Your guide to Waratah Bay
All About Waratah Bay
Sitting on the northern end of the bay that shares its name, Waratah Bay is a quiet coastal town in Victoria’s Gippsland region showcasing long expanses of sandy coastline with a backdrop of mountain peaks and famous Wilsons Promontory National Park in the distance. The town is located just minutes away from many popular Gippsland destinations like Sandy Point, Shallow Inlet, Agnes Fall, and Iluka Court — where you can enjoy panoramic views over the bay.
Waratah Bay provides a great base to explore Wilsons Promontory National Park, with its stunning coastal scenery, pristine wilderness, and abundance of native wildlife. The Prom, locals call it, has a lot to discover, from Lilly Pilly Gully, the spectacular Tidal Lookout, and the most famous beach in the region, Squeaky Beach. The popular Tidal River to Squeaky Beach walk takes around 50 minutes one way and offers some of the most spectacular views in the region, with the reward of walking on Squeaky Beach at the end.
The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Waratah Bay
Spring and early autumn are pleasant times in Waratah Bay, when the days are mostly warm and sunny, and the nights are mild. In March, The Prom Coastal festival takes place in towns all over the region, celebrating the arts and fine food of Wilsons Promontory and its surroundings with live performances, music, exhibitions, markets, and more. Summer in the region will generally offer warm days and nights to enjoy outdoor activities and the beaches in the area. Just be aware that the weather can be changeable in this part of the world, even in summer — so it’s a good idea to pack a coat, along with a hat and sunscreen. Whenever you decide to visit, you’ll find a great range of Waratah Bay accommodations to suit your taste.
Top things to do in Waratah Bay
Cape Liptrap Coastal Park
Stretching along the coast from the sheltered Waratah Bay to the sand barrier of Point Smythe, Cape Liptrap Coastal Park is full of beautiful scenery, featuring white sandy beaches, banksia woodland, limestone cliffs plunging into the ocean, and amazing views across the bay to Wilsons Promontory. The easy, self-guided walk takes in the natural scenery, and the grand old lighthouse built in 1913 still operates today.
Agnes Falls
You can drive around 30 minutes to the beautiful Agnes Falls — the highest single span falls in Victoria. From the car park, it’s an easy 200-metre stretch to a viewing area overlooking the falls, with seating areas to enjoy the spectacular view of the water and the gorge. The Agnes Falls Scenic Reserve is home to an abundance of birdlife, including the grey fantail. Be sure to listen for the distinctive calls of the laughing kookaburra and crimson rosella.
Squeaky Beach
Wander along the famous white sand and clear waters of Squeaky Beach — one of Wilsons Promontory's most iconic beaches. The rounded grains of quartz in the sand make a squeaking sound when you walk, giving this famous local beach its name. If you’re feeling adventurous, head to the northern end of the beach and explore the maze of large granite boulders, contrasting with the clear blue waters to create an orange glow, which is even more spectacular at sunset.
