All about Sheffield
Located on the northwest coast of the island state of Tasmania, Sheffield is renowned for its butterfat products, and for being one of the best dairy farming towns in all of Australia. While this friendly rural town was once little more than an industrial farming hub, today its thriving arts community attracts visitors from far and wide.
Often referred to as the Town of Murals, Sheffield is renowned for its building fronts which are covered in colourful images. This all came about thanks to the pioneering work of the Kentish Association for Tourism and a local man who collectively made the decision to begin painting murals across the town centre. Aside from art attractions, you can also enjoy outdoor activities at the nearby conservation areas and reserve, such as camping at Lake Barrington and hiking to Kimberly’s Lookout.
What are the top things to do in Sheffield?
The Town’s Murals
Get your trip off to a colourful start by heading on an art walk around the town centre of Sheffield. The first mural was painted here in 1986, and many more have been added to the collection since then. Murals are located on the sides of many buildings, telling the story of locals and the history of the town, such as their roots in dairy farming. Each year, local artists participate in a mural competition that attracts hundreds of visitors every year.
Mount Claude
For 360-degree views of the surrounding towns and villages, grab your boots and hike to the peak of Mount Claude. Though the journey is not particularly lengthy, the trail itself is pretty steep with a spot of scrambling required in order to reach the true summit. Make sure to wear proper hiking shoes and prepare the right equipment for scrambling. If you have extra space in your backpack, bring a camera to take pictures of the surrounding Mount Roland Regional Reserve and Conservation Area.
BBQ at O’Neill’s Creek
To immerse yourself in nature without straying too far from Sheffield proper, be sure to take a trip to O'Neill's Creek Picnic Reserve. Not only are you likely to catch sight of yabbies, freshwater crayfish, and platypus here, but there’s also a forest reserve specially designed for BBQs and overnight camping.
