The Alabama was first established as a hotel in 1867. The building has undergone a few changes since then but was re-established as a boutique style art hotel in 2013.The hotel is owned and operated by Tassie locals with emphasis on creating an enjoyable, affordable and artistic space suitable for world travellers and inter state visitors alike. The Alabama offers something much more interesting than your standard hotel or motel because it is unique, sincere,a little quirky and a whole lot special.

CHECK IN: Is after 2 pm at reception. Our reception closes at 9 pm so please advise if you will be later than this.

SHARED BATHROOMS: The bathrooms are down the hall from the rooms and shared with other guests. It is important to note there are no rooms with private bathrooms. If this is not your style, we understand, but please be aware of this before staying and/or reviewing. We have always found our guests to be very respectful of one another and the shared space.

NO PARKING: Our inner city location means we have no on-site parking. Nearby parking information and rates can be found on the getting here page of our website.

STAIRS: Unfortunately our building does not have an elevator and there are stairs to walk up.

WIFI: We have good quality free wifi with a large individual data limit per device, there are no televisions.

NO FREE COFFEE/TEA: Tassie teas and locally roasted barista coffee is available to purchase from the guest lounge but we do not have those items, or kettles in the rooms.

NO KITCHEN: There are no cooking facilities at the hotel. Hobart is heaven for good food and produce, and our staff know all the top spots so we can point you in the right direction for the best start to your day.

THE BAR/LOUNGE/DECK

The Alabama’s small bar, lounge area and gorgeous plant filled balcony is available for the general public and guest use between 8am-9pm daily (times may sometimes vary depending on seasons).
We have excellent coffee and teas available for purchase, as well as a wide selection of local and imported beer, wines and spirits. The bar is perfect for a drink before heading out for a meal at one of the many excellent Hobart eateries nearby.

Neighbourhood highlights

Hobart is a small, beautiful city teeming with artists, musicians, creative types and other interesting people. Perched on the edge of the Derwent River, Hobart is hot property, and there has never been a better time to visit.

HERE ARE A FEW REASONS WHY:

THE MARKETS: we know you’ve likely got Salamanca on your radar for a Saturday morning, but don’t miss Farm Gate Market on a Sunday morning, and the monthly art and craft markets on around the traps.
THE GALLERIES: MONA’s a given, but there’s so much more to explore. Check the state collections at TMAG, Salamanca Arts Centre when you’re done with the markets, and many more little galleries dotted around the city.
THE MOUNTAIN: Hobart lives in the shadow of Mt Wellington and that’s just how we like it. Getting up there is easy if you have a hire car, a little trickier without one (it’s a national park, so no public transport goes through it). Ask us for tips on getting up there, and take your coat with you—it’s regularly cold and/or windy up there.
FOOD AND BOOZE: Hobart and it's surrounds are utter foodie paradise. Tassie fresh produce is unbeatable (in our humble opinions) and so are the Alabama staff’s fresh opinions. Chat to us about our newest finds and current favourites. We endeavour to keep plenty of Tasmanian drinks in stock at the Alabama bar for you to sample—have you tried a Tassie beer? Wine? Cider? Whisky? Gin? Vodka? They all exist and they’re all delicious.
THE FESTIVALS: something to celebrate for every season! Summer festivals are the most popular (no surprises there) but there’s something happening at all times of the year, whether it be for food, or music, or drinks, or wooden boats… the list goes on.
THE DAY TRIPS: we don’t recommend a hire car while you’re staying in Hobart (no onsite parking!) but if you do have one, we’ve got suggestions for you. Try the Huon valley, the Tasman peninsula, Bruny island, Mt Field, or the Coal River valley… just for a start. (Freycinet and Cradle mountain are also amazing but need more than a day trip or you’ll be pooped!)
THE NEIGHBOURS: CBD life is ballin’ but make sure you check out the other suburbs that make up inner Hobart: North Hobart, Salamanca, Battery Point and Sandy Bay are all worth touring through for eating, drinking, sight-seeing and fun times.
THE WATER: mountains to the left of you, water to the right, here you are—stuck in the middle at the Alabama. Nothing like sitting waterside with some fish and chips on a beautiful sunny day, or you could get out onto the water via kayak, adventure boat or tall ship.
THE ALABAMA: toot toot! What’s that sound? Our own horn? Here at the Alabama we love our guests, we love Hobart and we love Tasmania. Come share the love.

Hey there beautiful people of the world!

My good friend Jimmy & I took over The Alabama Hotel in 2019.
It is a well established Boutique Arts Hotel & we consider ourselves lucky to have stepped in on something so perfectly wonderful.

We have a gorgeous team behind us: Phob, Celeste, Ella & Dean. Who, like us, are big Tassie advocates.
We are all here to help, guide & ensure that you enjoy your stay with us in our fabulous city.

Big love,
Em
