Join me in Madrid’s extraordinary Reina Sofia Museum for an unforgettable exploration of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) through art, including a guided analysis of Picasso's Guernica. This isn’t just a museum visit—it’s a journey through the social and political forces that shaped Spain’s turbulent history. • Begin with the museum’s transformation and its role in preserving Spain’s modern art. • I’ll walk you through examples of how Spanish artists reflected the growing class divide and political instability in different works and talk about key moments in various political movements as well as the role of art in war-time propaganda. • Finally, we’ll spend time examining Picasso’s Guernica, exploring its symbolism and global impact as a protest to the war itself. • I’ll talk about the aftermath of the Civil War as well, including the repression and exile under Franco’s dictatorship. Leathercraft Workshop in a Traditional Madrilean Neigbourhood

This experience is for those who wish to discover an authentic Spanish Leathercraft Workshop and learn how to make their own Leather items. I will show the participants the use of the tools used for Leathercraft, many of which havent changed since medievil times. I will also introduce them to the variety of different kinds of leather that exist. Each participant will have the opportunity to use real Spanish Cowhide to create a Leather item with their own hands. In the workshop the participants can choose between a pretty travelling purse (with or without a strap), an original belt, a wallet, two different purses or braided bracelets. There is also the opcion of making a piece different from these which will be designed in the act...maybe something one always wanted to make....a handbag, a mobile phone case, a belt pouch ....if this is the case the teacher should be informed beforehand. Each piece will be unique as we will use technique such as stamping or embossing to decorate it. These techniques were introduced by the Moors hundreds of years ago and have a long tradition in Spanish Leathercraft. There will not be many of us in the worshop so we have the chance to get to know eachother without hurry. For those who dont speak Spanish I speak perfect English as I am originally from Ireland. Other things to note We will be using cutter knifes at one stage of the experience although for those who prefer the Handcraftsman will do the cutting.

We will prepare two different types of mediterranean clasic rice recipes, step by step, learning the essential tricks so you can repeat it at home whenever you want. And at the end we go with a tasting of Spanish wine while we eat our rice dishes. Other things to note Some of the rice we prepare includes seafood, fish and other products that may be allergic. Other things to note The address is easy to find, however the doorway leading to the premises above the municipal market is ancient and narrow. The Pacifico Metro Station on Line 1 is just two minutes away.

Discover and Taste China, Bolivia, and Spain in Usera District

This is a Chinese, a Bolivian, and a Spanish that... No, it's not a joke. It's the day-to-day life of the neighborhood. Usera is a working-class neighborhood home to 5% of Madrid's population. Usera is home to Spain's largest Asian and Bolivian community. A neighborhood that speaks Mandarin, Quechua, and Spanish Chinese, among other languages. I suggest a circular trip that will start outside its municipal market. From there, we will visit streets with urban art murals decorating facades as well as the largest concentration of sun dials in the world: 17 in a square kilometer. I will tell you about post-war architecture, evolution in urban and social models, representative buildings and characteristic elements for you to recognize their age. You'll also be able to see old photos and compare them to the present look. During the tour we will visit a Chinese bar and a Bolivian bar and a total of two drinks and two snacks per person during the tour, to choose from options adapted to the group. There will also be time to try your luck: We will finish the visit with a bingo game. The neighborhood walking tour is 2 km and they are comfortably covered, with numerous breaks. I'll take my professional photo camera with me and take the photos you want for you. On this atypical tour you can learn new things and discover a genuine, multicultural and non-touristy part of Madrid.

Enjoy a real Spanish cooking class

Once you arrive we will go to my local market (just a block away) where I will introduce you to my vendors and we will buy the freshest and most seasonal of ingredients. I will explain to you what is on season and why is such a good idea to buy local. Then we will head back home, where we will prepare Gazpacho from scratch. For the main course we will cook my family's recipe of paella with seafood, vegetables and chicken. For dessert, seasonal fruit to end the class on a sweet note. All the classes can be adapted to vegetarians and vegan visitors, but if you have any other allergies or food requirements just ask! Whenever the weather is nice, we will eat outside, al fresco, at my big terrace, check the pictures! But if it's cold or raining, we will eat indoors. Other things to note: There is no lift/elevator in the building, so no suitable for people with mobility issues (four flights of stairs to walk up). There is 1 cat in the flat, not suitable for people with cat allergies.

Cooking and Tasting Traditional Paella and Tapas

Let's start by cooking a tapas menu with traditional dishes. We use fresh seasonal, and local produce. We distribute the cooking chores and prepare paella with seafood and chicken and some traditional tapas. During the preparation you can taste some wines from Spanish regions. The price includes all the ingredients, we use top quality products, local, organic. And you can also drink the drinks you want, beer, wine, infusions, juices, etc. The workshop is organized in a participatory way, because I think if you prepare your own tapas they will know you delicious. When you return to your home you can prepare a real paella and some delicious tapas for your own and share your experience. Other thing to note We are in a new area of Madrid, during your visit to Carabanchel Alto you can know a not very touristy area, with interesting examples of social housing architecture. It is also an opportunity to enjoy a quiet moment on your visit to Madrid, outside the commercial circuits but at the same time, just 15 minutes from downtown by taxi.

The Reina Sofía Museum offers collections of contemporary art. You will see the work of Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Miró, Max Ernst, Man Ray and more. You will be surprised with the story behind each painting and we can share our knowledge and our opinions about them. I have chosen the most important works of the main collection to share it with visitors in an entertaining and simple way. You will not get lost in the huge museum, I will accompany you and you will know the most important and famous works from the end of the 19th century, avant-gardes of the 20th century. The Reina Sofía also offers temporary exhibitions with interesting contents that you can visit after our tour. Other things to note You can bring your camera although there are some rooms where it is not allowed to take photos, in most of the tour you are allowed to. You can store your jacket and backpack at the museum's storage facilities.

We'll explore some of Madrid's most notable street art in places that are essentially unknown by outsiders. We'll see the work of local artists and learn about some of the different street art techniques. We'll check out the hub of Madrid's underground art scene and I'll show you some of our friends' artworks. Other things to note Wear comfortable shoes for walking and bring your camera to capture images of street art. We do not cancel because of rain. Please note that the tours start at 11.15am, not 11.00 (the Airbnb app doesn't allow us to choose this exact timming)
