Your guide to Foster

All About Foster

A gateway to Gippsland's spectacular natural attractions, the picturesque town of Foster is just 30 minutes from Wilsons Promontory National Park, and a short drive to other popular destinations including Shallow Inlet, Corner Inlet, Sandy Point, Waratah Bay and Victoria’s highest waterfall, Agnes Fall. Foster is also the major service town for the region with many shops, fresh produce stores, cafes, and bakeries.

Foster was founded in 1871 after a mini gold rush in the area, and there are memorials to commemorate the town's gold mining history in Pearl Park. Across from the park, in the town’s former post office is Foster’s historical museum, featuring displays of the region's gold history. The Hayes Walking track in town will lead you to the site of Victory Mine, Foster’s largest gold mine. The region is also known for its highly acclaimed cheeses, cool climate wines, craft beers, preserves, and fruit and vegetables. All this local produce can be enjoyed at the wineries and farm shops throughout the region, as well as at many weekend markets.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Foster

Spring and early autumn is a pleasant time to be in the area, when the days are mostly warm and sunny, and the nights are mild. In March, The Prom Coastal festival takes place in towns all over the region, celebrating the arts and fine food of Wilsons Promontory and its surroundings. There’s also live performances, music, exhibitions, and markets. Summer in the region will generally offer warm days and nights to enjoy outdoor activities and the beaches in the area. Just be aware that the weather can be changeable in this part of the world, even in summer — so it’s a good idea to pack a coat, along with a hat and sunscreen. Whenever you visit, you’ll find a great range of accommodations in Foster and other towns in this region of Victoria.
