Parks & Nature

Dense forests, endless beaches, traditional villages, myths, history, beauty. These are only a few of the words that can describe the area. Myths and gold share equally the reputation of Paggaio. “Chrysophore Paggaio”: two words that have become one. With countless cauldrons and wineries, always hospitable. With beeches that make a colorful backdrop on dreamy trekking routes, with chestnuts that are being celebrated and burning the impatient fingers and mushrooms that grow at the edge of the road, beside the stacked woods which are ready for the fireplace. With a view that takes your breath away. Kavala and Thassos right οn your feet, the peninsula of Athos at the edge of your palm, Samothraki and Limnos sometimes, like a shaded reminder in the horizon. With ancient sanctuaries, Byzantine castles, rock paintings of ancient times. All overlaid signs within the dense vegetation or on the steep slopes that are waiting to be explored.

The cave of Aggitis springs is the largest river cave in the world (21 km long) and is located in Prossotsani, in the county of Drama. Its peculiarity lies in the fact that the river Aggitis flows through it. Its rich decoration includes enormous stalactites. The cave is open for visit for a length of 500 meters, while it extends over 21 kilometers in length. Another impressive thing about the cave is the exit of the river through the mountain. In the underground river of the cave end up, among others, the waters of Lekanopedio. The cave belongs to the cave network of the gorge of Aggitis river along with four other famous caves, including the famous Alistratis Cave. Several archaeological findings have been discovered in the area, like a tusk of mammoth, which are all kept in the archaeological museum of Drama. In the cave has also been found unique kinds of fish, such as the “Barbus plebejus” and the “Leucipus cephalus macedonicus” at a depth of 6,500 meters, as well as a unique kind of translucent stone crayfish at a depth of 7,100 meters from the surface of the cave.

Baptistery of St. Lydia

This is located on the River Zygaktis, west of ancient Philippi. According to Luke the Evangelist (Acts 6.11), who was a member of Paul’s entourage, this is where the Apostle baptised the first Greek and European Christian woman, the porphyry trader Lydia of Thyatira. Each year on 20 May, the day of memory of the equal to the Apostles, Saint Lydia of Thyatira, after the panegyric Divine Liturgy by the Bishop, clergy and congregation, led by His Eminence the Metropolitan of Philippi, Neapolis and Thassos, go to the River Zygaktis, where adult baptisms are performed. These moments are unique and very emotional. Useful information Address Lydia, 64003 Kavala Telephone +30 2510 516944 Website www.im-philippon.gr Email imphnth@otenet.gr
The impressive Ancient Theater of Philippi was built around 356 BC by Philip II, King of Macedonia, and the father of Alexander the Great. It is located at the foot of the hill of the Acropolis of Philippi. He orchestrated a horseshoe-like orchestra with a duct on his periphery to remove rainwater. The original scene was wooden, but it is not saved. However, archaeologists have identified slots for the large wooden beams of the foundations. A perimeter corridor, the frieze, divides the hollow into two concentric segments including the spectators' positions.

The Archaeological Museum of Kavala
When Paul the Apostle visited Philippi in AD 49/50, founding the first Christian Church in Europe, the appearance of the city changed. Among those who heard the Apostle Paul’s sermon was a woman called Lydia. Lydia decided to be baptised in the waters of the River Zygaktis and she thus became the first Christian woman in the whole of history. The Apostle Paul visited Philippi on another three occasions, a fact that, along with his Letter to the Philippians, shows the long and close relationship between the saint and the community of Philippi. The modern Baptistery of St Lydia (1974), with an octagonal design, can today be found very close by to the archaeological site. On the adjacent bank of the River Zygaktis there is an open-air baptistery within the flowing stream, similar to those that survive in the Early Christian basilicas of Philippi in the shape of a cross. On 20 May each year, the day of memory for St Lydia of Thyatira, an adult baptism is performed in the River Zygaktis after the Divine Liturgy. Being present at the mystery of baptism is a unique spiritual experience.
