Stuff to do in town

Londonderry and South Londonderry are pretty Vermont towns with a river running through. They offer beautiful scenery, shops and restaurants. The West River Farmers Market, open on Saturday mornings, provides a thriving marketplace for local producers to showcase their products. Visit D. Lasser Ceramics Art Studio and Showroom in a historic barn. The Garden Fine Dining Restaurant offers an amazing art gallery as well as delicious food, and its annex café offers yummy lunch fare. The New American Grill (which does not take reservations) is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and is a very modern and well-priced eatery. Jake’s Bar and Grill is fun and easy with pub fare and pizza. Londonderry is a cute town with great grocery store named Clark’s, a nice health food store/café, a diner, a butcher, a liquor store, and a general store. You can also visit Taylor Farm, a 180-year old working farm that offers cheese making, sleigh riding, a farm stand, and educational activities. For skiing, Magic Mountain Ski Resort has a 1500-foot vertical drop. The summit is 2850 feet. If you continue on VT. Rt. 100 N to Weston, you will find the famous Vermont Country Store.

The village of Jamaica is adorable. D & K’s General Store has freshly made food, a fantastic selection of beer and wine, fresh baked goods, and gifts. On Sundays (May through October), there is a wonderful farmer’s market on Main St. with live music, fresh food, BBQ, and crafts. There is a tiny library too. Rawsonville is technically part of Jamaica. There are a few great culinary reasons to check it out. Honeypie in Rawsonville offers lobster rolls, grass-fed beef burgers, handmade sausage, fries, and milkshakes (sit down and take out). Also in Rawsonville, is Fran’s Kitchen with an eclectic menu of pizza and Thai food, a craft beer shop, a specialty coffee shop, a gift shop, ski, sport, and bicycle sales/rental shops, a garden center, and a gas station with a large market and deli. A minute north of Rawsonville is the Winhall Market for fresh food and VT gifts, as well as a 24-hour 7 Eleven with a liquor store and lots of midnight snacks. In Winhall, there is a brewpub called the Grindstone Pub (tucked back behind the Lincoln Maple hardware store). The Red Fox Inn pub/restaurant often has live music on the weekends (take VT Rt. 30 N for 2 min and turn left onto Winhall Hollow Rd. Restaurant is 1 mi. up on left). The access road to Stratton Mountain is in Rawsonville.

In Dorset, there are two general stores, the 3 Pears Gallery for Fine Art, and Emerald Lake in Dorset for renting canoes, peddle boats, and kayaks for the day. Dorset Park is popular for its wooded hillside campground, beach and swimming area, and nearby attractions and tourist destinations. The park surrounds 20-acre Emerald Lake, named for the emerald green color of its waters when viewed from above. Restricted to non-motorized watercraft, the lake is ideal for swimming and paddling. The lake also offers anglers an opportunity to catch yellow perch, small mouth bass, northern pike and other warm-water species. The park is a favorite destination of hikers, with the Long Trail and Appalachian Trail nearby, and trails on Dorset Mountain.

The Townshend Dam Waterways can be seen from Rt. 30 but you can drive over the very high bridge too. This is a great spot for hiking and canoeing. There are also great antique shops in Townshend. The Townshend Auction takes place just about every weekend – usually Saturday mornings around 9:30 a.m., but check the website prior to your stay to make sure. Eat at the Dam Diner for a vintage diner experience with the locals.

About 30 mins away is the progressive and artsy town of Brattleboro. There you will find restaurants, shops, galleries, music venues, eateries, breweries, and a fabulous food co-op. To entertain small children, go to the Brattleboro Retreat Petting Zoo. If you love antiquing, visit Twice Upon a Time. For great coffee, go to Mocha Joe’s. For Sushi, Shin La. For an amazing view of the river while enjoying food and drink, go to the Whetstone Brewery. The Marina (3 miles north of downtown Brattleboro on Putney Rd, or Rt. 5.), is also on the river, and is a gorgeous place for lunch or dinner. If you feel like splurging, go to TJ Buckley’s ($$ & BYOB), located in a restored 1925 Worcester Dining Car. It serves local, organic, seasonal food cooked to perfection. Call for reservations! The Latchis Theatre offers movie showings and is a very beautiful and historic theatre. For freshly-brewed beer, be sure to stop in McNeil’s Brewery or the Whetsone Brewery. Brattleboro sits on the Connecticut River and there is a nice view of Wantastiquet Mtn. across the water in New Hampshire.
