Red cinder leads you through the dense jungle to your secluded bamboo treehouse. Nestled on top of stilts 15' up in the canopy of the local flora, ascend to your retreat via the trapdoor or begin your adventure in Volcano National Park 10 miles away.
Upon arrival, let the red cinder path be your yellow brick road as you are lead through the jungle to your personal paradise. At ground level you will encounter a hanging bed, suspended beneath the floor of your new living quarters. Stop and relax or continue up the staircase to the trapdoor. It is through this trapdoor that you are allowed access to the lanai amongst the canopy of trees. A beautiful wrap around lanai allows for a 360 degree view of the lush jungle, while two sliding glass doors grant access to the bedroom. Upon entering, you will notice that the generous windows and doors allow for natural sunlight to flood into the house, complementing the bamboo fixtures and vintage 1970s wallpaper that backs the bed. The white bed linens reflect the light giving a dreamy, cloud-like aura to the space. There is counter stocked with a local coffee and snacks nestled into a corner of the house and overlooked by the handcrafted porthole windows. Bamboo backed cubby holes and hangers furnish the wall behind you and create an elegant, minimalist closet space for you to store your personal items for the duration of your stay. Just past the closet is a sliding door that accesses one of the most fun areas of the house: the bathroom. The bathroom jalousie windows stretch from the floor to the ceiling and the horizontal glass plates open up, creating an indoor-outdoor effect. Naturally caught rainwater cascades from the large shower head above before disappearing into the floor boards below. You'll notice that the natural theme spills over into the bathroom with sustainable cork board backing the shower and air plants intermittently growing throughout. The toilet and hand-made rock sink in the corner make use of grey water eco-principles by allowing you to wash your hands with fresh water before it goes on to fill the bowl. One of the most fun aspects of this property is that it allows you the opportunity to experience true off-grid living without sacrificing any of the comforts of normal life. Natural lighting, solar power and rain water catchment are the three principles that have been integrated into this tree top design, making it almost like a living organism itself. The beauty of this high flying haven is in the details. I spent the better part of three months personally constructing the building as well as the accessories inside. My goal was to create a customized and secluded space for your occasion. The chandelier, hanging lights, port-hole windows, rock sink and platform bed were all DIY projects that I specifically created to enhance your experience. The bamboo pillars that 'support' the lanai and the moss carpet under the hanging bed were harvested from local areas on the Big Island. IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS BEFORE MAKING A RESERVATION Don't worry, the capital letters are just to emphasize importance. I'm not mad at you. But please read this entire section before making a reservation. As lush and inviting as the Dreamy Tropical Treehouse is, there are inevitable 'challenges' that come with staying in an off-grid treehouse in the Hawaiian jungle. My goal is to give you an experience that combines adventure and luxury so I want to make sure that you are aware of the following things: 1. The treehouse is about 15-feet off the ground and is only accessible by the 'ladder-stairs'. 'Ladder-stairs' is just another way of saying 'very steep' stairs. There is a hand railing and none of my visitors have ever had a problem going up and down. There is a pulley system for hoisting up your bags. Only those who believe they are physically capable should book a stay. Just remember to go up and down the stairs facing them... like a ladder! 2. The running water comes from the rain falling on the roof and is not treated; therefore, the water is not potable. I will provide several bottles of drinking water. 3. The electricity you use is generated by sunlight and is stored in a battery. Once the battery runs out of power it has to recharge. This shouldn’t happen but just be mindful not to leave lights or power hungry items running for extended periods of time (No hairdryers). The windows allow for plenty of light during the day. 4. This is the rainy side of the Big Island so expect some showers! Realize that the pitter-patter on the roof is the rain's first stop on its journey to the water tanks and then to your shower. Also notice how warm it is. Don't think of rain as a trip ruiner but instead an asset to be enjoyed! 5. There are bugs but this isn't the Amazon. For such a tropical climate you will be surprised at how few bugs there are. The main things you will see are moths, fruit flies (due to fruit falling off of the trees) and mosquitoes. Bug repellent is provided but it never hurts to bring your own. They really don't get that bad but their presence increases after a hard rain and during the twilight hours. Luckily, the hanging bed has mosquito netting that drapes down to encompass it. 6. Noises. Living off-grid in the jungle also brings about its own set of noises. The water pump and solar inverter will make soft noises throughout the day as they are used. The falling fruit from the vivie trees can also be alarming if you don't know what it is, and at night you are going to be serenaded by the sweet chirping of coqui frogs. Rustling branches, grunts and squeals typically means that the cute family of wild pigs is nearby. They are harmless and will runoff as soon as they sense your presence. Quietly grab the binoculars and, if you are lucky, you may catch a glimpse of them! All of these aspects are what makes this place so unique and, with the right mindset, they’ll only enhance your overall experience. Guests have free range to fully utilize every aspect of the house. The hanging bed, wrap-around porch, indoor-outdoor shower and closet are at your full disposal. I have recently installed a kitchenette that has a sink, cooler for storing food/drinks, and a coffee maker (also capable of heating up water). Any and all goodies stocked in the house are there for your enjoyment. Here is a more comprehensive list of amenities and features that will be available to you: •Indoor/Outdoor Shower •Toilet with Overlaid Sink •Organic Shampoo/Conditioner •Towels •Ample Parking •Tiki Torch ‘Flashlights’ •Hanging Bed •Table and Chairs for Lanai •Binoculars •Several Books •Outlets (3-prong and USB) •Kitchen Sink •Coffee Maker •Clean Linens •Gramophone Music Player for iPhones •Cooler for Food/Drink •Card Game Guest interaction can be tailored to your needs. My goal is to make sure your stay is unforgettable so you can always contact me via phone or email. Because I do not live on the island year round, a local neighbor can assist you if you have any problems that need tending to. Upon your arrival I can arrange to have someone greet you and show you the property or simply stow away the key for your convenience. The choice, of course, is yours. Even though I am not on site, I can always be reached. Feel free to call/text/email me at any time during your stay should the unlikely event that a problem arises. I will immediately contact the proper authority to have the problem remedied. The treehouse is located at the end of a neighborhood street making it very private. It is set about 50 yards off the street behind a windy, jungle path further adding to your privacy. There are only about five full time neighbors scattered throughout the neighborhood so don't expect to see a lot of people. The treehouse is about 20 miles from Hilo, 23 miles from Pahoa, 12 miles from Keaau and 8 miles from Volcano. Volcano is the closest place for laundry, good restaurants and groceries, though you will pay a little more for the groceries than in Hilo or Keaau. I recommend you stop on your way in from Hilo. When you book I will include a guidebook that has the locations, hours and prices of local restaurants and grocery stores. There is quick access to highway 11 and it is 10 miles from Volcanoes National Park. Numerous opportunities for sightseeing and adventures are within a 40 minute drive of this treehouse paradise and they will be included in my guest guidebook as well. This is the ultimate spot for couples seeking romantic seclusion in the middle of a tropical jungle or individuals who want to escape the world. Unless you feel like hitchhiking, you will definitely need a rental car with high ground clearance to comfortably explore the surrounding areas and access the treehouse. While nothing is 'far' on the big island, everything is just a bit out of reach by foot... except of course for those lovely, yet dense, jungle strolls.

  • Really incredible place to stay. Make sure to try at least one night.

  • The tree house was awesome! What a magical experience in nature in Hawaii! The tree house was just like the pictures, and the frogs outside were great to fall asleep to. I was a bit apprehensive of bugs, but the screens kept the bugs out just fine. The only reason I took a star off of this review was because the bed sheets and pillows smelled strongly of mildew. I understand that Hawaii is a moist climate so this may be unavoidable. If you are someone who has mold or mildew allergies, consider that before booking. Otherwise we had a great stay!

  • No matter how breathtaking you think this listing is, just wait until you see it in person! Pictures can’t capture just how perfect this place is!

  • This is a magical place, you can't ignore your inner child when you're at the tree house. You have all the privacy in the world and it's a place where you truly connect with nature. Loved it!

  • We had a wonderful time at Kristie's beautiful tree house. The house and the location are quite spectacular! Not only did we enjoy the beautiful house in the wilderness but we also truly enjoyed the little things like the apt books and games she had left for us. My wife really enjoyed showering with the view of the wilderness 🤭. Also, special mention for her hospitality and ease of check-in and out, everything was very smooth. Would definitely recommend this experience! Thanks Kriste! 😃

  • Stay here. Just do it. If you love the outdoors and just getting way, this is the spot for you. Communication was a breeze and finding it was easy because she literally covered any questions/needs that could have come up. Beautiful spot.

This is a custom designed treehouse, built by the same crew you see in Treehouse Masters on TV. The Jurassic attitude of the rainforest is preserved on the grounds. We also have a wedding venue nearby you may view in the photos. Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park borders the end of the street but can be accessed only through the main gate about two miles away. *** 2019 notes: There is no surface lava at this time. Our air quality is now some of the best anywhere. There are scant emissions from the volcano. Steam comes out of the ground, signs of the hot magma below. The steam is not VOG. There is currently no eruption. There are no signs an eruption is coming, or restarting. Volcanoes are unpredictable but they do give signs before going into action. Those signs typically are increased seismicity over a period of weeks and months, and sometimes years. No signs currently. The changes in the park due to the last eruption cannot be shown other than in imax format- they are that enormous. This is an excellent time to visit. Notes regarding cancellation and changes: please read the policy as published. Airbnb writes the policies and all of us must adhere to them. If you are feeling a need to cancel, you may wish to reconsider and change dates instead or discuss all options with us directly before deleting your reservation. Mahinui Na Lani hangs in ohia trees growing over a lava tube in the rainforest that extends into Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The treehouse was conceived as a companion to our rainforest pavilion, a Bali style structure a couple of blocks away, intended as an intimate wedding venue. Both may be reserved, and there are a couple of photos of the pavilion included in this series. The treehouse is accessed via a path that is about 100 meandering feet in the forest, lava boulders set into the side of the lava tube, and ladders. The ascent is somewhat steep once you reach the lava rocks. For your safety and comfort, we provide day packs to transfer whatever clothing is needed for your stay from your luggage into the abode. There is a special recessed corner dedicated to your stuff, with hooks for clothes, and a couple of night stands with drawers that can hold less bulky items. It's Hawaii, and the climate is mild, the atmosphere everywhere very casual. We also provide bathrobes. The treehouse itself is built on two levels, connected via a ship's ladder. The main level includes the living room, with two chairs and an ottoman, flat screen for viewing films & playing CDs, built in indoor window table & stools, small kitchen, outdoor shower, and composting toilet & vanity. The indoor fireplace is a Jotul propane stove vented to the outside. Outdoors on the lanai there is a cedar hot tub, and a teak table and chairs for al fresco dining in the trees. The upper level is also upper canopy, with birds actually flying around beneath you sometimes. There is a queen sized bed with a memory foam mattress, the tiny "closet corner" and another lanai. The windows other than the french doors onto the lanai are stained glass, made by a local artist. There is no kitchen. There are plates and utensils so you can bring in take out and enjoy your meal either indoors or outdoors in solitude. There is a sink so your plates and utensils may be cleaned. You can make hot beverages. There is a French press and a tea pot. We encourage you to enjoy the nearby restaurants and recognize the treehouse experience is not a cooking experience. This is not by our choice but a change we are forced to make to comply with anti-vacation rental legislation on our island. We are unable to know precisely what restaurants are offering take out but at this writing Kilauea Lodge does so, and the Thai food truck seems still to be operational. We invite you to consult Experience Volcano for up to date notices about meal services. The house was built primarily of recycled materials. The fir floors and redwood and cedar siding were once a church. This particular area is adjacent to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where Kilauea has been active for decades. If you are reserving in the near future, it is likely the park itself will be closed. There are however hiking trails outside the park, particularly on Mauna Loa. Please disregard the information in this notice as to places to go, for the duration of the restrictions on island. Please follow all laws as to keeping the effects of the virus to a minimum. There are hiking trails in and around the park through rainforest, desert, volcanic devastation, even a path with footprints preserved from an eruption over a hundred years ago. There are petroglyphs. Less than a mile from the treehouse there is Volcano Village, with restaurants and art galleries, a couple of places to buy gas. The entrance park itself is about two miles away. The neighborhood is rainforest, with many unbuilt upon lots. The reason there is no view of the treehouse through the forest is because the rainforest is very dense. There is the floor, very jungly with ginger, native ferns, and trees. Mid canopy are the tree ferns, some twenty feet tall, and over a hundred years old. The upper canopy is a mixture of ohia trees with red lehua flowers, Hawaiian holly, and others. We are asked from time to time if more than two people can stay in the treehouse. We can especially understand that families would like to bring their children to share this experience. The treehouse is a two person space. Everything is designed to be a honeymoon experience. While it is possible for more than two people to sit together and chat, only two can sleep over. There is no rollaway bed, nor is there room for one or for any other furniture beyond what is there already. Hall of Fame: The treehouse has been featured in Extreme Cribs, on episode 13. The Ellen Show: Kim Douglas's Tropical Vacation Ke Ola Magazine Volcano Tree House story in July - August 2011 edition Trip Advisor: One of the Ten Most Romantic Places to Stay (global selections) PureWow feature Treehouses of the World, Travel Channel European segment, by Treehouse Masters series Buzzfeed blogs and news articles published globally You will have access to the entire property, including the small structure below the treehouse near where you park your car. You may safely lock your luggage inside that room and use the day packs inside during your stay. If you use a CPAP machine, please contact us prior to making a reservation. There is only one treehouse on the property. We live nearby and come by regularly to maintain the treehouse. It is likely we will meet you on arrival. Otherwise, we are available by cell phone, text, email. When we are away, someone else who lives locally will be available to greet you and take care of your needs. The treehouse requires daily attention because it is off grid. This is generally done between 11 am and 4 pm, and most guests are away for that portion of the day. We do ask that if you are staying all day at the treehouse, that you communicate with us to let us know when one of us can come up and take care of the place. The neighborhood is mostly old growth rainforest with a few houses here and there. When you drive up, you will notice there are neighbors across the street and next door. You will forget about them once you walk through the moongate and enter the world of the treehouse. Sometimes of a late afternoon and evening you may hear a local hula halau practicing. We hope you find the sounds of laughter and Hawaiian language and music adds to the ambience. A rental car is a necessity. While there is public transportation, it is a long slow trip up the mountain. Uber and Lyft are available here, but the distances are such that renting a car tends to be more efficient. The park is a couple of miles down the road, and so large you will want to drive and not attempt to walk. Volcano Village is about a mile up the road. You might like to stroll up and back. If walking into the village for dinner, a flashlight for your return is an absolute must. We provide - please take it with you! If you are planning a first trip to our island, we suggest that you stay 2 or 3 nights at the treehouse. Please contact us for for discussion before you reserve if you wish. The island is truly big, and most people would rather spend the night on the west side of the island rather than return to Volcano after a day of play over there. Although we show rates for long term stays, we would like to discuss plans with you before completion of a stay of 5 days or longer. When you decide you want to stay at the treehouse, you are coming to a place unlike any other. There are other treehouses, but each is unique. This treehouse is off grid. This means it requires hands on service, every day. For most people, this is a seamless thing that happens while they are off adventuring. Every once in awhile, people come and do not want to leave, at all. We understand, but we do want to let you know that we must enter the treehouse on a daily basis to service the composting toilet. The hot tub also requires attention. The treehouse is in the forest. It is inside the trees, and this means easy critter access. To keep them outside, we carry your rubbish away and make sure your food is stored adequately. It is not a good idea to leave unwashed dishes for these same reasons. This is the tropics. There are insects. They are not as prolific here as at lower elevations, but they do exist, and will visit you especially at dusk with lights on. Spiders are residents of the forest. They are food for the birds. If you love the birds, please tolerate their food supply. We empty the house of spiders daily but we do not poison. The spiders come back at will. They are small, and stay in the corners. They leave evidence of their visit in the form of webs. We do our best to be inhospitable to them, but they persist. When there is weather, like hard rains and winds, from your perch in the trees you will experience the sound and feel in ways you may have not before. The house is tight - the weather does not enter if the doors and windows are closed. But the sounds can be formidable. You will feel close to nature.
The neighborhood is part undeveloped rainforest and part lots with houses. There are no tract homes - every house is individually designed and built. There are no street lights so at night it is very dark. The forest tends to obscure moonlight. There is a hula halau that practices nearby some afternoons, and you can hear their Hawaiian music and chants late in the day.
  • What can I say? An incredible stay!! A must visit Airbnb. I would fly to the Big Island again just to stay on this property. The communication was excellent. We had some pretty rainy weather during our stay so our check in time changed, but the hosts were quick to respond to us and adapt to our check in needs. They met us at the property and showed us around the treehouse. The Treehouse itself is AMAZING. The entrance is grand, the hot tub outside is incredible, shower outside is such a neat touch, the compostable toilet works great. Everything about the treehouse was impeccable. There is a fireplace to keep warm on cooler/rainy days/nights. There is also WIFI available, although the data in the area is pretty good so we did not utilize the WIFI. A 10/10 stay. Highly recommend. Cannot say enough good things! A dream come true for those looking for a unique stay!

  • Wow! I’ve been visiting this island for 20 years and this was such a unique experience even after I thought I had done it all! Super comfy bed, the hot tub was so fun and luxurious and the outdoor shower felt amazing in the cool air. Location is so ideal for visiting the Volcano National Park. We loved it!

  • Had a great stay here, wife loved it. Close to Volcano and the National Park. Exactly as in the pictures and a very unique place to stay. Plenty of power for everything we needed, good heater, off the grid no problem at all. Loved it and would return.

  • Such a cool experience, already planning the next stay in the treehouse.

  • A highly romantic hideaway for a couple. This is a very special place hard to find elsewhere. It is exactly as described in the add. Important is to read these instructions to understand the limitations of a tree house and the fact that local taxes are charged separately. Smooth communication, and daily service. Very close the the Volcano National Park so a great place to enjoy the park.

    Felix2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Cool space if you want to get off the map for a couple days. Highly recommend using the soaking tub and outside shower. It’s awesome!

  • Keith and Ashley were super friendly and helpful. Keith told of us of the various “hidden” beauties to be explored. Waking up with the sound of the waterfalls and surrounded by flora and fauna was awesome. Peacocks, chickens , horses, geckos, oh my

  • Ashley was an incredibly knowledgeable and welcoming host. The place is most well described as a “jungow bungalow” and is an incredible stay for true nature lovers, but it was immaculate when we got there. We cooked breakfast in the morning (groceries from the country store) and explored some of the most beautiful jungle among the fruit trees and private waterfalls on the property. Absolutely amazing. There’s feral chickens, peacocks, and three horses on the property, which we found fun but they definitely will invade your space if you let them. There are also tree frogs that sing at night and the most gorgeous stargazing you’ll ever see.

  • We had such a wonderful time here even though it was a short stay. Keith and his daughter Ashley we’re both great hosts nice to talk to and helpful with everything. The view is amazing, the sound of the waterfall was soothing and it just felt great to be surrounded by nature and the horses and peacocks. We also explored the river with all its waterfalls. It’s so beautiful and just a short walk from the tent. Everything is a bit rustic, so you need to be comfortable with the outdoors. The outdoor shower was our favorite of the 6 we experienced on this trip. Surrounded by tropical plants, hot water and a great view. We look forward to coming back and staying for longer next time.

  • This is a gorgeous location, the accommodations are simple & clean & we had everything we needed. It is the perfect place to enjoy fresh air and the countryside in HI. The horses, waterfalls, peacocks and chickens were beautiful. We loved it!

    Catherine2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • Keith and his daughter, Ashley were very kind during our stay. The tour of their grounds/property was lovely. We really enjoyed our stay here amongst the jungle, horses and waterfalls + some chickens. You definately need 4x4 to get to the property. We had a Hyundai Elantra and there was no way we could have gotten in without causing damage to the car. Thankfully, Ashley picked us up at the local restaurant due to a flash flood at the streams surrounding their property. We truely appreciated the hospitality and kindness. Ashley was calm and relaxed which put us at ease when it came to the flash flood and getting into the property.

  • Off-grid and off the beaten path. If these are things you like, you will love this place. Stars galore, frogs and the crash of a waterfall singing you to sleep every night, you really get to be a part of nature in Hawai'i . We had zero issues with bugs and the chickens were friendly neighbors!

Eco-friendly tree house in the Hawaiian rainforest on the Big Island. Only a few minutes away from a rare and spectacular glimpse of an active volcano! Enjoy an off grid adventure in the lush tropical settings of the city of Volcano. Come live in the canopy of Hawaii’s undisturbed ecosystem! This unique house is a beautiful and romantic nature getaway for couples as well as solo travelers. Come find peace and recharge your soul in paradise!
The Mokuna Treehouse is a completely off grid, eco-friendly home. The house is powered through solar energy and water comes from rain catchment. While being a one-bedroom studio, the house feels very spacious and well organized. The main living space is about fourteen feet from the ground. Covered, comfortable, wide sets of stairs with railings will lead you to your beautiful suite. The high setting gives you picturesque treetop views of the gorgeous and rare undisturbed Hawaiian rainforest, with it’s numerous Ohia trees with red flowers, Hapu’u ferns, and many more tropical plants. Sometimes you get lucky enough to see some exotic birds and small reptiles such as geckos and chameleons. At night, you can gaze at the stars and listen to the coqui frogs sing. We used a lot of natural materials throughout the house and it gives it a very warm and inviting feeling. The house has wood floors in the entire space, a modern concrete countertop, a small kitchenette area, a specious bathroom with a very large standing shower and a real toilet. The kitchen does not allow you to cook food, but there is a sink, a mini fridge, and a coffee maker. On the lanai, you will have access to a small propane grill to bbq any local delicacies. The ceilings are about 14 feet high at the peak and half of the gable roof is transparent and gives a lot of natural light. Some of the highlights of the house include the comfy king size bed and the enormous window within the shower that pans from top to bottom on one of the sides which gives you the feel that you are actually showering outdoors! There is a small lanai on the west side of the house where you can relax and enjoy great views of the rainforest and garden. Furthermore, there is a huge net that overhangs the main entrance of the home, underneath the main living space. It is such a fun lounging area where you can just relax, nap, and enjoy the surrounding forest. There are many different plant species all over the property. Enjoy a quaint stroll through the garden in the back as well as up and down the path to the main gate. So many things to see everywhere you look! We do not offer wifi and we highly encourage our guests to immerse themselves into a full nature retreat and detach themselves momentarily from technology and their portable devices while at the tree house. :)
The Mokuna Treehouse is situated on a quiet street with little traffic, only 2 minutes away from the main road that loops the island. The house is located in the town of Volcano, which is close to three thousand feet in elevation, so it does get a bit colder up in this area (temperatures sometimes dropping to the low fifties at night). The southeast part of the Big Island does tend to get a decent amount of rainfall, so it is normal that you encounter some showers at some point throughout the day. Although Volcano is a small town, you have access to everything you may need within just a few miles from the house. Volcano Village is only five to ten minutes away and has a couple of general stores, a coin laundry, a hardware store, a gas station, and several great restaurants and cafés. There are also a few art galleries and even a winery. Every Sunday there is also a farmer’s market held in Volcano Village where you can buy all sorts of local produce and much more. Volcanoes National Park is also extremely close, where you have access to a discount price gas station, a restaurant, several unique hiking trails, a view of the active volcano, and even a bowling alley! The park is open 24hrs, so you may enter at any time. The best time to see the active volcano is definitely after dark on a clear night. The closest airport near Volcano is in Hilo, which is about 40 minutes away. Kona also has an airport on the other side of the island, but it is about two hours away. The nearest beaches are about a forty minutes drive from Volcano. A favorite is the Black Sand Beach on the south portion of the island. The southeast part of the Island has so much to see. Definitely have a rental vehicle available to catch a glimpse of all the gems this side has to offer!
  • This is a fantastic place to stay if you’re looking for a one of a kind experience! The Mokuna treehouse is off-grid though it has plenty of amenities to make it super enjoyable. Katya and Justin maintain this in pristine condition and there is something restful and rejuvenating for everyone. They have created a cozy place with everything you can imagine already taken care of from snacks, teas and coffee to toiletries to games to all the utensils you need for cooking out. A super comfy bed, plush terry robes and towels will have you feeling like you’re in a spa. Cook out, spend an afternoon reading and dreaming in the massive hammock, and enjoy the floor-to-ceiling private glass shower looking out on the rainforest. There are also plenty of fliers and pamphlets on all the nearby things to go see and enjoy. Put the Mokuna Treehouse on your bucket list!

  • Ekaterina's place is exactly as advertised...an Eco-friendly tree house in the Hawaiian rainforest. It's a great way to learn about being totally off the grid and how to use resources (water, electricity etc). Our favorite part was the sounds from the rainforest! I mean, it was pure magic- hearing the sounds of birds and frogs. What a lovely place to spend a night in such a beautiful part of the Big Island!

  • Amazing! So glad we stayed here. What a unique opportunity in today’s world to get away from technology and enjoy the beautiful sights/sounds of the jungle. This was a stay we’ll never forget. The space is even better than imagined as are the hosts. Also loved the opportunity to see what it’s like to live off grid. They’ve thought of everything; you’ll love this place!

  • Really cool oasis in the rainforest near Volcanoes National Park. We only stayed for one night, but it was great. We loved being up above the tree line and looking out the giant window from bed into the forest. The shower is fantastic and the sound of the rain on the roof gave everything an extra cozy vibe. Really fun addition to our trip and all the AirBNBs that we stayed in.

  • Absolutely wonderful experience! The space is unique and the location is a great balance of secluded and near other human beings.

    Kat2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • A fun experience. Everyone should do it Atleast one time in your life! Great host!

    Crystal2020-02-25T00:00:00Z
  • We have a fantastic time staying at the Mokuea Tree House. It is definitely one of the more unique AirBnB experiences that we have had. It’s off the grid and located in a beautiful area on the Big Island. It’s really close to Volcanoes National Park so it made our visit to the park very easy. The Thai food truck down the road (Tuk Tuk) is amazing and definitely a must visit with limited food options nearby. During our stay, I unfortunately left my wedding band behind after checkout. The hosts were FANTASTIC in working with us to get me my ring back, I have nothing but good things to say about the Mokuna Tree House and cant wait to visit again sometime.

  • Excellent space, amazing architecture! Interior is huge & comfy. Loved hearing coquis in the evening (but glad earplugs were provided for the roosters). Morris is not lying when he says this home has big paradise energy.

  • The house is very spacious and comfortable. Very well equipped. The host is very gracious and extremely welcoming. We had everything we needed and more than expected.

  • A 5 star Airbnb. Location is great, close to downtown for foods and grocery, but not far from the attractions. Space: It is super clean and there are lots of thoughtful touches provided by the host. The space is huge and would be great for a big family. Communication: Morris and Yuka are very helpful, everything including local tips and supermarket coupon are provided from our communication. I’d highly recommend Morris and Yuka’s place for whoever would like to visit Hilo.

    Caroline2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • Morris is a five-star host only because they don’t make 10 stars! Morris was very attentive to our needs and showed a level of generosity that is rare in today’s world. We felt welcome and at ease with Morris immediately and it was very clear that he wanted everything to be just right for us....and it was! I recommend staying at this location without hesitation!

  • We were 6 adults and 1 kid stayed for 2 days. When we arrived in, Moris welcomed us warmly. The house was big and clean. He prepared everything such as kid toys, full kitchen, washing machine, winter cloth, welcome frute breakfast and the small gift. We also liked outdoor bbq grill. It's little difficult to find the entry od house from the highway but we didn't suffer from the road noisy. We definitely recommend this house to everyone.

  • We’ve stayed in a lot of Air B&Bs over the years but Morris was by far the most wonderful host we’ve met. Great communication, local tips, fruit and breakfast provided for the first day. The house has everything you could possibly need from beach equipment to coolers to a karaoke machine! Highly recommended.

King Bed, & 'Bali Style' outdoor shower- Apartment at street level in downtown Hilo Free parking. NOTE 14.96% TAX PAYABLE UPON ARRIVAL . CLEANING FEE OF $50 APPLIED FOR STAYS OF 7 DAYS OR MORE.
Enter from our garden courtyard, and hear the sound of running water from the stone pond beside the entryway. There is the feeling of 'sanctuary' here. This apartment is something a little exotic for your visit to Hilo. Charming architectural features include stone and teracotta tile floors, a timber wall and wooden beams. The Lo'i features King sized bed. Lo'i' is the Hawaiian name for the wetland taro that grows in clear running water. This apartment was formerly a 'Poi factory' where the staple taro vegetable was processed and was a much loved icon for Hilo locals for several generations and since the 1980's it was converted to a clothing store where two leading Hawaiian designers got their start. ..Fast forward to 'now' and you will find this is a self contained apartment with a bedroom, a sun room, private bathroom and outdoor shower area. A ceiling fan helps to cool the bedroom and due to the helpful suggestions of our guests we have added extra privacy by hanging a curtain on the rear door. There's no kitchen here but there is a mini fridge and a tea & coffee station. This may work for travelers who don't plan on spending vacation time cooking. Once you step out onto the street, there are plenty of great restaurant choices for breakfast, lunch or dinner within one or two blocks of The Lohi. This apartment is part of a complex of several old homes which have been refurbished and restored and is called 'The Lotus Garden.' On the property is a two bedroom guest cottage called 'The Sugar Shack' and a three bedroom vacation home called 'The Lotus.' Both of these homes are listed with airbnb.com. Our guests continue to let us know that our central location makes their stay with us easy and convenient. You can enjoy the convenience of being in the same block as some great budget cafes and restaurants as well as grocery stores and the Farmer's Market. Most visitors do hire a car to see the many remote spots on the island. If you are looking for an alternative to the major rental companies, just ask us for a recommendation for someone renting cars.
Hilo is a great town to walk about in and explore because of its small size. The heart of Downtown Hilo is only 3 blocks. In this area you will find wonderful restaurants and several great venues for live music. Keawe street is home to sushi and other restaurants, plus an open air bistro & bar plus several cafes, plus a Kombucha bar, a Kava bar and two great sushi restaurants. There's also a farmer's market on Bayfront and plenty of little stores to browse in. We love the slower pace of life here and the many artists, musicians and eccentrics who call this home.
  • The place is nice and clean. The environment is great for people to stay and feel comfortable. Feel very worth to choose the place! Definitely will come back again:)

  • This apartment is both adorably cute and perfectly located. The outdoor shower is a tropical dream come true.

  • A great little spot in Hilo. A nice little enclave and walking distance to many of Hilo’s attractions.

    Niall2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • This beautifully furnish space made our time spent in Hilo one to remember. The place is very easy to find and centrally located right in Hilo town. A short walk will get you to a variety of restaurants, shops, the beach and a lovely farmers market. The shower was a major highlight. Located outdoors next to a calming fountain, the sound of running water and coquí frogs made for a Spa-like experience. I would highly recommend this space to anyone looking to delight in the charming character of Big Island.

    Emily2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • Great place, super close to the heart of Hilo. Farmers market. Natural food store. Park. Yoga.

    Carolyn2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Great little spot in the heart of Hilo!

    Kelly2020-02-13T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed here on our first night in Hilo and it was a perfect homebase. Just a couple blocks from the farmer's market, and walking distance to lots of great restaurants. We didn't have any issues with heat or noise. Really comfortable bed. Would definitely stay there again!

Our Tiny Tropical Treehouse is a very special space full of creativity and beauty. Custom built by an artist, this eco-house is flooded with natural sunlight, rich with wood accents, and inextricably connected to nature. It is ideal for couples and individuals looking for a private retreat nestled away in the jungle. Adventurers, relaxers, writers, and artists will enjoy staying here, a mere 18 mi from all Volcano National Park has to offer and 20 mi from downtown Hilo.
Tiny treehouse, swinging bridge, and zooming zipline... oh my! This rental is one of a kind. The house boasts an eco-friendly footprint to travelers, budding botanical garden, unique custom interior, and a getaway retreat from busy life. In 2016 Caroline and Melissa embarked upon building this off-grid house. With some serious planning, a hint of overconfidence, and a lot of support, we hit the ground running. At Home Depot we were serendipitously roped into an interview for HGTV's show "Tiny Paradise." The film crew showed up at our door a week later! From then the project took on a whole new energy. We embarked upon new murals, art projects, and all kinds of visual eye candy to make sure every corner of the house was the highest quality we could muster. We hope you enjoy the finished product and all the love and time that went into custom making every inch of this space! If you want to check out the episode we are episode #2 "Tiny Hawaiian Hideaway" in the HGTV series "Tiny Paradise." Below is a description of what you can expect when you visit: Follow the red cinder trail through the stunning botanical array that envelops our off-grid tiny house. Ascend 8 feet up into the air for the cool breeze and a better view of the surrounding flora and fauna. You've arrived! With a total of 13 windows and glass doors, you enter into the comfort and luxury of the home but your view extend hundreds of feet into the surrounding jungle of Ohia and Hapu'u. Once inside you will see dozens of wood accents, from our high-backed log chair, to our Koa Wood Balinese style couch. The loft is held up with posts made from Ohia trees sourced from our own property. We made the loft handrail, coffee table, and hand-towel hangers from trees that had to be cleared during the construction of our house. Enjoy lounging on the expansive Balinese couch while you bird watch, or kick your feet up onto the trunk as you become immersed in a good read. On your way to the kitchen meander past the stained glass window depicting a cardinal, we coincidentally have two males and one female on the property! Also keep an ear out for baby hawk in the early spring. You enter the kitchen and will be blown away by the design of the floating dish racks. The custom Chocolate Albezia wood slab counter top shimmers, as does the glass sink basin and hand blown pendant lights hanging overhead. Relax at the kitchen bar and sip on your morning coffee as you watch the sunrise strike leaves and dew, setting them off into stunning shades of green, red, orange, and yellow. Eat your lunch while pondering the tiny mushrooms and vibrant moss growing on a nearby tree. Drink a glass of wine while you stare at the milky way and the moon. Tucked away in a dark corner of the house is the lava themed bathroom. Enter the bathroom and feel the cool natural stone underneath your feet, be reminded of that lava tube you explored yesterday or will crawl around in today. The main volcanic mural, created with naturally smoothed lava rocks, will captivate your eyes as you shower. The fiery glass sink, with a rough field of lava swirling around it, is a focal point of the lava spilling into your lavatory experience. A local female artist made the themed art piece hanging on the wall; illustrating traditional canoes, hula, Pele (the volcano goddess) and ancient rituals. The sliding barn door and tinted openable window envelop you in the private surreal feel of the space. Enjoy! It's all yours! Before you head to bed you absolutely must make your way across the swinging bridge to arguably the best part of the house. The treehouse! Supported by two rows of sister trees, the deck is a magical place to lay down and look up at the sun shining through the leaves, get close to Lehua blossoms or a herd of blooming orchids, and watch the stars glittering through the branches. We enjoy eating every meal we can out there and doing work while lounging in the reclinable chair. If you're visiting with a romantic partner (eyebrow wiggle), there was a psychology study that found people misattribute the excitement of a swinging bridge to the attraction they feel for a potential love interest. So go on, get your partner on the bridge with you and spice things up. Get your heart beating faster... is it the bridge?... is it your partner? I guess we'll never know. When all the excitement has passed and you're all tuckered out, climb the space efficient right-left ladder staircase to the loft. Wiggle into the comfort and luxury of our memory foam mattress, feel it envelop your body, and then never get up ;). The loft is cozy, but it's a room with a view. Along the headboard a 10 inch window encourages you to stargaze from the comfort of your bed, at one of the clearest skies in the world! I personally love laying on my side staring out the openable window and looking at the silhouettes of the surrounding forest contrasted against the starry night sky. Under the warmth of the comforter enjoy the cool mountain breeze (1900 feet of elevation) as you drift off to sleep. What else can we say? This place is paradise and heaven on earth and our pride and joy. We hope you will love it as much as we do! ********************************************************** The "Eco" in our house: We hope you will love the artistic luxury of the space and re-define what is possible to create with reclaimed materials and an off-grid lifestyle. We built this house ourselves and one of our main goals was for guests to enjoy being off-grid and see first hand how lovely it can be to go green. We adore nature (if you couldn't tell ;) ) and so it was very important for us to have the smallest footprint possible throughout the building process, therefore we hunted, hunted and kept hunting! All 5 of the huge 4 ft x 6 ft windows connecting the interior space to the natural beauty found outside, were reclaimed. We scored on the 2 glass doors because Ace Hardware in Kea'au was de-installing them from their store front. We managed to give dying surfboards new life in our functional art piece on the treehouse deck. We collected lava rocks from local beaches to create the volcano mural that defines the bathroom and the red cinder trail was locally sourced from a volcanic red cinder cone. The entryway mosaic was made possible by broken tiles that were going to be thrown away at Floor Decor in Hilo. The hardwood floors came from my uncle's hardwood floor business after a sample batch for a hotel wasn't the exact color that the interior designers were going for (lucky us). Our water catchment tank and stove top are second-hand and we are utterly proud of it all! We hope you remember the beauty of this place & bit of land long after you are gone, to us, "eco" can also mean comfy!
We are situated in the Ohia jungle. Throughout a day only a handful of cars will drive by. (Once, we had lumber delivered in the middle of the road because we didn't have a driveway yet.) From the house only one house is visible in the back distance but you can occasionally hear our front neighbors. There are abandoned vehicles down the road but that's not uncommon in rural neighborhoods on the Big Island.
  • This place rocks! The pictures don't do it justice. Wait until you get there and settle in. I lost my GPS signal but once Melissa received my text, she called me and sent me everything I needed to guide me to where I needed to go. The way she has everything set up, plus the sounds of the jungle, just make the entire experience so calm and serene. I had a wonderful stay.

  • My boyfriend and I were blessed to find Melissa and Catherine’s amazing treehouse on Airbnb for our two week quarantine and we loved every minute of our full forest immersion. At sunset we would sit on the deck and slide down the zip line, the kitchen was fully equipped to create any meal you can think of and the outdoor shower was surrounded by beautiful orchids and lush greenery, we would definitely recommend this spot for a few days to feel the real Hawaii vibes.

    Alicia2020-04-18T00:00:00Z
  • This is a gorgeous home! Every little corner has a unique artistic touch that makes the whole experience enjoyable. The platform is great for stargazing and the zipline was the icing on the cake!

  • Amazing secluded cabin tucked away in a beautiful rain forest. Perfect place for a romantic get away. We loved the zip-line! So much fun. While probably not absolutely necessary, having a 4WD helped getting there, as some of the puddles from all the recent rain could have given smaller cars trouble.

    Patrick2020-03-20T00:00:00Z
  • This is an absolute MUST STAY!!!! It is off the beaten path and secluded in the best way. You are in the middle of the forest with incredible 360 views. We went to sleep with the sounds of nature. If we come back to the big island we will absolutely stay longer.

    Landry2020-03-18T00:00:00Z
  • This place is quite the experience! You feel very isolated and organic in this charming, jungle-like setting. The bed is very comfortable, kitchen handy for a small stovetop meal, and the couch is a perfect place to curl up with a book. I was even able to flow through some yoga on the deck! Occasional noice from the neighbors may drift through the window, but it was not an issue for our stay. Would recommend!

This is a great space for budget minded travelers and who are looking for a safe, comfy and affordable accommodation. The room is in a very humble finished basement suite that my husband and I call home when we are in Hilo. The upstairs and downstairs units have separate entrances. If you appreciate the simple things in life, this space is the place for you. It has privacy, queen bed, wifi, Roku TV, a desk, eating space, kitchenette and a full bath. For $30-45 a night who could ask for more.
It's a large room with separate areas for entertaining and sleeping. It accommodates 2 people very comfortably on a queen bed and futon sofa. The upstairs is a 3 bedroom home unit that we also Airbnb so it can get a bit noisy when guest have kids or heavy feet. There are a pair of bluetooth noise canceling earphones that connect to the TV which has Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Pandora and more so you can zone out to your show of choice.
The house is in an old plantation village toward the end of a cul de sac. There is a big park steps from the house that is perfect for a stroll or stargazing. It's very quiet at night except for a few coqui frogs. However the roosters sound off in the neighborhood at dawn and feeding time.
  • Great experience! 12/10

  • Val’s Airbnb is a secret gem and def will be staying there again.

  • A great budget friendly private room. Would recommend. Everything a private room needs; Clean, Hot water, wifi, parking, and basic cookware. Would definitely stay again if in the area.

  • Nice place surrounded by nature. Kind host, very helpful - just ask.

    Veit2020-02-21T00:00:00Z
  • Most likely the best value for money you can get in Hilo. Amazing place to discover the east side of the island from!

    Ricardo2020-02-12T00:00:00Z
  • Great stay! If you’re a light sleeper, definitely bring earplugs, as there can be rooster and baby sounds. It had everything we needed, I’d stay again.

    Sean2020-02-05T00:00:00Z
  • We can spend relaxedly in large room. The kitchen and shower room are almost reserved, The host, Val, is very friendly but gives me a reasonable sense of distance so I can relax. I can lend a washing machine and a dryer for free, so I think that long trips will be saved. I couldn't hear any chickens except in the kitchen, and I didn't mind the frog chorus personally. I was happy to see Amazon Prime!

Being 15 minutes up mountain from Hilo means that its a pleasant few degrees cooler up here. Also, we are close enough to downtown for food, parks, shops, and nightlife to be a short drive away and far enough outside of it to be quiet and separate from the hum and buzz.
  • Had such an awesome experience staying with Cory and Emily! They were insanely kind, intelligent, and full of knowledge about places to go on the island and how to live a natural, self sustainable lifestyle. Their property was beautiful, sooo nicely decorated and just great vibes. Perfect place to connect with nature and really loved getting to interact with the other traveler staying there. Also, the free vegan breakfast was such a nice touch to an overall perfect experience. Would love to come back someday!💜

  • Loved this gorgeous spacious home and will definitely be back. Just the right distance away from Hilo to feel tranquil and had the most peaceful sleep. Emily and Corey are very experienced at making guests feel right at home.

  • A great place to stay with warm hosts and an awesome lanai!

    Leslie2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • Emily and Corey’s home is so beautiful and tucked up on a hill not too hard outside of Hilo Town. I did not have a car so I used Uber or walked around and felt their place was good proximity to do so. I arrived at night and was greeted by beautiful lights and overall ambience. During the daytime you can see the ocean on one side and Mauna Kea on the other. I took some great photos and a time lapse of sunrise on their back porch. The photos really don’t do it justice. Emily and Corey were extremely hospitable and gave amazing local tips on hikes and must-see/eats. I felt like I knew them like friends because of how warm and inviting they were. Would definitely recommend and will be staying again if I find myself on the big island. Mahalo 🌺

    Melissa2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • We had an amazing time here. We arrived late in Hilo and found our way to Emily's with ease. A wrap-around porch with string lights served as the perfect spot coffee in the morning or beers in the evening. Its really close to town, but far enough away to listen to the coqui frogs and stargaze. Fresh papaya, pancakes and coffee on the lanai fueled all our adventures from this great home-base. Emily and Cory were super helpful and offered us some great tips for the big island. It felt like staying with friends. We stayed here for 2 nights and did not want to leave.

    Chase2020-01-27T00:00:00Z
  • A secluded private home away from the hustle and bustle of Hilo. Spectacular views of Mauna Kea and the Pacific Ocean. The hosts do a wonderful job of making their guests feel welcome.

    Linda2020-01-23T00:00:00Z
  • The house itself is beautiful and situated on a property with a gorgeous view. It's conveniently located to lots of stores/restaurants, and the host is friendly, quick to respond and eager to help. We had a great time, and would recommend staying here!

ALOHA! My property is steps away from Carlsmith Beach Park also known as Turtle Beach where you can snorkel with Pacific turtles. It is also 5 mins away from Richardson beach park a prime spot for snorkeling. My lanai overlooks a rainforest. 10 mins to downtown Hilo, and 5 mins to the Airport. Recently the glow of Kilauea lava can be seen from my property.
Hilo has Imiloa Astronomy Center, two art gallerys in town and one in Volcano Park and two museums. There is a black sand beach one mile away. The beach where I live is great for snorkeling and title watching. There is a black sand beach in Pahoa and a green sand bears it South point, There is a new back sand beach in Pahoa and a green sand beach at South point
  • Margaret was so sweet and accommodating to my late arrival time. She offered me breakfast, tea, and coffee too. This is definitely a shared space so just be aware of that. The ocean is right outside the door with many paths to explore. Downtown is a quick drive away too. A great experience and a great location :)

  • What an amazing location!

    Craig2020-03-18T00:00:00Z
  • Margaret is a very nice and warming person. The place has a nice location, near the black sand beach and a perfect snorkel place. The Hele-on bus goes in front of the condo.

    Constanza2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • Margaret is super friendly and easy. The room and the apartment are nicely located next to a beautiful bay with many huge sea turtles. I love turtles so for me the location was perfect. At night you hear nice nature sounds, and sometimes an airplane but not much and that didn’t bother me. As a solo traveler I really liked staying with Margaret, to have nice contact.

    Hester2020-03-11T00:00:00Z
  • Margaret did a great job welcoming me and making my stay comfortable. Having the beautiful beach nearby was an added bonus!!

  • Just FYI- I didn’t realize this wasn’t a Private Condo to ourselves, so I was surprised at my mistake. When we met Margaret though, I knew we would get along splendidly. She’s a wonderful hostess and thoughtful roommate. Thank you for making us coffee each morning and telling us exactly where to go to swim with the Biggest turtles. Best Hostess ❤️

    Jimi2020-03-04T00:00:00Z
  • Margaret was a lovely host and her home was quiet and comfortable. The location can’t be beat - we went snorkeling at the Carlsmith beach park and saw beautiful fish and tons of turtles! Her place is about 45 mins from volcanoes national park and easy to find, with great parking. We can’t thank her enough for inviting us to her home!

    Hilo, Hi, United States

Convenient and comfortable place in downtown HILO for the SINGLE traveler. No cleaning or cancellation fees. I'm located 4 miles from Hilo Airport Everything is walking/biking distance: Hilo Bay, parks, cafes, live music. This old neighborhood (1930s) can be noisy with night frogs, neighbor's dogs, wild roosters. So this may not be a good place for those needing peace and quiet. Earplugs are provided If you don't have a car, all guests are welcome to borrow bicycles
Guest stays upstairs in private apartment, and host lives in a separated part in the basement.
Guest stays in the private upstairs quarters of a small house. Our neighborhood is from the 1930s in downtown Hilo. But still has the country-feeling with birds and wild chickens.
  • Great place to stay. Host has lots of local tips for activities and is very helpful.

    Wei-Lin2020-02-19T00:00:00Z
  • Donna was a gracious host. I enjoyed riding bikes with her and having the bike available to use. Her coffee and breakfast was nice. I enjoyed the massage chair and conversation with Donna. She also provided great tips on local attractions. I slept great!

    Carla2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • Donna is a great host. From the moment I steeped stepped through those doors at her house. I was treated with such kindness. You have the floor to yourself. Including Bathroom and Bedroom. I highly recommend this place

  • First of all, this time I changed my return date for one day and there was no accommodation on the last day. I was in a hurry to find a place to stay the next day, but I found Donna's house on Airbnb. It was already in the evening, but as soon as I sent a message telling me that I couldn't explain my situation and stay overnight, I was immediately relieved to answer and I was really relieved. In addition, I was allowed to check in early and listened to the various difficulties. He came to chat in the evening, and on the next day I was grateful to go on a bike tour of Hilo town! A great host with great hospitality. I definitely want to stay at Donna's house again! Thanks Donna

  • Donna is a very welcoming host. Her guidance was really appreciated., helping me find the bike share kiosk nearby for example. I enjoyed lovely breakfasts and delicious coffee. The bed woke me up a bit in the night as it is really creaky, but this did not overshadow my stay.

This jewel is on the fifth floor and just a few feet from the ocean with an amazing view of Hilo Bay. Sip a tropical drink while listening to the lull of breaking waves from the lanai. You can watch humpback whales breaching in winter. Enjoy Hawaiian sunrises and sunsets with rainbows most days. Easy walking distance to Hawaii's beautiful Liliuokalani Park, Reed's Bay & Coconut Island. As well as many restaurants. Price includes TAT & GET.
Off street parking. (Unassigned) Security cameras and patrolling guard. A memory foam bed for cloud like sleep. Smart tv connected to the Wi-Fi for your entertainment. The condo is fully equipped with a full size refrigerator as well as complete cooking items including: microwave, blender, rice cooker, steamer, juicer, two burner hot plate, convection/toaster oven, dishes, plates, silverware, glasses (including champagne glasses), etc. Hilo generally is temperate, (between 67-83 degrees), so the unit stays very comfortable with the help of the ocean breezes, overhead and free standing fans.
This area is nestled around beautifully landscaped parks and boasts beautiful Banyan trees that each have a plaque showing who planted it and when. From Babe Ruth to Amelia Earhart you will be amazed at the majestic beauty that surrounds this area. The oceanfront parks street lights are low wattage, which is required by the world class observatories on top of Mauna Kea.
  • We had a less than great experience with another stay on a different island and were a bit weary. It is an old building and the walk up is not promising. As soon as we opened the door we were relieved. It was beautiful. Clean. Nice temperpedic style bed. Fridge was clean. Dishes and such to use. The best part, there was a coffee maker. It was a great place and would definitely come back.

    Jordan2020-01-04T00:00:00Z
  • Paul’s condo is awesome. It has a wonderful view and you can fall asleep to the sound of the ocean. Even if it’s raining you’re fine because you have Netflix and Amazon Prime on the large flatscreen tv provided!

    Shane2019-12-24T00:00:00Z
  • We booked this very last minute and I am so glad they accepted. It's a very quiet and cozy one bedroom with everything we needed. Close location to food, things to do, and shopping. They have great recommendations upon check in and give great details. If you're looking for a small and quiet space with an ocean view in Hilo, book this one!

    Anna2019-12-22T00:00:00Z
  • I had a great stay at Paul and Andreas place. The building is older and is a little worn down as previous reviews describe and there is no air conditioning which can make the air a little stagnant at times when the humidity is higher. But the use of the fans provided was perfect for me. The view is fantastic and you often wake up to cruise ships coming into the port. The building was very quiet at night, no problems with noise at all during my 3 week stay. Paul and Andrea answered all of my questions immediately and were GREAT hosts. I would stay again!

    Tom2019-11-16T00:00:00Z
  • Very nice and comfortable

    Graciela2019-09-21T00:00:00Z
  • The space is small but functional. The interior is nicely renovated and comfortable enough. My only two complaints were the following: - Air conditioner vents into the ceiling. In other words the heat taken out of the room is put back into it on the other side and the room temperature does not change much overall. The owner recommended opening a window but there was no bug screen. - The building itself is in need of some serious TLC. It is off putting when first driving up. It is central to all of Hilo and overall a good value for the price anytime of year that the trade winds are blowing. Loved using the guest Netflix account on a rainy afternoon!

    Caribbean2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • Paul's space is as it is described, the building is very old and run down however the small apartment was great for our 2 night stay and close to Volcano's national park which is what we wanted. if you are after a flash place to stay, I would recommend staying on the Kona side of the island.

    Ren2019-08-26T00:00:00Z

Great spot for star-gazing, as there is no light pollution from town and there are no street lights. ✿ PRIVATE GUEST BACK YARD/GARDENS ✿ The bungalow has a very large private back yard that includes a privacy fence, picnic table, umbrella, and 2 lawn chairs. Large grassy area for kids to hunt for Coqui frogs at night. Enjoy your breakfast/coffee out in the back yard and relax! Bungalow private yard and garden area is about 1/4 of an acre, with no neighbors in sight. ✿ ECO-FRIENDLY ✿ A solar water heater provides on-demand hot water, but please note, this is a 1/2 sized water heater. We encourage guests to conserve island resources and take short showers. We ask guests to use the drying rack and reuse towels when possible. Electricity is 6X higher here than on the mainland, so please do not use extra beds in the back (beyond what you booked for) as this causes extra un-necessary washing/drying of all the bedding. ✿ JUST ISLAND BREEZES ✿ There is no air conditioner in the bungalow, but open screened areas, new ceiling fans provide ample airflow all year round. The bungalow has three ceiling fans, although the unit gets great airflow and breezes through the large open screened areas. There is a box fan in the back closet as well, as some people are not fond of humid climates. Year-round day temperatures are 68 - 93F, nighttime ranges 58 - 78F. In Hilo, air conditioning is not usually needed! ✿ WHEELCHAIRS ✿ Doorways are 30" so may or may not be wheelchair accessible (depending on the width of your wheelchair). There are no stairs, so bungalow has easy access for handicap, physically challenged, or elderly/kapuna. We are here to assist our handicap visitors - so let us know what you need. ✿ SMOKING/PETS ✿ We have a STRICT NO SMOKING/NO PETS policy to ensure the comfort and health of all future guests. You can smoke outside in designated bungalow gardens or guest back yard, just please dispose of any butts. This policy includes ESA pets. ✿ WiFi ✿ YES - Island wide it can be VERY slow....we pay for the highest speed with the best provider, it's still slow. The weather condition that has the greatest effect on a Wi-Fi signal is rainfall, keep in mind Hilo is the rainiest city in the USA. If you need AMAZING WiFi, please don't book the bungalow. ✿ TV/Cable ✿ Bungalow is a TV-Free Zone, hey you're on vacation, relax, or read a good book, spend quality time with each other and detox from electronics. ✿ LAUNDRY ✿ Guest laundry is NOT available on site it's but only 5 mins. to laundromat ✿ AIR CONDITIONING ✿ Not needed - island breezes will keep you cool. ✿ OVEN/STOVE ✿ No standard stove/oven, 2 burner induction cooktop is available or use the large electric skillet. There is a standard-sized microwave and rice cooker. ✿ DISHWASHER ✿ No, my solution is 'eat out' or pick up some inexpensive local food! ✿ HEATING ✿ Not needed, but there are plenty of cozy blankets and it rarely gets chilly in Hilo. If the weather is going to be a little chilly, I'll leave extra blankets for you. Not sure what to do in and around Hilo? Read our personal guidebook to all the hidden places and best places to visit. Find the guidebook at: https://www.airbnb.com/things-to-do/rooms/21186650 Information binders are also available in the bungalow and include local activities, maps, menu’s, lava information. ✿ ABOUT YOUR HOSTS ✿ We're transplants from Northern California. We decided to get out of the rat race/corporate world and enjoy quiet island life. Mike makes custom stone and seashell cabinet knobs for his Etsy shop. I'm a Vegan, Certified Master Herbalist, artist and entrepreneur with 5 Etsy shops. We enjoy traveling and meeting people and have traveled to 32 countries and lived in South Africa, Australia, Germany, United Arab Emirates, and now it's our turn to host the world and let them experience our rainforest and the beautiful Big Island! We look forward to having and opportunity to host you and your family and share our rainforest and beautiful island. We invite you to Komo mai e noho (come in, sit, rest!) and enjoy an amazing rainforest experience!
✿ NEIGHBORHOOD: Our bungalow is located in a hidden and secluded, residential area with only 10 lovely homes, so it is generally quiet and peaceful. The neighbors all have dogs, so occasional dog barking during the daytime hours, as well as neighborhood lawnmowers/blowers may affect daytime tranquility at the bungalow. Once in a while, one of our neighbors may have evening guests over for parties or BBQ's and the sound can carry through the open screens. ✿ FROGS: Coqui frogs invaded the Big Island sometime in the 1970's, thought to have hitchhiked on poinsettia plants from Puerto Rico. They are an invasive species with a very LOUD nightly call. Some find them soothing, some find them annoying. In either case, Coqui Blockers (aka earplugs) are provided for adult guests. Our property is a Coqui sanctuary and we do not poison or harm them (hey, they eat lots of bugs!). ✿ EVENINGS: Generally after dinner, the neighborhood it is very quiet and peaceful (except for the Coqui frogs). You can catch up on reading, plan out your next day, take a long bath, sit in the private backyard, enjoy a BBQ, and stargaze, or get some much needed shut-eye. ✿ Neighborhood road is single lane, 5 mph, so please practice Aloha, drive careful and share the road with the neighbors. General 'aloha rule' is right of way is given to the driver going out.
  • Staying in the bungalow in a rainforest was a great trip and experience. The few geckos that we saw inside were very cool, curious, and almost friendly. The lush rain forest was unique and it took a night to get used to the sound of nature. You really felt like you were sleeping outside but still protected by the elements. The location was very close to the zoo which is great for kids. Laura and Mike were very easy to communicate with and they looked out for us during our stay. The internet was a little slow and little cell phone service inside but was a good change of pace from the city life. There were many things to do for the kids provided by the hosts. And there was plenty of space for our family of 6. I recommend this place to other guests looking for a good value and unique experience staying in the rainforest.

  • Rainforest bungalow is one of my favorite places we have ever stayed at! Very unique experience as you feel you are out in the rainforest and hear every sound. My kids loved it, and we did too! Laura was super responsive and provided different ideas on activities.

    Andrea2020-03-24T00:00:00Z
  • We loved this place! The frogs are loud at night but by the time you go to sleep you are used to them and they didn't bother us in the least! The extra touches make it seem like a luxury hotel!

    Alan2020-03-21T00:00:00Z
  • Great stay! The cottage is even better than it looks on the web site.it is Martha Stewart in a forest setting. Open air in comfort, amazing sounds to accompany your evening and sleep (frogs, birds, etc). It is a tropical experience with the frills. Loved it!

    Sharon2020-03-12T00:00:00Z
  • Our time in the Rainforest Bungalow was above and beyond! The bungalow itself is amazing and Mike and Laura were absolutely the best hosts we’ve encountered. We were provided with full day trip itineraries, local tips for beaches, restaurants and events, and extra supplies like beach gear and activities for the kids. If we ever find ourselves in Hilo again, we would stay here again without hesitation!!

Aloha and welcome to Hilo. This studio is conveniently located 2 blocks away from the airport, on a very nice and quiet neighborhood. It features one queen size bed, 2 full size memory foam mattress and a big pull out sofa which can be used as a bed as well. There is a big walk in shower, and toilet divided with a Japanese style divider as you may see on the photos. AC and Kitchen appliances available as well as cooking ware.
Cozy and spacious Studio, perfect for single or couple traveling. This was originally designed for someone on a wheel chair so the toilet area is divided by a divider so there is no door at the moment. Shower area is big enough to shower and change inside the shower but there is no door to it as well, just a shower curtain. Please keep in mind. If traveling alone this is not an issue but if more than one person then it could be.
Very convenient location on a quiet neighborhood. very close to downtown, hilo bay, rainbow falls, tropical botanical gardens and many more. please feel free to visit this compete guide for more information and all the activities you can do while your stay on big island! https://www.lovebigisland.com/hilo/activities/

  • Great place for any type Trip to Hilo

    Alfred2020-03-21T00:00:00Z
  • The studio had pretty much eveything I could need, and I had a great time staying at Gustavo's place. The best thing about the studio is the convenience. It is close to the Hilo Airport as well as some nice places to go snorkelling. Although I wouldn't consider Gustavo's place as super luxurious, it had the necessities, and as well as enough space to sleep about 3-4 people with ease. Gustavo was also an easy host to work with, and he made sure I got in OK.

    Joseph2020-03-17T00:00:00Z
  • Everything was perfect. When traveling alone the subject of the bathroom and the shower is not a problem. The bed is comfortable and the air conditioning works well

    Gustavo2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • We had a very nice stay in Gustavo's place. It turned out to be a very convenient location and easy to find. The studio is very spacious, clean and comfortable with an amazingly huge walk-in shower. An easy recommendation for future travelers and we look forward to a return visit sometime in the future.

    Philip2020-03-06T00:00:00Z
  • Gustavo was extremely speedy in his response and so very accommodating last minute and I mean within minutes. The property is in a good location. Great place for the price. This little bungalow has a lot of potential and could be updated a bit but you can’t beat the rate. It’s clean and comfy.

Welcome to the beautiful Big Island of Hawai'i! Our cozy studio, Pacific Hideaway, is centrally located within the heart of Hilo Town and we are only one mile from Hilo Bay. Our private studio offers a full kitchen and bath, a queen size bed, and a twin pull out sofa bed. Relax, rest, and revive your soul.
You will have access to the entire condo located on the second floor, where you can spend time on the lanai that overlooks the pool. Watch the sunsets and enjoy the sounds of the jungle and coqui frogs at night. We offer Wifi and a Roku Box so you can easily watch movies or YouTube videos. We also provide all linens, including beach towels, boogie boards, beach chairs, and a cooler for your island excursions. There are laundry facilities just down the hall, and the pool just steps away.
Pacific Hideaway is close to the Hilo farmers market. It is open 7 days a week, with Wednesday and Saturday being the BIG MARKET DAY where you can get exotic fruits and fresh homegrown veggies. If you are looking to see some beautiful waterfalls here on the island, Rainbow Falls and Boiling Pots are only a short 5 miles away. 'Akaka Falls, which is famous for its 400-foot cascade is a simple family-friendly hike that is surrounded by bamboo, ferns, and wild orchids. Enjoy the wonderful beach parks like Carlsmith and Richardsons where you can safely snorkel with the Honu, aka sea turtles, and colorful reef fish. If outdoor adventures are what you are seeking, descend into a lava tube at Kaumana Caves which are 7 minutes from the condo. Or, venture up the hill to Volcanoes National Park and hike the many trails that are carved into the lava fields. In May of 2018, Pele the goddess of fire and volcanoes created a brand new black sand beach here on the island. Reaching the beach takes you on a beautiful drive down "Red Road" and across the newly erupted lava.
  • Tara was the perfect host. The check in was easy, the communication quick and friendly. As we arrived at the condo, the AC was on and the cozy apartment was perfect. The kitchen was full equipped. In the bathroom there were shampoos, hair conditioner, drier. Tara provided also toothbrush and sunscreen. The condo is very close to Hilo center: it takes 30-40 min by foot (FYI we went there with our 4-months old baby). The only thing we want to mention were the neighbor's noises from upstairs. We communicated this issue with Tara and she supported us during our stay.

    Francesca2020-03-20T00:00:00Z
  • Tara's place is conveniently located and very clean and comfortable. I stayed here to run the Big Island International Marathon, and it was an easy walk not only to the start/finish line, but to Kamehameha street and the shops there. Tara was a responsive host, and the kitchen had everything I needed.

  • A lovely modern, clean and stylish apartment with everything you could need for your stay. Lots of lovely touches around the place with a beautiful balcony for morning coffees. Would certainly stay here again, very central location.

  • This place was absolutely amazing and clean! We loved how thoughtful the interior design was with the sliding balcony doors and compactable furniture! My girlfriend and I loved staying here, and were able to cook meals easily due to the plethora of silverware and cookware choices!

    Jeffrey2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • Tara’s place is clean and very close to the heart of Hilo. Parking is easy, as was check in process. Kitchen has everything one would need, and there’s even laundry detergent available. We would definitely stay here again.

    Rina2020-03-04T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed in Tara's apartment for 5 nights. It is located directly in Hilo and is therefore a great starting point to explore the island. The apartment is really very cozy, clean and equipped with everything you could need, even beach boards and a cool box with batteries for cool drinks on the beach. Everything went smoothly. We can highly recommend it.

    Christian2020-02-23T00:00:00Z

Travel across the wooden bridge to my lovely plantation home. My home has classic character with high ceilings and lots of light. It is on Reeds Island, a historic and beautiful neighborhood surrounded by a river on one side and stream on the other. Walking distance to downtown Hilo. Restaurants, Galleries, Farmers market and more. Very close to Rainbow Falls and Boiling Pots. A very special area to enjoy..
The room comes with towels, closet room and extra pillows for the full size bed. It has black out window shades for those bright mornings, and a ceiling fan for those warm nights, shared bath with owner
Reeds Island is one of two premier neighborhoods, with beautiful palms and stately homes. My home sits next to a home that was built for Princess Kaiulani"s aunt and she visited there often. The classic Shipman House is here as well.
  • We really enjoyed our stay with Marlene shes accommodating and very nice. I enjoyed our time at Marlene's and the breakfast is included

    Robert2020-03-18T00:00:00Z
  • Staying with Marlene was amazing. Her house is beautiful and the location on Reed Island is very unique and convenient. It’s only a few minutes to old town Hilo and Rainbow falls are around the corner as well. I’d definitely stay with her again.

    Sandra2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • Marlene is one of the nicest people I have met! She is a great hostess and her place was comfortable and conveniently located. I would stay here again anytime - and hope I will get that opportunity!

    Renae2020-03-11T00:00:00Z
  • Marlene’s a really cool woman. If you have the chance to be her guest, chat her up and you’ll surely have a few laughs. Not a lot of guests cook, but she was supportive of us cooking dinner. The pictures don’t express the beautiful sounds and smells you’ll experience, not to mention it’s tucked back with a perfect back patio (screened off so no bugs). Great value too.

    Brian2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • If you are looking for an oasis of peace and calm in a gorgeous historic setting...look no further! Marlene is a wonderful person and a superb host too. She makes her house feels like home for her guests, and we were very sad to leave. The property is only a short walk to the shops and restaurants of downtown Hilo, but seems to be tucked away in the tropical forest. Breakfasts on the back porch overlooking the creek were a definite highlight and we had no trouble falling right to sleep on the comfy bed. I cannot recommend this place enough! Thank you, Marlene!! -Steve (and Corey)

  • We had a fantastic stay here! We were treated to a lovely warm welcome, gorgeous breakfast, terrific local touring tips and a friendly and lively chat in the evenings. The house is in a great location with Hilo's highlights easily accessible. This truly is a home away from home.

5 Reasons Why people choose our B&B: 1 ’Cleanness’, is the most of our guests leave as their reviews besides the good location. Our diligent staff clean our property every day to maintain the quality in our B&B. We care cleanliness as our priority because this is a shared B&B with 5 guest rooms. 2 ‘Safety’ is very important factor on your travel. Guest have their own room keys to lock their room for safety. Also, 2 of our staffs are always on site downstairs, and quick to response to anything you notice during your stay. 3 Quietness’ is another factor we cherish. Good night sleep is precious especially after you arrived late flight from Airport or come back from adventures all around the island. We set our ‘Quiet time’ at 10:30pm. This means staff will turn off the light at common area at 10:30pm and guests can relax in their own rooms. 4 ’Breakfast’ We serve fresh fruits and small bread every morning. Our free breakfast is a light touch, so please supplement by yourself if needed. Help yourself some coffee and tea. There is coffee maker and filter to make coffee, a kettle to warm water. Guests are more than welcome to come down to our yard and have breakfast at the outside table downstairs. 5 ’Beautiful Tropic Yard’ We have a yard that is almost hundred years old, which is like a oasis in the area. We open classes every day that guests can enjoy Hawaiian culture, which are hula class, lei making, ukulele lesson, sunrise shell necklace making, and so on. There was plenty of parking, the place was very clean, easy self-check-in and the breakfast waiting for you in the fridge every morning was a nice touch. The room was just the right size and had everything I needed. Great place and would definitely stay again!

  • The plantation house exceeded my expectations. My room was small, as expected. It was immaculate! The shared spaces were also immaculate. The living room is a comfortable and pleasant space to read or just relax and plan the next day’s activities. The kitchen is very functional for a traveler who needs access to microwave, coffee maker, refrigerator and hot water electric kettle. I enjoyed having the light breakfast which was plenty for me. I highly recommend this property!

  • Super clean and good location.Staffs were very nice and kind.I had very good time to stay.I enjoyed Hula lesson too.I definitely will stay there again! It was a very clean inn and a convenient place to go anywhere. As the name of the guest house was, I was staying at a Japanese inn and was very comfortable. The hula lesson was also fun. I want to go to stay again.

Fruit, coffee, and tea will be in the room for guest breakfast. The bathroom is supplied with shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and towels. • Only stayed here one night but the place was perfect and Ron made it very simple. Clean, easy in and out spot for a couple people looking for a day or two trip to big island.

    Scott2020-02-27T00:00:00Z
  • The place was great, had a very simple check in, and good amenities! Would highly recommend to anyone spending time in Hilo.

COVID-19 UPDATE: Cancellation Policy: includes 2 options, ‘flexible’ (full refund), and ‘non-refundable’ (10% off but no refund if cancelled). Cleaning: All surfaces disinfected w. 75% ethanol, all fabric HOT washed w/detergent & mild bleach. Disposable dishes & utensils. This is a 1-room building with AC, separate but adjacent to main house. Includes private outdoor bathroom, jetbath, & shower (short walk outside room, very clean). Wifi, fridge, microwave, coffee, TV/roku, Washer/Dryer .
A fun & unique space that is fully self-sufficient. The bedroom is a stand alone building that does not have an attached bathroom but instead connects via an outdoor concrete walkway. The rustic style bathroom is partially enclosed (but absolutely private) and is adjacent to a beautiful and fully enclosed tiled bathhouse with jet bath and shower. The property itself is home to many fruit trees and flowering plants, you're guaranteed to see lovely colors all times of the year! We do have the Puerto Rican Coqui frogs all over Hilo. These are a small noisy frogs that sing throughout the night. Some find the sounds to be charming (they certainly provide an authentic rainforest vibe!), though others find it bothersome. If noise bothers you, we recommend using earplugs or turning on the AC with closed windows over night to muffle the songs. The house is a short drive or 20 min walk to downtown/bayfront, a 15 min walk to Rainbow Falls, and a 15 min drive to local beaches.
The property is about a mile uphill from downtown Hilo. It is in close proximity to beautiful natural attractions including Rainbow Falls, Kaumana Caves, and Boiling Pots.
  • Great economic overnight stay. Frogs are loud and continuous just as expected.

    Arthur2020-03-06T00:00:00Z
  • We are grateful to have spent a couple of nights in Kelly’s guest house while visiting the Hilo area. The location is perfect for discovering all that Hilo has to offer, without having to drive very far at all. We were greeted by a friendly gecko upon arrival, but very much enjoyed the cute room and amenities. We were able to use her washer and dryer, make our morning coffee, as well as borrow snorkel gear. The bathroom and shower is completely private and clean, and if you’re on the fence about the “outdoor” experience, it’s well worth it. Even in the rain, we found that the path to the bathhouse was almost completely covered and it was easy to stay dry. Her space was safe, very useful, and can feel like a glamping experience at times. We did not experience bugs, only geckos!

    Jennifer2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great location! Minutes away from rainbow falls and downtown. Just keep in mind (like the description says) the bathroom is unattached and there is a toilet stall within a larger bathhouse so if you like a bathroom super close to use at night it’s not the easiest to use. But if you don’t mind walking a few extra steps outside and down a path it’s not too difficult. Also frogs can be noisy (also described in the listing). Our second night they were much quieter so it just depends.

    Tessa2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • Walking distance to Rainbow Falls, extremely easy check in and check out, and lovely hosts! Will definitely stay here again when I find myself in Hilo

    Sam2020-01-11T00:00:00Z
  • Kelly was a wonderful host who made the whole process a breeze. If your exploring Hilo, this is a great place to stay.

    Ben2019-12-30T00:00:00Z
  • A perfect little Ohana super close to the Rainbow Falls and downtown Hilo restaurants and shops. I only stayed one night before I flew out of Hilo but it would be a great space to check out all that this side of the island has to offer. The AC was a bonus. It wasn't a hot stay but it was really nice to be dry will packing up all my gear.

    Beth2019-12-22T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed our stay at Kelly's. The room is comfortable and simple, with lots of little amenities that are great touches (such as a coffeemaker and fridge, and iron/ironing board). There’s also an AC that worked well, even though we barely needed it. As others have mentioned, there are wonderful nature sounds at night. This didn’t bother me at all even though I’m a sensitive sleeper (the earplugs blocked all the noise) and my partner liked hearing the sounds. Parking was easy and downtown Hilo is a short (less than 10 minutes) drive away.

The entrance is only accessible by key, and the gate is kept closed at all times. Security cameras are at the main entrance and in common walkways. Besides a few local businesses , the apartment complex is home to a variety of tenants, from singles to small families. We are definitely a melting pot! The Cute and Cozy unit is located in the far corner of the building, with one of it's windows facing an adjoining gravel parking lot. Though convenient for parking, the sound of incoming and outgoing cars is unavoidable. Our unit has a simple counter top equipped with a microwave, coffee maker and beneath a mini fridge. Shelves above house dishware and silverware for two along with a toaster and electric skillet should you need to whip up something. We are happy to note that the room is exactly as pictured. And for your viewing pleasure we have provided you with NETFLIX, using profile "Airbnb".....enjoy!

  • I had an absolutely lovey stay at the Bungalow and I would highly recommend it to any couples or solo travelers visiting the Big Island. There is plenty of room for luggage, a chair right by the front door to sit on to remove soiled shoes, a fabulously comfy bed, spacious kitchenette and charming little bathroom. There are windows on all 4 walls for a cross-breeze but still enough privacy to feel comfortable walking around in the space. Outside, there is a wild avocado trees and plenty of parking. Downtown Hilo is just a short 4 block walkaway with restaurants and shopping. I am so thankful that I found this little spot to call home on my travels!

  • The Garden Apartment was a great spot to stay while checking out Hilo and surrounding areas. The location in town is perfect, walkable to several restaurants and parks. Brittany and Bodhi do a good job making sure that everything is clean and well furnished. We loved the fresh eggs for breakfast and ending the day with relaxing on the patio after hiking. Yes, the ceilings are short but it's not a problem, we found it quite cozy. The kitchen area was large which was appreciated (especially having a compost bin).

  • Brittany was there to greet me when I arrived she gave me some loca tips that were helpful. Very convenient location 15 min walk to the health food store. The unit had everything I needed. I wished I could have stayed longer or just move in. Thank you for hosting me!

This unique, private Surf Shack is spacious, bright, and has every convenience you will need as your home base to explore the Big Island. The Surf Shack has a comfy bed, private bathroom with an outdoor shower, refrigerator, microwave, Keurig coffee maker, high-speed WIFI, Smart TV with premium cable and Netflix, and an outdoor patio area with a BBQ. Cooler, beach towels, boogie boards, kayak, and snorkel gear available for you to use during your stay. Parking is well lit for nighttime arrivals.
The Surf Shack is situated on half an acre and is fresh and airy with high ceilings. Big windows provide the feeling of bringing the outside in ;-) Please note: if you are noise-sensitive, this may not be the best place for you. Enjoy falling asleep to Coqui frogs and waking up to the resident roosters (roosters crow at all hours of night and day). It can get loud here! There are lots of birds, roosters, and the property is located off of a busy road in the Waiakea Homesteads neighborhood. We provide ear plugs and a sleep/sound machine if needed. In the Surf Shack you will find a Welcome Book, which provides information on the best ono grindz (good food) and fun local attractions. Parking is right along side of the Surf Shack. Late and early check-ins accepted. We will send you the door code and leave the light on for you. The Surf Shack is well lit and easy to find. Our location is central to East Hawai’i attractions and super easy access to the Saddle road, which drops you right into Kona.
Our neighborhood is right above the University of Hawaii at Hilo and the Imiloa Astronomy Center (a science museum). The Imiloa Astronomy Center has daily planetarium shows open to all ages as well as and a restaurant and gift shop. Keola, our cat, lives in the house and roams the yard. We also have wild chickens and a small duck named Petito. Enjoy the slack line and volleyball net or picking some in-season fruit from the trees on the property. Our property is located less than 10 minutes from the ocean in the Waiakea Homesteads neighborhood. You have full privacy but will most likely hear us moving about and may see us coming and going and/or working around in the yard and garden. We are an active family and all have full lives.
  • Its a fine place for a budget traveler basic.

    Greg2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • This space was a great central location. We didn’t hear much around us for noise. We slept with a fan on which covered any noise well except the odd rooster. My kids enjoyed the chicks and snails and exploring the yard.

    Hayley2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • This place is so charming & stylish! Peter & Share were as kind as can be, we'd be happy staying here again.

    Francesa2020-01-29T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great stay at Peter and Shea’s “Surf Shack”. It was exactly as described, but with an even more comfortable bed! The outdoor shower was wonderful, thoughtfully supplied earplugs made a difference with the night noise others have mentioned. Peter gave us a nice sense of the lay of the land. We would definitely recommend staying here.

    Delia2020-01-27T00:00:00Z
  • Had a great stay at this cute little place. Please be sure to read the reviews and the information posted by the owners. It is very accurate. Don’t go there and expect total peace and quiet because they are very clear about the little bit of traffic noise there is and the morning wake up call from the rooster. It didn’t bother us at all and like I said they like could not be more up front about it. Loved the outdoor shower! Owners have great communication which begins with the description of the unit, as well as during the stay. Would definitely stay again.

    Maria2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • Great cozy place, nice outdoor shower!

    Alex2020-01-21T00:00:00Z
  • This is a comfy little setup--fridge, microwave, coffeemaker and coffee, and even fresh oranges from the tree. Yes, noise, but the host reminded us of that and provides a noise machine and earplugs. It's rustic, but fills the need for a place to stay, do laundry, cook a bit, and even hang out with Netflix if you choose. Bed is very soft (personal whether this is good or not--just providing info).

This little screened-in, open-air Hale is nestled in a native Ohia rainforest between Hilo & Pahoa. The Hale is completely off-the-grid, uses solar power (generator backup) and has rain catchment. Private outdoor bathroom and shower. Secure, covered parking available. There is no kitchen and no refrigeration, but there is a camping stove and utensils plus a cooler to store all food - if your items are perishable, bring ice!
  • Cary's has a hidden rainforest gem! And she is an outstanding host. The place is zen simple allow you to rest and rejuvenate while taking in the sights and sounds of the native ohia forest with ferns, orchids, birds and the feeling of being totally in the forest. Outdoor shower was very private and enjoyable as the bed was comfy and cozy. Secure parking and worth going over a little bumpy road to get to! Her handmade soap is awesome too!

    Robert2020-04-15T00:00:00Z
  • I had a fantastic stay at Cary's. The location is a little out of the way, but makes up for that in charm and amenities. The tropical rain-forest setting is surreal - you might rub your eyes and wonder if you're dreaming. There are beautiful flowers, exotic ferns and plant life surrounding you. The bathroom was super clean, as was the room itself. There is a mini-burner for heating water, a french press for coffee, pretty much everything one needs for accommodation. I had a pleasant and memorable stay and would recommend it to anyone. Cary was an excellent host!

    Michael2020-03-26T00:00:00Z
  • I was already excited to stay at this spot, but walking up to Cary's place nestled in the rain forest was magical. Cary is a traveler herself, so each item in this cozy, open-air ohana was clearly carefully chosen. I cooked most meals on the camp stove, loved the outdoor shower, and the bed was super comfortable. Cary was very thoughtful about giving me privacy, but was also very welcoming and provided some great local recommendations for hikes and beaches to explore. I'm so grateful that she's created this magical spot for travelers to visit, and that I got to spend a few nights there. Mahalo!!

You are renting one room with a Queen size bed and crisp and clean white sheets. I come and go throughout the day and also do computer work from the living room.
    Quiet and peaceful
  • It was our first time in Hawaii and we chose Hilo as our home base since it was a lot cooler. We didn't want to be dying of heat and sweating all the time since we're from Canada. We are so glad we did. The place was clean. As for quietness, when you're surrounded by trees and lush forests, you'll hear plenty of nature early in the day and throughout the night. We eventually got used to it. If you are planning on staying in Hilo, this is a good bang for your buck.

  • A lovely space that I would highly recommend to anyone staying in Hilo - we were in a central location and the room was spacious and connected to a private bathroom. I loved ending my day listening to the rain in the room and Ashley was quick in communicating things like wifi or how to check in/check out.

  • Ashley’s place was very clean and in a great area! Only a 5 minute drive or 20 minute walk to Hilo’s restaurants and shopping. Also plenty of space in the kitchen and living room!

  • This was a great place to stay - quiet location, great value, nice kitchen and common areas. The walls are a little thin, so there isn't a lot of privacy, but it's to be expected in a house such as this. If you want a great value, incredible host, and convenient location, this place is for you.

Ocean view 1 bedroom guest apartment located in a very nice, safe and desirable part of Hilo. At 600 feet elevation, the breezes are cool and almost always present. Located just 2 miles from Downtown Hilo with excellent restaurants and the farmers market. Close and convenient access to Rainbow Falls, Boiling Pots, the Hamakua Coast and the Saddle Road. All taxes are included in our nightly rate and a portion of all income is donated to charities that we are passionate about.
Our home is in the middle of a 1/2 acre lush lot above Hilo. We have many fruit trees (that we are more than happy to share with you when in season), Palm trees and other tropical plants. The bedroom features a comfortable Sealy Queen size mattress, full dresser and closet. The kitchen features a full size fridge, coffee maker, toaster and stove top. ** Please note that the oven is currently not working, but the stovetop is. There is WiFi in the home, but no TV or cable, so please make sure to bring your own laptop, tablet or phones as desired. My wife and I live in the upstairs portion of this beautiful Hawaiian home with our 10 year old daughter and our friendly dog Rocky. We do our best to stay as quiet as possible whenever we have guests staying with us, but you will hear us from time to time and Rocky will most likely want to meet you. If you do not like dogs, no problem, just let us know in advance.
Our neighborhood is made up of very quiet and friendly residents so we do not allow any parties or gatherings in our rental unit and kindly ask guests to keep noise at a normal level.
  • Our one night stay at Jason and Virginia's place was amazing, and I wish we could have stayed longer. The guest suite has everything you would need during a trip to the Big Island, including beach towels, sunscreen, and umbrellas. The full kitchen was perfect for cooking with plenty of dishes, utensils, and sauces available. The bed was very comfortable as well. Our favorite part was the property. Jason and Virginia have created an oasis of fruit and palm trees! Last but not least, Jason's hospitality was unparalleled to any of our AirBnB experiences.

  • Jason's apartment is spacious and comfortable. It has a great view of Hilo Bay and is close to several beautful places like Richardson Beach Park and Rainbow Falls. It was a perfect location for our first night on the Big Island, and we wish we could have stayed there for our whole week's visit. Jason made us feel welcome and gave lots of tips on places to see, restaurants, etc. We also appreciate his commitment to supporting 2 nonprofits and to environmentally responsible practices.

  • The house was great for a 2 nights stop in Hilo for 2 adults and 1 child. It was very spacious, clean and ideally located, just a few minutes drive to downtown and also rainbow falls. Jason was very nice and greeted us with chocolates and fresh tangerine juice. I highly recommend this place!

  • Very nice accomodation, very big appartment and the penetrant are very lovely people! Highly recommendable!

  • Jason welcomed us personally (the first time in this 24day trip). They have a lovely tropical garden and a (distant) ocean view. If you are looking for luxury this may not be your cup of tea. It is clean, convenient and well supplied at a reasonable price.

    James2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • Loved staying here. Jason and Virginia were amazing. My friend hurt her leg and Virginia was incredibly welcoming and assisted us with finding a clinic. The place was central, very clean and cozy. Jason made us tangerine juice. What a treat. If you are looking to stay in a convenient awesome place in Hilo, look no further. Thank you so much for having us :)

  • We had a wonderful stay at Jason’s and Virginia’s lower level suite. It was clean, spacious and had everything we needed. Jason responded very quickly to any questions we had prior to our arrival and has a book of site seeing and restaurant recommendations that you can access should you book their suite. The suite was well located with easy access to downtown Hilo, Rainbow Falls, a nearby lava tube, and an easy hour drive to Volcanoes National Park. We would gladly stay at Jason’s again if we come back to Hilo.

  • We had a wonderful stay with Jason in their spacious downstairs apt. The apt was spacious, clean and had everything we needed. There is a charming outdoor porch to sit, with a view over the Hilo harbor

Feel like a local by staying in a sunny home strolling distance to the markets of downtown Hilo. Open louvered windows let tropical breezes flow through our classic plantation home. Enjoy coffee grown and ground a mile uphill, then use our to-go kits to cross the river and try poke at Poke Market. Watch the geckos play in the afternoon; listen to frogs sing at night. With our partner CarbonBuddy, offset your vacation's carbon footprint at https://www.carbonbuddy.com/hvec. We have made the sustainable choice our standard, so the only footprints you leave will be in the black sand beaches.
Hau’oli Hele ma lalo o na pua. A happy walk under the flowers. We love our flowers. We love seeing crisp grass, tall fronds, and a clean blue ocean. We understand that every community has a responsibility to protect these gifts and that the choices we make, however small, matter. Caring for and living with the land - the aina - has been our guiding principle in designing your vacation experience. When you stay in our hale, you will enjoy locally grown and roasted coffee from OK Farms, a coffee plantation just up the hill from home.
Our house is in Pu’u’eo, 3 blocks north of downtown Hilo. Stroll to local shops, try a new fruit at Locavore, and learn about Hawaiian reefs at the Discovery Center. This is an old Hawaiian neighborhood where many homes have been kept in the same ohana for generations; you may pass neighbors fishing the Wailuku on the bridge to town. You'll meet the neighbors' hens and ducks and you'll chase the geckos that speckle sun spotted walls. Our rainforest is vibrant with life happy to live Hawai'i.
  • This place was awesome! For a quick 4 day stay it was centrally locates and had everything we needed. Communication was very easy and check-in and out was easy as can be! This cute little house has everything you need and has great local recommendations. I would definitely stay here again.

  • We unfortunately had to cancel our trip because of the coronavirus. The owners were extremely gracious and immediately offered to give us a one year full credit. Thank you to the owners. We look forward to visiting. Chantal

  • This spot felt like home. An older house but had everything we needed including a few toys and books for our toddler. Walking distance to downtown and close to a park and waterfall. Great recommendations from the host on where to visit made our trip even better.

    Naomi2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • A great location just outside of downtown Hilo - 10 minute stroll to restaurants, bars, and shops. The home itself is cozy and full of character, well maintained, and we felt right at home. Thank you for a great stay!

    Rod2020-03-04T00:00:00Z
  • This is the perfect little historic home to stay in while visiting Hilo. It's in a central location, a short walk to the downtown shopping and dining area. The house itself and its decor is lovely; you almost want to spend most of your time here cooking in the large well-appointed kitchen or enjoying the breeze and neighborhood vibe--the local ducks and chickens are friendly--on the front porch.

    Rebecca2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • Everything was perfect, from the homemade mango bread to the sweet neighborhood ducks. The place was an easy walk into town and had everything we needed for a lovely3 day stay.

    Janet2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • If you are going to spend some time in Hilo, this place is great, being only a short walking distance from the center of this artsy little town. The beds were both comfy and nice, and the bedrooms quite large. A special treat was the fresh coffee beans which could be ground each morning and a beautiful jar of amazing granola, which we chose to add to our yogurt and fresh fruit. YUM... It is easy to tell that Danielle had a great eye for design, and taste as well, because everything from the cherry wood floors to the special coffee beans were perfect. Thanks for a great stay.

Perfect little home base tucked away downtown in Hilo with bright light and ocean breeze. This private room in shared house has a queen bed and is perfect for couples. Located just 5-10 minutes walk or drive from the airport, groceries, banks, pharmacy, restaurants, beaches, waterfalls, and more. Gardens surround the house, making it feel like a secret urban garden oasis. Great spot for east Hawaii exploration, or islandwide adventures. Simple and clean little crash pad, great for travelers.
The room is upstairs in the main house, facing west and looking over the garden. Its simple and clean; perfect for crashing in after adventuring around the island or arriving to Hilo on a late flight. The room is upstairs, with shared kitchen, washroom, and living room space. There are two rooms that are rented individually so there may be other guests. There are lots of coqui frogs chirping at night; earplugs are provided for lite sleepers. Hilo can be hot and/or humid at times. There is no AC but theres a fan in the room for guests to use. The house is raised up and nestled against a hillside and has lots of windows looking over the gardens that provide a sort of tree house view and feeling. There's almost always a nice ocean or mountain breeze flowing through, as the house is just a few hundred yards from Hilo bay front. Guests are welcome to peruse the gardens outside. There may be fruit to pick for breakfast, or cacao to make chocolate with. Theres a gym next door and neighbors close by so some background noise should be expected.
The house is located on the west border of downtown Hilo so there are several shops, restaurants, pharmacy, bank, parks, local coffee shops, etc. within walking distance. It is an urban setting so everything is close together. Downtown Hilo is quaint and charming. Very old timey and laid back, there are no high standards here.
  • A cozy hideaway in an jungle oasis, with many stray cats around.

  • Michael, is an awesome host! Loved the location, space and how adorable this place was! Very thoughtful touches and lots of little helpful little things to use during the stay....I'll definitely recommend your place and would consider staying at your house again...all the best!

  • Unforgettable experience of being submerged in a garden and jungle with an awesome hospitality and charming smile of the host. Simple place, but very comfortable stay with thoughtful touch of plant lover with big heart. Mahalo, Michael!

  • Michael was such a great host, the room was clean and cozy, and his place was super-convenient downtown. I will be staying here next time I'm in Hilo. Thank you!

  • Michael’s place was nice and clean, easy to find, and a quick walk into town. He was very friendly and helpful! I’d definitely stay again next time I’m in Hilo. He even left some fruits out on the counter for us to try!

    Taylor2020-03-11T00:00:00Z
  • Michael’s home is cozy, clean, exactly like the pictures. I would recommend using a fan provided to dim the neighborhood background sounds if you are a sensitive sleeper. This worked perfect for me. (Also, I can recommend Affordable Car rental if you need a local company for a car.)

    Alicia2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • A great affordable room in a great convenient location. Michael is very warm and welcoming. I happen to stay at the same time as two wonderful young women, and sharing the apt with them was fine. Would definitely stay again.

    Ty2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • In the quiet heart of Hilo and within walking distance to everything I wanted. Fresh fruit from the trees, keroke frogs in the evening, and always a friendly cat to converse with.
