I love crossing this suspension bridge on the way to points North. The view of the river and valley is gorgeous.

We have not been in the area long enough to make it over here but it looks very pretty in the photos I've seen. At the very least, it's close enough to make for a good evening or morning dog-walk.

Get on a bike path here that runs all the way to Tappan -- 4 miles or so. On a bluff, through the woods, it's the path of a turn-of-the-century railroad. You'll pass the old station house in Piermont

9W is the big main drag passing through Stony Point. Driving south takes you to a very dense area of restaurants, stores and services of every kind (laundromats, auto repair shops, manicurists.) Driving north is much more scenic and eventually takes you to the area around Bear Mountain State Park.

People come here from all over the world to shop for bargains. It's huge. I wouldn't recommend trying to just pop in to visit one store. Make it a day trip

It is really a shockingly charming little village. You'll see what I mean if you go there, particularly if you drive or bike along the river

Who doesn't want to grab a quick baseball game without the traffic, the high ticket prices at a big league game? On a nice night sitting in the stadium is lovely...

This is a wonderful little neighborhood laundrette with its own Facebook page (The Stony Point Laundry Mat and Wash And Fold.) You can do it yourself in the pleasant, clean, sunlight-filled, WiFi equipped space or drop off with the friendly clientele. It's just up the street on the corner of North Main and 9 West (also known as Liberty Street), right across from the Gulf Station.

Food Scene

It's changed its name to "The Stony Point Family Diner." I love a bustling, neighborhood diner and the food is good -- not franchise cardboard

A great place to buy fresh produce or pick it yourself when in season. They sell a nice selection of organic produce, natural groceries and homemade cider and pies.

I love Indian Food. A nice interior for a sit down dinner but also a buffet with stuff like, my favorite, Sag Paneer available for take-out. Prices are reasonable. For instance, Gulab Jamun, my absolute favorite desert, is $5.95. You can order online for delivery they say. Approximately 20 minutes away by car. www.tulsinanuet.com

Gyro Point Plus is almost directly across from Hogan's in the center of town. It looks like just a take out place from outside but there are tables in the back and the Greek food -- souvlaki, humus, all kinds of lamb dishes, baklava -- is delicious. They do not serve liquor but you can bring your own.

Parks & Nature

This place is amazing. Do you remember the isolated hotel in the movie "The Shining"? This place is kind of like that. First you take a winding drive up Route 9W, ending up at a sprawling complex of buildings, one of them the Bear Mountain Inn, where you can have a meal or just a few drinks with a spectacular view of Bear Mountain State Park in a Adirondack-style room furnished with chandeliers made of antlers and a huge working fireplace with a stone surround. Even if you don't have a meal in the restaurant here, (I can't vouch for the food because I've never ordered) it's worth just coming up for the drive.

I haven't done this myself but I got rave reviews for kayaking on the waterways near the town of Croton-on-Hudson, across the river in Westchester county. There are a number of companies that rent kayaks. I don't have a lead on a specific one unfortunately. Here's one that looks good: https://www.kayakhudson.com/product/hudson-river-equipment-rentals/

Getting Around

From New York City Metro North trains stop at Tarrytown, which is on the other side of the Tappan Zee Bridge from Nyack and is therefore the closest train stop to Stony Point.
