  • Potter's wheel experience
Potter's wheel experience For the time being, we're keeping class sizes to a minimum of x4 participants per instructor. We're blessed with ample studio space and will social distance participants accordingly. On arrival you'll be offered a warm (socially distanced!) welcome from either Jon or his wife and fellow maker Sarah. Following an easy to follow, five step potter's wheel demonstration, you'll each take a turn to throw one or two pots on the wheel. Needless to say, the activity makes for a fab spectator sport so you'll have great fun watching each other wrestling the spinning mud! Your professional potter will be with you, at a safe distance for the whole of your experience, gently guiding you through the five easy steps to success. The whole experience lasts 1.5 hrs and if you are fortunate enough to have produced x2 pots, you'll be asked to choose your favourite to be fired and glazed. (If you cant decide, the extra pot can be purchased at 1/2 price) You wont be able to take your creation away on the day, it will need to dry thoroughly before it goes in the kiln. Your pot will be fired twice, glazed and available for collection from the Pottery approx. 4-6 weeks later. P+P can be arranged at £5 per pot (UK)

  • Have a go on a potters wheel
I specialise in slipware pottery thrown on a potters wheel (of which there are 4). The pots are decorated with the coloured liquid clay (slip) that provides a wonderful fluid palette to create a wide range of decorative styles. The great benefit of this course is that by using slips we are able to make and decorate the pots in the same lesson as the pots are decorated in their raw, unfired state. You therefore don't need to return to decorate the pots at another lesson, unless you want to of course! The one-off lesson is suitable for adult absolute beginners as well as those revisiting skills that may have got rusty. If you have a particular project you want to try out (e.g. flower pot, mug, jug) then we will discuss how you can achieve that in the time available but feel free to let me know beforehand with ideas / pictures. Pottery is a very broad subject and it can sometimes be difficult to know where to start, but if you just want to “have a go at pottery” then we can generally fit in a go at throwing some pots of different styles / forms. The aim will be to have made at least one decorated pot you can either take home (in raw clay state) at the end of the lesson or wait for it to be fired (approx. 3 weeks) for collection or posted at cost. Other things to note Clay can be a messy business! I have aprons and towels but you may want to consider the following: • Clothes - the oldest you have. We’ll be using earthenware clay which is quite unforgiving on clothing. • Nails - best if cut but not a real issue.

  • Pottery & glass fusing taster course
Other dates and times available on request. In this half-day class you will have 1.5 hours on a pottery wheel (with a wheel each) with tuition from Chris to help you throw and decorate a few bowls each. In the other half of the experience you will have 1.5 hours of glass fusing taster class with Sarah in which you will create a few pieces of glass eg: jewellery, coasters, sun-catchers, Xmas tree decorations. In both pottery and glass, your pieces will then be fired in the kilns after the experience has finished - you can arrange collection or postage (if in UK) when pieces are ready. We are quite flexible on dates and times for classes so please ask if you'd like to schedule a different date. We also run whole-day classes and individual glass or pottery classes too - many options available. Other things to note Wear appropriate clothing for getting a bit messy in pottery. We do provide aprons but you might get a bit of clay on you.

  • Potter's wheel one day course
The workshop starts at 10am. After introductions we'll show you how it's done by demonstrating the 5 steps to making a pot on the potter's wheel. Then it's time to 'saddle up'! (everybody has a wheel to themselves) As a group, step by step, we'll all progress together through the pot throwing process. After two or three goes together, you'll have got the hang of things. You'll then be encouraged to develop at your own pace with individual tutoring as and when required. We break for lunch around 1pm. (Please bring a packed lunch) Although we rest for an hour, you are more than welcome to take a shorter break and get back to the wheels for some untutored practice. In the afternoon there are further demonstrations after which you will work larger lumps of clay, make bigger pots and explore different shapes and forms. At the end of the workshop and once your wheel has been cleaned, you'll select your favourite two or three pieces, depending on size, to be fired and glazed. (Extra pots can be fired at cost – £6 per 250g payable on the day) The session ends at 4pm. Your creations will be shipped right to your door, arriving approx. one month later (to one address in the UK) ready to take pride of place in your home. Other things to note Although you are required to bring an apron, it's worth considering your clothing and foot-ware. There is a certain degree of splashing and splattering so dark colours are easier to wash.
