Moonta Bay is a popular coastal town in South Australia. A two-hour drive north-west of the capital Adelaide and located on the shores of Spencer Gulf on the Yorke Peninsula, the town boasts sandy beaches and coves, clear blue waters, and the town’s distinctive L-shaped jetty with an attached swimming enclosure, which is suitable for swimmers of all ages.

Moonta has a rich mining history, and it has earned the town national heritage status. You can uncover its famous mining past on one of the Moonta Mines Walking Trails or inside the Moonta Mines Museum. The town is also well known for its famous Cornish pasties — a remnant of the town’s mining past. You will be able to sample the local delight in any one of the town's bakeries. Moonta Bay also makes up part of the Yorke Peninsula’s famous “Walk the Yorke” — a 500 kilometres trail that travels through towns along the coast, taking in the region’s spectacular scenery.

Moonta Bay is a great place to visit all year round, but if there was a best time to go it would be in the summer months from November to February, when the days are filled with warm sunshine, perfect for enjoying all the water activities on offer. March and April are also great months to visit, when the weather is milder than in the summer but still pleasantly warm. The town also plays host to country music concerts, usually in July and August to raise money for the local Women's and Children's Hospital. Take a Walk Along the Moonta Bay Jetty

Moonta Bay Jetty is a distinctive L-Shape and features a swimming enclosure which is popular with swimmers of all ages during the day. In the evening, take a walk along the historic jetty and enjoy the glorious sunset. There are plenty of seats on the jetty where you can stop and enjoy some local fish and chips, while you take in the amazing colours of the sunset.

Explore Old Mine Shafts on a Moonta Mines Heritage Walk

Take a tour of the Moonta Mines on one of three heritage walks and get an appreciation of the conditions that early copper miners were faced with. The historic Miners Cottage walk takes you past old mine shafts and several remnants of last century's copper industry. You will also pass the tourist train, tourist village, local museum, and the old sweet shop.

Visit the water park

It is a great place for kids of all ages to have fun in the water, and entry is free. The year-round water park features slides, fountains, waterfalls, and tipping buckets that will keep them entertained for hours. There are many spots where parents can relax and keep an eye on the children, while having an eye on the coastal views in the background.
