Places to stay in Bauline East
On the Sea. A wonderful cabin. It is comfortable and private, high cielings, one bedroom, bathroom, and full size sitting/breakfast/kitchen room with a long sofa. You are 500 feet from the wharf which is the hub of this outport. We are located conveniently on the Southern Shore, close enough to St. John's, Petty Harbour, Ferryland, Trepassy and even St. Vincent for day excursions. The CABIN is located next to the Barn, Bunky and Teepee on the property.
In the fotos it is the ORANGE CABIN. If this CABIN is not available for the dates you would like, please look at our COTTAGE, BARN, BUNKY, and TEEPEE on AIRBNB. All our properites are listed as East Coast Newfoundland Cottage and Cabins. Thanks. The cabin comforts are basic, the space wonderful. The surrounding area, absolutely beautiful. We also offer locally sourced food on site at extra cost. Located on the East Coast Trail, we are at the head of the trail to La Manche Park in Bauline East. From the house it is a 40 minute hike to the swinging bridge where the waterfalls is topped by one of our many swimming holes in the area. The East Coast Trail is 300km of spectacular trails. We have a pond across the street for swimming, rocky beach for bonfires and kayaking is also near by. There is also a tour boat that leaves from our harbour to view humpback whales while visiting the bird island reserves off the coast. Two rooms. One bedroom has Queen size bed, the other with sofa/bed that is also the living/dining room with an outside patio. All cotton sheet and down covers. The kitchen includes a dining table and all the amenities including toaster oven, refrigerator, microwave and outdoor shared BBQ with gas or coal (bring if you prefer!). This second room can be converted into a bedroom on request. The bathroom has a hot shower and there is another outdoor shower as well. There is WiFi and a smart TV with NetFlix. Bauline East is an outport settled about 150 years ago. Derived from the French word "baleine" meaning whale, Bauline East is a fishing village of twelve homes with all the seasonal activity of fishing and crabbing. This is an ideal space for people who enjoy rustic living, suited for artists or traveling adventurers, loungers (there is hammocks), hikers, whale watchers, bird spotters and music festival goers.. We are 50 minutes south of St. John's, approximately 380 miles north by northwest and 1,000 meters above the sunken Titanic, in a sheltered cove overlooking the Atlantic. NB: PRICE - If you are worried about the price being reasonable, please don't be, it goes with our idea that people should bring prices down rather than take them up. We could charge more, but we don't, we want to rent at a price which we would want to rent at but with the quality that we would also want. We do not go for this overprice motel mentality. (website hidden)
It is an outport community. There are only about 18 houses. People are friendly and the wharf is a working wharf so there is activity there most of the time, it gives you a sense of place.
  • My partner and I had a wonderful stay at George and Chabela's place. The cabin was adorable, stylish, and clean. Our stay felt peaceful like a camping trip but without any of the inconvenience. Highly recommend this Airbnb for anyone looking for something a bit off the beaten path outside St. John's.

  • George and Chabela's place is so special. I love going there. I've been taking my son there for a few years now and we've stayed in the teepee, the bunky and now the cabin. It's always a memorable experience. Their property is gorgeous, the beach is heaven, and their little spots to stay are put together with such care. Each spot, even the teepee, has everything you need. And George and Chabela are such kind, welcoming people. Don't miss this spot!

  • We had a wonderful nights stay here ( one adult , 2 kids....one who slept on the long sofa). Make sure you read the accurate description. This is not a HGTV tiny house but a cabin. It is quirky, charming and fun. It is not 5 star but it is quite wonderful. You would not be able to cook a Sunday dinner but the kitchen space is very functional for basics. The location next to the beach is great. There are other cabins/tents/bunkers close by - as described the listing. For us it added the charm, it felt like a little community but if you are looking for seclusion it's not for you. The hosts George and Chabela could not be more interested in your care while there. They are not in your face but you know there is help at hand if needed. The whole feel is artsy, laidback and welcoming. It was just what we needed.

  • This was my second stay at the cottage because my first experience was so fantastic I knew there was nowhere else I’d rather be. The location is super close to so many fascinating attractions, trails, and natural wonders that after 2 10-day visits I still have more to see. The cabin is comfy, cozy, and clean. George and Chabela are super helpful and accessible and helped me experience unique treats such as a boat tour with a local fisherman and attendance at a rescued puffin release! We even rescued a baby Puffin ourselves. I could go on and on. A gorgeous pebbly beach is just beyond the door. You will fall in love with the place and the little cabin, guaranteed! I am already planning my return.

  • We had the pleasure of staying here for 6 days and it was everything we had hoped for, and more. George and Chabela are wonderful, attentive hosts, and met our every need, often going above and beyond! George has a wealth of knowledge about the area and was readily available to provide us with tips and opinions on everything from local trails, restaurants and attractions. He even volunteered to drive us to a trail head so we could drop our car at the other end and do the full trail without having to backtrack. If you get a chance, get his neighbour Walter to take you out in his boat. For a mere $25 a person, he takes you up close to bird island, to the site of the former village of La Manche and teaches you how to jig for cod! He will also chase whales if there are any in the area. The cabin was perfect for us, rustic and comfy. Very clean and well-equipped and the few extras we asked for were readily provided. The only small issue for us was with the wifi. We found it very weak and inconsistent on all our devices (iphones and ipad). Also, be aware that the bathroom for the other accommodations on the property is on the back of this cabin, so sometimes there was extra noise in the night or early morning. Overall, this beautiful, quiet location was a perfect base for our adventures of the week and we couldn't have asked for a better place to stay, or better hosts. We would certainly recommend it to anyone!

  • George and Chabela’s property is a magical place. Steps from the ocean & hiking trails it was the perfect destination to take in the Newfoundland sea air. The cabin itself was super charming and cozy, with wonderful touches and a most comfortable bed. George and Chabela are the perfect hosts, full of generosity and warmth. Would go back in a heart beat.

  • This listing is a gem! A short drive away from St John's, with interesting and beautiful stops along the way. Right on the ocean with a beautiful cliffside view. The space was very comfortable, rustic and unique - we just loved it. Not super close to anything, but a quick drive away from some restaurants and sights, but you should really just relax and enjoy the outdoors. George and Chabela were so kind, helped us with our trip and created a wonderful, inviting space. There is everything you could need and you will be very happy there. Highly recommend!

    Savannah2019-08-04T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great stay in George and Chabela’s little orange cabin. It’s a magical spot, calm and relaxing - with lots to do in the area. The cabin was well-equipped with all we needed, and George and Chabela were amazingly kind and helpful, with lots of suggestions on places to go and things to do. We hope to return for a longer stay!

  • Had an amazing stay, we had to stay an extra two nights because of a snowstorm and Amanda was very accommodating and helpful.

  • Great stay!

    Thomas2020-01-04T00:00:00Z
  • The place is excellent. Stylish and has all the amenities one would need for a few days stay. Thoughtfully designed place. The jacuzzi is very useful and easy to use. The view from the jacuzzi deck is amazing. Amanda was a wonderful host and took care of everything. I visited in December and the snow plowing was taken care of as well. NLC and Foodland are within 5 mins driving distance. But not a lot of options to eat out.

On the Sea. A cozy bunky with double bed .. a large window and glass door looking at our cliffside with a private little porch. Off the porch is a sink with running water, but as part of the compound all amenities are available incl full washroom. We are located conveniently on the Southern Shore, close enough to St. John's, Petty Harbour, Ferryland, Trepassy and even St. Vincent for day excursions. The BUNKY is located next to the Cabin, Barn and Teepee on the property.
A Bunky with good taste is something hard to find. Really minimal accomodation, but a roof over your head and a shared bathroom. The two person bed, is comfortable.
Our neighborhood is a hamlet, with 15 houses in it, all lived in by full time residents. We are on a beach, but protected by a cliff, walk around the cliff and voila - the beach and harbour and a wharf and a stream. Walk around the other corner and you will find a swimming lake (called pond in Newfoundland). A few sunny days and pond is warm.
  • Lovely spot, great little place to get away, had many sweet little touches and was very homely

    Danny2019-09-22T00:00:00Z

  • We had a wonderful stay in the Barn! Before arriving, George let us know that we were being placed in the Barn which provided more space than the bunky we originally booked. We had a wonderful time here - able to cook our own meals on the hot plate and toaster oven and in perfect proximity to some great hikes on the east coast trail. George and Chabela provided us with helpful tips on great local stops. We ended up purchasing a book and some art at the local printing press in Tors Cove. We highly recommend George and Chabela’s Bauline East AirBnB’s! Such a wonderful end to our time in Newfoundland!

  • Bunky 4 lyfe. Best bed ever. Makes me wonder why the heck I live in the city.

    Sarah2019-09-03T00:00:00Z
  • Great, little space. Just enough for getaway from the hustle and bustle. Great hosts, very friendly. Nice, short walk to the beach!

    Timothy2019-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • Very special place. George and Chabela couldn’t have been more accommodating. Were nice enough to not only share their beautiful property situated right at the water but also their kind words and delicious locally sourced cod we cooked up that evening. Only wished we stayed longer. We will definitely be back and I recommend to any one staying here to check out the hikes near by in La Manche. Big love from Hilary and I!

    John Tanner2019-08-24T00:00:00Z
  • This is “heaven on earth”. I highly recommend everybody a stay at this great place and enjoy the warm-hearted hosts.

    Alessandro2019-08-08T00:00:00Z
  • Thank you to George and Chabela who were so welcoming and full of plenty of suggestions for the area. They were offering of amenities when we needed them and treated us as friends as soon as we arrived. The place they have is unique and unlike any other Airbnb I have stayed at. We quickly made friends with the travellers in the other cabins and the locals. We enjoyed the quiet rustic cabins in a small town which made it feel like the true Newfoundland experience!

The Barn is not your classic big farm barn, this is a Newfoundland barn, enough to keep supplies a cow and hay for the winter. Today it is a liveable breathing space. When the wind blow, it blows a bit, so no surprises. Adventurers will like it! We are located conveniently on the Southern Shore, close enough to St. John's, Petty Harbour, Ferryland, Trepassy and even St. Vincent for day excursions. The Barn is next to the Cabin, the Bunky and the TEepee, all listed on Airbnb.
This shed is about as old and simple as any barn can be. Originally the barn of the house, it has been converted into a livable space, with some creature comforts - heater, bed, running water, outside washroom, hot plate, sofa, table and mosquito net. This space is more like camping with a solid roof, than having a purpose built cabin. So if the wind blows through it do not be surprised, it is fun and comfortable though, but can be cold and hot depending on weather. The barn has running water and rudimentary items for preparing a meal, we have coffee, tea, sugar, noodles and other basic kitchen items in the kitchen. A full washroom is located in the back of the adjacent Cabin. BBQ is accessible anytime - supplied with coals and started fluid. We interact with our guests only as much as they like. If we are around then we do the meet and greet on arrival, and we are around the compound a lot working on things. Bauline is what is called an "outport". Today we are about 1 hour from St. John's, the original settlement would have have been more than a day's horse ride from there. We are really at the end of the road, from our harbour you can go out to sea, or you go back to where you came from, or you can up into La Manche Park (hiking). Please in our neighborhood, still fish when they can, cut their own wood, some grow food, others go away to work in the oil projects, others are local carpenters. It is a colorful neighborhood. There is no public transport available. We can help if the circumstances are dire. Car rental is limited and expensive in Newfoundland so be ready for that. We do have one shoresman who drives up and down the shore once a day and can give lifts, but your day has be planned around his schedule. There is really no food shopping around here. The closest convenience store is 7 km, down the road and the closest supermarket is 20 km down the road, and the closest REAL market is about 35 km. All that is outlined in a package we send you before you come.
Bauline is an old outport. People are really friendly and curious about CFAs (come from away). It is a really nice harbour at the end of a road. Next stop is a hike to La Manche Park. There is a pond to swim in, a beach to have bonfires or walk, explore, trails everywhere. Close enough to St. John's but far enough away that it is still a throwback with genuine people.
  • An amazing spot to stay! Check in was easy and the hosts are so nice. The barn had thoughtful touches and was the perfect little spot for a nice get away. A lot of nice hiking trails around the area as well. We will definitely be back!!

  • Such a special place, perfect location for hiking , beach and watching the sea! Wonderful and kind hosts who know the area well. Thank you George and Chabela! Look forward to returning !

  • Great space, great hosts and the proximity to Lamanche and other sites including the beautiful Bauline East area is an awesome bonus.

    Jason2019-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent little place for a night away! George and Chabela are fabulous hosts, super friendly! We stayed in the “barn”, which was perfect for us and our little Lab puppy. Everything that we needed was provided in the space. There is a bbq on site. The Lamanche East Coast Trail is minutes away from the site. Wonderful place 🙂

    Jenna2019-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • George and chabela are delightful hosts. We love staying in the barn, fresh and comfy.

The Whale Watcher House is uniquely positioned on the edge of the Atlantic. Guests' reviews indicate that no other accommodation offered them quite the same authentic Newfoundland experience. The Gannet is one of 3 apartment options located within the Whale House. It is our most economical venue, yet you will find it has everything you need for your holiday - while enjoying your location on the edge of the Atlantic!
The Gannet is a studio apartment with a bedroom, kitchen and sitting area - complemented by a deck to the exterior. The inside has everything you need for a comfortable stay: the bed is queen-sized; the bathroom offers an over-sized shower; the kitchen, tho' small, is fully functional with convection burner and microwave, fridge, coffee machine, toaster, etc. Outside - you have the best views the coast of Newfoundland has to offer. Relax on your own deck. When the recreational fishery is on - Jerry-next-door will take you out on the water and let you jig your own cod! There's even a BBQ on your private deck for cooking that fresh fish you just caught!
St. Michael's is one of three communities that really blur into each other - you start in Burnt Cove...then St. Michael's, and then Bauline East...we have the Church - hence the name! Walk out the door and turn left or right and you are on the East Coast Hiking Trail. A lovely 15-minute stroll and you are at Bauline East’s little harbour where you can launch a kayak, maybe get a run out for a morning of cod-jigging…or just sit on the dock blissfully on vacation. There is plenty to occupy your time. Daily excursions could include: Whale watching with any of the operators in Bay Bulls – 20 minutes away. Kayaking – either in Cape Broyle, Bay Bulls or Witless Bay. Day trip to Ferryland and the archeological dig there from the 17th century. Day trip to Mistaken Point – our newest UNESCO treasure and the site of the oldest fossils on the planet. I recommend you book a tour - as this is our newest "oldest" asset, and it is very, very busy. Continue on to Cape Race and tour the lighthouse which first heard to CQD from the Titanic. Stay home – sit on the deck and chill....or whale spot in the waters in one of the many viewing areas on the property.. Spend the day in the capital city – 35 minutes away – then return home to wrap yourself in a blanket and watch the stars from your deck. Hike 'til you drop – up to LaManche, or over to Bay Bulls, or up to the Spout, or down to Cappahayden, trails galore.
  • Levine's Airbnb was a wonderful place t stay. The rooms were warm and inviting and kitchen allowed for preparation of simple meals. The accommodation was spotless and the view from the property was worth it'sweight in gold!

  • Elaine is not exaggerating when she says "fantastic views"! We were awestruck by the location, and also the interior design and thoughtful touches. Can't go wrong with this one!

  • Excetional scenery The whales and puffins at your feet

    Carl2019-08-08T00:00:00Z
  • I highly recommend Elaine's place. Stunning beauty, amazing hospitality. Very clean space. Thoughtful suggestions for local dining.

    Jordan2019-07-19T00:00:00Z
  • Elaine is a great host, she made sure that we knew all that there is to do in the area. Check in was easy and the room was clean and cozy. We enjoyed using the grill. We stayed in the Gannet room, I would probably say stay in one of the others for a better view (the view from the house is amazing!) but would stay in that room again if that was all that was available.

    Sunny2019-07-16T00:00:00Z
  • Elaine’s place was beautiful. We ended up upgrading to the “loon” apartment since it was available. The view from the deck of the loon was unbeatable, and we spent much of the time in the apartment on the deck watching for puffins and whales. We would happily return! Thanks Elaine!

    Kathryn2019-06-27T00:00:00Z
  • An incredible cliff side location with a great view of the sea and local islands. Woke up to the sounds of seabirds; felt very close to nature. Elaine is a marvelous hostess who made us felt completely at home.

  • Our stay at Elaine’s was perfect! We had originally only booked one night but once we arrived and saw how beautiful it was, we booked a second night! Elaine was a great host, very nice and accommodating. We would not hesitate to stay with her again if we ever come back to the area! Definitely recommend!

This is a newly renovated LOWER unit of a two-unit house, that sits right upon the shoreline. Watch the whales and the ocean activities right form the back yard! We generally only book this unit when the above unit is vacant and vice versa to avoid any noise level issues. Also available is an above two bedroom unit. Check out "whale watchers paradise"
This property has one of the best oceanfront locations in the community. You can sit in the back yard and see the whales jump right before your eyes during peak seasons
This is a popular tourist destination for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. There is a local bakery two doors down and the LaManche East Coast Trail is just minutes away! Other local tourism interests/places are Mistaken Point and the Ferryland Lighthouse Picnic.
  • I would recommend this place to anyone who enjoys a spectacular view with the amazing opportunity to see whales just steps from where you lay your head.

Experience tells me that even on the worst of days, pouring rain, or thick mist, you won't want to leave this apartment! The views are second to none in this part of the province. Your deck literally overhangs the ocean. Picture morning yoga with a puffin looking on! Or waking up to the sounds of a humpback's exhale! Coffee has never tasted better. Whether your particular season brings whales, icebergs, or birds . . . you have found it - all a short commute from St. John's.
The Loon Apartment Although there is a tendency to say that this apartment is all about that view - it isn't. This is comfortable, charming, and cozy living space - it just happens to also have the best views ever...or did I already say that! The apartment features a private bedroom with queen bed and full bathroom with shower; a living/dining/kitchen area with a pull-out sofa bed; a stylish, functional half kitchen with microwave oven, induction burner, coffee machine, toaster, kettle, sink, small fridge, etc. The drop-leaf table accommodates 2- 4 persons; and of course, you also have a private deck (with BBQ) with those jaw dropping views of the ocean and the islands in the Reserve.
Kayaking – rent a shell in either in Cape Broyle, Bay Bulls or Witless Bay. Or put your own int he water in many locations quite near the house. Day trip to Ferryland and the archeological dig there from the 17th century. Day trip to Mistaken Point – our newest UNESCO treasure and the site of the oldest fossils on the planet. You will want to consider actually pre-booking a tour at Mistaken Point - it is new...and very , very busy. Continue to Cape Race and tour the lighthouse which first heard to QCD from the Titanic. Stay home – sit on the deck – whale spot in the waters just below your deck. Spend the day in the capital city – 35 minutes away – then return home to wrap yourself in a blanket and watch the stars from your deck. Hike til you drop – up to LaManche, or over to Bay Bulls, or up to the Spout, or down to Cappahayden - trails galore.
  • This place offers an outstanding impression of the coast of Newfoundland. Not far from St. John’s and on the Irish Loop drive. It’s clean and the deck view is so worth it. I highly recommend.

  • Elaine was lovely, as was her space. Definitely has one of the best spots along the coast. Wish I could rent it for a whole summer sometime!

    Morgan2019-09-25T00:00:00Z
  • I can’t say enough about this place! There were so many neat surprises, like seeing the sheep on the island. You can literally wake up and watch the sunrise from your bed and listen to the waves on the shore below you. The trails, which were not far, were spectacular. I recommend Mickleleens Path and it’s stunning views and La Manche which had a very interesting history that you walk past. If you want to get out in nature, it’s a wonderful place, but you can also easily get caught up on your news or stay in touch with FibreOp and fast WiFi. We definitely want to go back, we weren’t ready to leave.

A little 2 story cottage, nestled behind ancient rocks towering in the front yard. Blackberry and black current bushes surround the old timey house. You'll discover a 200 year old dining hutch built into the corner of the cottage, the hutch was salvaged from a ship wreck in the 1800's. A very cozy overall feeling to every corner of this classic but modern little cottage.
On the left side of Rock Cottage is the perfect swimming pond, fishing, canoeing, and tons of summer fun is had at Bauline pond every summer. On the right side is the breathtaking Atlantic ocean. Only a minute walk to a very private and untouched beach. Icebergs, whales, birds, wonders of nature right at your doorstep. The east coast trail is only a 5 minute walk from Rock Cottage, bringing you all along the rugged shoreline, passing the La Manche suspension bridge along your way, another hidden gem is the freshwater pond with a water fall that's hidden in behind the bridge. Many unique wonders all within a few short minutes from Rock Cottage. Front patio features a BBQ and some comfortable patio furniture.
  • Wonderful housing for one of our final days.

  • We had an awesome time. This air B&B comes with an excellent recommendation. The location is one of its finest points. It is close to some of the most beautiful scenery in Newfoundland. It is also close to whale and puffin watching cruises and the beautiful Ferryland light house!

  • The Rock Cottage is fantastic! Everything we needed was available! The bed was super comfy! I enjoyed making homemade soup in the kitchen and relaxing on the deck afterwards. The area is absolutely stunning! We were in awe of the entire experience. The cottage is close to many things you will want to see and experience!

On the Sea. A wonderful cottage in a great small outport 50 minutes from St. John's. You will feel a sense of community with the wharf 500 feet away. The house is not luxurious, rather we would call it fun, comfortable and rustic. We are located conveniently on the Southern Shore, close enough to St. John's, Petty Harbour, Ferryland, Trepassy and even St. Vincent for day excursions. The TEEPEE is located next to the CABIN, BUNKY and BARN on the property.
A nice authentic saltbox house on the East Coast Trail in the outport of Bauline East. We are on the water. If this COTTAGE is not available for the dates you would like please look at our CABIN, BARN and BUNKY on AirBnB. It is listed as East Coast Trail CABIN by the Sea.... We also have out-places to sleep as long as they are used by people in the same party who will share a bathroom and kitchen (extra charge per person) - Please ask. Thanks. All the amenities of a home except NO CABLE TV, but has DVD/BLURAY/NETFLIX and WiFi INTERNET in house. The house is part of a mini compound. Across the street from a large pond, on a creek with ocean out front. The lake across the street is where we go swimming. From our local wharf there is whale watching tours that also tour the bird island reserves off the coast. Bauline is the road's end where the head of the trail leads into La Manche Provincial Park. Can do bonfires on the beach. Kayaking also available. 2 Bedrooms with full size beds plus one sleeping area in Living Room. All cotton sheet and down covers. One full bathroom. Large porch around ocean side of house with hammocks (pending weather). Outdoor shower for fun on hot days. Full kitchen with all the amenities - electric stove. Heat both electric and furnace. Comfortable for hikers, loungers, and sports people. Rustically fun and comfortable. Not suitable to the Best Western crowd. Bauline East is an outport settled about 150 years ago. Very few outsiders here. A fishing village with all the seasonal activity. Whales and bird islands off shore. Restaurants within 15 minutes. Ferryland down the coast. Cape Race, the last piece of land from where the Titanic sank is 200 miles. If you insist on a doorman we can get one for you expect a very large charge. 50 minutes from St. John's and 25 minutes from Ferryland. PRICE: If you are worried about the reasonable price, don't be we are of the mentality of offering something nice for reasonable price. We do not subscribe to the overpriced motel mentality. (URL HIDDEN)
It is an outport community. There are only about 18 houses. People are friendly and the wharf is a working wharf so there is activity there most of the time, it gives you a sense of place.

Our 2 bedroom, one bathroom cottage is equipped with all the kitchen amenities you will ever need. If we don't have it, we will get it for you since we are just holler away, next door. You can sit at the kitchen table or relax on the couch and enjoy scenic Tors Cove Pond. Step through the patio doors off the kitchen and further enjoy the scenery on our deck that is equipped with seating and a BBQ.
Driftwood Cottage, located about 1/2 hour drive from St. John's on the Irish Loop, is beautiful little cottage nestled in the trees overlooking Tors Cove Pond, Tors Cove. We (Tanya and Jim Murphy) offer a clean, bright cottage with 2 bedrooms, kitchen, living room and full bath. Our drinking water is the best there is around as it comes from an artesian well that is over 150 ft deep. You can sit inside by the glowing wood stove and admire the local art, play some board games or read a book from our variety of NL authors. If you like the outdoors, visitors can sit around the fire pit, enjoy lounging on their own private beach and floating dock or take a dip in the pond. At no extra charge, visitors can also enjoy a single and double kayak, lifejackets, a variety of floats, paddle board, hammock and peddle bikes. -
Across the road, you can find local, fresh eggs. In a 10 minute walk, you can reach the ocean and the East Coast Trail. Within 15 minute drive you can access restaurants, coffee shops, supermarket, puffin and whale boat tours and craft shops. Within a 1/2 hr drive south to Ferryland, you can explore the Colony of Avalon's Archaeological Dig ( where I just happened to work for several years unearthing artifacts), explore the foundations of Lord Baltimore's Mansion House ( which just happens to be next to my family house , where my mom still lives) or enjoy a picnic at Historic Ferryland Lighthouse ( where my father just happened to be the lighthouse keeper in the 70's and 80's).A short 40 minute drive south of Ferryland is the Mistaken Point UNESCO World Heritage site featuring the oldest fossils of multi cellular life forms on earth. A pretty cool area!!! Tanya Murphy

I mentioned that it was my wife's birthday and Catherine had balloons set up and a birthday banner and cakes in the fridge for us, with candles to boot, so sweet! She also accommodated an early check in and late check out for us. The view is absolutely spectacular and the house has everything you will need. We can't wait to come back and stay again, what a spot!!

We would love to return someday.

  • “Crows nest” has an amazing view, romantic and very quite. Perfect for a relaxing getaway, Amanda was a great host.

    Brian2019-08-18T00:00:00Z
  • Tors Cove was beautiful and Amanda a very attentive host. She has this property as well as the Whale House guest houses therefore the terrace area with fire pit/barbecue is shared, great for meeting other travellers. The property we stayed in has the most amazing views; at the right time of year we could have seen whales and you can see the stars from your bed too. The kitchen/dining/main lounge area is shared with Amanda and her family but we barely saw them. A very classy apt and lounge area with interesting sculptures/art work. Although designed for 2 people, Amanda put 2 single mattresses down so our 2 boys could stay with us which worked very well.

    Samantha2019-08-08T00:00:00Z
  • This place is AMAZING--luxurious, but not overwhelming or ostentatious. There's an entrance to the beautiful yard from the East Coast Trail and labeled parking spaces for those who drive in. The host is so friendly, and the Crow's Nest is world class! Being walking distance from Fork Restaurant takes the cake!

    Jess2019-08-05T00:00:00Z
  • This is indeed a very special place! The room is just perfect. Amanda is very nice and helpful. There are lots of very nice places to visit in the surroundings.

    Juan Carlos2019-08-02T00:00:00Z
  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Amanda’a place. It was clean, open, and airy in our private room. In the evening we were able to watch whales, seabirds (puffins!), and dolphins from our patio while enjoy supper. Amanda also left Newfoundland favorites such as birch beer and pineapple crush sodas in our mini fridge which was greatly appreciated. We would stay here again when travelling! On a side note- if you plan on eating out or doing any boat tours/hiking while in the area, Amanda and her partner were able to provide recommendations and even went as far as to book out places on the Molly Bawn Whale Watching tour (which I also HIGHLY recommend!).

  • Mara's cottage is clean, spacious and well appointed! The views are amazing—what a pleasure to wake up and see the sparkling ocean as you drink your coffee. Location is great. We hiked the LaManche Village trail one day and took a whale watching boat trip to Witless Bay Reserve the next day.

  • Like others have said, the pictures do not do this place justice -- it is a beautiful and comfortable home with stunning views. Mara and Barb thought of everything we might need during our stay and were readily available to answer any questions we had, and make suggestions for places to visit during our stay. We loved exploring the area but also had a great time relaxing in the house and taking in the surroundings -- one night during dinner I even saw a Minke whale! I only wish we could have stayed longer.

We very much enjoyed our time in the area, largely due to our great accomodations. I highly recommend it. In addition, the owner/ team was very helpful and friendly during reservation, check in and our stay. Thank you for making our trip great!

  • We had a wonderful stay in the Chalet. Lots of room for the three of us. Tthe beds were comfortable. The kitchen was well equipped and the view is to die for. We were greeted with whales everyday during our stay right in front of the window Mara was kind enough to invite us to her deck to watch the whales even closer than we could see from the Chalet. Check in was simple and smooth. Barb made us feel welcome and even managed to find us an eagle figure we were searching for Thanks Barb and Mara

Charming is the best word to describe the Puffin Apt. The ocean is literally at your feet! The deck is spacious and overhangs the rocky shore. The Apartment is cozy, somewhat chic, and very comfortable. It offers everything you will need except of course your food. Many of the staples - salt, pepper, oil, vinegar, spices, etc. are already there. The apartment has a private bedroom with its own washroom, a living room with pull out bed, with a full kitchen with walk out deck to the ocean.
The Puffin Apartment (formerly Bay Bulls Suite) is one of three vacation rentals in the Whale Watcher House. On Air BnB you will find them listed as the Loon, the Gannet.... and of course this one - the Puffin. The Puffin is a one bedroom apartment with full kitchen, living room/dining area, a sofa bed that sleeps 2 in living room area, and a deck overlooking the ocean - with a BBQ. The Puffin can be paired with the Gannet to create a two bedroom, two full bathroom option. Perfect for larger families...or for two couples travelling together, and looking for more privacy than a sofa bed affords. Remember to check the availability of the adjoining second bedroom and bathroom - ie. the Gannet. The kitchen in the Puffin has four major, full-sized appliances - there is a BBQ on your deck. A drop-leaf table provides dining seating for 2-4 persons. And did we mention the views...from your own deck - it is right on the ocean - and the views are jaw dropping! There is more to the Whale Watcher House. As a guest you may access all of the exterior of the property - and everywhere is the ocean. So bring your suitcase, and leave the rest of it to us.
We are dramatically situated right on the ocean - with the islands in the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve as our view! Which means of course that you will want to just sit all day and observe. However - there is much to keep you amused - walk out the door and turn left or right and you are already on the East Coast Hiking Trail. turn left and it is a lovely 15-minute stroll and you are at Bauline East’s little harbour where you can launch a kayak, maybe get a run out for a morning of cod-jigging…or just sit on the dock blissfully on vacation. Continue on and you will come to the pretty locations of Doctor's Cove and La Manche. Turn right from my driveway, and you head along the community road and then the ocean to the lovely town of Tors Cove - plan to take in the Cribbies - or Marnies' Running the Goat press and bookstore...take in the abandoned Tors Cove church... There is plenty to occupy your time. Daily excursions could include: Whale watching with any of the operators in Bay Bulls – 20 minutes away. Kayaking – Bay Bulls or Witless Bay. Day trip to Ferryland and the archeological dig there from the 17th century. Don't miss the walk out to Ferryland Lighthouse...perhaps you will see whales off shore. Day trip to Mistaken Point – our newest UNESCO treasure and the site of the oldest fossils on the planet. You likely will need to book your tour into Mistaken Point - very, very new and very busy now! and they only do one tour of 24 a day. And it is well worth it. Hike til you drop – up to LaManche, or over to Bay Bulls, or up to the Spout, or down to Cappahayden, trails galore.

  • What an amazing space and location! A must!

    Teresa2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • We had an amazing stay at The Whale House. The views are outstanding! The night sky is so clear, watching the stars while relaxing in the hot tub is a perfect way to enjoy this serene getaway! The place was sparkling clean. The bed was very comfortable, and we thoroughly enjoyed the art work on display. Check in instructions were highly detailed and easy to follow. Communication with Amanda was excellent, she’s incredibly responsive. There are sweet touches to make you feel welcomed; robes, chocolates, tea and coffee, beverages. So much love and effort has been put into making this space a relaxing retreat for guests. The whale house was a perfect escape from our city home, and we cannot wait to return!

    Jessica2019-11-25T00:00:00Z
  • We absolutely loved our stay at the Whale House. Gorgeous view, comfortable and classy open-concept space, and everything we could have hoped for to make our stay-cation a time we won’t forget. Thank you Amanda for accommodating us and creating this perfect roundabay getaway.

    Jackson2019-11-15T00:00:00Z
  • Amanda's place is lovely and is in an amazing location. It's a great place for a little getaway - especially if you like great views and whales!

  • Beautiful accommodation and location. We had a great time. We went for a hike and had delicious food at The Fork near by. The room was spacious and comfortable. Cute touches and a very thoughtful and helpful host.

    Joanna2019-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • Dedication, respect and devotion to providing excellent hospitality services and the environment can co-exist . Amanda and Whale House are a good example - She took good care of us and does the same for the beautiful surrounding Witness Bay- My first comment when we got there and saw our “penthouse” room - was why go anywhere else when you have this view and things to do on the premises - Being to see the stars and Milky Way at night from the bed is a top amenity....****++++**

    Jane2019-07-28T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay here was amazing. The space was very clean and well-equipped. The view was unbelievable and we got a lot of use out of the hot tub. Amanda was extremely available and helpful. I would definitely recommend this place to others!

    Tors Cove, NL, Canada

Brand new, beautiful lighthouse-style home in Tors Cove, NL, sitting on over 2 acres of private land. Only 30 mins outside of St. John's! The home's design was modelled after a lighthouse in Nova Scotia, with design elements incorporated to really showcase the surrounding ocean views. You'll be sure to see plenty of wildlife around the lighthouse, and even some whales and icebergs if you're lucky!
The lighthouse is a brand new home with everything you will need during your stay. It has 3 private bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, a living room, a full kitchen and of course the top loft. It also has a lower deck, but we doubt you'll be spending much time there, as the view from the upper deck is unbeatable! The horizon spans from Bay Bulls all the way to Cape Broyle, which includes 6 small islands off the coast. Excellent for anyone who enjoys scenery and wildlife, or anyone who enjoys storm watching! With only a 30 minute drive to St. John's, the lighthouse is the perfect location for anyone who wants to experience both the urban feel of downtown, and the more relaxing feel of country living. Also a great weekend getaway for locals!
Located in the community of Tors Cove, on the Southern Shore of Newfoundland, which has a rich fishing history and beautiful scenery. The house is located just minutes from the East Coast Trail and multiple whale & puffin boat tours. The Southern Shore also boasts more tourist attractions including the Ferryland Lighthouse Picnic, La Manche Provincial Park, the Colony of Avalon archaeological site, and many local shops and resturaunts!
  • A great place to stay. The house was spotless and the view from it is spectacular. Brian was the most helpful host, giving lots of tips for the local area. We've already recommended staying here to all our friends.

    Samantha2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • This house was beautiful and spotless! Plenty of room for our group of 6. The 3rd floor lighthouse room was a great spot for the kids to play and have their own space. The location is amazing— with views way out into the ocean. A 5min walk down to the picture-perfect Cribbies where you can explore the beach. Right next to the East Coast Trail— we took an amazing hike to Tinker’s Point. Brian was so welcoming too! We loved the house— hope to come back some day!

    Robyn2019-08-29T00:00:00Z
  • What a view! Wow this place blew us away. The house is quite new, very clean and tidy. Located right in Tors cove with the most incredible views! The host was so friendly, came up for a quick chat when we first got there. Lots of local info was left for us... what to see, do, and eat! This incredibly unique home is exactly what airbnb is all about.... spending the night in a lighthouse?! Awesome!

    Kelly2019-08-09T00:00:00Z
  • It’s a beautiful location with lovely and thoughtful personal touches. The house was exceptionally well equipped and extremely clean. The hosts were incredibly courteous and responsive. We couldn’t have asked for more.

    Jeff2019-08-06T00:00:00Z
  • What a great view! And the hosts were amazing! Quick to respond and even brought fresh buns on arrival! It was much appreciated after a long day! Can’t say enough good things! Definitely a relaxing atmosphere and we felt right at home!

    Patricia2019-08-02T00:00:00Z
  • Such a beautiful home that has a breathtaking view all around. This place has everything you need to enjoy God’s beautiful creations. Both Brian and Hannah were spectacular and really goes out if the way to make you feel welcomed and at home! We have wonderful memories and have them to thank for sharing with us. So amazed with the location and the hospitality!

    Tina2019-07-17T00:00:00Z
  • Our family spent an outstanding week at the Cribbie Lighthouse. Brian and Hannah are great hosts. Upon arrival we were greeted with a bottle of local wine and homemade cookies. Brian is a lobsterman and he and Hannah stopped by one evening with three lobsters caught only hours before in the waters of Tors Cove. They also went out of their way to schedule a private boat tour for us with Hannah's brother-in-law. The home itself is brand new and spotless. It provides a fantastic view of Tors Cove, and we saw whales every day. The East Coast Trail is just steps away. There are many things to do within a short drive, and St. Johns is only about 35 minutes away. Highly recommended!!

    Eric2019-07-11T00:00:00Z
  • Look no further. This is the place to stay. It is beautiful, clean, brand new, spacious, and in a great location. Steps from the East Coast Trail. Wonderful views, even in the fog! Brian and Hannah met us when we arrived. They are super nice and very knowledgeable about the area and its history.

Bauline is an "outport". We are really at the end of the road, on the beach or you can hike into La Manche Park. People in our neighborhood, still fish when they can, cut their own wood, some grow food, others go away to work, others are local carpenters. It is a colorful neighborhood. We are located conveniently on the Southern Shore, close enough to St. John's, Petty Harbour, Ferryland, Trepassy and even St. Vincent for day excursions. The sibley TENT is next to the CABIN, BUNKY + BARN
On the Sea. Our Camp includes three cabins (BUNKY, BARN and CABIN, a main house, and the TENT. In Newfoundland it is possible to glamcamp. Very rustic and fun. Our Camp has fireplaces, BBQ, communal tables and shared bathroom. Come visit. The sibley TENT is glamcamping camping.. The canvas warms the space really nicely at night and during the day the vents keep a breeze flowing. We have outfitted the space with a wood floor, twin bed with bedding, mats, night table, lantern, some chairs and a propane heater. Of course the best time to use the TENT is during good weather, however in Newfoundland that is totally unpredictable. The TENT is 100% dry inside, the OUTHAUSE is as well, so expect to camp and enjoy the experience.
  • One of my most favourite summer escapes from St. John's. I love staying out at George and Chabela's!

    Sarah2019-09-07T00:00:00Z
  • George and Chabela’s teepee was a great experience! It was so relaxing listening to the waves crash against the beach while laying in bed. George and Chabela are very friendly, easy going people who go out of their way to make you feel right at home! Everything you need is on location and hiking trails are only a few feet away!

    Jill2019-08-04T00:00:00Z
  • I had an incredible time here. Location is right on the beach, each place they have is comfortable and adorable. Coffee, tea, and seats outside, everything you need for a wonderful morning. And their hospitality is above all else. They are such wonderful hosts and people. I will always recommend their place. I think anyone would have a wonderful time here!

    Sarah2019-07-12T00:00:00Z
  • The bunky is a fabulously unique option for the unpretentious adventure seeker. George & Chabela’s property is in a spectacular location and there is nothing better than ending the day with a fire on the beach. Highly recommend a stay here.

    Allison2019-07-07T00:00:00Z
  • A very cute and relaxing getaway. Although it's somewhat rustic, the hospitality was great and they provided everything you need for a cozy stay. Setting is beautiful and if you love nature, you will love it here.

  • Amazing experience. George and Chabela were in constant contact which was so helpful. The Tee Pee was so cool and a great night sleep. We arrived late and George built our fire while we settled in. We had a great fire on the beach and the tee pee was perfect for sleeping. They provided us with coffee and muffins in the morning which was thoughtful. I definitely recommend the outside shower!! Such a great touch. Can’t wait to go back again!! Thank you!!

Relax and enjoy the beauty and charm of life in the country. You are just 40 minutes from St. John's for day trips but far enough away to enjoy the serenity of life in the country! Less than a 5 minute walk to the pond for all your water activities!
  • Rebecca's place is amazing!! We wish we could have stayed a 3rd night. It was soo peaceful and relaxing. Everything we needed was there. You literally only have to bring your clothes, food, and wood. We absolutely loved it!! The cabin can fit 10 people. We went as a group of 6. It was a beautiful time in a beautifully secluded spot! I will be going back there for sure :)

  • We had an amazing time at the Lazy Daisy. The cabin is beautifully decorated and had everything we needed and more. It was right on the lake for a bit of fishing , perfect for a fire and the beds were amazingly comfortable. Will definitely be back .

    Kathleen2019-08-30T00:00:00Z
  • We had such a great weekend at the Lazy Daisy! A beautiful, spacious, clean spot with all the necessities for a weekend getaway - we were pleasantly surprised to find a BBQ, too! The cabin is far enough from St. John’s that it feels remote while still being close to nearby amenities such as convenience and grocery stores. There was plenty to do, too - we thoroughly enjoyed swimming in the pond, having campfires, visiting La Manche, and spending time on the (gorgeous) wrap-around deck. A 10/10 spot for fun times with friends... we can’t wait to come back!

    Claire2019-08-04T00:00:00Z
  • This place is huge and on a beautiful pond! Super location for all ages and large families. Would definitely stay here again.

  • We had a lovely girls weekend at the Lazy Daisy! Fits lots of people comfortably. Lovely wrap around outdoor patio with gorgeous lighting so you can be outside all night! Love the decor, nautical themed and tasteful. Would definitely stay again. There is an amazing new restaurant near by as well, about a 15 minute drive called Fork Restaurant which was incredible! Thank you. Note: Not being able to drink the water was no problem as there is a water cooler with plenty of extra water jugs provided.

Perfect for one or two guests, this mini-flat has everything you need to have an amazing stay during your Newfoundland vacation. Your health and wellness is important to us. All food grown in the Whale House garden is free of pesticides, and the strawberries it produces all summer long are some of the finest in Newfoundland (as us for a sample, we love to share). When it rains, we collect rainwater to water our gardens and all organic waste gets composted on site. We do everything we can to limit our ecological footprint, which means you can feel good about your choice to stay with us.

  • This place is literally a hidden gem in the area- Amanda was an amazing host offering my accommodations on the day on the hour to get out of a rain storm while I was travelling through. I ended up stayed two days and really enjoyed the private getaway feel and how the place was a mini apartment essentially, providing me with everything I needed to cook my own meals, made a good cup of coffee, and sit out on a picnic table to enjoy! As well, their ecofriendly reminders and touches were phenomenal- the water tasted amazing and my hair was so soft after the shower!

    Kirstin2019-09-28T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay at Amanda's place; very comfortable and has all the amenities needed. It is in a great location; we were able to see seals and dolphines from the East Coast Trails directly accessible from the home-stay. Our nights were filled with tasty BBQs and a comfortable firepit. We are from a large city so the eco rules were different, but we respected the eco-compassion none the less. Places we explored included: Witless Bay, Mobile beach and trail, and my favourite LaMarchant suspension bridge! We ate at a delicious resterant nearby named The Captian's Table. PS Amanda's friendly ducks were my wife's favourite!

  • Amanda's place is a fantastic stop for those on the road, and hiking the east coast trail. Located aproximentley 40 mins from St John's and an hour and a half from the ferry in Argentia. The place was super clean and we felt very comfortable. There is a fire pit and barbeque outside and it is a great spot to chat with other travellers.

  • The whale house guest house is in a great spot. Perfect place to lay your head after a long day of hiking the nearby trails. Amanda our host booked us dinner reservations at a place called “the fork” that we could walk to.....it was a five star dinner for sure.

  • This place is a hidden gem in Tors Cove. It is the perfect spot to unwind from the busy city life and slow it all down. The East Coast Trail is just moments away, and we were lucky enough to see some beautiful Icebergs. The pond is gorgeous and the dock leading down to is is sure to bring a smile to your face. We took our kayak and paddle board and explored the little islands on the pond. The cabin itself has stunning views and a modern touch both relaxing and stylish. Not to mention local coffee shop only moments away. We enjoyed cooking in the cabin, with the open concept appeal to interact while you cook for your friends. You have to stay here!

  • This home was exceeded our expectations! It was so cozy and just what we wanted. Super convenient location and a quick drive to St. John’s. I would go back in a heart beat!

  • Beautiful setting. Great getaway space. All the comforts of home in a small package. If you are looking for a home base from which to hike, kayak, canoe, and bird watch on the Avalon peninsula this is the place. St John's city life is close enough to enjoy which is a nice change of pace when you want it. Lots of opportunity to learn about world, national, and local history. Friendly and helpful people. Great way to experience Newfoundland if you have a spirit of adventure. The weather is constantly changing here so be prepared for sun, rain, and wind every day. Good shoes and good rain gear will insure a fabulous visit to this area in Newfoundland. The cottage kitchen is well equipped and the appliances all work well. Plan to grocery shop and eat in most nights. Tors Cove is a rural fishing community so there is limited access to fine dining.

  • Incredible location with a view of the lake in front of you. The house has all the modern amenities and location couldn't be better when it comes to privacy and quietness - when you want to get away from it all and just relax, and have it as a base for exploring Newfoundland. We loved staying there. We would love to come back!
