‘Whitechapel’ a converted church, Macedon Rangers

DilayRating, 5 stars1 week ago
A magical winter retreat! This is the most charming church converted to the perfect peaceful getaway for couples—cozy, unique, and full of character. The hosts were proactive, responsive and thought of everything, and the setting is absolutely stunning. Being able to bring our clingy dog was also a bonus. Can’t wait to return!

Mountain View Cabin

ChristianRating, 5 stars1 week ago
Staying at Rachel’s place was an absolute dream! From the moment we arrived, we felt completely at home. The space was spotless, beautifully styled, and filled with thoughtful touches that showed how much care Rachel puts into hosting. Every detail was perfect – from the soft linens and well-stocked kitchen to the welcoming note and local recommendations. Rachel was incredibly responsive, kind, and genuinely went above and beyond to make our stay special. You can tell she truly cares about her guests' experience. Whether you're visiting for work or a relaxing getaway, this is the kind of place you’ll want to come back to again and again. Thank you, Rachel, for an unforgettable stay – we can’t wait to return!

Macedon Ranges - Fellcroft Farmstay - Wren

FelicityRating, 5 stars1 month ago
This Farmstay was one of our favourite places that we have stayed not only in Victoria but across the various states and countries to which we have travelled. Veronica has really thought through the guest experience and has everything covered that you could think of. The surrounds and views are stunning, the interior of the property is so well done and the animals amazing (bird life, farm animals and native wildlife (especially Wally the wombat)). If anything, the property was better than expected from the photos. Veronica was the perfect balance of helpful and available, whilst respecting our privacy. It is the sort of place where you are central enough to many places to keep you busy or you can be content just staying at the property, doing very little and enjoying the spa bath. We are already planning our next visit for later this year!

Banksia Mt Macedon - Modern country retreat

ThomRating, 5 stars1 month ago
Excellent base for a weeklong stay. Had everything I needed when traveling by myself, minus perhaps an ironing board. Even better than the photos - and very tastefully decorated and styled with quality linens, towels, toiletries, etc. Will hopefully stay again.

Just spent the long weekend at Connie's place with friends. Despite the cold damp weather Connie's place was the perfect spot to explore Kyneton and the Macedon Ranges. Warm and comfortable and a great kitchen for cooking. Connie is a gem and always responsive.

Enchanting log cabin in the woods

MorganRating, 5 stars1 week ago
Felt like being in an oasis whilst only an hour or so out of Melbourne. Susan’s place was a sanctuary the perfect winter escape! The bed was so comfortable, we had a nightly fire, there were birds and kangaroos on the doorstep and the bath was deep and perfect for relaxing. Everything was so well thought out, we had the best stay!

Your guide to Mount Macedon

All About Mount Macedon

Sitting approximately 615 metres above sea level, Mount Macedon is a short drive northwest of Melbourne, and a popular spot for bushwalking, picnics, and invigorating weekend getaways. This picturesque town boasts several heritage gardens, as well as wild and rugged bushland, with over 30 kilometres of walking paths that wind through the Macedon Regional Park, past towering eucalypts, pine trees, and tall mountain ash. If you’re a keen hiker, you can complete the full loop, which takes around seven hours and takes you up a steep incline to the renowned Camels Hump rock formation, or choose from a range of shorter walks, with options for all levels of ability. Keep an eye out for wombats, echidnas, and all kinds of bird life, including rosellas, galahs, eagles, and blue wrens.

There’s also a golf course and lots of opportunities for road cycling, with some challenging options for experienced riders. Or, after expending some energy outdoors, you can explore nearby wineries, as the area is known for its cool climate wines and locally-distilled gin.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Mount Macedon

Mount Macedon changes with the seasons and is a beautiful place to visit any time of year. In autumn, the trees are a striking blend of colours, and in spring, the mountain is decorated with a rainbow of daffodils, magnolias, wisteria, and rhododendron. Mount Macedon is also an ideal destination for a winter getaway with cool days and potentially a sprinkling of snow. You may wish to time your visit around the opening of the gardens, many of which are listed by the National Trust. Forest Glade is open all year, whereas the Gardens of Tieve Tara are usually only open during spring and autumn. The Garden Lover’s Fair is held every October in the Bolobek gardens.

Top things to do in Mount Macedon

Memorial Cross Reserve

At the top of Mount Macedon you’ll find the Memorial Cross Reserve, which hosts a heritage-listed memorial honouring Australians who lost their lives in war. After Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance, this is considered one of the most significant war memorials in the state of Victoria. There’s a picnic and barbeque area in the reserve, as well as a tearoom where you can enjoy a cup of tea and some fresh scones with a view.

Hanging Rock Reserve

Though there’s a Pinnacle Walk to the summit, there are also several gentler, pram-friendly walks available, and a café where you can stop for refreshments. The area has plenty of areas for picnics and barbeques, and trout fishing in the dam is also popular with families.

Mushroom spotting

In winter and autumn, the national park is a renowned spot for mushroom spotting. Not many people know about the wide array of mushrooms that grow in the forests of Mount Macedon — in the dry, open woodlands on the northern and western slopes, as well as in the thicker forests and cool gullies. There’s a huge diversity to explore — but unless you have specific knowledge, or are with a guide, it’s wise to look rather than touch. Bring some firewood, picnic, and a hot thermos for a barbeque after your walk.
