Your guide to Port Welshpool

All About Port Welshpool

This tiny hamlet, located in South Gippsland, southern Victoria, is home to just over 200 people. Well known among the locals as a prime area for fishermen and their commercial fishing work, the town is a popular destination for those looking to hook a line for entertainment as well. The town centre hosts a general store for basic shopping needs, a foreshore reserve for picnic fun, and the Port Welshpool Pier for gorgeous ocean views.

There is also a history museum that provides an interesting account of the town’s transformation from being a busy port to a tranquil village. Despite being a quiet town, there’s plenty here to keep visitors busy: visit the Nooramunga Marine & Coastal Park for recreational fun or take a trip to Barry Beach, a former railway line closed down in 1992 that had once served as a supply base for oil rigs operating in the Bass Strait.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Port Welshpool

Port Welshpool has its warmest weather during the summer months, which are the most popular times of year for visitors to rent Port Welshpool accommodation. In January, there is a popular summertime festival called Sea Days, featuring fishing and cooking demonstrations, live music, and children’s activities. During the spring and autumn months, things are a bit quieter as the temperature begins to drop; however, this is still a nice time to explore the coastline and get great photos with very few people around. In the winter, the weather can be quite chilly, especially in the evenings, but this is a great opportunity to experience a different side of this small settlement.

Top things to do in Port Welshpool

Port Welshpool Long Jetty

Constructed in 1938, the 800-metre long Port Welshpool Long Jetty was originally built for commercial use. It is now mostly used for visitors looking to walk out into the waters for a quick snap, or those avid fishermen and women looking to catch themselves a nice supper. There are many amenities located along the jetty such as fish cleaning tables, rod holders, and a shelter where you can find protection from wind and rain. There are also signs along the way that offer historical information about the original jetty located here that was built in 1859.

Port Welshpool Museum

The Port Welshpool Museum is located in one of the town’s oldest buildings. Constructed in 1881, the house now takes you through the past events that have led up to present-day Port Welshpool, with exhibits showcasing the town’s rich maritime history. Make sure to check out the antiques that the museum has on display and some of the old fishing boats no longer in service.

Agnes Falls Scenic Reserve

The Agnes Falls Scenic Reserve lies northwest of Port Welshpool and features one of the highest waterfalls in Victoria. The waterfall plunges 60 metres into the gorge below and throughout the gorge, you can see remnants of the forest that once covered the entire area. For that aerial view, take a hike through the nearby Blue Gum Forest until you reach the lookout that opens up for a wide view above the falls.
