Your guide to Woodgate

All About Woodgate

Set along a 15-kilometre stretch of golden sand, Woodgate is a small coastal community boasting vivid waters and unique wildlife that’s also a launching off point for the Burrum Coast National Park and Bingera National Park. It’s located in the Bundaberg Region of Queensland, about four hours north of Brisbane.

Seaside homes dot the esplanade along Woodgate Beach, an unblemished length of shore that feels endless in scope. A couple depots, cafes, and eateries are speckled throughout the town, but the area feels fairly remote — the closest supermarket is a half-hour’s drive away.

To the north of Woodgate, just past Theodolite Creek, beach camping areas in Burrum Coast National Park provide the opportunity to sleep under the stars just steps from the waves. A short drive inland allows you to explore the unique wetlands of Bingera National Park, which features hiking, camping, and wildlife viewing opportunities.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Woodgate

Woodgate and its surrounding parks are a year-round destination, but they’re particularly popular in spring and summer, when the temperatures range between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius. The area’s subtropical climate means that winters stay somewhat mild and are great for hiking. During the first weekend of October (October Long Weekend), Woodgate Arts in Spring Weekend offers live music performances on Saturday, a garden walk on Sunday, and a market with more than 100 art and craft vendors on Monday. Another local draw is Woodgate’s Australia Day festivities, which feature breakfast at the Community Hall, live entertainment, and an awards ceremony.

Top things to do in Woodgate

Burrum Coast National Park

Drawing a range of serious backpackers, day-hikers, and campers, Burrum Coast National Park has a variety of terrain to explore. As the largest protected coastal plains in the region, the park comprises just over 26,000 hectares of wetland and forest. Hike amongst the tea trees and coastal plains along the Bird Hide walk trail and try to spot some of the park’s waterbirds, or camp on the beach at the Kinkuna Section bush campground.

Kayaking or paddleboarding

Experience Woodgate’s tranquil waters by board or boat. There are a couple local businesses that rent stand-up paddleboards, as well as kayaks, which are great for exploring Theodolite Creek’s mangrove-lined banks. Afterwards, settle down at a nearby picnic area for lunch.

Woodgate Beach

Whether you’re looking for solitude or a day of family fun, Woodgate Beach offers a world of calm with its sweeping views, sandy shores, and transparent waters. Picnic areas, green spaces, and an esplanade offer a range of ways to relax along this quiet stretch of sand.
