All about Maldon
All that glitters really is gold in Maldon, which is located around a 1.5 hour drive northwest of Melbourne. A living testament to Australia’s gold mining history, Maldon has National Trust heritage status. Between its railway station, old post office, churches, and pretty shop fronts that line the town centre, walking around here is like taking a step back in time. Look a little closer though, and behind the painted brick 19th century facades you’ll find cafes, art galleries, and independent shops, each with distinct character. The history of the Victoria Goldfields looms large here — ride an old-world steam train to nearby Castlemaine, or explore the mines on a candlelit tour.
Old-fashioned sweet shops and antique stores are brimming with treasures and homegrown produce abounds at the bi-weekly farmers’ market. Maldon also plays host to colourful local festivals throughout the year, dedicated to local food, antiques, and folk music.
What are the top things to do in Maldon?
Carman's Tunnel
When in Maldon, do as the miners did and head down into the depths of Carman's Tunnel gold mine. Here, it’s always dark, the temperature is on the cool side, and the only way to get around is to follow a guide, your path lit by the warm flicker of a candle. Learn about the history of the area and mining techniques, and hear stories from the gold rush days.
Mount Towengower
Hike the eight-kilometre loop to the top of Mount Towengower, where an imposing lookout tower stands tall on the mountain peak. Climb to the top and you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views over the surrounding mountains. This landmark has been standing since 1923, and is a particularly scenic spot for a picnic.
Steam Train
Ride the Victorian Goldfields Railway from Maldon to Castlemaine, a living relic of the gold rush and golden age of rail travel. Roll down the windows in your private compartment and listen to the whistle blow as you wind through the Victorian countryside. If you’re feeling ritzy, opt for first class tickets and get comfy in the Edwardian and Art Deco parlour carts.
