Tips from locals
The Hunley was the first submersible used in actual combat, when the Confederacy was attempting to break the blockade of Charleston. Though it kept sinking and killing everyone on board, they finally brought down the Housatonic - and then it sank again, killing everyone on board. They recovered it in 2000.
Visit the Hunley, the world's first successful combat submarine. Tours are on Saturdays and Sundays, check website for tour hours and prices.
The world's first successful sub (in 1864!) This is a Must-See experience. Learn more about the Civil War and Charleston's pivotal role in it.
H. L. Hunley, often referred to as Hunley, was a submarine of the Confederate States of America that played a small part in the American Civil War. It is a favorite for us because your host was apart of a team devoted to the recovery of the wreckage from the ocean floor. Tours are available on weekends.
