Our Shire

A Tolkien Tour

I grew up in Redding, so when I read the Hobbit and LOTR books as a kid, these were the places that I saw in my mind. I hope you enjoy the natural beauty of our shire during your stay!
The dwarves call it Erebor. The big people call it Mount Shasta. To us, it will always be the Lonely Mountain. From winter sports to summer hiking and mountain climbing, this is a great destination for your next unexpected journey.

Rivendell. The last of Elrond’s kin sailed west long ago and no traces can be found of their home near the base of Burney Falls. Yet, if you listen closely, you can still hear their songs in the noise of the waterfall.

Shelob’s Tunnel. Make sure to bring the light of Eärendil (or at least your cell phone flashlight) as you explore the “Subway Cave”. This 1/3-mile lava tube is right off the highway. And don’t worry, the smell and the webs are all gone! This is a great stop for hot summer days as the temperature in the cave stays at 65 F year-round.

I will take the ring to Mordor! Long have the fires of Ordruin slumbered, but the big people still remember the last time they awoke. If you try to reach the summit of Mt. Lassen, you may wish you had Sam to carry you for a while.

Bring your elvish rope and watch out for sneaking scoundrels that speak to themselves in the third person, precious. The big people call this Castle Crags, and it’s definitely worth going around in circles to explore it.

Follow the footsteps of Legolas and Gimli as you explore these gardens of stone formerly known as the glittering caves of Aglarond. If you want to complete the journey of those famous friends, head to the Trinity wilderness and see if you can find any of the Ents still wandering their woods.

While parts of this gorgeous country have been marred by wildfires, much remains as beautiful as ever. Canyon Creek Lakes is a phenomenal hike that will really make you appreciate your king-sized bed at the end of the day!

This is a favorite spot to stay cool on a summer afternoon and watch the sunset behind the Trinity Alps. There's a staircase down from the parking area so watch your step heading down and take in the view once you get there.

The beach and picnic tables get busy on summer days, especially on the weekends. Bring your SUP or kayak to escape the crowds and explore the nearby islands on Whiskeytown Lake.

While it's not the Prancing Pony, Woody's does serve plenty of local brews and good food. And yes, it comes in pints.

This place is a Redding landmark - simple, tasty burger stand fare without a lot of frills. If Sam Gamgee came for a visit, this is where he'd eat.

Great Happy Hour specials and the best sushi in Redding. This place can get crowded at prime times, so eat early and then go catch the sunset at East Beach or Hilltop Trailhead.
