The construction of the Kutubia Mosque began in 1141 at the request of the Almohad caliph Abd al-Mumin, and attracted particular attention for the height of its minaret and its pink sandstone colour, typical of the city. The Koutoubia mosque is probably Marrakech's most famous icon after Djema el Fna. Being the tallest mosque in the city is also a faboulous orintation point. No 4 sides are identical. Not open to non muslims, but do visit the gardens.
