One of the few 'touristy' places that's TOTALLY worth being a tourist for. The Shining was filmed at Timberline Lodge, but the real reason to go is to see this magnificent lodge built during the WPA. The grand, wooden structure, at 6000 ft. above sea level, is beautiful as is the multi-mountain vista from the deck, not to mention being up-close and personal with Mt. Hood. (elev. 11,250). Lots of great hiking in every direction and great skiing in the winter. An hour and 1/2 from Portland makes it a very doable day trip.

This Historic Lodge was dedicated by Teddy Roosevelt in 1936. In addition to stunning views of the Cascade Range the lodge contains fantastic architecture and original artwork. Be sure to pop up to the Ramshead for a drink.

Most years you can ski or board all year long! Parts of "The Shinning" were filmed at the lodge. Lodge is nearly 6000' above sea level on the south side of Mt. Hood. Makes for a great and up close view of the mountain.

Timberline Lodge is an incredible monument to the WPA program. Spend a few hours wandering around admiring the incredible craft and old-growth timber incorporated in to the structure, grab a hot chocolate and drink it by the fire, or play ping pong on their wooden ping pong table. The front desk will also let you check out games and play them by the fire if you say you're a guest there and give them your ID.
