Travel like a local

Cutting-edge science, 17th-century architecture, political think tanks, and a harbor (hold the “Rs”) crucial to American history—this isn’t your typical US city. Welcome to Boston, where it can feel like a tech-booming metropolis or a small sports town depending where you end up for an after-work drink. For things to do in Boston, embrace its history on the Freedom Trail, take a North End (Little Italy) food tour, and shuck oysters, among other activities led by locals, with Airbnb Experiences.

Bloodlust: Mysteries of Victorian Boston
Explore a true crime murder mystery in quaint, post-Civil War Boston. In the late 1800s, Boston experienced a rash of gruesome murders and unexplained phenomena. People were accused of being witches and vampires, and of conversing with the dead, all while a serial murder lurked just out of sight. Looking for a time that isn't listed? Send me a message and maybe we can work something out. While we made pioneering strides in the new fields of forensics and toxicology, we hosted mad scientists and psychologists who treated the mentally ill in unsavory ways. The background for a number of historic movies and shows, the country’s largest Victorian neighborhood, the South End is all within a few blocks of Copley Square and Back Bay. Buried beneath this neighborhood's eye-catching English gardens and breathtaking brick rowhouses, the Gothic churches and strange statuary that tourist rarely see, is a unique experience you won’t want to miss. There will be some graphic discussion of violence and murder. Participant discretion is advised.
The Revolutionary Story Tour
A complete retelling of the American story from the founding of Boston to the Declaration of Independence. Unlike most tours which limit themselves exclusively to what's on the Freedom Trail - walking from one end to the other and providing short highlights and separate overviews of each stop - this tour pulls everything together into an immersive citywide narrative: recreating the drama and recapturing the energy that invented America. We visit 14 (of 16) iconic Freedom Trail landmarks in the same order in which the history unfolded, bringing to life the passions, personalities, and psychologies behind world changing events like The Boston Massacre, Boston Tea Party, Midnight Ride of Paul Revere, and Battle of Bunker Hill. We also explore all of Boson's original neighborhoods (including those not on the Freedom Trail) covering both the major sights and the hidden gems so you'll enjoy the charm of the old town while getting a real sense of the beautiful and booming modern city as well. No big crowds or silly costumes. The story incorporates insights from the most prestigious scholars in the field and is presented with light-hearted humor and enthusiasm; it will be equally educational as entertaining for history buffs and newcomers alike. Walk Your Way Through Boston's History
We will start our tour at the Lenox hotel in the heart of the Back Bay neighborhood, and will end at historic Faneuil Hall where there are endless places to eat and explore after the tour. Not only will we visit the famous Boston Freedom Trail, but also hidden treasures not covered on other tours. My tour runs approximately 2 1/2 hours. Unlike some other walking tours, I try to cover as much of Boston as possible. The walk is not fast paced, but we do cover about two miles. Wear comfortable shoes. The Back Bay - Explore one of Boston's most famous neighborhoods. Home to some of Boston's most beautiful buildings such as the Boston Public Library and the Trinity Church. Boston Public Garden - Visit the beautiful gardens, and say hello to the Swan Boats, and the Make Way for Ducklings statues! If you come during the right time of year, they may even be donning some accessories! Boston Common - Bask in the freedom of the oldest public park in the United States. Cheers Bar - Where everybody knows your name. Beacon Hill - View Boston's most historic neighborhood. Complete with original brick sidewalks and gas lanterns (you can thank some friendly 20th-century neighborhood rioters for those bricks). The New State House - Is as impressive as the political debates inside...we think.

In this experience you’ll make your own mosaic at the SoWa Mosaics studio in the heart of Boston’s Art + Design district! SoWa Mosaics is a bright and welcoming space featuring mosaics made with homemade tiles of all shapes and sizes. Each student chooses a square board or picture frame as their base. We will spend a few minutes talking about mosaics and our unique process then you’ll get started glueing tiles and creating your own unique mosaic selecting from an abundance of our handmade colorful tiles. During the workshop we’ll be walking around to help guide and encourage your work. For smaller groups we like to sit down and create one with you too! At the end of the workshop, your mosaic will be glued and safe to take home but needs a day to get sturdy and dry completely before you can grout it. Each student goes home with a goodie bag containing grout, gloves and instructions on how to put the finishing touches on the artwork. After or before the workshop we encourage you to walk around and visit the 100+ other artists, galleries and shops here. Sundays are the most active with several other studios open and a vintage market in the basement. On Sundays in May thru October we have food trucks and outdoor markets too! Your guide to Boston

What do locals do in Boston?

The seasons (and yes, sports) really do factor into what people do here. In the summertime, if you’re not reveling in Provincetown (P-Town) or relaxing on the Cape, the Seaport District hums with outdoor dining and harborside bars. During the holidays, people get festive with a quick trip over to Salem during the fall months, and a stroll around Beacon Hill just feels that much more special when the leaves turn, or the snow falls. And you’ll always find action at (or near) Fenway, the TD Garden, and Gillette Stadium, depending on the sports season.

Where do locals eat in Boston?

You can’t beat the lobster rolls and chowda, but there’s also an eclectic and impressive dining scene in Boston, where Michelin-star chefs and old-school diner cooks dish out memorable meals.

North End

This part of town is synonymous with Italian food. Heated debates can arise from where to get the best cannoli (you can hear all about it on a food tour), but one thing is always agreed upon: this is an authentic Boston neighborhood, the city’s oldest in fact. The smell of pasta lures you off the cobblestone streets and sidewalks and into the dining rooms of historic buildings, where Italian grandma-approved recipes fill the menus. It’s also where you can catch a glimpse of the Paul Revere House, built around 1681, in between bites.

South End

Not to be confused with South Boston (better known as Southie), the South End is an extremely walkable Victorian-style neighborhood with galleries, brownstones, and some of the trendiest places to eat and drink. It’s as much a place to go for lunch options as it is for cocktails with friends, or a romantic date night. Bonus: It’s not far from Chinatown and Back Bay for even more good eats.

Jamaica Plain

This is Boston’s melting pot, where global cuisine is at its finest, and sometimes still the most affordable. Centre Street is at the heart of it all, a string of independently owned cafes and restaurants where it’s common to see the owners involved in daily operations.

What are the best ways to experience Boston’s history?

Take a Freedom Trail tour (really)

Sometimes, even locals like to play tourist in their own city, and the Freedom Trail is a good example of that. Whether it’s on a jog, stroll, or visit to entertain out-of-town visitors, there’s plenty of reasons to travel along this 2.5-mile path dotted with 16 historical landmarks (just follow the red brick road). Be sure to make a stop at the Quincy Market for fresh fare from local vendors.

Learn Boston’s legacy through its food

Tour Cambridge to see the Harvard campus, with stops at local eateries along the way. Take cooking classes with local families who share their Italian heritage. Eat the lobsta roll how it’s supposed to be eaten (in a hot dog bun). Boston is a city of traditions and history and you’ll be more than satisfied with what you discover through its food.

Explore its academic side

This is an intellectual hub, and you don’t have to be big on poli-sci or mathematics to appreciate what this city has done for the world when it comes to innovation and research. It is a city of firsts: the first school, the first subway, and the first public park — downtown’s Boston Common where you can still explore today. Take a walk with a local expert to see the architecture and history of places like Harvard, and learn the women’s history of Beacon Hill.
