Your guide to Port Lincoln
All About Port Lincoln
Nestled between rolling hills and on South Australia’s southern U-shaped coastline, sits the small city of Port Lincoln. The sandy coloured cliffs and bright blue waters at the nearby national parks of Coffin Bay and Port Lincoln lend a Mediterranean feel to this part of the county.
Port Lincoln is situated near Boston Bay, the largest natural harbour in Australia, and its commercial fishing industry has been a vital part of the city’s livelihood for the last 100 years, leading it to claim the title of the “seafood capital of Australia.” You will find an abundance of fresh seafood markets, oyster bars, fish and chip shops, and formal restaurants serving whole lobster or tuna sashimi.
Recreational fishing is also popular here, with plenty of bait shops and boat hires around the city offering supplies and advice for catching local favorites like kingfish and Australian herring. Port Lincoln is also home to small, local wineries with waterfront views, which you can reach by car or by trekking along footpaths.
The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Port Lincoln
Port Lincoln’s warm, dry weather draws visitors hoping to make the trek through beachside national parks like Lincoln and Coffin Bay and swim at the local beaches. Winters are quite mild, but you should expect cool nights and plenty of rain through September. In April, the annual SALT Festival takes over the city for 10 days of performance art, rock shows on the beach, acrobatics, stand-up comedy, and all kinds of creativity. In January, you can attend the quirky Tunarama Festival, where you’ll find carnival rides, live entertainment for kids and adults, and some seriously fresh seafood.
Top things to do in Port Lincoln
Parnkalla Trail
You can take a scenic tour of the city with a journey along the 35-kilometre Parnkalla Trail. The path is paved, making it accessible for wheelchairs, electric bikes, inline skates, or hikers. Along the way, you’ll spot the Axel Stenross Maritime Museum, Shelly Beach, Moreton Bay fig trees, the jetty, a striking statue of a fisherman with a catch on his line, and local wildlife from birds to small reptiles.
Lincoln National Park
The clear jewel-toned waters of Boston Bay and the granite headlands make this one of South Australia’s most visited parks. Memory Cove Wilderness Protection Area is popular for its incredibly clear blue bay and sugar sand beach where swimming and fishing are permitted. Some of Australia’s most recognizable wildlife can be found throughout this area of the Jussieu Peninsula, including wallabies, kangaroos, emus, and echidnas.
Seafood
Thanks to Port Lincoln's rich marine history, commercial and recreational fishing are still an important part of its culture. Embrace the local culinary scene by trying fresh-caught seafood, such as kingfish, abalone, tuna, and salmon. You can sit down for a meal at one of the city’s restaurants, or visit a local fish market to buy fresh seafood and cook your own meal in your Port Lincoln holiday house.
