway, bagel shop, coffee shop, bars, etc.). It is located just shy of a larger street where there's more traffic, so it is nice and quiet. The house had other rooms that you can stay in so it was nice and cozy. Kitchen and bathroom are large without feeling cramped at all. The room has its own heater and a nice large window for natural light. What a really enjoyed was the walking proximity to a lot of places! Recommend!

    Anthony2020-01-25T00:00:00Z
  • The room is very comfortable (specially the bed!) and 10 min walk to the Bart station and College street, where you can find many shops, restaurants and supermarkets. David was a wonderful host and to communicate with him was quick and easy. I would comme back to his appartement for a short stay in Oakland/Berkeley without hesitate.

    Alex2020-01-06T00:00:00Z
  • David was a very accommodating host. When the room I reserved was double-booked, he quickly solved the issue by letting me know I could stay in another room and gave a small refund. His house was well-equipped with anything you might need for a short or long-term stay, including food to make for breakfast! David rents out several rooms in the house, which didn't bother me, but it's something to be aware of.
