Augill Castle : much better than a hotel : unlike anywhere you have ever stayed before. In Cumbria's Eden Valley between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, England's two most popular national parks, Augill is set in it's own twenty acres of grounds. Easy going, relaxed but still ridiculously romantic and decadently comfortable. We'll do everything we can to make you feel as if you have arrived as guests, and will leave as friends.
The ORANGERY is on the ground floor outside the main castle, with huge arched gothic windows opening onto your own secluded garden and the castle gardens beyond. There is a modern open top four poster bed, stunning bronze wall and fabulous contemporary bathroom, and a connecting day room has a French style metal day bed which opens as two full sized singles. Requests can be made for a particular room but we reserve the ability to move you between these rooms to accommodate other guests.
Augill Castle sits in the geographical centre of the British Isles in the stunning countryside of the Eden Valley. Sitting at the foot of the Pennines and surrounded by the Lakeland Fells and Yorkshire Dales, the castle has 15 acres of wild gardens, lawns, paddocks and flower beds. It is the ultimate English gentleman's retreat. Built as a folly by an eccentric man, the castle is a fine essay in Victorian castle building.
  • Absolutely beautiful both inside and out! The staff was superb as was the food, accommodations, and experience!!! Without a doubt we would stay here again, next time for longer!!!

  • What a nice experience. Beautiful place. Love the grounds. Our bed was heavenly! Beautiful bedding and attention to detail with bathroom amenities. Great English castle experience!

  • An absolutely amazing stay in this fabulous old building. Great bed. Awesome breakfast to start the day. Thank you very much !😀

  • Just fantastic. Peaceful location, fantastic accommodation, friendly hosts, brilliant atmosphere. Great touches all over the house - and a very welcome attitude to 'explore' and discover. Hats, swords, pictures, blankets, games, a cinema (!) and loads more. Highly recommended!

  • Great place, a real castle experience. Food was excelent and best part is everyone’s hospitability. Highly recommended!!

  • I’d like to recommend to anyone who is looking for castle-living. That is amazing stay and my kids love it very much. The little one can play at the toy room for a whole day. The castle is close to the Lake District. It is totally fine if you want to go and back at the same day. There is some miss understanding when we booked the room. Wendy give us two beds with a reasonable price, which is really nice. We will surely come and visit next time.

    Fan2019-04-24T00:00:00Z
  • It was an absolutely fantastic experience staying at Augill Castle and we will definitely come back. Everything was spot on and the food was excellent! The rooms and the exterior are even nicer than in the pictures. We highly recommend this accommodation.

  • Augill Castle is truly special. The history of the place, the way Simon and Wendy have restored it, and the way they run it today were all exceptional. I loved the informal nature of our stay--it really feels like you're with family when you're at Augill. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone traveling to the Lake District. And the rooms (and linens!) are incredible to boot.

My place is close to Lake District, family-friendly activities. You’ll love my place because of the outdoors space, the people, and the neighbourhood. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, business travellers, families (with kids), big groups, and furry friends (pets). Please enquire about pets as we do allow dogs, but there is a small fee.
Beautiful countryside location! The property is surrounded by very beautiful views. The house is located between Kendal and Sedbergh and is close to the Lake District. The house itself is huge with 4 large family bedrooms. The main family room has one super king size and is en suite. There are two more family bedrooms both with a double bed and a single bed in them., then the 4 th bedroom has a king size bed, all bedrooms are very spacious. There is a large living room with a real log burning fire and a large dining area
Very beautiful countryside close to the Lake District and to Yorkshire Dales. The property is a short car journey from Kendal and Sedbergh in the opposite direction.
  • We stayed as a group of 9 friends to celebrate a birthday, the house was perfect. It was spacious and the hot tub was great and it was immaculately cleaned. Julie showed us into the property and explained how to use the oven, the heating etc. Dogs roamed round the property (which we loved) as the farm was next door. It was a 20 minute drive to Kendal centre. Thanks julie, hopefully we will stay again in the future!

  • Absolutely outstanding! Feels like a beautiful home with fresh flowers and little touches everywhere. Great location for exploring the lakes and dales but to be honest we didn’t want to leave; just enjoyed relaxing in this beautiful home. Will definitely be back!

    Katie2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • The house was just perfect for a family party - something for everyone. It had everything we needed and the little touches, such as the fresh flowers & basket of logs for the fire made it feel really special. The thoughtful addition of the robes for the hot tub meant that even Storm Dennis couldn’t prevent us from daily hot tub time!

    Kim2020-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful place to help celebrate my 21st. The house is gorgeous and in a very scenic location. Would stay here again!

    Eleanor2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • This is a beautiful farmhouse and you will not be disappointed should you visit. There was 9 of us and fitted us all comfortably. Pool table for the boys and hot tub for the rest of the family and a nice little sing along on the piano. Great spot away from the hustle and bustle with amazing views. You will not be disappointed with this little gem.

  • We had a wonderful time in Peters cottage. A quiet and peaceful location but so easy to get to from the M6 and 5 minutes from Sedburgh. The whole place was clean and looked lovely and the rooms were spacious. The hot tub was clean and good for the evenings, and when it was too cold we had the log burner going to. The scenery nearby is beautiful. Would definitely stay again, thanks Peter!

  • A lovely little cottage with everything you could need for your stay, its been a gem of a find for us, we keep re booking!

    Hannah2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • After our weekend plans got cancelled last minute (gig was postponed), we thought it’d be a crying shame to not book something else a bit different. We found this little gem in Kirkby Stephen. Cute, cozy and clean with an added bonus of a wood burner. Quick and easy to book with hosts who got back to me super quick. When we arrived we went for a picturesque walk and sampled some of the local pubs, our favourite being the la’l nook and their local gin selection! We had a great time and now we’re home the diary is out trying to find a weekend that we can find to book this place again. Thanks so much. x

The Taggy Man pub just across the road perfect for a drink or pub meal and the Church Gallery just a few doors down, for coffee and cake and a niche shop. Ruth was a great host, and very quick to respond to any queries.

Comfortable converted watermill sleeping one or two couples, overlooking a spectacular waterfall, in the tranquil Eden Valley, between Lake District and Dales. Perfect for a romantic getaway, or watching abundant birds and wildlife. Ideal for honeymoons, anniversaries or engagements! You won't find accommodation closer to rushing water than this! No under 12s. Check in Fridays and Mondays only.
This centuries-old converted watermill enjoys a unique location right beside a spectacular waterfall. Watch the falls from your living room or balcony, and see amazing birds and wild creatures without having to leave the comfort of your cottage. The Mill is fully equipped with everything you'd want for a relaxing break in a magical rural haven.
Rutter Falls is a wonderful local attraction, and this cottage affords you a unique opportunity to enjoy them close-up. Enjoy a cocktail as you watch the floodlit waterfall flow by your private balcony. The surrounding area is rural and picturesque, with beautiful walks along the river or through the adjoining farmland.
  • The Mill at Rutter Falls is a characteristic building in beautiful surroundings. Loved the interior decoration and homely touches. So special to be able to sit out on the balcony with a glass of bubbles and watch and listen to the falls cascading over the rocks. Great wildlife and visits from Squirrel Nutkin!! Lovely walks direct from the Mill. Would definitely return to this idyllic place! Thank you!

    Lisa2020-03-23T00:00:00Z
  • Completely amazing

    Vicky2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • Relaxed and beautiful. A great spot to walk from or drive to local walks and explore a beautiful part of the country. Thank you to our hosts who were on hand when we needed them and left us to our devices for the rest of the time. Blue tits and red squirrels come right to the door to feed - just lovely.

    Lars2020-02-27T00:00:00Z
  • A true gem hidden away in the Lake District for the perfect getaway! We stayed in the Mill and the building itself was incredible, a fantastic open space with authentic wooden beams and spiral staircase! A very cosy interior with everything you need including a log burner for the perfect evenings. Coupled with the incredible location of being right next to Rutter Falls is a stay you will never forget. We came when the river was high so the waterfall was an incredible sight, we spent a lot of our time looking out from the balcony which is right on top of it. Such a peaceful location with the sound of the waterfall at night was almost therapeutic! Great walks literally on the doorstep and only an 8 min drive from great pubs and restaurants and a chance to drive through the river ;). Jane was a fantastic host keeping us well updated with arrival instructions and we were greated with a bottle of Prosecco and home baked bread! A fantastic stay all round.

    Keisha2020-02-03T00:00:00Z
  • A completely unique place to visit. Highly recommended.

    Elizabeth2020-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • A quirky, unique, bespoke cottage with an amazing setting next to a beautiful waterfall, with the stream just a metre from property, and a birdseye waterfall view from the high level deck outside lounge. Red squirrels eating nuts on railings right outside window. Secure garden areas for dogs. Lovely welcome tray, and Jane the host had baked a homemade loaf for us which was still warm on arrival. Very quiet, peaceful, and relaxing location. A feeling of real seclusion with access only via the ford, or very long, narrow farm tracks.

    Karen2020-01-06T00:00:00Z
  • An absolutely wonderful trip - the Mill is a gorgeous space and Jane and her husband were very welcoming and helpful. We went for walks and visited local restaurants, but also enjoyed cosy evenings staying in and playing board games in front of the log burning stove. We plan to return in the warmer months and make even more use of the beautiful surroundings. Can’t recommend highly enough!

    Emily2019-12-16T00:00:00Z
  • Outstanding cottage, well equipped and very comfortable. We loved seeing the red squirrels helping themselves to the peanuts. The location just next to the waterfall is truly special. It's a pity it was very cold so we couldn't spend longer out on the decking. The bonus of having the log burner was very useful and made the cottage even more cosy. Jane and Jim live next door but leave you to enjoy your holiday but available if you need them. We appreciated the little extra touches of prosecco, home made bread and excellent jam. We really enjoyed our stay.

Welcome to my home: a spacious, modern house in a quiet residential street just a minute's walk from Market Sq. Comfortable and nicely furnished, it's good for couples, solo adventurers, and business travellers. I also have an twin room listed: www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/19010779
An airy, en-suite double room with TV, dressing table, drawers and hanging space for clothes. Cross the road from the house and pass through to Kirkby Stephen's main street for pubs, cafes & shops, a little art / culture, a small supermarket. But really you’re in the countryside: the Pennines and the Yorkshire Dales National Park are just minutes away on foot, as is the River Eden.
  • We enjoyed our brief but very comfortable stay in your lovely house and all your helpful communications.

    Janet2020-01-16T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic little place in heart of kirkby stephen. I used for a sleep stop and rest along my work journey. Perfect couldn't fault. Many thanks and merry xmas tom.

    Karen2019-12-11T00:00:00Z
  • Tom has a beautiful place, its clean, neat but extremely comfortable. We had a great nights sleep, the shower was lovely. Tom was a great, if absent, host. Everything was laid out for us. Highly recommended.

    Anita2019-11-24T00:00:00Z
  • Tom’s place is clean, comfortable and convenient for so many areas and activities around a Kirkby Stephen. I spent two days at the sheep auctions just down the road. Don’t miss them! Many restaurants are just a few minutes walk away. Tom is very helpful and easy to be around. Have stayed twice and would do so again. A great Airbnb!

    Deborah2019-10-19T00:00:00Z
  • Tom’s place is just what a traveller needs - comfortable, warm, sparkling clean, quiet, and Tom is easy and trusting about use of his kitchen and lounge. Although we didn’t meet Tom, we had a great time getting to know the other guests- super hill walkers and adventurers! A good Air BnB experience.

    Joanna2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • Tom’s place was great, enjoyed the town and our walk around. Tom is a nature guide and he suggested an amazing hike that we took and loved!! It was challenging but fabulous!! Great area to explore the Lake District.

    Tracy2019-09-27T00:00:00Z
  • Tom has a lovely welcoming home that is very well-located in Kirkby Stephen. My ensuite room was spotless and like the rest of the house, beautifully furnished. The lovely comfy bed was just what this weary walker needed after several days hiking from St. Bees. Tom is from the area and knows its history well. On top of all his other kindnesses, he drove me to the railway station, (1 1/2 miles away) — much appreciated after the demanding hike to get there. When I continue my Coast to Coast walk in the future I hope to stay there again.

    Penny2019-09-24T00:00:00Z
  • Tom's place is very attractive and in an excellent location. The room was clean and comfortable, with an excellent en-suite shower room. The shared sitting room, which we didn't use, looked very comfortable and was well provided with games, jigsaws and TV. A great place to stay.

The property has everything you need together with lovely extra touches like loaf of bread, milk, cereal etc. Underfloor heating in living room was great as the weather was terrible. Would consider going back in summer to enjoy some more walks in the area.

  • Paul and Tracy are fantastic hosts. All the information we received was accurate. The heating was on when we arrived, Paul met us, showed us around and explained everything. He left us a lovely welcome pack including bubbly and chocolates. Tracy arrived with a lemon drizzle cake for us (gorgeous!) and she even brought treats for our dog (Smuggie says thanks). The house was spotless, everything was as described / expected. The house was really cosy albeit very spacious. The master bedroom is incredible and has SKY TV. There is freeview / smart TV downstairs. The house is right in the town with great shops and pubs within walking distance. We will definitely be back, thanks Paul and Tracy.

  • Paul and Tracy were fantastic hosts from the welcoming emails after booking, through to the unexpected delivery of Tracy's great lemon drizzle cake, we loved staying at the Old Gallery. Whilst the weather was terrible, it didn't matter because the place is so cosy-helped by the great log fire.

  • Paul and Tracy are amazing and welcoming hosts who made our stay more than anything we expected for a last min birthday trip. The location of this gorgeous cottage is perfect for exploring both Yorkshire dales and the North Pennines. When we got to the Old Gallery we were welcomed by Paul, who showed us around and had a warm fire ready for us when we arrived from Brighton. We were enchanted by the gorgeous rustic decor and felt right at home right away! We got a lovely welcome hamper with a birthday card for my partner and later surprised by a delicious home made cake by Tracy! COULDN'T RECOMMEND THIS PLACE ENOUGH! Thank you again for everything! We are looking forward to coming back in the summer time.

  • This is a rare place right in centre of Yorkshire and Lake district.Geographically perfectly place airbnb with a great host. We were offered home made cup cakes the next day. That was quite nice of Paul and Tracy. They are very sweet and responsive on chat. House is minutely managed with all equipment, accessories as expected in an airbnb. A perfect rusty feel for the vacation.

An hour from Lake Windermere. A paradise for walkers, cyclists, lovers of nature. Kendal, Penrith and Carlisle just a short drive away. Hop, skip and a jump from Yorkshire Dales and Pennines- an area awash with walks, historical market towns.......Adults, children, babies and dogs all welcome!

  • What a fantastic find! We were originally meant to stay just the one night but after getting so settled in this home away from home, we decided to extend our trip! Kate has thought of quite literally everything when it comes to making her annexe a place where you feel comfortable. When we arrived she had put on all the heaters, already put up a travel cot for our baby so we didn’t have to get out ours and it felt so cosy. We had no trouble getting into the house using a easy key box and Kate came to check there wasn’t anything else we needed. Every our dog Dobby has everything he required and loved watching the sheep and goats out of the big front door windows. Thanks Kate! We hope to be back next year and will be sure to book with you again.

    Rebecca2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • Had a lovely stay here as a family. Perfect retreat in the countryside!

    Peter2020-02-29T00:00:00Z

Leisure Cottage is a charming, two bedroom, stone built cottage in the heart of Kirkby Stephen. It sleeps 4 comfortably with the option of a pull out bed which sleeps a further two. There is off street parking, open gas fire, modern bathroom with underfloor heating and a downstairs cloakroom. There is a small outside seating and a raised garden with lovely views. Leisure Cottage is situated 50 metres from the River Eden and 200 metres from the high street with its popular cafes, pubs and shops
There is a secure dry shed for storage of bulky items and a mountain bike which you are welcome to use at your own risk
Leisure Cottage is situated on a quiet road leading down to the River Eden so there is no through traffic. It is literally a stones throw from the river where our children spent many happy days feeding the ducks, skimming stones and getting wet .There are numerous walks ranging from gentle strolls to thigh burning climbs all without the need to drive. If you have transport there is Tan Hill inn the highest pub in England about a 20 min drive away and the Mallerstang Valley about ten minutes drive .If you are interested in wild life we have seen pheasant, grouse ,deer, hare, eagles, ptarmigan and red squirrels on our walks. In fact we believe there is a red squirrel family nesting near by as they are often seen running along the stone wall opposite the cottage. You may also see the large African parrots . Scarlett Macaws that frequent Kirkby Stephen .They roost nearby at the late John Strutts home but are often seen flying around particularly near the river The parish church is also well worth visiting, it is called the Cathedral of the Dales and parts of the structure date back to Norman times it’s a particularly impressive church for the size of the town . The cloisters are also an interesting historical feature. Kirkby Stephen is well served with eating and drinking establishments it is after all still a working market town with weekly livestock auctions , a real experience if you’ve never been to one !
  • Really enjoyed the trip. The cottage is great with everything on hand and lots of space. The location was fantastic for Kirby - all the amenities of the High Street, please easy access to beautiful walks. We will definitely come back!

  • We had a great stay at leisure cottage for a last minute trip to the countryside. The location was fantastic right by a river or a few steps to town. Brendan also recommended some great walks nearby. The cottage was a good size and it was a nice touch having underfloor heating in the bathroom as the weather was so cold!! We also liked having the choice of a bath or a separate shower. Thank-you for for the small touches and treats we really appreciated it after a long drive. I’d recommend leisure cottage for a a peaceful getaway in a lovely market town.

Antique settle and wooden refectory table were great for spreading out my maps on - also appreciated the comfy sofa, very comfy bed, good shower and nice touches throughout like the wooden doors and china tea cups. Sheep are generally grazing in the surrounding fields and there is very little traffic through the village. The gardens are popular with local wildlife including woodpeckers, owls and red squirrels. we even have the occasional visit from a local flock of parrots
  • Gill and Rob have a wonderful place perfectly located in the Yorkshire Dales to visit the stunning landscapes nearby including the Lake District which is only a short drive away. They are friendly, sociable and considerate hosts - I was offered a larger room when it became available, I relaxed in a proper large cast iron bath, enjoyed the company of dogs and friends, access to their movie collection and felt truly welcomed. I highly recommend it.

    Katherine2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • The house is a lovely spacious farm house, comfortable, and very homely and Gill makes you feel very welcome. There are footpaths at the doorsteps offering a choice of local walks and there is plenty to explore in the area. I look forward to my next visit.

Local attractions in the Dales and about an hour drive to Windermere in the Lake District National Park.
Close enough to local cafes, shops and pubs but far enough away to enjoy the wild, unspoilt upland Dales.
  • The place is absolutely lovely and perfectly located for long countryside walks. We would recommend it to anyone and will be back asap.

  • A warm and comfortable suite of spaces set in bleak wintery landscape. We visited in February. Layout and fittings have been considered carefully, and Debbie and partner are hospitable and friendly. This is an ideal place to escape to whether you want to read quietly or explore the hills.

    Belinda2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Upon our arrival we received a very warm welcome from Debbie and her husband Phil. They seemed genuinely pleased to see us and gave us lots of information about the area and the barn - a lovely personal touch. The barn was immaculately clean and prettily decorated with lots of interesting knick-knacks dotted around the different rooms. Debbie also provided us with milk, bread, yogurt, cereals, teas and coffees in the barn, which we hadn't expected at all. Again, this all added to the feeling that we were well-looked after and welcome visitors to South Lunds. The views from the barn are fantastic and you can be lovely and warm and cosy in the living room and look out at the hills in winter. Debbie is excellent at communicating and provided lots of useful travel updates on the day that we were due to arrive. She answered all messages and questions very quickly. I would highly recommend Debbie's barn to anyone wanting to visit the area, not only for the excellent quality of the accommodation and hospitality, but the barn is well-situated next to lots of public footpaths and is a walker's paradise.

  • Debbie and Phil are such kind and lovely hosts. Nothing was too much trouble. The guest suite of their farmhouse was stunning, finished to such a high quality. It was everything and more we could have expected. Set in a very beautiful valley in the Yorkshire Dales, ideal location for a relaxing weekend away. Perfect.....

  • A wonderful property set overlooking a gorgeous valley. Excellent touches and thoughtful items at every turn. We had a fantastic time and look forward to staying again 5/5!

    Christopher2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful night's stay at Debbie and Phil's place and just sorry it wasn't longer. The place was immaculate and very comfortable with everything we needed for a home away from home night away. Exactly what we were looking for and would thoroughly recommend if you are looking for somewhere in the middle of the dales away from the chaos of normal life.

    Sarah2020-01-25T00:00:00Z
  • Debbie’s place is great base for exploring the local area. Debbie and Phil are exceptionally friendly hosts with a warm welcome and excellent knowledge of walks and tourist attractions. We hope to return soon.

    Ailsa2020-01-04T00:00:00Z
  • This was our second stay at Debbie's; we so much enjoyed the first that we couldn't wait to come back again. The accommodation is outstanding and Debbie and Phil are very friendly and welcoming. They have hilarious pygmy goats, geese, hebridean sheep and a dog called Bentley all set in a stunning Dales valley with direct access to excellent walking routes. There are plenty of good local pubs offering excellent service and food as well. In short, go and forget urban living for a while.

Brackenber Byre is a pet friendly cosy cabin with a private garden and camp fire. You can stay safe in your own private bubble, in the Dales (No WiFi). Enjoy the log fire, 100% cotton sheets, deep bath, luxury towels and Bluetooth speaker. The Byre is in the beautiful landscape of the Westmorland Dales and the ideal location for biking, walking, photography, seeing wildlife & star gazing. The Byre sleeps two in a double bed, is heated by a log burner, has a small kitchen, a bath and WC.
Follow “brackenberbreaks” on Instagram for the latest news, photos & videos. A stay in the Byre is an opportunity for you and your pet to completely escape the overload of daily life, so it has no WiFi. Many years ago the Byre was used to keep sheep in. Now it is a cosy cabin but retains many of its original features such as the wobbly walls and oak roof beams. Many farm animals live in the fields around the Byre so please keep your pooch on a lead. The Byre has parking for one car right outside and is separate from the main farm house, so you have your own private entry door. The porch area is a good place for hanging wet coats as the stone floor has a drain. All the windows have locally made oak sills with a waney edge, a charming feature. The floor is reclaimed vintage pine. The double bed is hand made by a local carpenter as are the oak window frames. The stained glass window in the WC is also made by a local craftsman. The bed sheets are 100% cotton, sateen weave and all the bedding and towels are from Christy. The kitchen utensils are by Denby, all of the finest quality. In the centre of the Byre is a circular log burner with all round glazing so the flames can be seen from all parts of the space. The log burner is the only form of room heating but once its going the Byre warms up very quickly. Next to it is a table and two cosy chairs. The kitchen area is very small and has a microwave, toaster kettle, sink and a small fridge. At the opposite end to the bed is a luxury deep bath with a shower tap. Piping hot water is available on demand via the exterior gas boiler. All you do is turn the tap to the left. A screen can be pulled out to provide extra privacy if required. In the roof is a Velux window which provides a lovely view of the surrounding tree tops from the bath and allows in lots of extra light. It has a blackout blind as do the main windows and door. Outside you have your own section of garden, near the wildlife pond, with a picnic area overlooking the dramatic rolling hills and the western slopes of the Pennine ridge. The garden is full of wildlife and the fields are most interesting during lambing time which starts about the 17 March and then afterwards the wild flowers grow till the grass is cut on about the 10 July. All the sheep and cows and sometimes the horses and a donkey are allowed back in soon after. During clear nights the star gazing here is very good.

  • The Byre is beautifully designed inside and out, very cosy with more than enough space for two of us plus a dog! There is a lovely bath, a log burner and the bed is one of the comfiest I've slept on! It is such a peaceful and quiet location, perfect for getting away, going on quiet walks and stargazing at night. We sat outside on an evening in the fire pit area which was lovely and had a bbq. Jon is a great host and sent over all details we needed before we arrived. He was very helpful and friendly during our stay and told us about the history of the Byre! As an extra touch there was a heated hot water bottle on the bed when we arrived to use whilst we waited for the log burner to warm up which was lovely. I would highly recommend staying here. We are looking forward to returning soon!

  • Honestly one of the loveliest experiences I've ever had at an Airbnb. The location was so peaceful and quiet, as was the byre it's self. So glad we stayed here and can't wait to come back already.

  • Amazing little place to stay with cozy log fire and huge bath! Perfect for my little walking weekend with the dog. Lovely hosts who are willing to help and great location.

  • I had an absolutely wonderful stay at The Byre and I can't recommend it highly enough! I stayed for two nights over a weekend as I wanted a cosy getaway in the countryside, and it absolutely fulfilled that. The property itself is gorgeous - finished to a very high standard, kitted out very tastefully with everything you could need, very clean, comfortable and warm. The logburner, free-standing bath, and comfortable bed were the highlights. Great location for long walks in the countryside, but very accessible too, and plenty to do around. Jon was very communicative, accommodating and friendly - I felt very safe, and couldn't have asked for a better host. I can't wait for my next visit!

Up stairs is the double bedroom with ensuite shower room and large wardrobe. There is off road parking for 2 cars and small garden area for your exclusive use with gas bbq. We named Miller’s Rest as a nod to the history of the old house where the Miller of Scout Green lived in the 19th century.
Scout Green is in the Lake District National Park positioned between the Cumbrian towns of Kendal and Penrith in the Eden Valley but also neighbouring the Westmorland Dales of Yorkshire and the magnificent Howgill fells. Lowther Castle and Gardens are well worth a visit and just 15 minutes drive away. Lowther Host Kendal Calling a great family independent summer music festival. and Penrith's Drovers festival in October is worth visiting too.
  • We loved our stay at Millers Rest. Although it was a quick work visit, I felt very relaxed in the cottage and really enjoyed our short time there. The freshly baked scones on arrival were a lovely touch after a long drive up there too! Thanks for a lovely stay and thanks again for the dog lead loan!

    Debbie2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Such a beautiful spot for a lakes getaway with my 5 year old son. Lovely host that even left us freshly baked cupcakes on arrival. We loved that it was off beaten tourist track. It was the perfect location to get everywhere we wanted to go but quiet, quaint and beautiful. Its very close to Orton which is a lovely little village with a couple nice cafes, chocolate factory, and a good pub. There were some games, puzzles and loads of dvds if you are into staying in, but we spent the few days there touring around all the gorgeous outdoors stuff around and it was the worst weather imaginable. Highly recommended no matter what the weather. Would love to go back.

    Melissa2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • If you're looking for somewhere secluded and quiet and don't mind driving to different areas in the lake district then this place is perfect. Books, dvds, game boards all there with a nice welcoming gift.

  • Where to start....From start to finish Claire has been the absolute perfect host. Quick with responses, very informative and helpful and just couldn’t do enough for us and our dogs whilst we celebrated our joint birthday. The cottage is lovely and cosy with everything you need and we even got a homemade birthday cake each with candle which was a wonderful touch. Unfortunately our wonderful weekend ended in disaster on our way home due to the floods and us needing to be towed 87 miles back home. Claire very kindly picked us back up and let us stay in the cottage until recovery arrived and even fed and watered us. After waiting for hours we asked if we could pay to stay an extra night as it was rather late and Claire happily allowed us and even took us back to the car to pick up essentials. Overall a super hostess who we cannot thank enough and will certainly recommend to friends and family. We hope to be back but without the same outcome as this time!! Thank you for everything Claire and Dave. Helen, Kerry, Chase and Whitley.

    Helen2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • The property was ideally located for a weekend away. Claire was a brilliant host, left us lots of information of things to do in the area. Including dog friendly options. The scones on arrival were a lovey touch too. Would recommend to anyone and we can’t wait to stay again!

The Cottage is situated in the quaint, rural hamlet of Hartley, just 3/4 mile walk from the popular Cumbrian town of Kirkby Stephen. This is a delightful, charming barn conversion. Both spacious, yet cosy. There is private parking at the front of The Cottage for up to 3 cars. Ideal for couples or families. Dog friendly.
The Cottage accommodates 4 people comfortably with two bedrooms and there is a double sofa bed in the living room should you need extra sleeping space. Dogs are considered part of the family and are very much welcome. We would love to know their names! The living room boasts a log burning fire, some logs will be provided and you can purchase some more from the village. The rear of the cottage looks out over the private, enclosed, terraced garden that is accessed by the back door. The dining area seats 6 and looks out over the rear garden. There is a well equipped kitchen and a downstairs cloakroom/toilet. Upstairs is the master bedroom with a double bed and a smaller bedroom with twin beds. There is a family bathroom with a shower and bath. We have indicated this cottage as not suitable for 0-2 years, this is due to there being no stair gates and there is no extra guard to the fire (other than its door). Your infants are welcome as long as you understand this risk. A travel cot can be provided if required and a high chair on request. Small person cutlery is provided in the kitchen. Treat yourself to a digital detox as there is no Wi-Fi here at The Cottage. The phone signal is good and you can get 4G in some parts of the house if you need a fix. Free Wi-Fi is available at some coffee shops in Kirkby Stephen. Hartley has an abundance of red squirrels, pheasants and small birds that are often found passing through the back garden of the cottage. Look out for the parrots!
A short walk away is Kirkby Stephen, a traditional market town of historic buildings, cobbled yards, quaint corners and interesting shops. It is on the famous Settle to Carlisle railway line. There is a heritage/information centre, café's, pubs, eateries, bakery and a superb Indian restaurant! Attracts both walkers and cyclists alike. Situated on the Wainwright’s coast to coast path with walks from the cottage ranging from quiet riverside walks and walks along the railway lines to fells including Eden viaducts footpath, the Poetry trail, Howgills and Dales, Hartley fell and the Nine Standards, Smardalegill Viaduct and Great Asby Scar. For cyclists, Kirkby Stephen is on the W2W (Walney to Wear) coast to coast route and the Lakes and Dales Loop nearby. There is electric bike hire in Hartley and a bike shop/bike repair in Kirkby Stephen. For those that are looking for heritage and culture, there are the castles at Brough and Pendragon and there are nearby villages of Winton, Nateby, Soulby, Ravenstonedale and Newbiggin-on-Lune - some within walking distance.

  • Juliette's cottage is beautiful and so homely. It is perfectly situated for a break from everyday life, and an easy 20 minute walk to kirkby Stephen for the restaurants and pubs. The eggs and milk left were so thoughtful and the house was warm and comfortable. Thankyou for a wonderful stay - we will be back

    Emily2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • What a little gem this cottage is, sparkling clean, superb location, extremely quiet and only about a 10 minute walk to Kirkby Stephen. We were so comfortable there, great storage heating meant the cottage was super toasty all day and evening, much needed as it was cold and snowy outside. Juliette has thought of everything to make your stay a home from home, she even left dog biscuits for Bella, nuts so we could feed the red squirrel and seed to feed the birds! We were luckily enough on our last morning to see the red squirrel, super cute! Can't recommend this place enough. Thanks so much!

  • We had a fab few days at the cottage just after New Year. What a great place to explore some fantastic walks to blow away the cobwebs. The cottage is really homely and peaceful as well as being spotlessly clean. We played games and read books and just chilled by the fire most evenings. Juliette also helped us out when we left a few things behind, a really great host.

Welcome to my home: a spacious, modern house in a quiet residential street just a minute's walk from Market Sq. Comfortable and nicely furnished, it's good for couples, solo adventurers, and business travellers. I also have an en-suite double room listed: www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/10759053
An airy, twin room with TV, drawers and hanging space for clothes. Cross the road from the house and pass through to Kirkby Stephen's main street for pubs, cafes & shops, a little art / culture, a small supermarket. But really you’re in the countryside: the Pennines and the Yorkshire Dales National Park are just minutes away on foot, as is the River Eden.
  • Very clean and tidy. Ideally situated in Kirkby Stephen being just a couple of minutes walk to town centre.

    Rob2020-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • When you stay at Tom's house you will get an informative, relaxed and helpful host in a clean, tidy and warm house. Access to a large kitchen, living room and bathroom. The town could not be more conveniently located for getting either a take away or a meal in one of the pubs, all a short walk away. It is also a real pretty town with many other interesting shops etc

    Lisa2020-01-14T00:00:00Z
  • Tom was incredibly friendly and helpful with his responses. His place was clean and well situated in the centre of town, with easy parking. We ended up having the whole house to ourselves as he was away for the weekend and the other room wasn’t booked, which was a real bonus!

    Louis2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • Tom was an amazing host. Great food & conversation. Warm, comfortable living space and a spacious, clean bathroom. Perfect centralized location to stroll around the town. Thanks for hosting!

    Ashley2019-10-10T00:00:00Z
  • My son and I had a great stay at Tom’s place in Kirkby Stephen.Tom was away for the weekend but he left clear instructions as to how to find and get into the house. We were able to use his kitchen and dining area and being keen walkers there was plenty of useful information on local walks if we had needed it. We, however, were on a mission to climb the four 2,000 ft hills in the Warcop military area ( just up the road in the Northern Pennines AONB) which is only open to the public on a few Sundays in the year. This is an excellent location for exploring the Dales, Pennines and Eastern fringes of the Lakes. The house was spotlessly clean and tidy and we had use of the bathroom next to the bedroom. Another couple arrived after us and occupied the top floor double bedroom. We enjoyed breakfast with them and had a lot in common. We highly recommend this lovely house to others.

    Mike2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • Tom is a great host with excellent communication and a lovely house which is fully equipped and well located.

    Jamie2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • I had a great and very relaxed stay at Tom's place. Easy access via keybox (although Tom was just leaving as I arrived). Nice room, great facilities and great communications! Great location for access to the Lakes. Made even better by us realising we'd meet before! Thank you for a lovely weekend!

    Tavi2019-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • Tom is a very welcoming and relaxed host. We turned up pretty wet with muddy boots but was t an issue. Pot of tea on arrival w6a massively welcome. Chat around the table was fun as well. We had twin room with shared bathroom. All very clean and tidy. Tom was very easygoing and left us to help ourselves to breakfast and tea and leave when we were ready. Highly recommended

A traditional market town of historic buildings, cobbled yards, quaint corners and interesting shops, ideally located in the beautiful Upper Eden valley, formerly the old county of Westmorland, now Cumbria. This is an area of Cumbria much less well known than the Lake District, but equally appealing. It is surrounded by a landscape of pastoral rural scenery and wild uplands and offers breathtaking views in every direction and has been part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, since 2016. Remotely located from large towns and population centres, Kirkby Stephen has developed a strong and self-sufficient identity and a vibrant sense of community. Surrounded by spectacular scenery, the ancient market town of Kirkby Stephen in the Upper Eden Valley enjoys an enviable position between the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District National Parks. The town is also close to the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Kirkby Stephen was Cumbria's first "Walkers are Welcome" town and winner of the prestigious title of Calor® "English Village of the Year", the town makes an ideal base for exploring not only the local area but further afield.  In summer the town is vibrant with floral displays and attractive gardens - helping to make Kirkby Stephen a Cumbria in Bloom winner.  This is excellent walking and cycling country and the area has an amazing range of flora and fauna, with four nature reserves within a 5 mile radius of Kirkby Stephen. Around the town are a number of attractive villages - Winton, Hartley, Nateby, Soulby, Ravenstonedale and Newbiggin-on-Lune - some within walking distance. Whatever the time of year, you'll find peace and quiet, wide open vistas and nature at its very best.  You may even see parrots belonging to a local Conservation Charity flying about the town sometimes - keep a lookout for them on roof tops and chimneys! They often like sit in the conifer tree in next doors garden or sit on the roof of the shops opposite. Kirkby Stephen has a number of narrow passageways waiting to be explored, some of which lead down to the River Eden. There are some lovely riverside walks and Franks Bridge picnic area is a delightful spot to spend some time. Stenkrith Park, on the edge of town is a natural park with a deep river gorge. * The Northern Viaduct Round  is a fully accessible path following the disused Stainmore Railway with viaducts. * Smardale Gill National Nature Reserve  (a Site of Special Scientific Interest) has a walk with a spectacular viaduct and old lime kilns * Enjoy an exhilarating walk up to Nine Standards Rigg - nine very old and unique mysterious cairns on Hartley Fell * Several long distance routes  pass through or near Kirkby Stephen, including: Alfred Wainwright's Coast to Coast, Lady Anne's Way, Pennine Journey, The Eden Way and Yoredale way * Poetry Path - Twelve poems are hand carved onto stone, celebrating a year in the life of a hill farmer, along a two mile circular route either side of the River Eden * Geocaching: Six Geocaches are available along the Kirkby Stephen Poetry Path and can be searched via the Geocaching website
  • Great place to stay. Just off the front street. Everything you need inside and nice and clean. We were there for 3 nights and never heard a thing. Highly recommended.

  • Wonderful experience from start to finish. Anna is an excellent host. Very helpful and friendly, going the extra mile to make things as comfortable as possible. One of the best air B and B experiences I’ve had. I would definitely recommend staying at Anna’s.

  • Very handy location. Comfortable cottage. Great for people with dogs.

    Gillian2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • Anna was a great host & let us in slightly earlier than the normal check in, which was great & meant we got to meet her & get some local tips! Great location in the center of town, but still really peaceful & country like - with the log burner. Shower was fab & really powerful, there was also a full sized roll top bath. The cottage was actually deceptively spacious! We had a great time & can also vouch for the quality of the local shops - we bought Sunday lunch items from the local butchers & green grocers - which were very tasty. My partner also bought a pair of walking boots from the outdoors shop. So lots of variety & quality :)

    Charlotte2020-01-04T00:00:00Z
  • Anna's place was perfect for our needs being dog focussed. It's very quaint and comfortable, brilliant range of equipment in kitchen. Also location is fabulous, a lovely town amidst stunning scenery.

  • Anna’s place was perfect, quirky, cute and lots of character! It’s location is perfect for walking. We find it hard to get a place, particularly a place like Anna’s that will accept dogs! Log burner is fab, our dogs loved laying infront of it! Cute micro pub next door and the landlords are really helpful. We will for sure return!

Through the lounge you can access the bathroom and kitchen, both of which are a good size and offer all mod cons. In the kitchen there is a small fridge, electric cooker, microwave, kettle, toaster and espresso machine. There is also a breakfast bar and a door leading out to the beck down a few steps. • The cottage had everything we needed for a little romantic getaway after seeing family further north. We loved the huge, comfy bed and the view over the river. The fire kept us warm during the stormy weather. Thank you for having us!

  • Really nice place would strongly recommend. Clean. Cosy and well situated

  • Perfect for our short stay, lovely cottage in nice area.

    Samuel2019-10-19T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage was lovely and cosy. There was a log burner and plenty of heating although we were very lucky with the weather. The locals are lovely and it is close to a couple of pubs. The check in was very easy. There was a lovely balcony which we sat on and enjoyed a bacon sandwich on from the local cafe in the morning. The only criticism is the stairs are very steep but no problem if you are fit and healthy. Overall would thoroughly recommend

    Sophie2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage was great. Sparkling clean, probably the cleanest AirBnB I've stayed in.

    Rachel2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • My husband and I booked into Emanuela's cottage in Brough last minute as an extension to our honeymoon. Brough was a lovely little village with just a few pubs, a shop and chippy in. There was some lovely walks just at the end of the street and the house backed onto a little stream with a little waterfall at the bottom. The cottage had a little balcony attached that looks over the stream which we enjoyed sitting on while eating breakfast in the morning. The cottage itself had everything you could possibly need and we cooked tea + breakfast there. The house is also really warm once you've put the heated on and we enjoyed a cosy nights sleep. Emanuela was quick at replying and gave us all information we needed for the perfect stay - she even left a little present and congrats note which was a super lovely touch! I would highly recommend staying here!

    Hana2019-09-07T00:00:00Z
  • A comfortable little place, ideal for three people, in an excellent location. Very easy to get to. The beck at the back of the house is nice and we enjoyed being able to eat on the terrace. The beds are very comfortable and the facilities, heating and washing, are easy to use. Parking can be a little awkward but the neighbours are polite and helpful. If anyone wants to eat out in the village pubs or go to the chip shop they do tend to stop serving early so don't turn up at 8.30 pm and expect to be served.

    Martin2019-08-26T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely little cottage sitting right next to the beck. Lovely listening to the water running past. Unfortunately the weather meant we couldn’t sit out on the decking, but with the right weather, this would be lovely! Very clean, quiet and comfortable cottage.

Place has all we needed plus something more than expected A big thank you for such a great hospitality and care you have showered upon us.

  • A great getaway perfectly situated for exploring the Lakes or Pennines. There is little to no internet here, but that's kind of the point. Thanks again!

    James2019-09-17T00:00:00Z
  • The barn was very comfortable and well equipped. Beautiful location.

    Helen2019-07-28T00:00:00Z
  • Inexpensive, no-frills - but everything we needed for our stay and more. A nice warm welcome and thoughtful touches like a pint of milk in the fridge and a ‘welcome pack’ with recommended local pubs, places to visit, etc. They use the site for educational visits for children with special needs, so the money you’ll spend on your stay goes towards subsidising that work (also means there’s accessible facilities if you need them).

    Dave2019-07-27T00:00:00Z
  • Great stay at this nice little barn. I've just told Alex she is underselling the nice included touches like bedding & towel &not included with many barns). Great communications ahead of stay & good hosting during it.

    Francis2019-07-26T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay has been exacly what we were looking for for our hike in the North Pennines. Alexandra and her husband have been very nice even helping us to find a solution to an issue with our car. Fully equiped kitchen, confi beds and hot water located in the middle of nature but a very short drive to the towns around. No mobile phone signal or data available, there is wifi but the connection is very bad. It´s great to disconnect but a better wifi would be nice in order to plan routes, etc. 100% recommended.
