Why locals recommend it
Thanks to Gordon, the cheese buyer, the selection in this worker-owned co-op is phenomenal. He often judges cheese competitions and writes cheese books. He can tell fabulous stories about each cheese and cheesemaker. This store is an example of a community-minded slice of San Francisco. If you were driving by, under the freeway, you’d think it was a warehouse. They’re always bringing in interesting cheeses, so don’t be afraid to try something new. Find Gordon—or anyone who works in the cheese department—and ask them to suggest something.
Tips from locals
Local food co-op with an amazing selection of organic and other specialty foods. Lots of bins for buying in bulk and huge selection of fruits and vegetables, however, they don't sell meat. Bring your cloth bags and walk, bike or take mass transit as parking a car there is extremely difficult.
Organic vegan grocery superstore. Bulk items, special oils, international ingredients, environmentally conscious shopping.
arguably the BEST natural food store in the country - the reason I don't move out of SF
