Sightseeing

Even if you're not about hiking, this park is a really cool drive through loop. That said, it's well worth your time to hop out and take a walk around. Be sure to bring some water if it's warm out, as Palo Duro Canyon tends to amplify the heat. The lighthouse trail is the perennial favorite, but there's some shorter, really great walks you can do on the back side of the Canyon if you are pressed for time.

Route 66 in Amarillo has a great food and bar scene, a lot of cute antique stores, and LOTS of character. It's also pretty short, and makes for a great walk if you're looking for something to do.

It's not often you can find a pair of massive, ever changing graffiti painted legs. Try your hand at a little spraypaint art if you're feeling bold. Or, snag a cool photo on the way through.

Not only is this a weird, interesting photo opportunity, but its a great way to meet other travelers. There's almost always someone out there taking pictures from out of town. Don't forget your spray paint!

This is about as Amarillo as a musuem can get. If you want to learn about horses and the wild west, this is your spot.

This is purely for those who want a unique experience. If you didn't know, this is where the 72 oz steak challenge is, along with a pretty tourist oriented gift shop and theme. Fun picture moments and decent food.

PHENOMENAL FOOD. Don't let the street food name confuse you, this is artisan level food with a rotating menu covering asian fusion, American classics, and a range of ethnic options depending on the day.

This is a really exciting, locally owned place run by an adorable Punjabi couple who have serious passion for food. This is closer to an Indian Fusion kind of resturaunt, but it's still phenomenal.

Tyler's BBQ is known throughout Texas and probably has a much further reach than that. If you're able to make it on a Saturday, they do beef ribs which are essentially Flintstone's sized (or Texas sized) ribs that are. truly to die for. PLUS- walking distance from home (seriously, it's maybe a football field length away).

By far the best movie theatre in Amarillo. $5Tuesdays for a showing, reclining, heated seats that are superbly comfy, and if you're grabbing food I highly recommend their monster pretzel. It's great. They also have bowling, escape rooms, arcades, and a full menu.

Neighborhoods

Now hear me out- Amarillo's downtown isn't nearly as exciting as a lot of metroplexes, but there was a recent effort to put up murals throughout to spice things up. These works of art are truly outstanding and worth a 10 minute drive or so around the area to hunt them down. Don't worry, they're all huge so you'll know them when you see them.

This is technically another city thats only 15 mins away. Canyon is the quintessential quaint Texas town with a square full of interesting shops. There's also the local university, West Texas A&M, and the Panhandle Plains Musuem. Worth a stop, especially if you're going to Palo Duro Canyon.
