Pubs and bars

This place looks busy but tables become available quickly and it always has a warm and friendly atmosphere. One of the finest selections of real ales and whiskeys in the city.

Eating

Two locations both nearby, Lothian Road and Teviot Place. One of our favourite places to eat. May have a queue but it goes down quickly. Everything on the menu is delicious (and it's cheaper if you go before 6pm). See also its sister restaurant Saboteur.

The best pizza in Edinburgh in our humble opinion, plus it isn't a chain. Also the best fries in Edinburgh - completely unnecessary because you're full of delicious pizza, but also completely necessary. Really handy location if you're headed to the Festival Theatre.

Absolutely delicious Indian. We've been known to be enticed in just because of the amazing smell of this place. Small dishes to share.

A good stop for a relaxed atmosphere, Scottish cuisine and rugby if it's on. Be prepared, it's one of the hardest menus to choose from.

This has been a more recent discovery and I've been raving about it to anyone who will listen ever since. A beautiful wee Italian bakery with one of the best sandwiches I've ever tasted (the legendary no. 9 - I go for the sweet and smoky topping but you can up the spice with jalapeños). It also serves pastries, coffee and - of course - pasta.

Yum. Yum. YUM. Every time anyone suggests dinner in town, I suggest going here. Sensational Vietnamese food in the Haymarket area.

Neighbourhoods

This is real Edinburgh. Leith covers quite a large area, Leith Walk makes for an always interesting stroll and then The Shore has a great selection of food and drink right on the water. Check out Teuchter's Landing and Kings Wark for great Scottish food. Leith is also now accessible via tram!

Great pubs, great cafes, great independent shops on St Stephen St (including Those Were The Days Vintage), a great independent spectacle shop named Iolla and a food market on a Sunday.
