Places to stay in Powburn
***We are monitoring the Covid-19 situation and hope to open more dates soon*** Stay in a 20m2 geodesic dome in a secluded location in rural Northumberland. With a wood fired hot tub, fire pit, and deck with beautiful views of the pond and surrounding trees, it's a perfect spot to relax, unwind and get back to nature. The site is completely off grid - water in containers, solar power, and composting toilet. We believe this makes the site special, offering a unique back-to-basics experience.
Our ethos is to provide a simple but comfortable, tranquil space to 'unplug' from the modern world, with a minimal impact on the surrounding nature so that it can be enjoyed. Please read our description fully before booking to ensure that our dome and site is perfect for you. Satori dome is located on a working farm alongside a large pond. Spend your time watching wild ducks and swans through the panoramic bay window, or explore North Northumeberland before heading back to your site for a soak in the outdoor Japanese soaking tub, whilst star gazing from the deck. Our dome is set up for 2 people with a double bed and Eve© memory foam mattress (bedding is provided.) LED battery fairy lights and lanterns provide mood lighting inside and outside the dome at night, and logs are provided for the wood burning stove and fire to keep you cosy when it is cold outside. Outside on the deck is a gas BBQ for cooking and inside there is a worktop and sink set up for prepping simple meals and washing up dishes (plates, cutlery and utensils provided.) A camp stove and kettle is also provided if you wish to boil water for teas and coffee. A leisure battery powers a small 24 Litre electric cool box to keep food items cool. The battery also has a USB port to charge your devices. Our simple off-grid sink is setup with a 25 litre container of fresh spring water and hand pump tap for washing up. Your outdoor hot tub will be filled with fresh spring water for your arrival. It can be used 2-3 times and takes 2-4 hours to heat up (depending on the weather/season), and will usually stay warm overnight. Please note that in keeping with our ethos of having a low impact on the surrounding nature, soaps are NOT allowed to be used in the tub because of the harm they could cause to the aquatic life of the pond when the tub is drained. We do not (yet) have a shower at the dome, for most people this is not a problem as the hot tub water is clean and does not contain any chemicals, and makes you feel fresh afterwards. The Eco friendly composting toilet is set back from the dome. Whilst it is basic, please be assured that it is both clean and civilised :)
The site is rural (no postcode and the closest neighbours are sheep), but is not far from a main road with easy access to the market towns Wooler (10 mins), Alnwick (20 mins) and Berwick-upon-Tweed (30 mins), as well as the stunning coast (40 mins). There are plenty of local pubs and shops within an approximate 10 minute drive. The location is great for those seeking to explore Chillingham Castle, The Cheviot hills, Ingram Valley, Bamburgh Beach and many other spectacular locations.
  • Go for it! Love what has been created here x

  • We had such a lovely couple of days here! It was easy to find with the directions given, the dome was super clean and we had the most relaxing couple of days. Would highly recommend Hugh & Liz's place and we would love to come back in the summer.

    Jemma2020-03-12T00:00:00Z
  • I booked this stay for my partner's 30th birthday weekend and I can honestly say it did not disappoint. From start to finish the entire stay was perfect. The directions were so simple to follow, the drive alone was so scenic and beautiful. When we arrived we were amazed at how secluded the pod was and how peaceful and calming the environment was. The entire place was immaculate and had amazing touches such as mood lighting, playing cards etc. More than enough logs for the tub stove, log burner and campfire. Tub was absolutely incredible after a long day out. I would 1000% book up to stop here again. Thank you so much for having us.

  • Really lovely place to stay- bigger in person as well. Would recommend

    Kayleigh2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • Wow! Wow! Wow! This place does everything you think it would do and more. My wife and I spent 3 nights in the Dome and it felt like we had gone away for weeks! Hugh and Liz have a Gem of a location. The dome is so well situated and equipped that it is so easy to relax and enjoy the nature around you! The sounds of nature are like a sleeping drug for the soul. We did a day trip to Edinburgh which was as little as an hour and a half away, I mean hello... I recommend this place big time for people who just want things to slow down a little and get refreshed. Thank you for your great hospitality Hugh and Liz!

    Corbin2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • Great place, bigger on the inside than it looks from the outside. Complete isolation and a great view of the lake. Wood burning fire for inside and for the hot tub - plenty of logs provided. The bed is comfortable and the utilities do a basic job well. If you're into this sort of thing, this is just right.

    Ben2020-02-27T00:00:00Z
  • Simply a wonderful experience, so peaceful and relaxing. The dome and its location are stunning, even in the middle of February! Using the hot tub under the blackest starry sky I’ve ever seen was blissful. I was worried about the toilet, but it was clean and very hygienic. It took us mire like 5 hours to heat up the tub, but only because we were being a little too cautious. Definitely leave the ash pan open a little on the hot tub stove to get the fire roaring and I’m sure it could be done in 3 hours. We left the curtains open to watch for shooting stars; just wonderful. We will stay there again in the summer or autumn to experience better weather, but this did not detract from a wonderful break.

    Michelle2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • What a fantastic place to get away and switch off from everything, loved all the extra touches and the setting of the dome is amazing. To be able to sit in a hot tub and star gaze on a cold February night was brilliant ☺️

A lovely stone built cottage in the small village of Powburn, close to the Cheviot hills. The cottage, many years ago a stable has an open fireplace. Great for relaxing by after days out in the national park.
Powburn is at the foot of Northumberland's Cheviot Hills. Our cottage is very near the turn off for Ingram valley. Both country and coast are easily accessible. Numerous castles on the fabulous Northumberland coastal trail frequented by walkers and cyclists are on your doorstep, as well the large cities of Newcastle (50 mins) and Edinburgh (1hr 30mins). It is a fabulous area for walking cycling or exploring by car. Great cycle and walking routes are accessible straight from the front door. The Alnwick castle made famous by Harry Potter is 8 miles away. Alnwick also has a pool and leisure centre. 5 minutes walk takes you to the nearest shop for provisions, there is even an extensive antiques emporium there as featured on the BBC antiques road trip program. Our property was originally used as a stable and was converted many years ago into a 2 bedroom stone built cottage. The cottage is situated in a gravelled square, away from the road. It can accommodate 4 people, is centrally heated by LPG and has a combi boiler supplying heating and instant hot water, this is included in the price. There is a comfortable cosy lounge with open fire and 32ins HDMI TV with freeview and a DVD player that also plays video tapes! We have wifi broadband too. There is an Initial supply of wood and coal for the fire and a small selection of card and board games suitable for all ages there for your use. There are 2 bedrooms of similar size one with a king size bed and the other has 2 single divans, suitable for children or adults, which can be pushed together to make another large double bed if desired. There is good storage for clothes and suitcases in the bedrooms from inbuilt cupboards. Parking is no problem for cars or a camper van if you are touring. There are 2 outbuildings which can provide secure outside storage for 4 bikes. The kitchen is well equipped including a microwave, electric oven fridge freezer and washing machine. There is a small table which can seat 4. The bathroom is downstairs and it has a shower over the bath. All bed linen and a large and small towel are supplied for each person. There are numerous tourist attractions in the area and we have many leaflets available for your use. The nearest pub is in Glanton, a 3 minute drive or 30 minute walk. There is a children's play park one minute walk away. With swings, climbing frames, and a zip wire!
  • We had a lovely stay. Great location to explore area. Loads of info on things to see. Having fire was lovely.

  • Lovely cottage-very cosy, with all the amenities you could want. Close to the national park, Alnwick and the coast. Matt is a great host, this was our second visit to the cottage and we will definitely be back again in the future! Thanks again Matt!

  • The cottage was lovely and had everything we needed. It was warm and cosy , the beds were comfortable, the shower was brilliant. All the rooms were spotlessly clean. It was well positioned for exploring the area and seeing all the places we visited. The hosts were there to meet us on arrival and took the time to suggest places to visit and a scenic drive to do. The hosts recommended the Tankerville Arms for food which was a few miles drive away, we ate there most evenings and we couldn’t fault the meals, they were delicious and good portions. We had a great week exploring a beautiful area we had not visited before.

    Jill2019-10-02T00:00:00Z
  • A really comfortable cottage with all you need. ideally located to visit around this lovely county. Great sights nearby. We had a brilliant holiday.

    Karen2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • Matt and Lindsay's cottage is well located in quiet backwater of Powburn. Because the village is near a main road it is a good base for exploring the coastline and the beautiful Cheviot Hills. The house was exceptionally clean, fabulous strong shower and comfortable bed mattresses which we appreciated after our long day walks!

    Antonia2019-08-16T00:00:00Z

  • A clean and comfortable property which has everything you need. Choice of rain shower or regular shower in downstairs bathroom/toilet. Very comfortable bed. Games and books in living room. Great location. We enjoyed walking in the beautiful Breamish valley, a short drive away. Highly recommend you don’t miss this. Closer still is Branton Lakes to wander around and view the wildfowl. Parking in courtyard in front of cottage. Wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again.

  • Perfectly located close enough to Alnwick and main routes to do some sightseeing, we had a lovely stay in this fairly new cottage, in a really quiet cul de sac. The family immediately relaxed and felt at home and Russell is a great host, communication was spot on and the welcome pack was clear and helpful. Suits those looking to sight see in some of the local towns or cities or walk in the amazing countryside all around. Highly recommend

In terms of location it is very rural but we had no problem driving to Alnwick (20 mins) and found it very peaceful. Will be recommending to friends and hopefully returning!

  • A great house with lots of helpful and useful touches e.g. loads of good quality kids' toys; really useful kitchen equipment. The house is very relaxing and spacious. Good walks around. The nearest shop at the garage is a 15min walk; the pub in Powburn (also 15min walk?) seems to be closed at the moment, so some distance to the next one. All in all, we had a great stay.

  • An excellent host, quick to respond to any queries, with a truly outstanding place that easily exceeded our expectations with little touches like marmalade for our breakfasts. The amenities really are good, with kids and adults alike finding plenty to keep us busy, from a very well equipped kids play room, to a proper gym and luxuries pool and sauna facilities. Even got in a little tennis. This is far more than just a BnB and I'm already planning my return visit.

  • Brilliant is the best summary for our stay. If you want a quiet retreat with loads to do and see a short drive away then this is for you. Delightful cottage, comfortable bed, wood burner adds to the atmosphere. Well equipped and comfortable. The shower could be more powerful but this little quibble did not affect the perfect break and would not stop me booking again. Thank you for letting us use your space .

  • This is a really spacious but very cosy cottage with a fantastic wood burner and full kitchen facilities. It's set in a beautiful location with stunning surrounding views. There are great local walks and a handful of pubs within an easy driving distance.

  • Beautiful cottage, very clean and cosy. Perfect location to explore Northumberland. Highly recommended, we would most definitely return.

  • Rothlea Cottage provides cosy accommodation in a quiet peaceful spot close to the small village of Whittingham. There is a lot to see and do close at hand. If you like walking along sandy beaches with the surf rolling in along a beautiful coastline, we suggest you try Alnmouth Bay (particularly from the Amble side) or walking to Embleton Bay from Craster - you can pick up some freshly smoked kippers from the smoke shed on the way back! Close by, Alnwick Castle is palatial, has an interesting history, and the state rooms hold works of art by Canaletto and Titian, among others. The National Trust Property at Crag Side has a beautiful house featuring Arts and crafts designs and includes many features from the inventor owner William Armstrong. It also has extensive grounds to wander around and enjoy. Holy Island (featuring Lindisfarne castle (NT) and the rems of a Benedictine priory (EH) is less than an hour away over a tidal causeway. It's also well worth a visit to Barter Books at Alnwick Station - with over 350,0OO second hand books and eating rooms with cosy log fires.

    Geoff2019-10-12T00:00:00Z
  • Rothlea is the most comfortable of cottages and makes the ideal base for exploring some of Northumberland's wonderful attractions. The cottage has everything you could want in a peaceful location (without being remote) with lovely views over surrounding countryside. Bamburgh, Holy Island, Alnwick, The Cheviots, Farne Islands (via Seahouses) etc are all within easy reach. We only scratched the surface and would have liked to have spent more time exploring inland and on foot from Rothlea. We did however have a bracing dip at Linhope Spout which was relatively quite out of the main summer season. We would definitely recommend Rothlea and will hopefully be returning in the future.

Lots of information about the area is provided, including OS walking maps which is brilliant. The cottage is easy to find from the directions provided. It's a good idea to bring a torch if you're going to be outdoors after dark.

You will not regret booking to stay, thank you again for having us.

The breakfast were delicious and served with so many thoughtful touches. The location feels quite wild and remote but it is actually quite easy to get in to Alnwick and the coast. Great pub a short drive away.

  • Don’t bother looking for another B&B. This is the one you are looking for. Jane and Adrian have created the quintessential English country retreat. The perfect balance of rustic charm and refinement, set in some of England’s most beautiful countryside. We went to some of the best restaurants in Northumberland, but the best meal of the trip was the one we had on our first evening, made by Jane. Our hosts have lived in the area for many years, and are keen to pass on details of the hidden secrets of the area. If you are looking for a fairytale English escape, look no further. We are already working out when we can next come visit, to see our new friends.

  • if you want to get away from the stress of modern life this is the perfect place . Set in a tiny hamlet surrounded by the most beautiful countryside this place is perfect for walkers and nature lovers. Red squirrels, hares and weasels can be easily spotted and we could watch house martins feeding their young at our bedroom window. A beautifully furnished traditional farmhouse with a charming garden.

  • Jane and Adrian were great hosts. They have a lovely character house in a beautiful setting. Nothing was too much trouble and we particularly enjoyed Jane's meals around the big kitchen dining table.

  • A warm welcome from Jane and Adrian was just the start of an extremely pleasant weekend. Nothing was too much trouble for our hosts who did absolutely everything they could to make our stay as comfortable as possible. From the delicious homemade cake on arrival to the tremendous breakfast with seemingly infinite choice, nothing was too much trouble. Don't miss the opportunity to take a guided stroll around the simply delightful garden. We will definitely be returning to this Northumberland gem.

Our Garden Room is our most popular room. It is in a wing of the house and has it’s own entrance. It is a large, light room with french windows leading out to a gravelled garden.
Ingram House is in the Northumberland National Park. There are wonderful walks from the door and there is easy access to the coast and castles nearby. The peace and tranquility of Ingram has been enjoyed by many people over the past 10,000 years. There is a small cafe in the village which is home to an information centre housing finds from archeological digs and the history of the valley.
Ingram is a small village. The nearest village to us is Wooler, and Alnwick is a 20 minute drive away. The Scottish border is twenty miles north of us.

We are situated in the Northumberland National Park. There are many lovely walks from the door. We are on the Sandstone Way and previous guests have found us to be a convenient overnight stopping place. We offer dinner by arrangement - please talk to us about this if this is something you would like. It should be noted that the nearest pub is about 20mins by car.
  • Lovely location and hosts, would recommend for anyone looking to stay in that beautiful part of the country.

  • We enjoyed a very pleasant short stay at Jane's B&B. The room was beautifully appointed and the beds exceedingly comfortable. Jane was very easy to communicate with and provided us with excellent recommendations for local pubs and nearby spots to take in the night sky. The breakfast was tasty and beautifully presented. We would definitely recommend her place to anyone looking to stay in the area.

  • Lovely period, traditional house, with quality, fixtures and fittings. Bed extremely comfortable, with Egyptian cotton sheets. Hosts were friendly, chatty and very helpful. Lovely rural location, very quiet at night to get away from it all. Dog friendly, £10 per dog per night. Jane's waived these fees, as there was some disruption to the supply of water, which was not ideal, however, the hosts supplied, plenty of bottled water. Declined breakfast, so could not comment on that, however, I understand, it is a freshly home cooked breakfast. Dinner is also available, when pre booked. Only one issue, was having to be out by 10.30am in the morning and not back til after 4.30pm in the afternoon, which is somewhat of an archaic system and not ideal for everyone. If they changed that and you could come and go as you like, with a guest entrance, so not going through their private kitchen, it would be ideal. Wifi not available in our room, but 4g fine, so can tether to laptops etc. Lovely, being stuck in a traffic jams of sheep this morning, when leaving. #lifeinthecountry

Ingram House is located in the Northumberland National Park and Dark Sky Park in the foothills of the Cheviots. We are ideally situated for walking, cycling, visits to castles and coastline, and stargazing. This has been our family home since 2003 and we have shared it with guests for several years. We offer traditional, comfortable rooms. Breakfast is taken in our family dining room, as is dinner if guests like to relax here after a day exploring all that surrounds us.
Guests come in through our family kitchen into the hall. Our dining room is off the hall and is shared with all our guests. Our comfortably furnished bedrooms are upstairs - we have three additional rooms to this one listed separately, these include a super king/twin room with ensuite bath, a ground floor super king/twin room with ensuite shower and a double with ensuite bath. This room was a family members room - he has since moved away but a few of his things are still in the room as it is where he returns to when he comes to see us. We have worked hard to create the garden and guests are welcome to wander round it or sit on one of the many seats scattered around. We also have a telescope which guests are welcome to use for stargazing.
Ingram is a small village with no amenities except the church, the village hall and a cafe/information centre. This is why we offer dinner to our guests by arrangement, but we are also happy to suggest nearby village pubs for evening meals. The hills around us are beautiful and there are many well signed footpaths nearby.

Bluebell Cottage – a self-catering cottage set within the grounds of The Grange in an idyllic location in rural Northumberland. Sleeps 4. Bluebell provides excellent appointed accommodation in a quiet and peaceful setting. It is ideally located for walking in the Cheviots or strolling along the sandy beaches of Northumberland’s heritage coast. Situated only 9 miles west of the market town of Alnwick, famous for its Castle, Gardens and local attractions.
  • This is an ideal cottage to visit all the great costal attractions of the Northeast like Alnwick or Holy Island. We were only there for 2 nights but the place has all the facilities to make it your home for a week or so. A pitty the living room is quite dark and the terrace gives only a view to the garden but then, it rained most of the time so we did not mind to much and lit the fireplace! Highly recommendable!

Ingram House was originally the farmhouse built in the early 18th century. Bits have been added since then to create a wonderful family home. Our superking double/twin with ensuite shower is on the ground floor, our superking/twin room and double, both ensuite, are dedicated bed and breakfast rooms and our second double and the single room are family rooms but our children are now not often here. These two rooms share a bathroom. Four bedrooms are upstairs. Freshly cooked breakfasts are taken in our family dining room and we also offer dinner to guests by arrangement because we are some distance from pubs and restaurants. Walkers and cyclists usually take this option. We have plenty of secure storage for bikes and ample drying space for wet outdoor clothing.
