All about Coolangatta
Coolangatta is a coastal suburb at the Southern edge of Queensland’s Gold Coast, right on the border with New South Wales. Less than a two-hour drive from Brisbane and 40 minutes from the famous Surfers Paradise, Coolangatta is recognised worldwide for its laid-back beaches and surfing hotspots. It’s home to Greenmount Beach, the site of the oldest surf club in Queensland, and Snapper Rocks — the starting point of the Superbank, a surfing bank formed to create ideal surfing conditions. It’s no wonder many of Australia’s biggest surfing competitions take place here.
From Coolangatta, there’s a spectacular walking trail that wraps around Greenmount Hill connecting Greenmount Beach to Rainbow Bay. From there, you can head up the hill to Point Danger, where you can put one foot down in Queensland and the other in New South Wales. The views at the Point Danger lookout are stunning, and it is also a great place to spot a whale during migration season.
What are the top things to do in Coolangatta?
Coolangatta Beach
Coolangatta is an iconic Australian beach that’s often featured in movies and television series, primarily because of the incredible views of Surfers Paradise, especially at sunset. The beach is quieter than some others on the Gold Coast, offering a more relaxed atmosphere. Lifeguards usually patrol the beach, so it’s a good spot for swimmers of all abilities. While you’re here, grab some local fish and chips while you enjoy the views.
Cycle to Currumbin
You can hire a bike in town and ride the eight-kilometre route from Coolangatta to Currumbin. The bike path sticks close to the ocean’s edge for most of the way, offering pretty panoramas and places to stop. The relatively flat track makes for an easy ride, and you’ll pass the lovely Kirra Beach, which has a strip of shops and ocean-view cafes. You can also take this scenic path on foot.
Walk on Water walking track
Just over the border into Coolangatta’s twin town of Tweed Heads, this short trail showcases wild bushland and mangroves, along with Aboriginal cultural heritage. There is a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk through eucalypt forests, swamp forests, and other woodlands along the Tweed River. You can learn about native plants and local wildlife — look out for the royal spoonbill — while finding out more about the Minjungbal people. You’ll also come across Bora Ring, a sacred Aboriginal site that the Minjungbal people revere as a link to their ancestors.
