Your guide to Prevelly
All About Prevelly
The small, coastal town of Prevelly — located in the South West region of Western Australia — is a popular destination for keen surfers. The coastline around Prevelly is well-known for its world-class surf breaks, and is home to a professional surfing competition every year. Prevelly is also at the mouth of the Margaret River, which is an ideal spot for calm-water activities like kayaking, swimming, and stand-up paddle boarding.
The Margaret River wine region is just a ten minute drive from Prevelly, and offers an abundance of renowned wineries, as well as boutiques, restaurants, local providores, and galleries to explore. The area is best known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc.
Prevelly is also along the route of the popular and very scenic coastal walk, the Cape to Cape Trek, which offers some beautiful scenery and the chance to spot migrating whales in the cooler months.
The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Prevelly
A world-class surf destination, Prevelly is popular with surfers throughout the year. Summer is usually the most popular season, with long, hot days. Autumn is a lovely time to visit, with cooler daytime temperatures and less humidity. The water in autumn is often still warm enough to swim, and it’s an ideal time to do the Cape to Cape walk as you might also be lucky enough to spot humpback whales off the coast. Winter is also a very pleasant time to visit, as temperatures don't drop too much, and you’ll be sure to find less crowded surf breaks. Spring is pretty and brings budding wildflowers and some fantastic local produce. This is an ideal time to relax in the shade with a picnic rug and a cheese plate from one of the many wineries in the Margaret River region.
Top things to do in Prevelly
Cape to Cape Track
If you’re looking for some activity other than surfing, try the Cape to Cape Track — a long-distance hike that runs along the coastline through the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park. Though it spans 123 kilometres in total, you don’t have to complete the entire track, and it’s possible to dip in and out for certain sections. Parts of the track have boardwalks or are paved, and are suitable for prams and wheelchairs. It’s also a beautiful way to see the coastline and some impressive caves and rock formations.
The Margaret River Region
Prevelly can also be a handy base for exploring the nearby Margaret River region — one of Australia’s most renowned and celebrated wine-growing regions. There are plenty of local operators that run guided wine and sightseeing tours, and the region is host to cultural, artistic, and musical events throughout the year. There are also some fantastic restaurants in the region, as well as galleries, historic sites, and museums.
Surfers Point Beach
Prevelly is best known for its world-class surf, which attracts surfers from all over the world. It’s home to Surfers Point Beach which can attract huge waves — up to 25 feet — and is recommended for experienced surfers only. However, you certainly don’t need to be a pro to enjoy the waves in this part of the world. There are plenty of other breaks and beaches around Prevelly that are suitable for both beginner and intermediate surfers.
