Kid-friendly holiday rentals in Orkney

Riff Cottage was by far the best holiday rental we have ever stayed in - quiet, warm, comfortable, spacious, clean, well equipped and tastefully decorated. There are wonderful views to the farmyard and the firth and hills beyond. Greig and Lesley were the perfect hosts, quickly responsive when we needed help, friendly when we met them around the farm but otherwise unobtrusive. The location is perfect for accessing the nearby neolithic sites and nature reserves and the shop is Finstown is a short drive away. We much appreciated the ample welcome pack. We thoroughly recommend a stay at Riff Cottage.

Nice place, Great view across the bay, Great host, Place was very clean and tidy and would certainly recommend. Plenty of parking space. We certainly had a lovely week at this property.

Lounge/kitchen and bathroom downstairs, double bedroom upstairs, neat small garden and deck. Bright and airy, just like in the photos. Admirably clean throughout. Comfortable bed. Welcoming selection of books and games, also nice welcome pack of goodies. All kitchen staples were there, so no need to run to the shops for salt or Fairy liquid! The weather forecast was iffy, so Cathy provided logs and kindling for the log burner. It turned out that they were not needed: the heat pump did its job. We loved the cottage and St Margaret’s Hope, a small sleepy village near the ferry terminal. The cottage might not be suitable for more elderly guests as the stairs up to the bedroom are quite steep. The village might be too small and sleepy for others. Top marks for us though.

This was a great place to stay in Kirkwall. Accommodation was superb and was within easy walking distance of town centre. Would definitely stay there again. Parking was great to have as well

Large family home, very comfortable and great location for peaceful and beautiful surroundings while only being 10 minutes away from town. Great base for exploring the island.

There aren’t enough words in English or Gaelic to describe how much myself and my friend/support worker LOVED .. staying @Brough Farm @ South Ronaldsay … i Love rural isolation , waterways, wild walks , seabirds and cows, stone walls and buildings ✅✅✅✅✅✅, not necessarily in that order … the capacity to self cater , with resources easily sourced from Stromness and Kirkwall , including fresh sourced fish , lamb , beef etc … have a bath after a big days walking and sleep in comfy beds , obviously adds to the bliss .. and then the cherry on the cake of our 10 night stay … was of course our timing was perfect for the Orkney Folk festival … which was sublime … Two Australians … left very sad .. from ‘our’ Orkney Island home … Mel and Graham were the bestest hosts .. and I’m deeply grateful for all of Grahams patience with sharing his farming knowledge about the darling cows and calf’s .

A fabulous holiday house,very clean, warm, comfortable and utterly amazing views. The host,Helen, was very welcoming and friendly. Cannot recommend it enough. Can't wait to return.

The apartment is a gem. So clean, comfortable, well equipped and in a great location. Magical views out to sea . Really comfortable bed. Great communication from Yuka with really helpful local info and directions. Will definately be back.

The flat is perfect for a visit to Kirkwall . The location means you can walk everywhere. It was clean comfortable and warm. Having the washing machine was very useful and access to a washing line outside also. Inspite of the central location we found it very quiet.

If you visit Orkney do yourself a favour and stay at this property. Hosts are welcoming and the property has everything you need for a comfortable stay. This is a first class option in Kirkwall, walkable distance to bus stop, ferry, shops and restaurants/cafes.

The flat is a little gem with lots of little added things to make it pretty: pictures, photos, nice curtains etc. When we arrived the electric fire and classic FM were on. A special touch. Super quiet. The view is amazing and it is only 10 minutes walk to Stromness. Super easy to access by car and then travel into the island. Highly recommend.

A great location close to the ferry terminal which was ideal! Very picturesque location with amazing views over the bay and a couple of shops and restaurant in walking distance. The flat was exactly as expected from the description and was perfect for us 🙂

The Lookout had everything we needed and more. It was spotlessly clean, beautifully decorated and full extra little touches: Karen really has thought of everything. The location is ideal for exploring Kirkwall and beyond, and the building itself has a fascinating history. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend staying at Northlight Apartments.

Lovely location right where the action is. Kitchenette was functional and we were able to do some cooking. Bedroom had a window which was bright but Tara was quick to get it taped up so that the room was nice and dark for sleep (really bright in summer!). Very helpful in helping us get last min car rental too. Thanks for a very memorable stay in the Orkneys!

The rental was very centrally located in Kirkwall. Rebecca corresponded with us right from the booking and gave us useful information. She was available if we needed any questions answered throughout our stay. The apartment is very spacious for two people and well furnished and equipped. We were very comfortable and felt at home there. While it is unlikely we will make the long trip to Orkney again, if we did we would definitely stay there.

Fantastic! I’ve stayed in a lot of different types of accommodation over the years but this was the best. Immaculate in every way and very thoughtfully presented. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend or go back to this property. Ten minute walk to the town centre. Friendly host next door but didn’t intrude. You won’t be disappointed!

Leona's place was spacious and comfortable, very thoughtfully set up for travelers. Kitchen was equipped (we really do use the kitchen when we travel) and even had a few spices which was nice. Great view from kitchen and deck across the Loch of Stenness to see from afar the Ring of Brodgar standing stones. The location! Really great, walkably close to a few historic sites -- standing stones and ring of brodgar and the maeshowe cairn. And also next to a small supplies shop which was handy. And best of all -- a bus stop that runs to Stromness and to Kirkwall about every hour. Can also bus to some of the main sites. Leona met us and got us settled in, was a great stay. Thanks!

Great apartment. Very clean and well appointed. Great location in that you were very close to everything the only downside was that on the Saturday night the noise from the young folk waiting for taxis was horrendous. Between 12-2 am none of us could sleep and that was with the windows shut and earplugs in . But for the noise on the Saturday night I would have scored higher.

Jenny’s place is like home from home. Jenny met us on arrival to let us in and explain where everything we might need was located. The apartment is cosy, lovely original decor with everything we could possibly need in the kitchen and bathroom. If we had any queries after our arrival they were very quick to respond via the Airbnb app. The icing on the cake for us was that they allowed us to charge our electric vehicle when required using their charger. We also really appreciated the fact that Jenny had provided tea, coffee, milk, butter, local biscuits and home made marmalade all of which made us feel very welcome. Look out for the red folder too, full of really useful information and suggestions. We will definitely return to beautiful Orkney in the near future.

Good flat in the centre of Kirkwall and John is a helpful, friendly host

This apartment was in a perfect location and very quiet. The building has history which we always enjoy finding out about. We spent a beautiful 8 nights on Orkney. We didn’t have a car and it was easy to get around using tours, public transportation or taxis.

We enjoyed our stay. The apartment was clean and very comfortable, well kitted, spacious. Great location!

Perfect location and a comfortable sitting area for relaxing after a day of exploring.
