All about Preston Beach

Preston Beach in Western Australia is a popular seaside destination for nature lovers, fishing enthusiasts, surfers, and those looking to explore the vast nature reserves and Jarrah forest ecologies unique to the region. This laid-back community is located just south of Perth on one of the westernmost prominences on the continent. The town makes a perfect jumping-off point for anyone looking to explore the surrounding wilderness areas, like the Myalup State Forest, Lane Poole Reserve, or Leschenault Peninsula Conservation Park. The endangered hooded plover and thrombolites known as “living rocks” are just some of the unique flora and fauna that can be found here.

Golf courses with world-class views are available near the Yalgorup National Park, but watch out for the kangaroos and emus native to the area, who have been known to wander onto the fairways from time to time. Kilometres of beachside walking trails meander up and down the coast, providing easy access to stunning ocean vistas and some of the best fishing in southwest Australia. Preston Beach is a mecca for those wishing to take in a wide variety of outdoor activities while enjoying the area’s unique ecological makeup.

What are the top things to do in Preston Beach?

Yalgorup National Park

Just outside of Preston Beach, this national park includes 10 lakes and an internationally recognized and protected wetlands ecosystem that is home to numerous species of migratory birds. Many threatened species of plant and animal life reside in the park as well. Several options exist for nature walks that cater to most ages and fitness levels; picnicking areas are also available.

Lake Clifton

Lake Clifton sits inside the Yalgorup National Park. However, it is well worth its own dedicated day of exploration due to the unique biological makeup of the water. Known the world over for hosting one of the earth’s last Thrombolite populations, these “living rocks” are some of the oldest organisms on the planet and provide a window into our biological past. A boardwalk over the water’s edge offers ample viewing opportunities of these ancient organisms.

Local Vineyards

The vineyards around Preston Beach are in what is known as the Peel Wine Region. Producing well-known varieties of Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, and Cabernet, several wineries in the area offer tasting parties, tours, and vineyard walks. In addition, some of the more well-known wineries host seasonal events with musical acts, food, games, and local business vendors throughout the year. So grab a picnic and enjoy an afternoon full of sunshine, wine, and the rolling hills of wine country.
