Duckcottage: quaint stone cottage

Duckcottage is a five room stone settlers cottage built in 1853 on five acres of bushland at Second Valley. The property is now a refuge for wildlife so it is NOT suitable for dogs or cats. We call it 'duck' cottage because of the height of the doorways. It has been lovingly restored, and the habitat for birds and native animals has been established through revegetation. The property is secluded (there are no neighbours in sight) but it is a short drive to the beach.

Kayakers come here to explore hidden caves along the coastline while anglers fish off the jetty for squid. The area is a draw for snorkelers and scuba divers who arrive from all over the world to discover the hard-to-spot leafy seadragon, which can only be found in the waters of South Australia.

Its proximity to Kangaroo Island’s famous wildlife reserves and rock formations means that many visitors use accommodations in Second Valley as a rest stop before continuing on their journey. Epicureans are also well served by the McLaren Vale wine region less than an hour’s drive away.
