Your guide to Kilcunda

All About Kilcunda

Kilcunda is a small seaside town to the southeast of Melbourne known for its rocky headlands, seashell-studded beaches, grassy dunes and scenic coastlines. Take a bike tour and ride along the 23 kilometre Bass Coast Rail Trail, and then marvel at the panoramic views when you reach the Bass Strait. Along Bass Highway, you’ll find the town’s general store, plus a few local eateries, where you can grab fresh local produce, delicious meals, and coffee.

Head over to Kilcunda Surf Beach, a popular surfing spot, where you can watch experienced surfers catch the town’s iconic waves. Make your way to the Mouth of Powlett, where the slow-moving waters of the Powlett River make for a serene spot to kayak or fish. Known for its sand dunes, the Mouth of Powlett invites children and adults alike to enjoy a slide or two down the steep dunes. The local pub is a favoured gathering spot at the end of the day for a drink, hearty meal, live music, and an unbeatable sunset view.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Kilcunda

Though Kilcunda experiences fickle weather at times, the seaside town remains enjoyable throughout the year. Temperatures and humidity usually peak during January and February but tend to cool down during the evenings. You can expect comfortable temperatures and little rainfall January through March. In January, Kilcunda throws its annual Lobster Festival where you can play games and enjoy fresh-caught lobster. Between June and August, temperatures drop a bit, but they’re plenty comfortable as long as you pack a few layers to keep warm.

Top things to do in Kilcunda

George Bass Coastal Walk

Take in the beauty of the Bass Coast with a spectacular cliff-top walk. The 7-kilometre walk provides boundless views of the ocean, seaside cliffs, and rugged coastlines. From a distance, you can catch cattle grazing on lush green farmland. If you happen to visit between the months of May and November, you might see the spectacular annual whale migration.

Collecting Shells on Shelly Beach

Located right off Bass Highway is a local gem—Shelly Beach. As the name suggests, Shelly Beach is known for being embellished with seashells. Rocky headlands and tide pools brimming with shellfish, crabs, sea snails, and occasionally starfish line the shores of the beach. Spend time beachcombing through the shallow rock pools and walk along the secluded shoreline.

Bourne Creek Trestle Bridge

As you arrive at Bourne Creek, you will immediately see the towering Bourne Creek Trestle Bridge. Turquoise water, golden sand, and vibrant green shrubbery serve as the backdrop to this striking structure. Constructed in 1911 for the Victorian Railways, the Trestle Bridge is now an iconic landmark in the area. Walk or bike along the lofty bridge for a stunning panoramic view of the beach and hinterlands. Use one of the beach accesses to head down to Kilcunda Beach, where you can admire its seashell-adorned shoreline.
