Probably the cafe I frequented the most during Melbourne's notoriously long lockdowns! Great coffee, great brekki and they also have a great Cambodian fare. https://www.broadsheet.com.au/melbourne/elwood/cafes/mr-tuppy

Feeling peckish for some freshly baked bread or pastries? Fifteen minutes walk from front door is this little neighbourhood bakery (which also happens to be right opposite one of our fave Elwood cafes - The Turtle). If you're struggling to choose from the vast array of goodies they offer we recommend the flourless chocolate cake and pistachio cheesecake.

If you happen to cross Brighton Road and take a short stroll over to Ripponlea Village on a Wednesday or a Friday, you might wonder why people are queuing down the street. It's for Zelda's bakery of course. What started as a lockdown hobby quickly grew and now people come from far and wide to get their fix of sourdough bread, delicious pastries and their now infamous babka cake. Worth the wait in line!

One of our personal favorites, just a short walk over Nepean highway to Ripponlea Village and you'll find this little local gem. Breakfast or brunch hits the spot. Grab our favorite dish (any of the Shakshukas) and sit on the bench in the sun and watch Ripponlea Village bustle.

If you are a foodie, this restaurant - just a mere stone's throw from our apartment is a must. Regularly featured in the World’s 50 Best list, reservations are taken on the first Wednesday of each month for the following three months and are typically filled within hours. Ben Shewry’s multi-course tasting menu draws on local myths and personal experiences to reimagine native ingredients. A must for your stay in Ripponlea

Nature and Parks

There are so many options for nature and parks right on the doorstep of our apartment that we often find it difficult to choose! The main one that we can't go past is being able to walk to the beach in under 20 minutes. Laini is a walkaholic and walks the canal down to the beach almost everyday. There is nothing better for mental and physical health than vitamin Sea!
Walk down Byron street (away from Nepean Highway) and within minutes you will find yourself alongside one of Elwood's best kept secrets...the Elwood Canal (officially known as Elster Canal). The Elster Canal path winds through Elwood and is popular with walkers, joggers, runners and cyclists alike. There are benches to sit and watch the ducks and enjoy the local birdlife. The path leads you right to the opening of the canal at Elwood beach.

Elwood beach is one of the best features of our apartment as it is so damn close! Once you get to the beach, you have the choice of veering to the right which will take you along the Bay Trail to St Kilda and beyond (you can walk all the way along the foreshore to Port Melbourne) or you can veer to the left and walk along the Bay Trail on Elwood beach towards Brighton beach. We tend to take it in turns. There are also great cafes along the path in each direction.

A short ten minute stroll will bring you to one of Melbourne's most beautiful gardens...the St Kilda Botanical Gardens. Registered with Heritage Victoria, the gardens contain 810 mature tree specimens, a rose garden, a Sub-Tropical Rain-forest conservatory, a lake and many local indigenous and native plants. The Garden is open between sunrise and sunset seven days a week and the conservatory is open between 10.30 am and 3.30 pm all weekdays and from dawn to dusk Saturday to Sunday and on public holidays. Grab some food from Ripponlea Village, pack a picnic and spend an afternoon by the lake and exploring the gardens. It's another world in there.

Also known by locals as the Elwood canal, once you hit the canal from Byron Street, you can choose to veer right and walk the canal to the beach or to veer left and walk towards Elsternwick Park and Elsternwick Park Nature Reserve (essentially two parks side by side separated by Bent Avenue, Elwood). The Elster Canal Path is a great place to walk, jog, run or cycle or simply pull up a piece of grass and watch the ducks and local birdlife.

During lockdown, my husband and I oscillated between walking Elwood beach and the Elsternwick Park Nature Reserve. One gave us our dose of beach and the horizon and the other gave us our tree and green fix. The nature reserve is huge and contains a small lake, walking trails and much flora and fauna. The former golf course is currently being transformed into a vibrant nature park reserve with a "chain of ponds,” woodlands and wetlands, a “conservation island,” a look-out knoll and bird hides. A fabulous green lung 15 minutes from your front door.

Getting Around

Ripponlea train station is about a 7 minute walk up Glen Eira Road and the train will take you straight into Melbourne's city (Flinders Street Station) in under 15 minutes. Fantastic for business travellers who are looking for a location close to the city but in a cool urban suburb. You can also jump on a tram and enjoy a ride on one of Melbourne's icons...it will also take you direct to the city but will take about 35 minutes.
