Cob Cottage

Channel the pursuit of pause in this one-of-a-kind earth house. The cozy retreat was hand-sculpted using local and sustainable natural materials, and features a central living space with cantilevered slab stairs leading to the loft bedroom. Guests have access to the entire cottage and surrounding property. We live in the neighbouring house, and are happy to give advice or answer questions to help you make the most of your stay. The neighborhood is quite rural and mostly agricultural with several farms and a small private vineyard. The home is a 10 minute walk from the beach and a 20 minute walk from a family grocery and deli specializing in local organic produce. Mayne Island has a small community bus. Times and routes are limited, particularly in the winter. It will stop at the driveway. We also have an official hitch hiking system with signed Car Stops where you can wait for a ride. Usually you don't have to wait long. We are happy to offer pickup and drop off at the ferry dock as a courtesy to encourage car-free travellers, on days when the community bus is not running. Please let us know ahead of time that you'll be coming without your own transportation, and we will make sure that either we or the community bus (which will drop you off at our driveway) are there to meet you when your ferry arrives. The BC Ferries terminals near Victoria and Vancouver are easily reachable via public transit from their respective airports and downtowns.

The property is rural about 11 miles from any store but close to beautiful hiking trails, and has access to a staircase down to a deck at the water where we swim. We face Saltspring Island and the southern tip of Wallace - in fact it is just a kayak ride across Trincomali channel to Salt Spring.

We had a great stay with Tina! The cabin was exactly what we were after; a quiet retreat to read some books, feeling like we’re in the middle of nowhere/but able to pop into town for a coffee 10 mins away! The kitchen had all we needed for 3 nights of cooking and everything was clean and seemingly brand new/well looked after! We were really happy to find that the outdoor shower had good pressure and really hot water too! Would definitely recommend/visit again and thank you again Tina for being a great host!

The best location on the island and a very supportive host. The cabin was very clean and comfortable. We loved walking down to water right from the property and discover tide pools. We saw 5-12 eagles every day, seals and even a river otter. It was easy to get to places on the island like shops and restaurants, even though we used kitchen for many of our meals, it had everything we needed. Park allowed us to bring our own roll up mat for an extra guest and provided extra pillows and chairs.

The hosts were great with giving us detailed instructions how to get there, and were able to let us check in early which is super helpful for us. Home is quiet and the views are astonishing. Even walking to the town was easy (about 20 minutes), or just short 3 minute drive. Highly recommended and hopefully will come back again.

We stayed at Jessie’s place for a romantic 1-night getaway. The neighbourhood itself is peaceful with views of the ocean. We had a very restful sleep — bed is super cozy and comfy! The space is charming with lots of thoughtful touches (we loved the cathedral windows in the bedroom with views of the night sky). Overall a lovely stay and relaxing place for a getaway!

A very peaceful location! Up a steep hill so a car is needed. But quiet, not many other houses around the area. The suite was so nice to have the sunroom with a view of the ocean and Fernwood wharf in the distance. Well equipped kitchenette and everything needed was provided. Try talking the walk down to shore access points on sunset drive, or going a bit further north to arbutus or Southey point. Very quiet places to get to the water!
