Places to stay in Cape Breton Regional Municipality
The St. Anns lighthouse was built in 1905. This was a working lighthouse until 1962. We are restoring it and adding some modern luxuries for our guests to enjoy. The lighthouse is located in St. Anns, directly on the water. On the Cabot Trail. We are centrally located for you to enjoy all of what Cape Breton has to offer. Travel around the beautiful and scenic Cabot Trail. Enjoy the beautiful stars at night, and picturesque views of St. Ann’s Bay. The Gaelic College is just a few minutes away.
Stay at one of the most famous addresses in Canada, the Cabot Trail and at our decommissioned lighthouse. We started renovations in June 2018 and we have completed our first stage in time to open in August 2018. Every year we tackle a few more projects, in the fall 2018 we installed a new red metal roof, it looks amazing! In 2019 we enhanced the interior with shiplap walls, new kitchen floor, new storm door, moved and added a new wood stove to a center location and installed new trim work, keeping the historical Lighthouse in mind with every detail. This lighthouse has so much history. Follow us on Facebook, lighthouse on the Bay and watch our progress. The lighthouse is best suited for 2 guests. It’s super cozy with a king bed (Casper mattress) in the bedroom, and we do have a sofa bed in the living-room space. Our lighthouse is over 100 years old, so with this comes all of its unique features. We love our lighthouse and the natural surroundings, please ask if you have any questions prior to booking. Wake up to the ocean waves, have coffee on your front deck, watch the local fisherman haul up their traps, and take a walk on the beach. Walk our natural beach at low tide, find all kinds of treasures, sea glass and pottery that have washed up. Walk down the beach and find a secluded sandy beach area, bring a chair, beach towel, a little picnic and enjoy. We can help plan your stay, make local suggestions for restaurants, hire a fishing guide, or even provide a lobster dinner. The Gaelic College is just a story drive and Baddeck is 20 minutes. Cape Breton is beautiful. Our lighthouse is located on the bay in St. Anns, where you will see the most spectacular views, and the stars at night are the brightest you will see. Sometimes living in beautiful areas comes with some small inconveniences. Because of our mountains and valleys we can have some areas of the island with poor cell service, including St. Anns. On occasion we might get a local guest come and visit, some of our squirrels try to come in to save food for winter, they never come inside but you might hear them on the roof or the outside wall by the bathroom. Our closest grocery store is about 20 minutes away, in Baddeck. Yes, another inconvenience, but the only traffic jam will be the locals kayaking out front, some seals swimming by or eagles soaring by.
There is so much to see and do in St Ann's and all across Cape Breton. Locals love our varied cultures, and delight in the out-of-doors, as well. So many hiking trails, waterfalls, artisan shops, local restaurants, museums and music venues all across the island. The out-of-doors will always offer opportunities to enjoy our views and active lifestyles. Grab your fishing rod and head out along the streams and rivers that flow through our woods. Or try your hand at fishing for mackerel on the Jersey Cove shore. You can even dig for clams in the bay. In summer, take a boat tour out to the Bird Islands, nesting grounds of the Atlantic Puffin. Or kayak in the world-famous North River. St Ann's Bay is also famous for our world-class artisans. From May through November, you will find these folk busy creating stunning pieces in all kinds of media — you're welcome to watch them work. In the off-seasons, call ahead. In summer, plan to take a couple of days to visit every one!
  • This space is even better than the pictures can reveal. It is a wonderful space to hang out in and a perfect location to explore Cape Breton. Every detail has been thought about. The bed is extremely comfortable. It is very clean and beautiful. The views are absolutely breathtaking. We hope we can get back there soon.

  • We stayed here for 6 days during Celtic Colours. The property is superb in every way. It is ideally located close to the Gaelic College and Baddeck, giving you easy access to many of the excellent music and cultural events. John and Rosella are superb hosts.

    Wayne2019-10-21T00:00:00Z
  • It doesn't get any better than that. The lighthouse truly is one of the best accomodations we have had so far. Every detail is well thought out and arranged with love. The location and view are awesome. Plus the nice supplies that our hosts provided, including a bottle of wine. We would love to return one day.

    Axel2019-10-15T00:00:00Z
  • Had the most wonderful time at this beautiful lighthouse - we are bummed we didnt book for longer! The view, fireplace, comfortable bed... everything was perfect. If this lighthouse is available, book it now!! Will def be back again! Hosts were awesome to communicate with and made our stay easy and fun! Thank you :)

  • We stayed at the Lighthouse for three nights on our honeymoon and couldn’t have loved it more! It was cozy, awe inspiring and beautiful all in one shot. Rosella and John were the perfect hosts, and we hope to return some day!

    Marg2019-10-07T00:00:00Z
  • A real gem run by two very thoughtful hosts!

    Bruce2019-10-04T00:00:00Z
  • Rosella and John's place was truly amazing! We had such an fantastic stay in Cape Breton. The Lighthouse was clean, spacious and had everything we needed and more! Our hosts went truly out of their way to make our stay extra special. We really enjoyed waking up to the ocean views, kayaking on the bay and spending time up at the top of the lighthouse. We would definitely recommend staying here!

    Meredith2019-09-27T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great place and we enjoyed our stay a lot. The lighthouse is a very special place and was one of our favorites during our 3 weeks in Nova Scotia. Rosella and John are wonderful hosts, easy to communicate with and always available for questions and tips. We only had 2 nights but we found everyting we needed for the stay. We did not have the time to use all the available thinks like the Weber grill on the terrace or the canoes to scout the sea. This is really a place to calm down. The interior design is beautiful and perfectly fit to the whole nice atmospere in the kitchen/living room. You always have the view over the sea and there is also an white-headed sea eagle flying around. We never saw one from such a short distance. Very impressive. I can strongly recommend this place. We had a wonderful and relaxed time and we plan to come back but then for a longer time. Thanks a lot Rosella and John for sharing this place with other people :-)

  • Such a cute little place! Definitely worth a stay:)

    Kelly2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Ton went out of his way to cook for us even though it was off season and his restaurant was closed, provided snow removal so we woke up to a safe clear walkway and even lent us snow shoes for our hikes. Great place, great guy.

    Kevin2020-02-19T00:00:00Z
  • The cabins were cute and cozy (even in February), and Tom was very helpful with tips around the area!

    Rachel2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • We had a very nice stay. We enjoyed the simple coziness of the cabin, appreciated the washroom facilities, loved exploring the property, and were happy to have a cup of coffee in the cafe. A simple and accessible getaway location for us. Hit the spot!

    Nadine2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • Recommend this spot 100%. Cozy and clean with a view on the water for anyone who wants to enjoy a stunning sun rise.

    Alexandra2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • This stay was absolutely lovely. The cabin was the perfect cozy size, and the location is great - right along the Cabot trail. Even in January, the cabin remained cozy - thanks to the space heater that was already turned on, having it nice and warm for when I arrived. Ton was great to show the space, and the washrooms which are a few feet away from the cabin. He also gave me some pointers about the area, which is always appreciated. We brought pizza & snacks from home, as there’s no kitchen appliances, but that was no problem as we were aware of this ahead of time. All & all, I have no complaints about the stay and would love to go back! Highly recommend the Zzz Moose! ☺️

    Kelsey2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • Ton was the most welcoming host I have met, he greeted us at the door, walked us to our cabin and even lent us one of his frying pans. The cabin was cute and fit the 3 of us and 2 dogs perfectly. Even though it was snowing we were toasty warm all night. We even spent time in the evening on the deck cooking our food. And have to mention the beautiful beach and view. Then we had breakfast at the restaurant and I have to say, the best crepes I’ve ever had! A wonderful stay and will definitely be returning again.

    Lynsee2020-01-04T00:00:00Z
  • Great place to stay! Right by the ocean and the host offer breakfast and lunch at his restaurant everyday. Located right beside the cabins! Great food

  • Beautiful space. I stayed with a few girlfriends and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Went for a snowshoe down by the beach at sunset and woke up early to catch the sunrise. Stunning, plus amazing hospitality. Will definitely stay here again

    Danielle2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • Ton’s place was lovely! Check in was easy and he’s a fantastic host. The space itself was stunning - on the ocean and at night the sky is crystal clear/perfect for a relaxing getaway. The private bathroom areas were a lovely surprise - we didn’t end up eating at the cafe on site, but plan on making a point to do so the next time we’re in the area.

    Brittany2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • Great spot for an overnight getaway or a weekend trip. We brought our own snow shoes. Had a great time. :)

    Emma2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely stay at the cabin, it was spotlessly clean and well heated for January! 2/4 of our group opted to get the linen package which was very well organized. We also had breakfast the morning of checking out which was delicious! Ton was an extremely friendly host and very helpful to answer any questions we had during our stay! I would highly recommend staying at this lovely cabin while visiting Ingonish!

    Marissa2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • Had an amazing time at ZzzMoose this weekend! Ton was amazingly accommodating when we ran into issues with a storm and allowed us to arrange our dates last minute. The cabin was beautiful, and the views amazing. Snow shoeing along the beach was certainly a highlight, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a fun winter activity to do while staying at the cabin. It is easy enough for beginners and the whole family to enjoy! The cafe was great, the food was delicious, home cooked, and reasonably priced. We will be back for sure!

    Lauren2020-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • This was our second stay and we will definitely be back! The cabins are cozy during the winter, the property is beautiful and in a great location for hikes and snowshoeing. The Cafe has great food or you can bring your own and cook in the deck. Would highly recommend.

    Brett2019-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • Great place to stay. Right in front of the ocean. I would recommend to anyone.

    Maxime2019-12-01T00:00:00Z
  • My boyfriend had been talking about this place for weeks before we went and it exceeded all my expectations. Ton may be from away, but he had authentic island hospitality - I can't say enough good things about his management of these darling cabins. If you're looking for intimate, playful accommodations, this is the spot for you. My friendly advice is twofold: first, to bundle up well and watch the sunrise from the private beach, and second, to put your phone away during your stay; you're not going to want to miss a moment.

Explorer's Cottage provides an authentic country cottage experience on 150 wooded acres, with a private beach, a botanical park-like forest, bird watching, an orchard, a Japanese meditation garden, library, paved pathways, and a hiking path, all with a refined interior. Included: WiFi, coffee beans and tea, charcoal and propane bbqs, firewood, tv, fishing gear, + canoe. Licensed. 4.5 star rating by Canada Select.
Explorer's Cottage (License #2499) is located in the heart of Cape Breton Island in the middle convenient to sightseeing in all directions on a UNESCO biosphere reserve and waterfront on the Bras d'Or, part of the Atlantic Ocean. Cape Breton Island was voted the 1st Best Island in Canada in 2018 and 2019 and the 8th Best Island in the World by readers of Travel + Leisure magazine. Set on 150 acres of forest and in a botanical-park setting with over 100 specially planted trees, Japanese bridges, a birch forest, and a Japanese garden, Explorer's Cottage is a 4,000 sq foot retreat ideal for multi-generational family groups, friends traveling together, writing or artist workshops, or different families traveling together. Supporting the cottage also helps support the local caretakers. There is a first floor suite with a private bedroom with a Queen-sized bed, three twin beds, full bathroom with bath and shower, kitchenette with a refrigerator and dish washer, and separate washer and dryer. The first floor suite is perfect for multi-generational guests, different families or friends traveling together, or for guests who keep a different schedule from the rest of the home, such as couples who prefer more privacy, new mothers and fathers, and teens. Guests have a wide range of sleeping arrangements from which to choose throughout the entire home. For reservations made after May 1, 2019 when the price of the first floor suite began to be included, with smaller groups who do not need the first floor suite will be provided a discount per night reserved. Guests can create their own experiences with activities, including nature walks with local guides, paddling a canoe or stand up paddleboard from the private beach, fishing, learning about vegetable gardens, picking raspberries, and picking fruits. The property has three outdoor grills and two outdoor picnic tables, so guests can make meals in the gourmet kitchen with produce they pick themselves from the property and fish that they catch themselves in the area with a choice of three cooking locations on the vast property. Explorer's Cottage is furnished as a European country escape, with antiques in a modern way. Walk through a boreal forest, then a birch forest, on a winding asphalt pathway to the waterfront, picking blackberries along the way. There are often grouse sightings along the pathway, as well as woodpeckers, blue jays, hummingbirds, and many other bird and rare moth species. Guests are provided fresh coffee and tea selections by guest services to welcome them to the cottage. I also have another cottage on Airbnb, called Raspberry Cottage. Although the cottages are just across the street from each other, they are not visible to each other. Raspberry Cottage is smaller and has a water view from a sunny hill and an orchard: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/19358472
Explorer's Cottage is remote, but also very centrally located in Cape Breton Island and convenient to all sightseeing. While seated on 150 acres, and benefiting from the remote location in terms of having its own kitchen gardens and orchard, the property is still very close to necessities and attractions. The village of Baddeck is approximately thirty minutes away, and it offers golf, sailing, a free pontoon boat to Kinston Island, the Alexander Bell Museum, and restaurants. Puffin tours are just a few minutes away. The Cabot Trail is just twenty five minutes away, and other attractions are about an hour away in all direction. There is so much to do on the property as well that it is difficult to leave! Enjoy fishing, as rods are included, a guided nature tour through the private forest road and property, as well as raspberry, apple, and plum picking. Explorer's Cottage is ten minutes away from a gas station, 25 minutes away from a large grocery store in North Sydney, Nova Scotia, and 35 minutes away from a large grocery store in Baddeck, Nova Scotia. Please see the included manual on Airbnb for a map of the attractions and grocery stores. I have written a book for guests that they can refer to during their stay that helps them plan their trip. For people driving to the cottage from different states or provinces, I have started #CottageRoadTripAdventures on Instagram to showcase the places that people can visit on the way to the cottage from different directions. Please check this hashtag on Instagram.
  • Lovely host and beautiful cottage.

  • This was our second stay at the Explorers Cottage and it was another amazing weekend. The girls got great use out of the snowshoes, skis and toboggans that were available. Andra is an absolutely amazing host!

  • This has been our family's second Christmas holiday, 14 glorious days at Explorer's Cottage. The cottage is secluded and private with all of the amenities you will require for a short stay or for a longer duration. One of the highlights is the cedar log interior that compliments a grand stone fireplace to the ceiling in the living room along with large windows with a view of the water. It is immaculately clean, bright, open and inviting with lovely design features, beautifully decorated. Andra was a gracious host who responded to all inquiries immediately. Thank you to Andra and staff for making our Holiday truly wonderful.

Beautiful, rustic cabin sits cozily surrounded by woodlands. This one room retreat boasts a south west vista of the Bras d'Or Lake, inlcudes a veranda with gorgeous sunsets, king size bed, access to the beach and kayaks. What more could you want! It is half way between Baddeck and Sydney and a perfect spot for anyone travelling the Cabot Trail. Restaurants very close by.
This small, non smoking, cozy cabin is a great base camp from which to explore Cape Breton Island. It can comfortably sleep 2 adults and 2 children on the futon. From here, travellers are equidistant from the Cabot trail and all things West, to the Fortress of Louisbourg and other sites in Cape Breton. Or simply stay "home" and walk to the private beach where you can go Geocaching by kayak! The views from the property and beach are sunfilled and relaxing. Please contact the host on the day of arrival as check in can often be earlier than 5pm as well there are times that the check out is flexible.
Although not central in the urban sense, Boularderie Island is central to Cape Breton Island, thus ideal for touring all four counties. Here is the breakdown: Start of the Cabot Trail: 12 minutes Baddeck: 22 minutes St. Anns Gaelic College: 12 minutes North Sydney: 15 minutes Sydney: 30 minutes Louisbourg: 55 minutes
  • The pictures don’t do it justice! This cabin is the cutest. Really modern rustic decor makes it super cozy. Hosts provided all kinds of extra perks like coffee, treats and really interesting books. There’s also games, cards and of course the kayaks. We spent a lot of time on the deck enjoying the view. Great hosts, great cabin and great stay.

  • A great cabin in a great location. Easy access from cabin to the Trans Canada 105. The cabin was warm and cosy, with a supremely comfortable bed and excellent shower. Jody is a wonderful host and made sure we had everything we needed. We would heartily recommend this cabin as a base for exploring Cape Breton

  • September 10-13,2019 The Woodsy Cabin was everything we hoped it would be and more. The location was secluded, yet close enough to amenities (restaurants, etc.) and a great "jump off" point to begin our Cabot Trail adventure. The space itself is warm, comfortable and inviting and the bed....perfect. We were greeted with a lovely welcome note and pleasantly surprised with goodies of popcorn, chocolates and such. Super sweet and appreciated. To have popcorn by the campfire our first night, looking up at the star filled sky was pretty special. Jody and Parker provided everything needed in the event we planned on staying put i.e. utensils, hot plate, grill, coffee maker, etc. The home was clean, thoughtfully decorated and just a nice space to be in. We particularly appreciated the books by the bedside sharing the local history. It's those added touches that add up. The front deck is perfect for morning coffee or evening glass of wine even if bundled up in a blanket. And I would be remiss to not mention the kayaks!! We spent a morning kayaking to Seal Island bridge, past the lighthouse and back. It was serene; the water calm. I would recommend the Woodsy Cabin. Jody was very easy to communicate with and responded quickly to any question I had. Thank you, Jody & Parker for a memorable stay.

Very Private, brand new ocean front, 3 bedroom cottage on the world famous Cabot Trail. Set on a private 5 acre property with a brook, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Very clean, close to world famous Highland Links Golf Course, restaurants and shops.
We are located on the world famous Cabot Trail on beautiful Cape Breton Island, rated one of the most scenic islands in the world. Close by are world renowned golf courses such as Highlands Links Golf Course and Cabot Links, Cape Breton Highlands National Park and so much more.
  • We were eager to stay at a waterfront cottage and were dazzled when we drove in. The view was spectacular and an almost full moon reflected on the water was so beautiful. Inside the cottage was very clean, a fire had been laid and it was so cozy. Being able to do laundry was great. It was quiet. Great communication with the host. We want to visit again.

  • This home has the most spectacular view of the ocean and is very comfortable. Josh and Moe have thought of everything you will need- and the place is well equipped and spotless. We found it easily as the directions are very good. This location is ideal to explore the Cabot trail and still make it home before dark! It is quiet, away from everything and the night sky is incredible!

    Maryclaire2019-09-03T00:00:00Z
  • Moe is an amazing host. Really an amazing place. Will be going back again soon.

    Shahed2019-08-31T00:00:00Z
  • Josh and his father Moe really brought the hospitality of Cape Breton to our travel experience. From our first visit to Baddeck where Moe served us fish and chips, to the helpful arrival instructions, every detail was carefully considered. This charming cottage, perfectly situated on the rugged coastline was a sublime place to experience life on the Cabot Trail. It couldn't have been better!

    Carl2019-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • This home is a true oasis of beauty and tranquility. The view is pure ocean in every direction and an infinitely star filled sky. I would love to visit this cottage in any season but being here during summer allowed us the refreshing experience of a swim in the sea... The house is perfect for cooking a full family meal and for relaxing by the fire. The property is divine With both forest and Fields and a lovely walk down to the beach.

    Paulina2019-08-24T00:00:00Z
  • Moe was a super host. He was always accessible when we had any questions. The view is spectacular. If you want to be out at night to watch the stars make sure you have insect repellent on. Moe has everything you need. He also is busy with his Captain Capers Fish and Chips in Beddeck which you need to go their earlier in the day because he sells out it is so good. We stayed 2 nights and spent a day exploring the area. The Cluckin Hen is right up the road and is open until 7. Has breakfast lunch and dinner and a bakery. The glass shop across from the restaurant is awesome. All handmade. We then went to Ingonish Beach. It was rainy so we didnt stay long but there are beautiful hiking trails. We also went to McIntosh Pond Falls which is a short really nice hike along the pond. There is campground there. Dont bother going to Mary Ann Falls. The road to get there is 2 miles of a bad rotted road and there are better falls to see. We ate at The Main Street Restaurant and Bakery for dinner and breakfast. All 4 of us had excellent meals. Robin and Cole were our waiters and were very friendly. This was our first trip to Nova Scotia and we would love to be able to come back again.

    Susan2019-08-23T00:00:00Z
  • The views were amazing, and the cottage was so clean with endless thoughtful amenities! Our stay was perfect, and the space and views were somehow even better than we expected. This was one of the best experiences I have ever had at an AirBNB, and it was the perfect way to relax after our wedding. I offer my highest recommendations for anyone who wants to stay at this beautiful cabin!

  • The house has the most spectacular view of the Atlantic with incredible sunrises. The house is clean and roomy and has many thoughtful touches. We ate a delicious meal at Josh’s Dad’s ‘Captain Capers Fish and Chips. Moe is the sweetest guy. My grandkids loved him. Moe offered us lots of great suggestions. We stayed two nights but wish we had booked for a longer stay.

The neighbourhood We are located just 3km's off the World Famous Cabot Trail at 645 Murray Rd. The area is called St. Ann's Bay and it the home to many great artisans. You could spend an entire day just visiting them. There are hikes close by and our kayaking company is just across the street. It is a very quiet little oasis.
  • Beautifully built cabins with a very unique decor. Had a great time, would definitely stay again.

  • We enjoyed our time here... unplugged from the world. Quiet and serene!

    Ronda2019-10-24T00:00:00Z
  • Angelo was very helpful and friendly! His cabins are cozy, secluded, and each have a unique decoration/theme. It was right on the water and in a beautiful area with fall colored leaves. I definitely recommend these cabins and will hope to be back one day!

    Cody2019-10-23T00:00:00Z
  • Great location and the cabins are beautiful! Highly recommend!

    Courtney2019-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • Angelo’s space was magical! An absolutely enchanted experience. The cabins sit in a beautiful wooded area on the water. The structures are beautiful - the cabins each unique, the wash house very clean and the cooking space a great place to hang. He has a great observation deck. My girls and I had a blast and enjoyed all the thoughtful touches! Angelo offered great tips on nearby activities. We will be back.

    Karly2019-10-18T00:00:00Z
  • What can we really say to put this creation into words that will do it justice. The cabins are modernly quaint. The view from the dock stunning. Angelo has put so much thought and love into every detail of the spaces. From the keychain, to the stained glass, the ironwork on the lofts, curtains, their tie backs. There is a guitar in every cabin with some instruction, be sure to pick it up and give it a try! Also, be sure to ask to listen to Angelo's music, you will certainly appreciate it. We could go on and on, but you really just need to see and experience this for yourself and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Thank you Angelo!

  • We had a great time at Lianes place, the cabin was beautiful and very clean. Liane was easy to communicate with and very accommodating to us. We would love to come back again some time!

  • If your looking for a peaceful & quiet place to get away and disconnect, this is your place. I've never been so relaxed and tranquil. You have so much privacy. Hosts were great, they were there if you needed them, but gave you your space. I loved the privacy of the hottub and how you got it all to yourself and no worries of anyone around. We loved our stay, we will be back. I didn't want to leave❤

    Amanda2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage was beautiful and very clean. Liane was great to communicate with and was quick to respond to any questions I had. We enjoyed our stay and would return again.

    Taylor2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • I had mentioned to Liane during my booking that the trip was for my girlfriend's birthday. When we arrived at the Cottage Loon, my girlfriend was surprised and extremely happy to see that Liane had provided us with a bottle of wine and a very nice birthday card. Needless to say, this was a wonderful touch and way beyond and above expectations! The Cottage Loon itself was very clean and cozy and had a fantastic view, but the real treat was the outdoor hot tub. Both nights we were there we were enjoying a cider in the hot tub under the stars, it was magical. We even did a hike, the entrance of which was just across the road. All in all, we had a fantastic time and would highly recommend staying here!

    Devin2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • What an amazing spot! This was the perfect relaxing getaway. The cozy cabin was spotless and we really enjoyed the space/the scenery. Definitely hope to return!

  • The cabin was nestled away in the woods where me and my friends decided to have a night get away for some girl time. The cabin was so cozy and clean, it had everything we needed to cook our own food and cool our drinks. The hot tub was was located down from the cabin where we booked a two hour session and it was absolutely lovely. Overall our stay was fantastic and we will most definitely be coming back ! Liane was a attentive host and helped us with everything we needed.

Our cozy wilderness cabin offers total privacy on 50 acres of old growth forest. It offers a stunning view of the North Mountain/Aspy valley out to the distant ocean. Close to Cape Breton Highlands National Park, trails, kayaking/biking, beaches & whale watching. Private trail down to the pristine North Aspy river. Simple and rustic with deck, kitchenette, bed, BBQ. For weekly rentals-free kayak rental included. Not for the faint of heart with rugged driveway, steep land and wild creatures.
Our space is unique as it offers a rustic and wild bit of paradise just off the Cabot Trail. If you like, you will see no one at all. The cabin is a simple one room building, well the bathroom is closed off from the rest :). Newly renovated it offers a deck, kitchenette (mini fridge, microwave, hotplate, toaster oven, sink) with a small woodstove and BBQ outside. One of the next best features is its location here in Northern Cape Breton, just off the Cabot Trail, with access to both the eastern and western sides of the National Park. It is a short drive to stunning barrier beaches, like John Cabot's Landing Provincial Park. There are several local shops and restaurants only a short drive away. It is a WILD place though. The driveway is rough. The land is steep. The creatures are wild. This is no 5 star resort :) This is a wilderness cabin. With a flush toilet and running water. No wifi. No TV. And the radio either brings in a newfoundland station or CBC radio, depending on the weather. Good cell service for bell/aliant/telus customers. Rogers customers are out of luck.
The area is very unique, with small communities dotting a rugged coastline. The National Park lies to the east and west of you, while the Aspy Wilderness Area stretches out in front. It is the perfect place for all your outdoor adventures.
  • We had an amazing few days at the Sunrise Wilderness Cabin. The view is just spectacular, the pictures don't do it justice. The cabin is private and secluded, and we felt like there was no one else for miles. The cabin is clean and comfy, and has everything you need - we loved staying in on a rainy day with the wood stove going. The local tips that Jennifer offers are very helpful - we took her advice for various hikes and outings and weren't disappointed! If you're looking for a quiet, peaceful, relaxing getaway, look no further! Thanks Jennifer - we'll be back! :)

    Jamen2019-10-19T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful little cabin, off the Cabot Trail enough so as to hear only nature. Loved the wood stove. Got chilly at night so was great to stoke a fire before bed and get toasty. Bed was comfortable. Nice touch having a water cooler and a barbecue. Both were put to good use. The deck overlooking the mountains is the clincher - I could sit and stare for days. I missed the hiking path to the large maples, too much to do. It’ll have to wait until next time.

    George2019-10-11T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderfully simple yet everything necessary for a comfortable stay. Seemingly isolated but convenient to everything this part of the world has to offer, mostly spectacular scenery and a close association with Mother Nature. Who could ask for more.

    Wesley2019-10-05T00:00:00Z
  • Million dollar view and everything you need to enjoy. Rustic for sure, but not rough. Peaceful and cozy. Would go back in a heartbeat.

    Angela2019-09-23T00:00:00Z
  • The view. The view. The view! We fell in-love with the cabin - an awesome place to relax and make a meal after hiking and exploring. The perfect spot to be cozy on a rainy fall day. Jennifer went above and beyond to be sure that we had a fantastic Cape North experience. I would go back again tomorrow if I could.

A peace and stillness exists in St. Esprit that everyone who visits can recognize and embrace. A once sacred Native American gathering place, St. Esprit was deserted after French/British tensions. This turned what was once a bustling country village into a rare isolated backcountry of Canada. Our retreat was created to help people return to their sacred roots within nature, to enjoy the crisp & fresh air of canada‘s outback and to help one‘s eyes enjoy the soothing qualities of being able to look as far as the horizon can take your gaze. Located on the southern- most shore of Cape Breton on the northeast tip of Nova Scotia, there is significant gulfstream influence in comparison to other areas of Nova Scotia due to its easterly location. This results in a oceanic-maritime climate which features significant seasonal lag just like San Fransisco with September almost coming in as the warmest month of the year. Our neighbor, Sable Island, is 187 km south of St. Esprit Island and it acts as one of the closest landmasses to sable island. In terms of privacy, you will find the peace and quiet in the midst of nature that few places can offer. Most of the time there will be no one else around for kilometres on end, allowing you to relax by the lake and the adjacent oceanside beach, hike along trails, or boat to the Atlantic Ocean via kayak/canoe without anyone else disturbing your vacation experience. No restaurants are in the area (nearest is 30 min away which includes fine dining), however, upon request, homemade gourmet pizza can be made and delivered as room service (30 dollars - 12 inch pizza)
  • Our stay at the Falcon Cottage was very memorable and equally enjoyable. Being surrounded by nature with extreme privacy was on our wish list, and we found that embodied in this spot. The place was very clean, cozy and had all the amenities needed for a joyous stay. The hosts were very kind, punctual and fast with responses to any questions, and went above and beyond to ensure that our comfort and satisfaction was met. The private jacuzzi experience in the middle of wilderness was amazing, so was the hot sauna, I highly recommend trying both! We look forward to visiting again in the summer/fall and enjoy the lovely lake view from the cottage!

    Hassan2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • WOW!! This is the best place either of us has ever stayed!!! If you're wondering wether its worth the money the answer is YES, 1000%. The falcon cottage is beautiful and romantic! It's filled with impressive handmade log furniture, the bed was more comfortable than most hotels, and everything was super clean and modern. Amazing star gazing, the hot tub was so relaxing, next time we're definitely booking more than one hour in it! Liane was great, we only booked one night but the weather had turned bad the day of checkout so she offered us a second night free of charge so that our car didn't get stuck trying to get up a hilly driveway covered in wet slushy snow. We were so impressed we definitely want to go back in the summer and use the kayaks and explore the wilderness more. Save up & book several nights because once you get there you won't want to leave!

    Nina2020-02-19T00:00:00Z
  • Such an amazing experience, cottage falcon was absolutely beautiful, so so clean and the bed was like a cloud. Hot tub was super great as well, everything was so private too, couldn’t see or hear anyone! Lianne was so sweet also, left us a few snacks and drinks :) Wifi was great too!

    Amy2020-02-17T00:00:00Z

The private hot tub was so relaxing with the pathway of lights and the cabin was so comfortable. Had everything you needed for a little getaway. We will be coming back for sure! Liane was an awesome hostess and responded quickly to any messages we sent.

  • Liane is quite literally the best host I’ve encountered on AirBNB. Her cottages have a homely feel to them which truly makes you feel at home and comfortable while seeking a getaway. My partner and I stayed at cottage Falcon and loved it so much we requested to extend our stay. The hot tub has a magnificent view. We enjoyed having our morning coffees by the peaceful lake that surrounds the location. I will be returning and have recommended this same stay to many of my friends. :-)

  • If you are looking for a private, secluded stay then this place is for you. The serenity of the cottage exceeded all our expectations. We went to celebrate our 5 year wedding anniversary & were greeted with a beautiful bottle of wine, which was so appreciated. There is no cellphone service in the area but the wifi worked for us while we were in our cottage as well as out on the grounds (in the hot tub for example) Such a relaxing atmosphere, we will definitely be back.

  • Perfect spot for a romantic get away in the middle of the wilderness. Stayed here for my boyfriend’s birthday and it was magical. From the beautiful scenery, peace and quiet, to our view of the frozen lake it doesn’t get much better. Liane and staff are amazing hosts, they even left a bottle of wine and matching robes for the hot tub. We made a furry friend (the friendliest cat). He made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. He hung out around our cabin for a while and even followed us to the hot tub. If you are staying here show him some love! Overall a 10/10 accommodation, easy to locate, spotlessly clean, and cozy. Would highly recommend it to anyone seeking some adventure and relaxation in Cape Breton!

Between the Beachhouse and what you do on your stay, you will have a relaxing, restorative vacation. You can't ask for more than that. The innkeepers were easily contacted and deal with whatever your issue is very quickly. Will be back.

The beach house is well stocked with board games, beach blankets, Netflix, etc. Great BBQ and fire pit as well. Hosts were very attentive to our questions but they kept their distance and respected our privacy. Can't speak highly enough about this place.

  • Boutique hotels in San Francisco and Los Angeles could learn a thing or two from Shauna and Peter’s Place. I’m a clean freak and this place met my high standards, location is great for access to everything (car is a must in Sydney), and it’s very quiet. Shauna and Peter were easily accessible for any info required. Deserves a Michelin star!

    Kirk2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • I had a great time staying in Shauna & Peter's suite! They were extremely accommodating and provided additional touches to their place that were really thoughtful. The suite itself was easy to find, easy to access, extremely clean, and had loads of bonus amenities. Shauna and Peter checked in on me during my stay and were extremely kind. The location was really convenient if you are visiting Membertou Trade & Convention Centre and close enough to downtown Sydney. Definitely would recommend staying here.

  • Great location / total comfort / will be the best Airbnb experience you will ever have!

    Robert2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • My stay at Shauna and Peter’s place was wonderful. The unit was incredibly clean and comfortable; with super thoughtful touches that made settling in a breeze. The location is very central and the privacy the unit affords was perfect. I had to extend my stay and their quick response made the process a stress-free breeze. I’d totally recommend staying here for some true east coast hospitality!

  • Great stay in a snow storm! Very clean and all the amenities to make me have a home away from home.

Fantastic space, new build, overlooking the beach and ocean (where the Atlantic Ocean flows into the Bras D'or Lakes). Bright and spacious, open concept living space with 10 foot ceilings. Hardwood floors throughout. Main level bedroom and 2nd level loft which has three single beds and half bathroom. The loft is very spacious and has good headspace. Surround deck with glass. Excellent location close to amenities and festivals. WIFI Pets are welcome (pet fee).
10 foot ceilings, maple hardwood floors throughout, open concept kitchen and living area. There is a bedroom on the main level with a double bed. The large loft has three single beds and a half bathroom. It is very spacious and although the ceilings are angled there is 8 feet head space. The loft has a spectacular view of the beach! There are nice ocean breezes, and you hear the waves of the ocean, quiet and secluded. Pets are welcome, additional fee $75
Enjoy your holiday in central location of Cape Dauphin at the base of Kelly's Mountain, in newly built beach house. This location is close to the many festivals throughout the Island. A 30 min drive to Baddeck, 20 min drive to Gaelic College and start of the Cabot trail. A 30 min drive to North Sydney where you can get groceries and supplies. This beach house is located in an area that is a piece of heaven.
  • What a beautiful view! We loved staring out the window into the ocean and the little bay, and walking down to the beach to explore with our toddler. Richard was quick to respond to our question about wifi, which was appreciated. We drove Cabot trail one day and stayed in the next. Very nice location 🤩

    Nancy2019-10-23T00:00:00Z
  • Very nice "bunk house" with great view of sound (bay?). Upstairs loft (3 single beds & bath) has ladder type access - not good for older folks or young kids. Downstairs bedroom with double bed is no problem for seniors (also bath downstairs). Unit is about 5 miles down a dirt road. Road is pretty good but there are some rough patches. Normal cars are no problem but will get pretty dirty.

    Ellen2019-10-17T00:00:00Z
  • Extremely clean and situated in a beautiful spot, this place is a real stand out. Great base for exploring the island.

    Natalia2019-09-26T00:00:00Z
  • Spectacular views!

    Darlene2019-09-16T00:00:00Z
  • If you’re looking for a retreat that is quiet and peaceful, this is the place. It is absolutely perfect. We enjoyed the scenic views of the ocean and pond from the deck or in the living area - the beavers were especially entertaining! Beach and pond access is just a short walk down a cleared maintained path. The house itself is absolutely quaint and the hospitality is wonderful. Highly recommend.

  • Beautiful on the water, private breach area. Clean and modern.

The perfect home-base for exploring Cape Breton, or a clean and comfortable seaside retreat, MacLeod Cove is a 3-bedroom winterized cottage on the Bras d'Or, Cape Breton's beautiful inland sea. Enjoy ocean views and semi-private cove, within 25 minutes drive of Baddeck, North Sydney (Newfoundland ferry terminal), and the Cabot Trail. The cottage is also very private and surrounded by pristine natural environments of forest, creek and cove. Wildlife sightings are common both on land and in the sea. The cottage is fresh and clean with new paint, flooring, appliances and furniture.
We inherited this home from my mother who was a smoker but it has been a strictly smoke-free space since February of 2017. In order to make it clean and comfortable both for our family of non-smokers as well as for you, we removed or cleaned all furniture. We replaced all upholstered furniture, beds, bedding, towels and rugs. We removed all carpeting and replaced it with new carpet or vinyl flooring. We washed every surface, every outlet, and all fixtures. We also replaced the fridge and stove, as well as all of the small appliances. We primed and then painted all of the walls. We have a house keeper who will ensure that the windows are opened, and the cottage is freshly cleaned prior to your arrival with clean linens on the beds, and floors and counters freshly sanitized.
This is very much a private retreat into nature. Our neighbours on one side are about 100 feet away and on the other side, are across our small valley. For the most part, you can't see any neighbours either from the house or the cove. Wildlife is common: many species of birds, fox and other animals populate the area. It is not uncommon to spot a seal swimming by from the cove. The nearest towns are 20 minutes drive or about 25 miles in either direction, so a little planning ahead is required in order to have supplies and groceries on hand. There is an excellent seafood restaurant very nearby - about 8 minutes by car, across the bridge. Gas and Tim Hortons coffee are a little closer as well - about 15 minutes away by car. Within a short drive of the house are long beaches for walking, as well as a natural fresh water fall with a pool for (very chilly) swimming. The house sits directly on the sea, at the base of Kelly's mountain. In the fall, the colours on the mountain are spectacular. The 2 nearest towns are Baddeck and North Sydney. Baddeck is a very popular a picturesque town with a beautiful lighthouse, shops, galleries, many restaurants and both an excellent museum and golf course. The nearest medical center is in Baddeck. North Sydney is a port town with all the necessities: large grocery stores, banks, and restaurants. It is also the location of the Newfounland Ferry docks. An hour away is the much larger port city of Sydney that has all of the amenities as well as the airport which is the only entry point to Cape Breton for travelers arriving by commercial aircraft.
  • Fantastic place and amazing value for what you get - great location and would definitely return there again

    Damien2019-10-26T00:00:00Z
  • Great location! Beautiful spot :)

    Korinne2019-10-23T00:00:00Z
  • Very clean. The house is as pictured. Excellent location for Celtic Colours festival.

    Benjamin2019-10-19T00:00:00Z
  • This cozy little cottage made for the perfect fall get away. It had everything we needed to cook meals, it was sparkling clean and very comfortable. Getting there was no problem with google maps. There are also some really nice hiking trails within a 30 minute drive. We loved the beautiful view and sitting on the deck watching the water. There isn’t any wifi at this cottage, but we found we didn’t need it. Cell phone reception was perfectly fine! This is a lovely and very relaxing spot, would go back for sure!

    Brittany2019-10-07T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great cottage. You will have great views of the water. The kitchen has everything you need. There are nice decorator touches throughout the home. The cottage was very clean. We found the location to be very convenient for our itinerary. We wanted, of course, to do the Cabot Trail, but also see Louisbourg. This location was a good compromise. You will feel like you are in the woods ( which you are), but amenities are not far away. Follow Sheila’s suggestions for the 2 cafes. They were great. If I am fortunate to be able to return to Cape Breton Island, I would definitely like to stay here again.

    Susan2019-09-30T00:00:00Z
  • The house is in a truly beautiful, secluded location above a cove which can be accessed down a steep path to a small beach. There is a large deck area which looks out to the water, a gas BBQ, and a line for hanging washing. Inside the house is tastefully furnished throughout. The kitchen is very well equipped but note there is no microwave oven. Downstairs is a lounge with an amazing selection of dvds for movie nights. Louisbourg Fortress is only about an hours drive and it is well worth planning a whole day for your visit. Baddeck is a pretty town beside the lake. Hurricane Dorian prevented us from travelling further afield. Sheila really is a super host - she allowed us to stay an unplanned extra night as we were advised not to drive in the aftermath of the hurricane. We would fully recommend Macleod Cove as an outstanding place to stay when visiting Cape Breton.

    Tony2019-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • Sheila’s place was gorgeous! Easy communication and check in was the icing on the cake. Everything was as expected, and close to everything we wanted to do and see during our stay.

    Michelle2019-09-04T00:00:00Z
  • If you are looking for a great place to use as home base for day exploring from Baddeck to Louisbourg and the areas central to The Big Bras d'Or lakes. This is it. It is immaculate, well appointed and with a great kitchen for any range of meal. Morning coffee on the deck is super quiet and serene, it was like living in the Canadian wilds but just a quick drive out to the noisy Trans Canada Highway 105 and people/places/things.

This amazing, private property is nestled snuggly on the most Northern tip of Cape Breton Island. Relax on the deck with a book from the private library as you listen to the whales playing in the Atlantic or travel the short distance to the wharf for fresh seafood and take in some of the local entertainment: you, too, will want to dance a jig to the fiddler's tune. Roast marshmallows in the fire pit after a fantastic hike or share a glass of wine on the balcony off the master bedroom.
Owned by a local, fifth generation fisherman with his wife and daughters who want to share the joy (and maybe a moose or two) with you and your loved ones. Enjoy an authentic Cape Breton retreat now: the friendliest people, the most splendid panoramic view, and the harmony of nature are waiting for you.
Access to many private hiking trails directly from the property, whale watching, hiking tours, berry picking, bird watching.
  • This is a great place to make a home base if you're going to travel around the Cabot Trail. The views from the house are spectacular and the grounds are beautifully kept. make sure you carve out time to spend a few hours gazing up at the night sky! I'd definitely recommend it to everyone hanging out in Cape Breton! :D

  • Amazing views from two balconies, could spend all day watch the sea and sky

    John2019-10-24T00:00:00Z
  • In the middle of our Celtic Colours bonanza, I wanted a place to take a break from the hustle and bustle, unwind in peace and enjoy the beauty that is Cape Breton. I am so happy I found Darryll and Jocelyn’s place. Such an awe inspiring view from the deck, listening to the ocean and the marker buoy (and I only know the second one because Sonny told me!) was the perfect medicine. This is a lovely place; comfortable and homey. There are basics available in the kitchen; which was really appreciated since I don’t travel with garlic powder, salt and pepper in my carry on. The bed was comfortable and we slept well. If you’re heading up the Cabot trail and plan to spend some time in the north highlands, stay here. You won’t regret it.

    Kimberley2019-10-17T00:00:00Z
  • What a magnificient view that i saw from the master bedroom! The location was close to the mid point of cabot trail, which is awesome. I will definitely choose to stay here again on my next visit to CB.

  • Darrell and Jocelyn were wonderful hosts. We enjoyed meeting them and had a brief but great stay. The room was nice with a very comfortable bed, and a great breakfast was provided as well! We highly recommend staying here if you are in the area.

One of three very secluded cottages at Big Hill Retreat. Experience peace and quiet in a wilderness setting. A very private cozy cabin for 2.
The Cozy A-Cabin is recommended for 2 people . The main floor includes Kitchen and living area and bathroom with shower (no tub). The wood stove along with the electric baseboard heat will keep it toasty warm on the coldest winter night. There's always plenty of firewood in the wood shed attached to the building. The stairs to the loft are steep but well designed and solid. There is a double bed in the loft. The kitchen is compact and simple but everything is there. There is a propane cook stove to the right of the sink. Enjoy the wilderness views for eating, sleeping or meditating.
This is one of 3 cottages here at Big Hill Retreat. It's the most secluded and private of our cottages with an expansive and beautiful pure wilderness view of the Cape Breton Highlands.
  • Fantastic cabin and host. Will stay at the A-Cabin during my next cabot trail road trip.

    Andrew2019-11-01T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great time at A-Cabin. The view from the cabin is amazing and the trails around the property were beautiful. The cabin had everything we needed. Thanks to the hosts for the wonderful stay.

  • You search the silence? Then go for it. Terry's hospitality is absolutely great. The house itself is very cozy, very silent....we loved it there. The trails belonging to the property are amazing as well. Might be a challenge to get to the house in Winter. :-) Thanks a lot, such a great place!

  • Love the relaxing atmosphere, beautiful trails and scenery. Beautiful pottery! Friendly hosts and dog! 🙂

    Crystal2019-09-21T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed for a week and had a wonderful time. Terry was very friendly and always available if needed. Check in process was a breeze, the place was cozy and clean. The view from the cabin is breath taking, the fire pit outside is a much appreciated added touch, as well the fireplace indoors helped keep us cozy in cool nights. There was ample wood for the fire available. We used the BBQ for our meals, had drinks on the patio under the stars, made a fire outdoors and listened to the crickets. The location is so close to the Cabot Trail - you couldn’t ask for a better spot. My partner and I eloped during our vacation and had such a memorable experience, we plan to come back again with our two pups who also had a great time. Highly recommended!

    Doreen2019-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • We loved the place, very warm and cozy. We had everything we needed, the view was beautiful and it was so peaceful! It's a short drive to Baddeck, so a good place to explore Cape Breton and the Cabot trail. Highly recommended.

    Joachim2019-08-23T00:00:00Z
  • We had a very pleasant stay in the A-Cabin. As the listing mentions, the cabin is clean and comfortable. We particularly enjoyed the tranquility. It is possible to walk in the trails that leave directly from the cabin. The cabin is also well located for day trips around Cape Breton.

    Laurie2019-08-04T00:00:00Z
  • The Cabin is exactly as described. It is the perfect place for a couple who wants to be for themselves, just bring your provisions and forget about the rest of the world (the nearest place to Buy groceries is 12km away). There is no luxery, but the equipment is sufficient. There is a pond in the property which is wonderful for swimming. The trails give some "wilderness " feeling (but bring good bug repellant). Terry is a very discreet host, but always available if needed. We spend 9 days and will happily come agan.

Alone on a forested cliff above a pristine barrier beach and a stunning ocean view, this cozy two bedroom cottage is just off the Cabot Trail in Northern Cape Breton. The cottage offers stunning ocean and beach views; while tucked into the woods, hidden from view itself. Clean fresh wood interior, new appliances and gorgeous art complete it. A private retreat close to Park hiking trails. Free kayak rentals for week long rentals. Enjoy privacy and solitude where the mountains meet the sea.
This is the perfect little getaway for two, it's a small 600 sq ft cottage, with lovely wood paneling and big windows. It has a great little kitchen, and a fantastic deck to sit out and take in the view. The Cottage is located close to a provincial park, a barrier beach, Sugarloaf Mountain hiking trail, and the fishing village of Bay St Lawrence. The cottage is clean and cozy, and simple. The real perks are the privacy, the view and location; it sits on 10 acres of birch and spruce, with a small brook on one side. The ocean views looks down the cliffs of Cape North to one side and out across all of Aspy Bay to White Point and the South Mountain range of the National Park. The sea rolls, fishing boats pass by, gannets soar and dive. Seals pop up. The cottage over looks a cliff edge though, with a 20 metre drop onto said barrier beach and some rocks, so it is not suited for children or pets (or overly wine soaked artists); the location requires sensible behaviour. New this year; wifi!!
Behind you to the north rises Sugarloaf Mountain, while north east the road continues to Bay St Lawrence and Meat Cove. The Hut Takeout and Oshan Whale Tours are worth the visit. As you turn east and then south the panorama lifts you along the north mountain range to Money Point and Cape North, where the North Atlantic Sea takes over, a blip of St Paul Island and an endless stretch of water across Aspy Bay to the village of White Point at the base of the South Mountain. Heading west now your view skims the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, and the start of the Barrier Beach begins at South Harbour. The beach stretches towards you, 3 miles long, passing the towns of Cape North and Dingwall where you will find several restaurants, our kayak shop, 2 museums and some shops. Check out (URL HIDDEN) for a full listing on the area.
  • Beautiful, quiet relaxed atmosphere! View of the ocean is the best!

    Lisa2019-10-21T00:00:00Z
  • The view is priceless. If quiet and solitude is what you need, this place is super. We stayed for four nights and were sad to leave. One of the hosts is an artist and her work adorns the walls and keeps it homey. One small thing that was appreciated was a long low table in the bedroom for suitcases.

    Theresa2019-10-04T00:00:00Z
  • This was an excellent rental for location, value and cleanliness. We hiked and this cottage on the cliff was everything we hoped. We enjoyed the sound of waves, saw some seals in the water below, relaxed on the patio after a long day of hiking. Buy your gas and groceries before you get up to the cottage, but if you haven't there's a decent, well stocked market nearby. Wish the weather was a little better for water sports, but we did travel later in September, so we didn't expect to do too much on the water. All in all, a great cottage and I would like to spend another trip here and hopefully stay longer. The host supplied drinking water. We didn't drink the tap water as recommended, but it was fine for washing. No complaints.

  • This is a great place to enjoy exploring the area as well as for just plain relaxing and soaking in the beautiful view. It is also a very quiet and secluded spot.

  • We arrived a day late after Hurricane Dorian hit Nova Scotia. Jennifer was very understanding and accommodating. She communicated with me quickly and kept me apprised of the conditions. Many people were without power, including this cottage, when we arrived. Jennifer went out of her way to clear trees from the driveway before our arrival. Even without power, which was restored the next day, we loved the cottage. The views are just as beautiful as in the photos. The cottage is cozy and has everything needed for a comfortable stay. It is very private and yet close to a grocery store and hiking. Jennifer's kindness and efforts helped us be able to enjoy our trip. I highly recommend a stay at her cottage.

  • Melissa's cottage is a perfect little home for anyone visiting the Sydney area who doesn't want the downtown hotel experience. It was impeccably clean, nicely furnished and decorated and very comfortable! We especially loved being greeted by Melissa's beagle and having lovely horses grazing in the little pasture behind the cottage. It's a quiet, peaceful spot with easy access to Sydney and Sydney River where we attended Celtic Colours concerts and enjoyed a few great meals. We also took a day trip to Glace Bay for a nice lunch and enjoyable visits to the Coal Miner's Museum and the Heritage Museum. Both hosts were friendly and welcoming.

  • The view is incredible and the house is super clean. Easy 5 min drive to the Keltic lodge and even closer to convenience stores and NSLC. We felt very comfortable there and the beds were amazingly cozy!

    Becca2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin was very comfortable and spacious. The view from the living room and the deck was wonderful. Even though it is on Cabot Trail, it is at the bottom of a long driveway which helps it to be very quiet and private. We did not arrive until after dark after a long day of traveling and was very easy to find. Thank goodness for the very nice address numbers. The king bed was comfortable. The kitchen lacked basic amenities; there was no salt or pepper or aluminum foil which would have been nice when cooking. We traveled from the states and always know to buy our groceries in a larger town before we get on the road, but rarely buy these items since most Airbnb's have some. The kitchen could have been cleaned a little better but I am a clean freak! My husband thought the kitchen was fine! We did not meet Tom since we were only there for 2 nights but he always responded if we had a question. I am glad that there was no one staying in the basement because I am afraid they would have heard us walking around- especially the night we arrived.

  • The most gorgeous view that you can imagine, privacy, clean, spacious and a gorgeous deck, barbecue and dining area. The only thing we missed enjoying was jumping off the dock for a swim as it was too cold. Warm and friendly people with good tips for travel that were useful. Add a nice location to access other areas from. Wish we had more time and that was after 3 nights.

    Michael2019-10-11T00:00:00Z
  • This is honestly PARADISE! The house itself is charming... warm and comforting, easily big enough for two people. But it's outside that really shines. The house is right on a stunning lake, with a wooden dock and patio straight out of a fairy tale. We were there right as the autumn colors peaked, and every day was breathtaking. The house has basic amenities, but there's a corner store just up the road with a good selection of groceries (and very tasty pizza!). Plus you're right in the heart of Cape Breton, easy drive to so many stunning sights. We're already talking about staying here again in the future!!!

    Michelle2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage was so warm and inviting! It was just what we needed! We loved the outdoor space and that is where we spent the majority of our time. Alix thought of everything — we had planned to do some local sight-seeing and exploring, but were reluctant to leave the beautiful views of the Mira River!

    Leona2019-09-28T00:00:00Z
  • This paradise is just that!! The house was amazing and house and river decks were super comfy. River was peaceful and sunrises should not be missed !! Thank you Alix😃

  • This place was even more amazing than what you see in the pictures. We enjoyed every minute of our vacation, going for a kayak ride in the morning, coming back for lunch on that incredible deck and going for a hike in the afternoon/evening. Our dog who loves water also said it's her favourite place in the world ;)

  • The location was as amazing as I hoped it would be. Enjoying a morning coffee on the patio overlooking the water with the gorgeous fall leaves in the background was certainly a fantastic experience. It was pretty rainy the day we arrived, but it was nice to hunker down and keep dry in a space larger than a motel room.

  • Jennifer and Jans have a great spot in Englishtown. We enjoyed the stay and would recommend it to others. Lots of space for larger groups especially when using the guest house. The older home has been cared for well by Jennifer and Jans.

House is close to the airport (10.1km) & Dominion Beach Provincial park. Great ocean view and nice outdoor space in a quiet neighborhood. Our place is good for couples, solo adventurers, business travellers, and families (with kids). Large patio with fire pit and wood. Dining area seats 6 comfortably, with room & chairs for extra guests. Large upstairs family room. Both bedrooms have a single and double bed, one couch unfolds to a double bed. Bright modern kitchen & main floor laundry.
Eagles, hawks and fox are sometimes seen. Deer sometimes graze nearby. During lobster fishing season, boats are just offshore. We'll leave binoculars and a spotting scope for viewing boats and wildlife.
    Is on a no-through road.
  • Amazing. As always, the perfect location with a perfect view.

  • Amazing clean house and bill was very helpful to respond quick to a late night issue!

    Yun2019-11-18T00:00:00Z
  • Of the three places we stayed during our Celtic Colours tour, Bill’s place was my favourite. It is a beautiful home; super clean, comfortable and toasty warm (it got a bit chilly at night!). It’s location was central enough to easily travel to Louisburg, Sydney and Glacé Bay where our venues were. And when we were relaxing back at home we watched the cruise ships through the thoughtfully provided telescope, or the family of deer that would come by and graze in the front grass. When I had an admittedly stupid question, Bill texted me back immediately. I would definitely want to stay here again if I return to the area, and highly recommend it to others.

    Kimberley2019-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • We loved Bill’s place! Stunning ocean views, well furnished and very comfortable home, quick and easy responses. Thank you for your hospitality! We will be back!

  • Everything was perfect and we needed nothing! Beautiful spot

    Donna2019-10-04T00:00:00Z
  • My husband and I rented Bill's place to use on our wedding weekend. It was the perfect spot for getting ready the day of, with such amazing views! Bill's place was very spacious, clean and comfortable. I would for sure recommend this spot, especially for any brides and/or grooms looking to rent a place for the night before their wedding.

    Kate2019-09-30T00:00:00Z
  • This home is a treasure well worth discovering. From the breathtaking views to the comfortable beds and well appointed kitchen, everything you need is within your reach. The patio is a wonderful place to relax by the fire with a drink in hand. Or you can walk down to the ocean and pick cranberries. It will be a place you’ll always remember. We will be back next year!

The North Shore, originally settled by Scots in the early 1800s, is now home to lots of moose, a crab and lobster fishery (May - July), as well as many fine artisans and crafters. From the deck of the Sleeping Moose Cottage you might see whales and seals, for sure ocean birds, and 'our' Bald Eagle who does a 'fly-by' a couple of times a day. There are lots of hiking and snowshoeing trails in and outside the National Park, and if you like golf... Highland Links is a beautiful 25-minute drive away. • This cottage had full amenities and an incredible location. Right beside the ocean with an incredible view and a quick drive to national parks this place was perfect for my husband, my dogs, and I to have a perfect nature get away.

    Hailey2019-10-22T00:00:00Z
  • Great place to stay, was more than what we expected. The view is spectacular, we watched seals in the water, the beds and bedding are so cozy. Excellent place to stay. Fun to watch the chicken wonder around

    Allyson2019-10-04T00:00:00Z
  • Ton's place is in a great spot for exploring the Highlands Park. You can also walk 1 min to the shore and we saw a bunch of seals! The cabin has everything you need and is quiet...even with the cafe just up the hill. Great food there, BTW!

  • nice information!

    Shashank2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great stay @ the Sleeping Moose. The location is wonderful, we could even see the sea from the cottage. Our favorite place was the (private) picknick table behind the cottage, very close to the sea. Ton is a very hospitable and enthousiastic host... he also makes great Dutch ‘pannenkoeken’ (pancakes) in his restaurant the Dancing Moose. It is a perfect place for a few relaxing days, after driving and hiking the Cabot Trail. The cottage is clean and has everything you need: good equipped kitchen, nice bed(s), good shower and bathroom, and fast WiFi. We recommend everyone to go there; we loved it!

    Bente2019-07-19T00:00:00Z
  • Ton’s cottage was clean, comfortable, quiet, and private. The kitchen was well equipped, and we also took advantage of the great breakfast restaurant nearby. Ton was very friendly and met us upon arrival. He also shared some tips on nearby beaches. We enjoyed our stay, and the cabin was a great base for our explorations of the Cabot Trail.

    Eric2019-07-11T00:00:00Z
  • A great place to stay on the Trail. We loved the cottage, the location and the Dancing Moose Cafe. Ton was a great host, offering helpful suggestions of hikes and restaurants, and my family already wants to return and stay for longer next time!

  • My husband and I stayed for one night during our drive around the Cabot Trail. Sarabeth and Caitlyn have created a beautiful space. Make sure to have lunch in the cafe and ask about local hiking trails and spots to visit. We could have easily stayed longer and will do so the next time we visit Cape Breton.

    Fiona2019-10-22T00:00:00Z
  • This was the cutest spot to stay! Loved just walking downstairs into a cafe that was beautifully decorated. Will definitely stay again!

  • Wake up to aromas from the café below knowing there’s coffee and a delicious pastry waiting for you to start your day! Sarabeth & Caitlyn provide good old fashioned hospitality in a beautiful old renovated house. Bright & cheerful, full of original art, the creaky floors add to the ambience! This is our second stay and no doubt we’ll be back.

  • A brilliant place to stay when visiting the Cabot Trail. Located in the heart of Ingonish, it is just a short drive to restaurants, trails and stores. The design of the B&B is modern with endless unique and thoughtful touches, and the food & drink are beautifully prepared and absolutely delicious. We would highly recommend!

Our renovated 1910 farmhouse situated in the peaceful neighborhood of South Bar, about 10 minutes north of downtown Sydney, is sure to sooth the soul. Enjoy walks along the rocky beach, pick berries on the land or just unwind on the deck watching the sunset. The recently built lookout point at the water's edge provides views of Sydney harbor and North Sydney with sunsets that you won't soon forget. Just a 10-minute drive from downtown Sydney, this is a great home base to explore Cape Breton.
Renovated turn of the century Farm House in the picturesque community of South Bar in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia… The Farm House was originally built in 1910 and sits on over 7 acres of land stretching down to its own beach on Sydney Harbor. This property was in the same family since the 1700's when this area was first settled. The home was renovated in 2012, including a large Chef’s Kitchen with new appliances and large island. Layout: Main floor - large dining room, living room, kitchen, bathroom (with shower) and laundry room (with new laundry appliances). We have a flat screen TV in the living room and wireless high speed internet, we do not have Cable TV but have cables on site to hook up laptops and Ipads. There is also a DVD player and a music player with USB. The kitchen really steals the show with its large island and all the things you need to create culinary magic! In 2018 we built a deck off the back of the house with french doors leading into the dining room, the sunsets from this vantage point will not disappoint. Second floor - four bedrooms and large bathroom with huge soaker tub. There is one queen bed, two double beds and one bunk bed (sleeps 8 comfortably). The basement and attic are currently undeveloped and locked off. This home is conveniently located within 10/15 minutes of almost everything including the Airport, the University, Downtown Sydney and the Mall. It sits on a beautiful stretch of road that runs along the ocean front from Sydney to New Waterford. Our neighbors are very friendly and have lived in the area their whole lives, great people to talk to about the history of the area. You can walk along the rocky beach when the tide is out to the lobster pound to pick up fresh lobster off the boats for dinner (during Lobster season). Or spend time picking raspberries and blueberries on the land. This home is perfect for young families with children, older families who want to unplug, couples on a romantic getaway, bikers, events such as birthdays or reunions and professionals on work contracts. Kids can safely play in the meadows or walk down the path to the beach, picking berries along the way. It is a perfect base camp to discover Cape Breton. Cape Breton is rich with history and culture and provides endless opportunities to explore historic sites, listen to local musicians, eat local food, shop at the local farmer's market, tour the coal mines in beautiful Glace Bay or tour the Cabot Trail, one of the most beautiful places on earth! But the one thing that stands out over everything else when visiting the area are the people - they are truly some of the friendliest caring people you will meet, and they speak with a great accent all their own! In terms of things to do, this area provides endless opportunities... •Sydney's population is approximately 30,000, the area offers all the amenities.of any urban area, just a short drive away •The Highlands - Canada's highest ranking golf course, ranked number 8 in the world. •Fort Louisbourg - one of the oldest Forts in the Americas. •Cabot Trail - rated as one of the most scenic drives on planet earth!. •The village of Baddeck is about a 50 minute drive - it is a sailing mecca, with beautiful little shops, homes, cafes and music. •Alexander Graham Bell's home, his family still lives here. •Canada's only single malt scotch distillery. Glenora. •There is even a small ski hill about 25 minutes away, with a great golf course attached. •Cruise ships, the largest ones in the world, now dock in Sydney. •The ferry port to Newfoundland is right across from our property. •Many beautiful sandy beaches between 15mins and 1hr drive •PEI is only about a 5hr drive, as is New Brunswick. •The US is very accessible by plane or car. •There are some new vineyards and wineries that have opened in the last several years - the climate here is surprisingly mild and the land fertile •Lobsters, lots and lots of lobsters •Mountain biking, hiking, dirt biking, running, motorbiking tours, climbing, skidooing, camping, hunting, sailing, historical land marks, farming - culinary potential and even bingo! •The weekend Farmer's Market really highlights the local culture and is a great place to take kids •Local music is endless •There are some great new restaurants •And lots of festivals and live music This area is truly a hidden jewel and is welcoming for everyone; it is quickly becoming a travel destination as more and more people realize what Cape Breton has to offer, and at a fraction of the cost of some of the neighboring provinces.
South Bar is a small community on the ocean about 10 minutes drive from down town Sydney. There are no stores or services directly in South Bar, but everything is a 10 to 15 minute drive away.
  • The house is large, clean and comfortable. Rick and Nadine were very communicative and attentive to any needs. The kitchen was stocked with all of the utensils and pots/pans/knives, etc. we would stay here again in a heart beat!

    Ashley2019-10-16T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful tranquil spot outside of Sydney. Make sure you go down the the sea on your first day! The water is unbelievably clean - and warm! Very comfortable beds, and well equipped kitchen. This is a great place to reconnect with friends over meals and day trips. Loved every minute.

    Lucy2019-08-18T00:00:00Z
  • We spent a wonderful long weekend at Rick and Nadine's farmhouse. The views are spectacular, especially down the path to the shore where we spent a wonderful evening taking in the views. We were in town for a family reunion which took place a few doors down, so we didn't get to take advantage of the BBQ or fully equipped kitchen, but perhaps next trip!! We highly recommend the Farmhouse for anyone visiting the neighbourhood, or as a base for further explorations (Louisbourg, Baddeck or even the Trail if you've got your driving hats on).

    Ian2019-08-14T00:00:00Z
  • Highly recommend this cute farmhouse. Rick and Nadine were very responsive and super helpful.

    Nanette2019-08-10T00:00:00Z
  • it made for a great summer, being in this house.

    Mary2019-07-28T00:00:00Z
  • Although close to Sydney, the "Farm House' felt much more remote . It is a great place for an extended family with two bathrooms and four bedrooms. Our grandkids loved throwing rocks into the ocean after walking down the private path. Kitchen was fully equipped, and all appliances (dishwasher, washer/dryer, internet) worked as promised (although we did have to unplug and replug the router to reboot it to get internet to work.) We got quick responses to our questions from the hosts.

    Eleanor2019-07-14T00:00:00Z
  • Staying at Rick’s and Nadine’s was a wonderful. The farm house was much better than we expected and everything was easy to access. We recommend there place highly. Thank you.

    Gisele2019-07-04T00:00:00Z
  • This is a very comfortable place for a family stay and is just as advertised. The house is well appointed: lots of bedding, towels, kitchen supplies, and comfortable furniture and beds. Great views over the fields and water, and very private, notwithstanding the proximity of neighbours on one side. Oh, and we found the well water (at least we presumed it was from a well) really good—cold, no chemical taste and really refreshing. The beach made for pleasant walks and beach-glass collecting and the location is great for exploring Cape Breton in all directions. A family of foxes made regular appearances i the field in the mornings and evenings. Rick stayed in touch and was very helpful. Highly recommended.
