All about Dinner Plain

Dinner Plain is located within the mountain ranges of north east Victoria, around 375 kilometres from Melbourne, and only a 20 minute drive from one of Australia’s most popular ski resorts. This picturesque and quiet village offers panoramic alpine views, stunning landscapes with the scent of eucalyptus in the air from the snow gumtrees. There is plenty of local wildlife to spot too, with the Alpine National Park at its doorstep.

In the winter, Dinner Plain offers good skiing on gentle slopes with no resort entry fees; it also boasts Australia’s longest toboggan run, which is suitable for adults and children. In the summer, the snow melts away revealing many interesting walking and mountain bike tracks, and the alpine air provides a relief from a hot summer in the city. If you are a serious hiker, you could challenge yourself to the 10-kilometre trek to nearby Mt. Hotham, while taking in spectacular scenery along the way.

What are the top things to do in Dinner Plain?

Hiking

If you are visiting Dinner Plain in the summer months hiking in the Victorian highlands offers naturally stunning mountain ranges and breathtaking scenery along many walking trails. From the bare ridges of Mount Feathertop to the rugged, gumtree-lined Cobungra Ditch walking track, there are a range of different options to suit all ages and abilities.

Tobogganing

Take a run-down Dinner Plain’s Cobungra Platter Slope. At around 100 metres long, this is the biggest and longest toboggan slope in Australia. Tobogganing is free and with no resort entry fees to get into Dinner Plain, it is the perfect affordable family day out in the snow. Bring your own toboggan or you can hire one from most of the ski hire shops in the village.

Cycling

Cycle along the Great Alpine Road, Australia’s highest sealed road, an experience suitable for both amateur and advanced cyclists. You can enjoy a more relaxed and scenic journey between Dinner Plain and Mt. Hotham or go further afield with rides to nearby towns like Omeo and Harrietville. For a real challenge, try the Omeo to Dinner Plain ride covering the Seven Peaks of the Alpine National Park.
