Places to stay in Inch Island
The Library is to be found on secluded Inch Island 15 minutes drive from Derry. Take a step back in time into an atmosphere reminiscent of J.R.R Tolkien's Hobbit hole. On the ground level of a large historic property (c.1608), with modern comforts, guests are invited to rest, read and write but also to enjoy the nature the island has to offer. Reviews: "If you are worried that there is no way the pictures will match up to the actual property...you are in for a surprise. From the moment you set foot inside the library, you are overcome with a real sense of peace." "I think being surrounded by so many books and having the fire crackling away. Well, it makes for a unique experience. There are also lovely walks around Inch Island too. If you want a weekend away from the grind, this would be ideal."
  • Amazing place to stay if you’re touring up north. So cozy, definitely plan on staying multiple nights if you want a nice time away from the hustle and bustle. Loved it and would come back soon!

  • This place is amazing! It’s even more amazing than the photos. A heated warm cozy bed, a roaring fire, and books everywhere. The architectural details at the Library are very impressive.

  • The library is great! Super cozy by the fire and Bill is kind and knowledgeable. :)

    Grace2020-02-21T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful and quaint. A lovely relaxing stay surrounded by books and a wood burning stove. What more could you ask for? Bill was a wonderful host, from tips on local eateries and attractions to milk left on the doorstep for the much cherished first morning coffee, he couldn't do more to ensure we were comfortable. Inishowen is a beautiful area to explore and we had a great trip. Thanks Bill 👍

  • Great time at the library. The most beautiful & unique stay we have ever had. Thanks Bill!

  • Wonderful unique space to get away from it all

    Deirdriú2020-01-31T00:00:00Z
  • This place is such an unusual find! If you're after peace, quiet and a lot of books to read, then this ticks all of those boxes. We found it really cosy, even in the middle of January. We didn't get to meet Bill this time but he'd prepared the place very well for us and was very helpful and communicative during our stay.

A very relaxed and peaceful area with stunning sea views!
  • Rhona's space is exactly as described. The view is beautiful. We found everything clean, the shower was great and the space heating was also working perfectly. In the kitchen we found everything we needed to prepare our meal. The place offers a washing machine, but it is necessary to bring your own soap. We had an inconvenience with the wifi password (which is not written in the space is only provided on the day of check in via message), because on the day of check in, we spent all day on the road, so we had no internet to check e-mails and messages and so we are left without the wifi password. So, if you are going to be without internet on the day, I advise you to ask for the password first. Besides, everything was great.

    Michelle2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • Great spot, superb view and very comfortable. We had dinner at the Railway Tavern which was excellent. Rhona was very helpful.

  • Lovely sparkling clean apartment with view over lough Swilly from living area and master bedroom with balcony. Comfy beds. Very modern with well equipped kitchen and lovely living space to chill out in. Nice touch that the Christmas tree was up (13 Dec) to make it feel homely and get us in Christmas spirit. Good base for exploring inishowen and beyond.

  • You will be greeted by the host upon check in. Matthew’s place is very clean and cost. The place is very comfortable and it is very close to a town where you do your grocery shopping. Strongly recommend to people who’s having road trip from Letterkenny to north Ireland. Will definitely stay at their place again if I am here in donegal.

This is a two storey five bedroom property located within walking distance to a secluded beach on Inch Island. The property has ample parking, an outside decking area and fish pond water feature. Inside, there are two sitting rooms, five bedrooms and kitchen area.
Inch Island a small island of about five square miles, lies just off the Donegal coast at Burt at the start of the Inishowen peninsula and is accessed by a causeway road. It is a quiet place with beautiful scenery: from the Burt side looking to the ancient fort of Grianan of Aileach, high on the hill above Burt, to views across the Swilly and views to the marina at Fahan and Inishowen's main town, Buncrana. The island boasts a world renown wildlife sanctuary - Inch Lake, home to swans, geese and many other species of migratory bird. There is a purpose built wildlife walking trail (4.8 mile) around the lake taking in stunning views of the wildlife and fauna with wildlife viewing huts for bird watchers and photographers. Inch Wildfowl Reserve is viewpoint along the Wild Atlantic Way. There are the ruins of an old castle on the island which was once the property of the O'Doherty Clan of Inishowen. The castle is built on a cliff edge overlooking the Swilly and dates from about the mid 15th century and although it is mostly ruins there are parts of it still in good repair. Close by is Inch Pier, suitable for sea fishing, sailing and swimming.
  • Everything was very nice and beautiful:) highly recommend!

  • Bernard is a charming host and very welcoming. He offered us a nice tea upon our arrival and was interested in our trip while advising us on many itineraries. The place is absolutely beautiful and atypical, isolated, quiet and on an island! This is a nice house tastefully decorated. I highly recommend !

    Rémy2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • Stayed at Bernard's place again. This is my third visit. Great place to getaway off the beaten track but still within minutes of Buncrana, Letterkenny and Derry. Great location. Guaranteed a solid nights sleep. Breakfast included, great host, great value and great location.

  • Stayed again at Bernard's place on Inch Island in Donegal. This is a very scenic and peaceful spot off the beaten track. Bernard's house is spotlessly clean and a great place to stay at the end of a long day. Would definitely recommend and revisit this house again when I am in the area.

    George2019-10-08T00:00:00Z
  • Bernard is an outstanding host, very welcoming with plenty of local knowledge. His place is fantastic, large bedroom with the comfiest of beds. Would recommend staying here.

  • Bernard has built a beautiful home that is modern, clean, and comfortable. It is ideally located on scenic Inch Island. He gave us a summary of all the area’s attractions and pointed us in the right direction. Bernard is very accommodating and offered us the use of his washer/dryer — and his kitchen.

    Tim2019-09-27T00:00:00Z
  • Had a fantastic stay at Bernard's place. This is a very scenic and quiet location on Inch Island in Donegal and Bernard's house is quite spacious and spotlessly clean.. Bernard is a very friendly host and a great conversationalist. Would definitely recommend and revisit if available when I am staying in the area again. Thanks Brendan for sharing your home with me.

  • Paul was so quick to help me when we got lost. He thoroughly explained everything we needed to know and recommended some great options. The Wii was a nice touch to end the evening in this beautiful place. Waking up to the views was more than I could have thought it could be, pictures don't do it justice! Thank you Paul! If I am ever in Ireland, in Fahan again, I will be back for sure! Cheers!

  • The most amazing view you will have at a stay in Ireland. The barn is fantastic! Jacinta had the fire going as we arrived, and we couldn't have been happier. It had everything we could've hoped for and was so cute and cozy. We regret that we only stayed for one night and kept talking about how we wish we stayed longer. Great bed, kitchen area, and fun to spend time around the fire. Everything in town is just a short walk away. Pubs, food, store, etc. Jacinta was great keeping in contact with and her two dogs are fun to give pets to. Visit the White Harte (pub) in town. Tish and Connell (owners of pub) were a blast to talk to. We stayed there for 4-5 hours into the night. Make a trip up to the lighthouse as well. Connell does bus trips from Rathmullan to the lighthouse every day.

    Stefan2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • We really liked the Barn--it has an excellent vibe about it. The owners, who are very kind hosts, have clearly taken care to create a unique space filled with interesting objects. The view is astounding, and I can only imagine what it would be like in fair weather. But we were quite content to sit by the fire and listen to the wind rage outside. The Beachcomber is a welcoming place to have a pint and read the Sunday papers, and posher digs are available at Rathmullan House. We were very happy with our stay.

    Nancy2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • Just returned from our stay at the Barn in Rathmullan. Jacinta & Dermot were wonderful hosts and provided us with an unique guest experience in their charming and quirky converted barn, set right on the beach overlooking Lough Swilly. Lovely sunsets and sun rises and unrivalled views over the water. We are looking forward our return.

  • Everything and more than what you see on the website. Spotless, good quality furniture and gorgeous little touches makes Tony’s apartment the best property you will stay in. Tony is very quick at responding. I have to say I found Tony’s instructions on check in etc the easiest I’ve encountered yet. I have no hesitation in recommending this apartment and hope to return again. There really is everything you could want in a holiday apartment and much more

One room in our 115 year old cottage on Inch Island - nestled in the lake of shadows take time to relax and walk the beaches, or a good hike up the hill for unparalleled views of Donegal. We are 8 kilometres from the nearest shop and pub so if you enjoy rural getaways this is a good spot! We share our home with farm volunteers who help on the farm throughout the summer as well as our house cat and some pipestrelle bats in the roof!
The cottage is 115 years old this year, and was actually the first home on the island to have a slate roof! We live on the ground floor of the cottage, we have one room for Airbnb guests upstairs (with a small shower room/toilet attached to the guest bedroom) as well an extra room for volunteers when they stay (a large day bed). Our two cats roams the house (with exception to the guest bedroom!) It's worth enquiring if there's more than two of you or you need an extra bed for little ones, as we don't always have volunteers and we don't charge anything extra for use of the 2nd room - just let us know in advance! :) We also have protected bats in the roof and you can see them flying outside at dusk! The bats are small pipistrelle bats and they're a protected species so they are the newest edition to the art house and you can hear them squeaking from one of the bedrooms! If you love wildlife I'm sure they'll be another edition. The sea is just 200 metres away, with the island spanning 5 miles in diameter (Inch Island is connected to the island via a land bridge, accessible 24/7, 365 days a year). If you enjoy painting or photography there are plenty of places to sit and create. We have a library full of art/photography/fashion/design books so feel free to sit and browse. We live next to a working family farm with work dogs. The wood fired stove heats the water and radiators with the added benefit of an oil fired heater if you don't feel like stoking the fire, but with the sometimes chilly Irish weather we'll always have the heating on. Wifi & Coffee are on tap: 4G always on router and (almost) infinite supply of coffee to keep the fireside stories flowing. Oh, and plenty of fuel for the fire too!
Inch Island comes from the Irish word 'inis', which simply means 'island'. So you'll be staying on 'Island Island', situated in Loch Súilí, or 'The Lake of Shadows'. The lake is actually an inlet of the Atlantic ocean, the name derived from the waters surface continually shifting in shapes, with dolphins, seals and (on occasion!) orcas that make their way into the inlet. As the lake is protected from the wilder Atlantic waves kayaking along the shore can be a beautiful experience, and the views from the top of the island accessed via the family farm are breathtaking.
  • We do not have the words - you have to experience that yourself. Sea view, unique bathroom, great hospitality, helpful, uncomplicated, flexible, great cats and much more ....

  • We loved the gorgeous countryside and the sounds of the sheep in the field as well as all the friendly animals. Dominic and Hannah were exceptional hosts and chatted about their visits abroad as well. They know just what someone would need for a nice stay. Thank you so much also for the colourful organic eggs and homemade bread!

    Ruth2018-05-15T00:00:00Z
  • At Dominic & Hannah, we felt like friends, not customers. Friends who invited us to share their dinner we had arrived. The location of their charming house is ideal, surrounded by nature at the edge of the water. This leg of our trip was unique and will remain an exceptional memory of the meetings possible by AirBnb.

  • We really enjoyed our stay at the cottage - it was a very different get away from the city and Dominic, Hannah and their cat were just lovely. The room was cosy, toilet was slightly small but manageable !! We reached slightly late around 930pm, but Hannah was at the door with her welcoming smile which was just superb... Thanks guys !!

The location is fantastic and the house had everything we needed. There are plenty of beaches and nice walks close by. Thanks again for having us Noelle!

  • Ideal location for a mid way point of the Wild Atlantic Way. The mobile home also has all the facilities necessary one would need to be comfortable. It was really nice to come back in the evenings and light a fire, even though it wasn’t really necessary as the mobile home was warm enough

  • Shaun was a lovely host and went out of his way to drop in a travel cot for our toddler. It was a lovely, cosy and quiet place for the three of us to stay without want for anything else. Edna and Shaun were also very quick to respond to messages. We hope to be back again.

  • A lovely place, ideal for a small family like ours. Tucked away but very close to the beach and a gentle walk into Rathmullan. Warm, well decorated and usefully equipped. It's a simple place, but all the better for it.

    Adam2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • Myself my fiancé and our dog had a lovely stay at Edna’s property. The mobile home is so modern and spacious , definitely does not feel like a caravan . Great use of space and amenities . We only stayed for 2 nights but it has all the facilities for a much longer stay which is something uncommon in a mobile home. Would recommend to all! (Bed also very comfortable :) )

Quaint three bedroom bungalow on the stunning Inch Island with spectacular views of Lough Swilly and the ruins of a Castle! Off road parking available for 2/3 cars. Large kitchen, living room, dining room and patio - perfect for entertaining. Recently renovated. Dog friendly!
Glen's Bungalow went through a major renovation in autumn 2017. The attic was converted to create two new bedrooms (a double and a single). There is also a double bedroom down stairs. The kitchen is large with a gas hob top, oven, microwave, fridge freezer, Bosch coffee machine and washing machine. The bathroom is situated on the ground floor and is a wet room. The living/dining area is open plan with a dining table which seats 6, a corner sofa, open fire, CD player, new TV and numerous books, CDs and DVDs. The patio area is perfect for BBQs and there is a BBQ available to use. The garden is very large and perfect for kids and dogs exploring!
Inch Island is a small residential island with some working farms and fishing boats. There are no shops or pubs on Inch, making it the perfect escape into the semi-wilderness. Inch has three beaches: The Mill Bay, The Fort and Brown's Shore. All of these are accessible by car. The ruins of a castle which you can see from the living room window was originally The O'Doherty clan stronghold and can be accessed (with some difficulty) from the shore line.
  • Glen's bungalow was a lovely place to stay. The house is huge, the kitchen in particular was really great. Inch island is beautiful and it's close to all of innishowen. We were also close enough to drive to fanad head lighthouse. Great location and great house

    Neil2019-11-04T00:00:00Z
  • Glen's is our favourite place we have stayed in Donegal! We always love visiting new dog-friendly accommodation and Aoife's place is just the best. The house is old on the outside, but modern on the inside, with beautiful views of Lough Swilly and the Ó Dochartaigh castle ruins from the living room. It's a cosy haven in peaceful surroundings, but is still very close to Buncrana and Derry for activities, eating out, nightlife, etc. The checking-in process was smooth and all amenities were in top working order. We saw swans in the island's wildfowl reserve and dolphins at nearby Fort Dunree, and our dogs had an absolute ball on Inishowen's many beaches. We can't wait to return to Inch Island and Glen's Bungalow!

    Andrew2019-10-28T00:00:00Z
  • A bright and tastefully modernised bungalow close to the sea shore with stunning views over farmland, a ruined castle and the ever-changing, atmospheric Lough Swilly. The perfect place to unwind and get away from it all! Enjoy local and migrant birdlife as you walk around the local wildlife reserve and stretch your legs on the loop walk round Inishowen Head, with views to Scotland on a clear day. For wetsuited adventurers, there's safe swimming in Atlantic waters at beaches such as Stroove and Marble Hill on the clean, unspoiled and almost deserted Donegal coastline.

    Lorna2019-09-24T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely space with stunning views. We had a great time with lovely breakfast on the deck. Our dog had a particularly lovely time!

    Elise2019-08-13T00:00:00Z
  • We've had a fantastic stay at Glen's bungalow. It is a well presented house with incredible views over lough swilly. The house had everything needed and Aoife was quick to reply to any questions or problems. We will hope to come back next year! Thank you.

    Alice2019-08-06T00:00:00Z
  • Glen's cottage is exceptionally beautiful! It's perfectly renovated, clean and decorated with love. It's located very private on a beautiful island. The view from the patio is stunning! Aoife was explaining very clear and details everything you need to know and also gave good infos about nearby places ( check her AirBnB) We definitely would go there again!!

Place is very quirky in an old church building brightly painted purple with the infamous Prince symbol so very easy to spot! Lovely wee sitting area outside too which was great for morning coffee.

  • What a wonderful surprise when arriving in this place. Everything was perfect and beautiful with a superb bay view. That the reception of Celine and her husband, the room beyond our expectations, the brightness of the place, the breakfast, the village and its beach .... everything was impeccable. We hope to return one day in Donegal to see the sites we missed .... we have to choose a few the first time. We will return there without any hesitation. As far as the ferry leaves from this small town to go to inishewen. Perfect ... really perfect.

Their home sits on top of a hill overlooking the bay and it’s a short walk up from town - easy to walk down for a delicious meal at one of the towns several quaint and stylish establishments. It’s the cutest little town with a great deal of charm and ambiance. Celine’s room is en suite with all the amenities you could ever want, from playing cards and local tips to a mini fridge full of welcoming breakfast goodies. The shower is big and powerful and clean - the perfect evening welcome from a long day on the Wild Atlantic Way! Then you can sit on the balcony with a glass of wine and watch the sun go down over the fields of sheep with the sea beyond- bliss! Everything about this Airbnb is top notch! I’d recommend it wholeheartedly!

  • Fab location, suited us great for our trip to Rathmullan. Would highly recommend.

    Donnacha2019-09-24T00:00:00Z
  • We had the expectations of a quiet girls weekend away and was just happy to change our scenery from Dublin to Donegal. Let’s just say we might not have had the highest expectations but this was more than perfect. Wine & gin in the sunroom watching the view, movie nights accompanied by a fire and the comfiest beds and bedding. I brought my one year old pup, Watson a lab cross as well - let’s just say I was a bit unsure if he would come back with me. He loved the forest walks, running along the beach and of course swimming. The amount of people that came up and said hi or just admired him was the icing on the cake so think he would trade Donegal for Dublin any day of the week! I can highly recommend Maura’s place and hope I will be back soon.

    Joanna2019-09-08T00:00:00Z

  • Maura's beach house is the ideal Rathmullan stay: perfectly located, parking, and VIEWS!! Couldn't be happier.

    Desiree2019-09-30T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely house facing on to Lough Swilly. Check in was very straight forward and Maura called around to check all was ok. A nice touch was the scones which had been left out for our arrival. Really good location convenient to bars and restaurants and the beach. As other reviewers have previously noted the house is adjacent to a bar which can be noisy when there is live music, which was the case for one night of our stay, however the music finished promptly at one am. However the location and value for money more than makes up for this. A big plus for us was being able to bring our dog. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a holiday in Rathmullan.

    Jonathan2019-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • Very warm hosts and surroundings. Perfect location for amenities and scenic views. Very clean and spacious. A thoroughly enjoyable and peaceful stay.

  • Maura's house is a great place to stay. The location is ideal for touring around, and the house itself is well equipped and very spacious. The views from the house across the lough are breathtaking. Highly recommended. Geoff and Dee

    Geoff2019-07-11T00:00:00Z
  • Maura's place is a great find! It has the best view in Rathmullen, looking out over the loch on three sides from the little sun room, and makes for a relaxing and cosy retreat. Our late arrival was completely accommodated and we were welcomed with delicious homemade scones baked by Maura's mother, Kathleen, who also came round in person to say hello and made sure we had everything we needed. The location is excellent for walking along the beach and there is a private and secure parking space. Comfy ensuite bedroom and a whole kitchen and living room, with open fireplace, to ourselves! Excellent value. We would stay again! Highlight: waking up to hear the waves lapping against the harbour wall at high tide.

    Pascal2019-05-20T00:00:00Z

  • What can I say....this place was absolutely stunning. We had absolutely everything there we could ever need. The views are breathtaking, situated just a short stroll from the beach and a beautiful restaurant ‘The Red Door’ a short distance away. We had such a relaxing weekend, thank you for everything Claire, I will be highly recommending your place to my family and friends :)

  • Clare's house is a wonderful base from which to explore Donegal. It's a great place to get back to after a busy day of exploring the local area. The views are fantastic from up on the hill, i got a round of golf in at North West GC which is just 2 mins down the road. The kids went to the beach in Buncrana and we also managed to get up to Fort Dunree and Genevan Waterfall which are both around 30 mins away. Would highly recommend this place for a relaxing week away.

INCH ISLAND 5 square miles of pure Donegal wild beauty. This island is the perfect scenery for walks and miles of beautiful beaches. We are a short & beautiful 1 mile walk from Inch Pier or stroll down the road and find a beach to wander all to yourselves. Inch Wildfowl Reserve Nature Walk: Situated in the shadow of Scalp Mountain on the eastern shores of Lough Swilly, tucked neatly behind Inch Island, you will find Inch Wildfowl Reserve. The combination within this site of extensive feeding areas and safe resting and roosting sites makes this site one of the most important wetlands in the country for wintering waterfowl. This site is situated to the east of Lough Swilly. It supports a wide diversity of wintering waterfowl, notably swans and geese, as well as breeding terns, gulls, waders and duck. BUNCRANA We are only a 12 minute drive from the beautiful town of Buncrana. Our favorite pub for pints and fish & chips, THE DRIFT INN is here along with one of our favorite breakfast spots TANK & SKINNYS. DERRY 20 minutes from the city center of Derry in the North of Ireland. Derry, also known as Londonderry, is a city on the River Foyle in Northern Ireland. It’s known for the intact 17th-century Derry’s Walls with 7 gates. Within the walls, spired St. Columb’s Cathedral displays artefacts from the 1688–9 Siege of Derry. Near the Peace Bridge, the Tower Museum has city views and historical exhibits. Huge stained-glass windows adorn the neo-Gothic red sandstone Guildhall. Great pubs, coffee shops and restaurants too!
  • What a hidden gem. This place has had so much thought put in to it. The host Kelsey was there from the start showing us around the area. The whole place is so warm and welcoming. The cabin itself was just amazing. The pictures don’t do it justice- and the bed is soooo comfy. I’d recommend this to anyone who is looking for a relaxing break away from their busy schedules (as i already have!). The complimentary bottle of wine was a lovely touch. Despite the horrible weather, we had a great time adventuring around the island to the picturesque pier nearby. We will definitely be back! Thanks for having us, Josh and Emma

  • Had an absolute amazing night here at the Glack house. Kelsey and Keith have done an absolutely amazing job. Everything is well done from the cabins to the communal bathrooms. beautiful place to stay in the winter so I can only imagine what this place looks like in the summer. We had a very welcoming experience from the hosts they were both so helpful. we had so many messages from people asking where we were staying. would definitely recommend the glack house to everyone and I think it would make an amazing wedding venue. The place was enchanting, we loved every little detail in the cabins from the complimentary bottle of wine to the record player and guitar. The private bar was was so unique listening to the storm while the opening fire was blazing. We look forward to our next stay here. Thanks for sharing your home.

A period home overlooking the sea. The room is a spacious newly renovated ensuite bedroom with private entrance separate from the house. Beautifully furnished with large walk in shower and walk in wardrobe, TV, tea and coffee making facilities. The decor of the room is very modern and completely different to the period decor of the main property.
We provide all linen, towels, toiletries. Lots of parking space. The room is very spacious, large walk in shower, private and situated behind the main house. we operate a Bed & Breakfast in the main house. Guests in the Annex can request breakfast in the main house for an additional fee.
We are within easy walking distance of 2 excellent restaurants and bars at The Firebox Grill in The Railway Tavern and The Red Door Country Club. The Marina and beach is also just a few mins walk from the house. Buncrana town is 5klm and Derry is 10klm
  • Viola and Noel were very welcoming. Beautiful house. Ended up staying in a room within the main house and this was beautiful clean room.
